What a GR8 engine bay on the 4.0L.
Lot of space to work at least

I’m just replacing the thermostat housing on my wife 2002 Ford Explorer 4.0 with 190 thousand miles on it. Greetings from North Texas. Life is good.
Thank you it was the thermostat! After fixing hose clamp leaks I could not get the temp gauge needle to proper halfway reading, and the entire housing was two years new.
You’re welcome! Same thing here. New housing yet bad thermostat. No sense in taking the whole thing apart.
What's up I'm Mike I have a 4.0 ford mustang watching these videos really want to rebuild my engine Iwas foinf just swap motors but this inspired me to rebuild
Hey mike welcome to the channel! A rebuild is definitely achievable. Just take your time and do everything by the book. My rebuild video has all the info you will need. Any questions just ask. Thanks for commenting.
I know this has nothing to do with the thermostat but , what would you do if you have a spark plug threaded hole ? How do I fix it?
Also thank you for the video now i know how to replace my explorer's thermostat 🙌🏼
You’d have to drill and tap the head to add a insert. Very common procedure on the Ford 4.6 and 5.4. Just about any shop can accommodate you.
@@iamdjnam Helicoiling all the cyclinders on the 5.4 engine makes it bullet proof. Did all eight on mine after having one plug blow out. Drove truck too 400,000 miles then sadly had to let it go due to other issues. Freind pulled engine and is still running in another vehicle.

Can’t you change it without draining the antifreeze? Even if you loose a little bit ?
my friend brandons grandpa is a ghost and im pretty sure he broke my thermostat vause he thought it was the ghost catching trap from ghostbusters
Why do you put the burp hole on the thermostat towards the back? Most Are putting it towards the front. Does it really matter with the thermostat being horizontal?
It seems to work both ways since no one I'd complaining.
Either way it doesn’t matter. It’s mainly to allow initial coolant flow with thermostat closed. I’ve had many 4.0s overheat when I didn’t put the hole.
Do you have to prey it out
I'd replace that plastic housing with a aluminum one.
For sure, I replaced the entire housing when I removed the engine over the summer. The housing is okay for now, just hard to make heat in the cold NJ winters.
I have a 06 Ford explore with the V-6 would you be interested and rebuilding the engine for me
Where are you located
Right down in the middle of Missouri Cuba Missouri
I’m in Nj. I’ll build you an engine but it’d cost an arm to ship it.
Yeah that’s too far for me thanks anyway I think you’re a great mechanic I watch all your videos I think your excellent tradesmen
Appreciate the support! Thank you so much.
I thought it was chrisfix
What size thermostat did you install?
Standard OE temp
@@iamdjnam 92 C. Or lower 84 C . ?
@@johnwipf1225 92
@@iamdjnam I'm trying an 84 , I need more heat in cab , thanks for info .
If you need more heat you either need to flush or replace the heater core. A cooler thermostat will make it worse.
A smart mechanic never chases pennies.
That thermostat is a China clone and antifreeze is cheap same as o-ring.
Having to deal with premature failure or doing something twice is a much bigger price that what you saved.
