Thermostat Housing New METAL Replacement 05-10 v6 Ford Mustang

- This is a step by step for replacing the thermostat housing (and thermostat) for a 2005-2010 v6 4.0L Ford Mustang. Also, there is now an aluminum thermostat housing/water outlet available to replace the plastic thermostat housings. Whether you are installing a plastic or metal housing, this video aids in the installation. Both types are the same install process shown in this video.
I'm not affiliated with the company that makes the aluminum ones but I have found these on Amazon and eBay. I prefer them because I have had 4 plastic ones leak on the same car and was glad to find an aluminum part that will hopefully solve the problem.
let me know if you have any questions and I will do my best to answer them.
Tips:
--Assemble the upper and lower housings together with thermostat in place. This helps insure a strong seal at the base.
--Use a gasket making material in addition to the bottom o-ring because this o-ring can become flat.
--Inspect the small hose coming from the water pump (hose mentioned in the video). Clamp this hose at the bottom portion before installing the new thermostat housing as it will help it to not move around.
--The 98" lbs of torque is for both the metal and plastic pieces. However, you can go to 100" lbs for the metal parts if desired.
--When adding coolant, be careful. The coolant flowing to the heater runs through cycles but the thermostat is still closed at first. When the thermostat opens, hot coolant may come out of the reservoir fast. You are able to simply add fluid and tighten the cap. The reservoir is designed to remove the air bubbles but I like to do it the way in the video at first. It is your preference. If you add fluid and close it up, it's good as long as the engine is running well. Just keep the heat on for 15 min. and WATCH THE TEMP. GAUGE FOR OVERHEATING for any process you use.
--Recycle the used coolant because it is toxic. You can call around to various shops to see if they will take it or you can call the city that you are in and ask if they have any place to recycle it.
--Be sure to remove the negative battery connection when disconnecting any electrical components.

This was the best most concise and well spoken tutorial I have found on YOU-TUBE ...Good Stuff
Dennis Riblett the veiod
I saved $500 just watching you. Keep up the good job brother
Excellent tutorial. Getting Keanu Reeves to narrate was a nice touch too :)
Hello Mike. I wanted to thank you. I was losing coolant and I had no idea where it was coming from. Looked up the symptoms on google and I figured out it was the thermal housing leaking. Your video is very much appreciated. I don’t know much about cars but your video gave enough knowledge and confidence to change the housing myself. Saved me a lot of money. Thank you.
you. are. the. best. Also for aluminum since it is no longer on amazon and ebay doesnt usually have full assembly there's a guy in Tennessee named simmons auto's whose making them with full assembly
Please! Please! Can you begin uploading more videos? This was simply amazing, super concise, detailed and clear. Just perfect.
My man!... nothing else on RUclips about a temperature sensor replacement and you answered all of my questions!... Keep up the good work my guy!
This was one of the best videos I have ever seen. I ordered this part and can't wait to replace it.
Thanks alot, I was able to replace my thermostat housing this morning, and stop the coolant leak.
This video is probably the best one out there. Literally walked me step by step! Thank you so much !
This saved me so much time and money! Had your video playing on my tablet, followed step by step, was done in about 30 min start to finish for a grand total of $70. Thank you!
I’ve used this video a couple of times. Thanks for an easy step by step video! You rock, man! I finally bought the aluminum housing. I was done tired of that damn plastic one.
Excellent tutorial. Thanks! My daughter's mustang is leaking and I believe this is the culprit.
so i was in a rush this morning to work, only had 30 minutes to swap this guy out, and this video really guided me. although i didn’t have time to let it run without the cap. since then my heater only blows cold and AC… also a very old thing, wiper fluid isn’t coming out. gonna try letting it idle for a bit in a few hours without the cap to see if that helps at all
Don't usually leave comments, but your vid is simple, comprehensive, good recording can see exactly what you're talking about, good extra information too, goes with out saying you deserve a lot more attention, thanks for the vid, made shit alot easier. 6/5 *'s would recommend you, subscribed and liked, GOOD DAMN JOB MAN!!
I couldn't get a metal housing, but I just put a dorian replacement in my Mustang thanks to you and this video. Seriously, much appreciated!
Thank you so much. This is exactly what I was looking for. I'm tired of the terrible plastic thermostat housing that has done nothing but leak and I've been looking for a metal replacement for a little while now. Your video was very well put together and you did a good job explaining things. Thanks again.
Thank you so much for posting this! I installed a plastic housing on my 06 v6 mustang. The shop quoted me 300$ for labor but I did it myself thanks to you. If the plastic doesn't work I will try aluminum.
I really appreciate this video. I watched it just to see if there were any gotchas on installing the new thermostat. Because of your video, I learned that the aluminum housing is available. I also really appreciate that you mention the sizes of the wrenches that you're using at each step.
I've watched many tutorials and this by far The Best I have ever seen. All the others rush through important parts of the video (stupid) Mike takes his time and shows all the details and tools you need to be successful. You have to do more demos.
Thanks Mike I have a coolent leak from underneath my engine now I think this is what it is and now see what to do to fix the it. Good job 👍😊
Best step by step video of any repair Ive seen, Quality work and video
Extremely happy you made this. Saved me $400 at a shop, I’m doing this myself thanks to your video!!
34 people dislike this video
Because they don't know nothing about cars.
Even watching a video .
This video helped me every single step of the process although a lost a screw from the throttle body but I'll find it.
Am getting my new thermostat housing tomorrow.
Now I know how to put it on
Thank you
Your video is so informative and you do an amazing job walking us step by step through the process. Thank you so much for your knowledge and help.
Best automotive video I've seen presented on any channel.
Extremely well done, easy to see everything and described so many things and was just a huge help. I really appreciate it.
Performed this yesterday on my 2008 v6 mustang with no issues thanks to this vid!
Thank you Mike!!!! My sons mustage just has this issue and i repaired it using this info in just a few hours.... keep up the great work !!!!!!!
Thanks! Awesome video, probably 1 of the most informative and thorough I've seen. Appreciate your insights and effort!
Great video man simple and simple and straight to the point I started doing this but then it started raining so probably gonna finish tomorrow or in a couple days thanks again keep it coming!
thank you for taking the time to make this video. i followed you step by step and it worked perfectly. keep it up my friend
Best video i found, i just bought an 08 mustang and thought i was alone, car started over heating and i have little knowlage on these things, upon finding my issue being the tempature housing and then looking it up to find most if not all mustang's have this issue im a little relieved, not to mention your video is the best of the best when it comes to step by step and clarity, i will most likely order or buy an aluminum houseing to avoid the plastic garbage that very well may split or warp again, THANK YOU FOR YOUR VIDEO BROTHER! DRIVE SAFE!
joshua meyers. AMEN!!!!!
Really wish you were neighbor you're really knowledgeable in this stuff. 🐐
Fantastic video. Just finished changing my thermostat housing on my v6 mustang. The video was extremely helpful. Thanks you very much.
Ps. Firestone was quoting $400 for the job. The parts cost me $50 to DIY.
Thanks for the very detailed video. I'll be replacing this on my daughter's car tomorrow.
Thanks for the vid! I just bought this same metal housing for my 2007 Mustang v6 and will be installing it tomorrow.
Matthew Morton how did the install go?
Thank you! I'm not the best at car repairs but this made it really easy!
Best instructional video on RUclips. I just replaced mine but I can see a puddle of coolant in the valley but I cant see any coming out.
Very Detailed & Instrumental. Attention to detail superb
Fantastic video and I am forwarding it to my grandson as we will be doing this next weekend.
This was a great video! It was the best one I found. Thank you so much for posting this. It allowed me to do It my self and save $600.
Very detailed and clear perfect for a DIY job...thank you so much.
This video was tremendously helpful. Thank you SO much!!
Excellent Instruction Sir, you are a good man.....Thanks!
just recived my replacement metal thermostat housing in the mail today and it came with an important note for the 2005 model...The upper housing will hit the throttle body heater. To use the metal upper housing you will have to do the throttle body bypass or grind the upper housing down at the contact point and or heater box on throttle body.
What? I have the 05 model and it's doing this shit now 😑 which way did you fix it?
Tang Stang Did you end up doing it? Tired it tonight and having the same problem
Where did you buy it from
Great video - Easy to follow and very detailed instructions!

Thank you for helping me save 150 dollars labor from my mechanic. 👍
Awesome tutorial man!
Good stuff man helped me out a lot and saved me a good amount of money too.
Thanks for your help, bro.
You made it look so simple thanks man
I've been told to replace the throttle body o ring after you remove it. Nice clean motor btw.
Great vid. I installed one of the aluminum housings on my supercharged 4.0 as part of a long block swap. Mine wasn't leaking (yet) but if it did go, replacement would require yanking the whole blower assembly. Peace of mind is worth something.
Yea that would suck getting a leak after all that work, that was going to be my next project too but that car recently got totaled
Very good bro really keep up on the videos I’m going throw the same thing tomorrow I’m gonna try to work on mine 2010
Awesome video! You made it easy.
Thanks man! Shop wanted to charge me $500. This made it easy.
Great info absolutely impressive
Beautiful video, great job!

Nice video you saved me some money thanks 😊
Thaanks Mike…you just saved me $175!
great tutorial !
This is a good video thanks Mike
thanks for the video man !
You know I was having a real hard time determining where this leak of radiator fluid was coming from ...I actually could smell the coolant from inside the car! I opened up the hood and found coolant puddling and corroding on top of the engine in the tunnel created by I guess the air intake on top of the engine ....my first thought was Oh Sh!t warped heads or head gasket leak. But upon further inspection there was some crusty residue around the seams on the thermostat housing.! Oh there is a god thank you! I though to my self ...shirly there must be a YOU TUBE video on this problem and bam your's was at the top of the playlist!
Shame on you FORD for designing to fail or planned obsolescence with cheap plastic parts that can't take the heat of the engine coolant! Aluminium or a metal housing seems to be the only way to go and should have been in the design specs from the get go. If Henry Ford could see the money saving cheap shortcuts the the company that bears his name sake does today I'm sure he'd be turning over in his grave like a PTO on a Ford 8N tractor!!
Thank you Mike for finding the metal housing after you installed how many plastic ones that failed....I think you said 4 in your vid ? I have a 45th edition 2009 Mustang with the V6 and I hope the housing will clear the throttle assembly....hopefully he said with no modification. Your video was very well produced... you must have a production background. Not one moment did I say to myself I can't see what your talking about and I feel very confident going into this repair. I took notes and also created a tools list along the way and also thank you for mentioning the tork specs and bolt sizes ....very helpful complete and concise info! I have to schedule to work on my car when I have a couple days off from my day job just to leave fudge factor time to find another ride just in case I futz up the job. I would like to see more videos from you. on the 'Stang I would also like to donate some bucks to the cause ....because I think you saved me a $hit load! Thanks Again
Jack LoPinto I am going on my third!! I am going to switch to aluminum. This video didn’t exist for my first two housing units. I am still baffled what a cheap part this is!
The mfg,of all makes use plastic parts to cut down on weight for fuel economy,it's called cafe...look it up.
Excellent Video!
I got the plastic replacement from Dorman. I wish I'd known about the metal replacement. Oh, well . Dorman says they'll warranty it for life and the car has 150,000 miles on it . Anyway , thanx for a great vid !
OUTSTANDING VIDEO!!!!
Awesome video very discriptive thank you very much
Thats one damn good video, thank you. Wish you listed all the new parts needed in your description text.
just did this using ur vid and it worked beautifully except for the ring of the thermostat. it didn't want to go in so I used the old one since it was shrinked down already.
thanks for the video !!
great video, just about to replace mine thanks
Great video thanks
excellent video thank you
You are amazing. Thanks so much.
excellent video
tonight i did this job. it was quick and easy. much thanks on the great help this video provided. awesome
Really well done, thanks so much man, I've got to pull this off this weekend with my son, and I think we have a good chance now, thanks so much.
How did yall do?
I just did this for my mother except I used all Motorcraft parts because she's funny about putting aftermarket parts in any of her trucks. It was a 2006 explorer 4.0. Everything went well except the new plastic thermostat housing from Motorcraft was slightly redesigned and thicker plastic than the original and that little clip that holds the temperature sender and was a total pain in my ass. Should've been the easiest part but it made me want to throw the housing like a baseball across the garage. I had to bend it and modify it slightly to work with the redesigned housing
