- This is a video tutorial on how to replace the thermostat on a 2002-2005 Ford Explorer 4.6L V8. On this particular video we had to get creative with the thermostat seal. Make sure you let the silicone rubber set for at least a day.

That AC Delco thermostat looks like a much higher quality thermostat than what was in there.
As for the allowing a day for the silicone to set, some places carry 5-minute and 1-minute silicone gasket makers, and some OEMs use that stuff, so it's not a gimmick.
Yeah it really felt like a more quality item.
That stuff works well too! We just happen to have silicon rubber laying around so we used it. It works great!
Do you have to use the silicone rubber
Thanks for the video. This helps me. God bless you.
We can't find the cap where you state to drain the coolant below the passenger seat under the vehicle
It’s on the bottom of the radiator, right side
You posted this 3yrs ago and I'm just now finding out about the hose clamp tool?? Buddy, I've been through a lot of pain.
Sorry to hear that! Your struggle is over! The hose clamp tool is here! I made a whole video about it too. Thanks for watching!
How many gallons of new coolant should I pick up? I have one gallon of pre-diluted right now that will work for my vehicle.
Do you have to use the silicone or can you replace thermostat without it?
Your a great Guy bro, super attitude Thanks you
Hey, thank you so much for watching!
No matter the quality of thermostat, I always check new one in a pan of boiling water at least twice,iv gotten defective ones before,an found out after i already put them in.
Why did you change the thermostat? What was the car doing or not doing? Mine I think is leaking by the housing, I am not sure, a lot is coming out.
It wasn't functioning so the vehicle was over heating. Thank you for watching!
Temp gauge only going 1/4 way up not 1/2... thermostat stuck open?
Most likely
My service engine light came on. I put it in the scanner and it gave me the code P0128. So I'm about to change the thermostat. The car is not over heating though. I'm I doing the right repair?
That code can also just mean you are low on fluid. Check that first. Thanks for watching!
Could you use a sealant like permatex instead of silicone pictured in video?
If it is rated for that temperature range then sure! Thanks for watching Jennifer!
Does anybody know where I can locate the coolant sensor on a 2002 Ford Explorer 4.6 V8.
Behind water pump pulley?
Can you please tell me what the bit the thermostat goes into the lower housing I think the seal/ gasket is called No one seems to be able to find it in the data base here in Aus and mine has started leaking
Like he cares
Do you need to use the silicone rubber?
Yes. Thanks for watching!
I have 4.6 triton expedition 2003. Is this the same process?
Very similar! Thanks for watching!
Will it work on 2008 4.6
Rubber mallet, duh
Where’s the cap for the drain?
Under the radiator
Question cool vid by the way my 4.6 heater that’s along time to get hot
Could be the thermostat not letting the coolant get hot quickly. Thanks for watching!
This tutorial doesn't even slightly resemble a 2002 thermostat unit!
That was on a 2002. Are you sure you have a 4.6 V8? Thanks for watching!
@@2carpros Oh! I have a 2002 4.0 6 cylinder...my bad! Sorry 'bout that...
