  • I review my daily driver 2006 Mustang. It's a five speed manual Pony Package model I've owned for several years. This car was the one used in American Muscle's install videos for the Flowmaster true dual system (the one on my car).
    • 2005-2009 Mustang V6 F...
They also used if for the MAC system.
    • 2005-2010 Mustang V6 M...
I discuss why I bought it, interesting features and odd quirks, common problems and things to look for as well as good and bad reasons to choose the V6 over the GT.
I also used my car to show how to repair delaminating door trim panels.

If you get a v6, they say you should have got the v8. If you get a 3v, you should have got the 5.0. If you get a 5.0, you should have got the Shelby. Just enjoy the car you bought and don’t listen to anyone else.

Hell yeah. For me, the 5th gen Mustang was the last time a muscle car looked like a muscle car. Now they look so much alike due to safety restriction and whatnot. But this is where retro styling meets modern advances, and it's a shame cars don't have "personalities" anymore.

@@Roxanne3v Ours is now at 58k miles on it. However because this was formerly a drag strip car and the former (1st) owner had HEAPS of money, he had the engine and transmission pulled out sometime around 2009 (when it stopped being a show car) and had a professional engine builder "go all out" as David put it. Fully built with all the best parts. Over $10k between the motor and transmission was sunk into that car and it only had about 20k miles on it at that time hahahahaha! we knew the 1st owner personally, have known this car and all its history since the day it was bought new. My (now ex) wife and his wife were good friends. Me and my ex owned this car for a year before the divorce hit. She got the car (that was paid off! -_- ) in the divorce. When she put it up for sale, I knew I HAD to have it back! So I now have it once again. Since my name was on the title with hers, technically I am still the 2nd owner of this car. ;-) Future plans are to from now on just take good care of it, some little needed cosmetic upgrades, and the ratchet shifter just for my own personal driving pleasure. Otherwise, it is just going to be a fun weekend power cruiser. I will use my worn out but still kicking pickup for daily errands and work. ;-)

But he also contradicted himself in listing reasons TO upgrade it such as the base price and insurance but listing his own reason not to, because he already has a track car. I personally believe that getting a v6 and modding it is a much better idea because you can create something really unique and make it your own.

My Wife has a Vapor colored 2008 Mustang V6 just about like the one you are showing. I just did a make over on the 118,000 mile vehicle because it’s been reliable with only replacing the alternator and ball joints and a few batteries and a 100,000 mile tuneup. Yes had issues with the insert on the doors and contact cemented a few times and finally got plastic molded inserts and silicone glued them in place. Also, just had the front seat upholstery done on the leather seats and upgraded the braking system with performance brakes, drilled and slotted rotors and red powder coated calipers. AND new 17 inch wider Bullit wheels about the same color as the car. Along with fleshing up the entire interior dash and center areas redone. It’s like a new car and we/she loves it. Thanks for the video.

A 2005 4.0 with a 5 speed manual, in Windveil blue color. Although it does now have 215k on it, it was rather a good deal as I bought it for $2,000. I've now had it for about a year and some months, and it has been a great reliable first car! I highly recommend to any teen out there to convince your parents to let you buy one. Great video! I had a 2007 black V6 pony package car and it was amazing. It was my baby. Unfortunately....one day I came out of work late and a drunk driver had crashed into it while parked on the street and totaled it! I was devastated.
Flash forward after the beers and tears. I now have a 2006 Mustang GT, and while I love it, and it IS faster and somewhat funer to drive - it's not crazy faster or funer - and it doesn't have the same mojo as my V6. Partially because it did not have leather seats. the Shaker 500 system, an aux input, and you couldn't unlock it from 40 yards and turn on the lights. I overlooked the loaded nature and later manufacture of my V6 pony for the GT and paid the price to a degree.
I'd say if you got the funds go GT, but hey V6 Pony's (the regulars ones are too dull for me) are legit and fun to drive. I also think they have a better looking fogs, badge, and spoiler (slightly lower) than the GT. If you go budget and the V6: Get the Pony Package, leather seats, Shaker 500(sounds great - regular stock system is awful IMO), lower mileage car, manual transmission. A great teenager's first car IMO if they like American. Gt has a lot of torque to the rear wheels and you gotta be a little more cautious with it.
p.s. that passenger drain will clog and flood the cabin, and if it has before, the cabin air filter will be gross too. Easy to fix.

I'm looking at one from a local dealer. 4.0 liter motor with 5 speed manual, and it is a complete dog. Much slower than I would have expected. I would it expect it to Honda Civic fast, but it's not comparable. Would that be normal for this car?

I bought a 2005 V6 convertible last year. Rebuilt the suspension, and put 40k on it already (I drive A LOT for work), nearly 200k. Thanks for the heads up on the engine. Just replaced the thermostat housing yesterday lol. It's got a couple other minor things that need repair.
Another thing to mention that goes wrong is the parking brake cables rust.
IMO the 2005-2008 Mustangs are the best looking ones ever made.. yes...ever. I absolutely love my car and I will drive a Mustang convertible until the day I die.

With BMR suspension, 3.73 gears, carbon cobra differential clutch set, mgw transmission mount shifter full exhaust, 93 mpt tune. I love the 14 the most, the older s197s look good, but the 14 is just on another level. It's basically a better s197 all together kinda like a 3vGT/ 370z mustang.

It was an upgrade from an old Chevy with a bad oil leak I traded for it. It was cared for and it's fast enough around town. This Mustang has the great S197 body style and upgraded dual exhaust and intake with a BAMA tune.

I bought the last 2007 model the dealer had on the lot and he was already looking for room for the 2008 models coming in on the truck. I am too old to race now so the 6-cylinder was entirely adequate for me. LOVE the front and rear-end body styling. Reminds me of the 1967 and 1969 models back when I was a kid. Also bought an end-of-the-year 2014 six-cylinder that I really did not need but I knew they were going to lower the roof on the 2015 models and put a bunch of electronic doodads in the 2015s. So went ahead and took the plunge. 2014 body is a little too fancy for my taste but wife loves it so it is a backup car to her Honda Accord daily driver.

I have an 2010 S197, new body style but same 4.0L with the crappy 7.5 open end diff for one wheeler peeler action. Automatic, because I got a good deal on it. I would've preferred stick, but anyhoo. So far the only problem I've had was the notorious thermostat housing. Overall its an extremely reliable car for its age. I got a set of American Racing torq thurst wheels (bullitt replicas mainly) and i put a single Magnaflow Axle back, i feel spending for double would have costed too much, since I live in Canada and everything is 3x more expensive for me. My next mod is a tune, I'm not expecting massive power gains. But I'm curious to try, much like you.
Moral is: Its not fast, but has enough punch to make you're daily drive fun. Fastback is just gorgeous when its all shined up, way I see it, it looks good, sounds good, turns heads, comfortable, practical, RWD, fun and nostalgic. I've had people laugh at me for my Automatic V6, I still love my pony. It makes me just want a 5.0 even more. Im forever sold on Mustang. I'm still gonna put a bit of money into mine, but not a ton into performance. no point in ruining the 4.0s reliability. In all honesty, its faster than you'd expect...its got a ton of torque. HP isnt all that matters folks....

I shopped for a Mustang for several months and saw 1 or 2 in that whole time that had the glass roof, it is incredibly rare. Though I did notice that each car with the glass roof was fully loaded. It wasn't enough that the roof was a near $2,000 optional extra, Ford seemed to only add it loaded cars.
BTW, this is also quite rare on GT models.

Sold my 2005 v6 (premium interior & painted Shelby-like wheels) coupe last year after having since new-16 years as a daily driver and just over 200k miles! I bought it for all the same reasons as you, especially that it had a great retro look, made a long commute more enjoyable, and was the hot new car that year. Loved it, but over the years, it had a lot of the issues you mentioned. Coolant issues, had at least 2 radiators installed. The passenger floor leaked through the cabin air filter- so I trimmed, then yanked out the rubber drains in the firewall. The Shaker radio was replaced once after the cds jammed so bad it was inoperable. Hood corrosion paint bubbling. The stepper motors on 5 of the 6 gauges went bad- replaced those. Another leak in the kick panel opening where the weatherstrip failed. Brake light bulbs didn’t last long. The door panel inserts sagged at around age 10, and after a year or two of trying to re-glue them, I took them out and the gray felt behind them actually looked good! At the end of my ownership last year, the battery drain when shut off was so bad that I couldn’t rely on it anymore, so bought a new Camry. Probably the most reliable car on the road. With that said, I miss that car a ton. One of the best looking Mustangs ever.

I like my power, but I've never seen anything wrong with a V6, because there is nothing wrong with it. It's always really irritated me when people make fun of a V6, or ask why someone didn't just buy a V8. It shouldn't really matter, if you buy a V6, you have your reasons. People need to remember not everyone wants or needs high power.
Overall, if you want a good looking car, but don't wanna brake the bank and dont care about power, just go for a V6. They're still good cars.

I've had my '07 V6 for around 7 years now. I never buy anything new and was looking at what was for sale in a manual which is a requirement for me. It has been reliable for me with the mentioned common issues mentioned in this video with the thermostat failing, clogged drain vent, dried out and leaky window seals, re-glued the door-trim panels and that GD corroding hood. My only mods were sequential tail lights, some LED bulbs and a short antenna as I hated that long whip one. It's already past where I thought I would be replacing it and I will keep driving it until something very expensive pops up. Still enjoyable!
Edit: And the gas tank stopped/slow filling. Had a mechanic blow out the evap vent hose which fixed it in my case.
