Excellent video! Big help! However, I wanted to add something to it that I found out in my 72 hour overheating diagnosis. HOPEFULLY, it will save someone else a lot of headache. I spent 3 full days researching what my problem was. 2014 Mustang V6 was operating fine UNTIL I turned on the AC; then it would overheat. I popped the hood and realized that the fan was not running when the engine reached high temp. I tested the fans, relays, fuses per your instructions - everything checked out (SO I THOUGHT). The actual problem was the Fan High Speed relay. It had continuity during testing with 12v and multimeter; but failed under the actual load in the vehicle. SO, I strongly suggest that if you hit a brick wall; swap out the relay with another working relay (in my case it was the relay for the starter). Soon as I swapped it out, the starter was dead; switched back and it was fine. Bought a new relay for $21 with lifetime warranty and I have been good to go! Hope this helps someone!

I tried testing the relay just by switching it with another of the same in my Subaru Outback. Everything was still fine so I figured it wasn't the relay until a couple days later my wipers went out because that's the relay I replaced it with.

I have been terrified of my cars overheating issues for years. Your videos are the first ones ever to make sense of it all. I have yet to find my multi meter, but once I do, I will be following your instructions religiously. I appreciate your help more than you may be able to imagine. Fear of things electronic has kept me from trying...and I am otherwise not afraid of much! Thank you so much!

Excellent diagnostic, here ! Clear and simple. 1st, check the fuse ! Also, in a pinch, you can swap the #1 relay with one of the other relays on the same number designation. Swap the two & see if your fan issue is resolved. #1 relay should hold the coolant temp at ~ 190*F, even on a hot day.

@CarsNToys so on my 2001 acura mdx, the fans are not turning on and the temperature Guage is reading normal but if I pull the relay out, which I tested and is fine, if I take a test light and connect to ground and touch the test light probe to where the relay plugs in, the low fan turns on. What do you think it could be?

all of that is helpful but missed one part way in the back there the thermostat housing is a switching unit " coolant temperature sensor " if this is not functioning it doesn't send the " click on " signal to the relays and thus fans don't run this can be caused by electronic failure or the thermostat itself is not opening to allow the coolant thru the pipe to the sensor as u showed with this video all the easy to reach stuff was tested and working so for non working fan under these test cases relays / wireing / fan moters done would inverably be the CTS switch or a blocked thermostat port

EXCELLENT VIDEO! I'm having a current issue where my fans won't turn on. I've spent so much money on new relays, fan temp switch sensor, ECT sensor, and still my fans won't run. If I disconnect the connector that terminates at the fan temp switch sensor then my fans come on full blast. If I reconnect that same connector back to the engine harness the fans turn off (meaning there is continuity) and if I go and turn on my a/c the fans run on low. So, I know my fans are working and I have a Relay Buddy tester and verified that all three fan relays are fully functional. So, I conclude that there's def an issue with the relay box / battery area and where it grounds, I think. Because when the fan temp switch sensor hits its temp range and sends its ground signal, that signal is not reaching the ECM is what I am thinking.

great video that explains a lot, meaning lots of tips to figure out the issue I have, where my fans are normally supposed to kick off at around 215F, instead the engine bumps up rpm as if I hit the gas pedal for a fraction of a second. If you have a tip on what could be the issue please advise. I do not have the testing equipment you have (yert!). It's a Dodge hemi 2018. How I broke this is I started my car without the Tb connected, which triggered 3 codes... Then the issue started and is just non stop.

I'm not a mechanic / auto but imagine a electronic engineer and I changed the water pump in my Suzuki XL7 with 200,000 miles and it was a massive job to me cause half the pump on this auto is inside and outside the engine,so we can do alot of jobs on our vehicals to save money but thanks You Tube I done it.

    Great job 👍
    A question...
What if all relays and connections are good and the fans work good but they delay. It takes a while till they kick on. I start engine and they are off, then I start the a/c and they are off. After a 3 - 4 minutes they are on. What seems to be the issue?

at 3:50, if you don't have power, you have an open circuit. A short would drain your battery and most likely start a fire.

    Thanks for this complete explanation.
Is it possible to check at which temp the controlbox activate the fans?
Mines are working but at a too high temp...

    Hi thanks for your videos..
    I'm a subscriber.
When testing the radiator fan harness connector, is it a must that we know the way that the harness connector ports are set up ?
Or Can we simply place the positive test lead in any harness connector port and then place the ground test lead into each individual relay port to hear that beep to test for continuity ?
Making sure to repeat this process for each and every radiator fan harness connector port (4+ ports).
I also noticed that you tested only one (#1) harness connector port with the positive test lead touching the ground test lead to the relay port (#5) and verified continuity.
I understand that this verified continuity for that specific port but should we check EVERY PORT because is it possible that one port can have continuity but another one of those ports in the same fan connector, etc. be defective while the other port is simultaneously okay making us assume that that continuity check came out ok when in fact part of that connector could be defective while the other part is okay ?
Or once you verify continuity in 1 port, is it unnecessary to check the remaining ports ?
Sorry about being excessive just trying to be thorough.
    Thanks.
    Anybody knowledgeable please reply soon.
