OMG, THANK YOU!!!!! I've replaced the entire cooling system on my vehicle and the overheating didn't stop until I replaced a $14 radiator cap! The reservoir was filling up and pushing out of the reservoir. Coolant wasn't flowing back in. You're video and knowledge saved my vehicle's life!!! Thank you so much!!! I owe you a beer!
Same thing happened to me. Last week I replaced radiator, hose, thermostat, then timing belt and water pump, still no good. This morning I watched this, and cleaned out a piece of small dirt from inside the cap, it's no more boiling.
I am a woman and absolutely hate doing anything to my Honda van but this video is very informative and hopefully after buying a new cap today, I'll be good to go.
Great video. I was chasing my overflow reservoir staying in the full hot mark for three days. No leaks, great heat and it had me baffled…until I replaced the radiator cap!! Problem resolved.
His diagnosis for my 1996 Geo Metro(mileage 165, 814) overheating issue was correct! I went out and purchased a $14.99 USD radiator cap from AutoZone. The radiator cap fixed the issue! I had previously purchased a brand new radiator, hose, and thermostat. Thank you ever so much for your philanthropy and kindness. If I lived near the Ratchets & Wrenches shop, I would definitely do business with you! I'm very impressed.
Thank you very much for this video. Also for those with overheating temperatures, take the thermostat and put in a pot with boiling water. The valve in the thermostat should open at the temperature engraved in the thermostat. If doesn’t open at that temperature, replace it. I also do this test with a brand new thermostat before fitting it to make sure the valve opens at the temperature marked on the thermostat.
I bought a new thermostat and water pump. Still my thermostat doesn't work. I know its thermostat because i get no heat from my heater inside. What can i do? Thanks
Duuude!! You are awesome. I tried everything. Replaced thermostat and radiator, bleeder valve, ect, none of it worked. I should have started here this was the last thing I tried and wow it worked! A 20 dollar fix sheesh! I’m forever subscribed!
Good information. If you go to your neighborhood auto parts store, have them test the caps on the shelf before you buy one. Last time I did that, every single 13 lb cap failed at 6 or 7 psi.
Or, don't even take a chance ruining an expensive car/engine on aftermarket junk and get OE. My dad used to tell me, "pay now or pay later." Why risk ruining engine to save a few bucks.
You are a very good presenter/teacher. So many Americans SHOUT at their audience, but you don't. How about the thermostat - another valve that if becomes stuck will cause over heating or the engine won't warm up at all as the valve will be stuck closed/open?
Please keep posting these easy to understand short videos, you should be an instructor for sure!!!! All these years and never knew TWO valves in a cap, what else is hiding in plain sight?
Very true. Had this very issue and it caused overheating. It was the cap/valve at the overflow container though. Another odd reason can be the overflow container itself. Same result… Should be mentioned that many modern cars with a closed cooling circuit don’t have a radiator cap anymore.

I replaced water pump I replaced all fluid on my cooling system I replaced thermostat I was about to replace radiator I was going crazy I never thought it was the reservoir Cap only $8 dollar on o Reilly 🙏 mine is a F10 4.6 97’ and it was only overheating while Driving it wouldn’t last 15 min driving and now is ready to work again 🙏

Cool video, a world of knowledge. Most of us never realized how important the radiator cap is, and how it works, very interesting. Thanks for this important information.
I'm currently doing extensive research because both my cooling fans are constantly on...not sure if the radiator cap will be something related but I wanted to thank you for teaching me something new! I'm doing this work myself out of curiosity and love to learn how things work and I never knew or thought that the cap is related to anything other than for cover and protection! Thank you!
Absolutely correct!! I learned this along time ago,, I had an 88 turbo coupe 5spd and i put a lever vent radiator cap on thinking it would be an upgrade but it gave me issues with the upper hose calapsing and ran much warmer,, put the old one back on and problem gone
Had a ford 5.0 upper hose collapse on me but it wasn’t the cap it was the reservoir clogged at the exit hole to the small hose. Cleaned it out and no more problem.
Just about 2 weeks ago I had an issue with a different valve in the cooling system in my SUV (the thermostat). However, rather than the excessive pressure putting a hole in one of my radiator hoses, blowing a gasket or something else to aggravate the hell out of me, it just ruptured one of the plastic ends of my radiator!!!😑🤦🏼♂️ Being that I'm not willing to pay almost $500 for a new radiator and I didn't feel like wasting time attempting to find the right type of adhesive, I purchased a plastic welder and fixed the tank that day in less than an hour! So far I have not had any issues with my first attempt at plastic welding, which I am so far quite pleased with, however I have been welding metal for over 20 years and it seems to be somewhat similar to T.I.G. welding and Oxy-Acetylene welding/brasing (using filler rod).... I am certain it's not the prettiest plastic welding job that's ever been done by human hands, but so far it's definitely holding up really well!!!👍

I had a car in once that would overheat and I couldn't for the life of me find the problem. Then I decided to take the whole cooling system apart, turned out the "fan wings" of the water pump was completely gone. So ofcourse there was nothing left to actually pump the water around the engine :)

You can replace it if it fails visual inspection or whenever you replace the water pump as a rule of thumb. Or you can pressure test it as I'll show in a future video.
And this comment is in regards to the tip about boiling your NEW thermostat. To verify it. Works. Unless technology has advsnced or something. Ive both been told snd read in factory service manuals. That have all stated the same thing. Boil it only to verify its faulty or needs replaced. Never boil a new one. Basically once you boil it. To verify if it opens and shuts. It now must be rrplaced. Ive always followed this and never had it be in corerct. Ive also never encountered anyone. That can disprove it either. So. Ne ways.
Nobody seems to talk about coolant that boils below the spec temperature. At 20K miles my coolant was still testing at 40 degrees below zero but boiling at 220 F, even though the gauge was far from red/overheat. steam would bubble into the reservoir and push coolant too. That left an air gap in the system because not all the coolant would get drawn back in from the reservoir. There are no perceptible leaks and the system passed a pressure test and combustion gas test. Replaces the radiator, cap, thermostat - no solution. Replacing the coolant solved this issue that even a pro mechanic shop was glad to misdiagnose.
My engine isn’t overheating but it’s getting really hot to the touch more than normal, I used the diesel engine oil in it and I’m wondering what can be the problem. Is is the gaskets? Is it the whole engine please help. I’m also experiencing lack of power

Really interesting. I've spent $200 fixing cooling system problems. The problem was just radiator cap.. 10 stars for this video

Always start with the cheapest fix then work your way up to head gaskets 😂😂
@dannyr3346 I started by replacing the thermostat, water pump , head gasket 😢 i haven't change the radiator cap 😑 it's a jeep

Basically once you boil it. To verify if it opens and shuts. It now must be rrplaced. Ive always followed this and never had it be in corerct. Ive also never encountered anyone. That can disprove it either. So. Ne ways.
Haven't watched nor read comments, radiator cap.
Edit: Nailed it.
Thanks
Very helpful video.
The cap, also, can get clogged, especially if you use a K-Seal or other stop leak product; you'll need to clean the cap or replace the clogged cap.
Thanks for the sharing so much valuable information.
My engine isn’t overheating but it’s getting really hot to the touch more than normal, I used the diesel engine oil in it and I’m wondering what can be the problem. Is is the gaskets? Is it the whole engine please help. I’m also experiencing lack of power
I also had the same problem, I changed the cap it worked just for a few days
