  • The o-ring that seems to work best is one that measures 9MM ID X 2.5MM Thick.
Alternately you can replace the sensor and it includes the o-ring already assembled- (check fitment guide for your model and year)

Best thing to do if you have a ford with 4.0 on these plastic years, Is order 5 of these from eBay at $20 a piece and keep them on you at all times. Or else you will get stranded by a ford 4.0 plastic year

I went above and beyond on mine. New SimmonsAutosportz one piece aluminum housing and new Motorcraft gaskets and houses and thermostat. And new temperature sensor with o-ring while I was in there.

This is only one of ford's cockeyed designs. Plastic Intake manifolds and thermostats? Instead of being screwed in tight, the sensors are just pushed in and held loosely with a piece of wire! The thermostats are inserted into the plastic housing with only a rudimentary seal. The darn seal on the bottom of the housing is only a rubber oring. These things are designed to fail. I replaced mine with a metal housing but unfortunately it had the same sensor design and thermostat problem. I sealed the darn thermostat in with gasket compound and wrapped teflon tape around the sensor oring. If the sensor leaks again, I will glue it in with gasket compound. The metal housing only cost me $40 and was at least made well. But I will never be able to pry the thermostat or sensor back out.

Dorman does specify on their instructions to replace the temp sensor with housing replacement. Or buy a Motorcraft unit that comes with new sensors already

Also, none of these aftermarket parts are interchangeable with each other or Ford. Including the outlets, housings and gaskets. Plus some of the aftermarket gaskets between the block and the housing will only fit that unit and can not be bought separately. Only buy a complete unit. I learned the hard way.

Teflon tape, the white plumbers stuff, works perfect, I changed mine and used the tape and no leaks.

I’ve changed 6 of these on 3 explores and 3 mustangs. I’m not changing it again. I’ve got a OE leaking at the same seal line. Well, it’s getting dipped in jb weld, about 3 costings. Sick of these housings. They sell an aluminum one. Hahahah it leaked from the same crack.

Advance auto parts #24628 is a perfect fit. It's a green o-ring and runs about $.69.

Late to the party, but just scored an 01 Sport Trac. Did I understand correctly that Ford has a metal housing now? Part number?

Funny you posted his video. I just replaced my second dorman because of the same issue. Fortunately my second dorman came with a new o-ring and was very secure. Also, you can essentially buy 2 dorman housings for the price on one motorcraft set. Hopefully my second dorman lasts longer than the first. Glad you uploaded this vid, just reassured what I was thinking might be the issue.

What about a note on that bypass hose that is often overlooked and often swollen and ready to burst.
