- Honda Cooling Fan Troubleshooting 2006 Civic. In this video I show how I troubleshoot a modern Honda cooling fan system with A/C Condenser and Radiator fans that operate at high and low speeds through a series/parallel configuration. This vehicle was having trouble with the A/C Condenser fan not working and I do some diagnostics to find the issue. The exact vehicle in this video is a 2006 Honda Civic EX Sedan. Enjoy!

Thank you Artie, I appreciate it!
Hi, I know this is off topic but I need your help. I recently changed power steering high pressure hose on my 99 Honda Accord and the power steering fluid bubbles when I turn the car on and I tried to bleed the system. Someone told me that it was air in the system. Can you please tell me how I can fix this problem. Thank you for your help. Keri
@@kericue2065 Turning the steering wheel lock to lock several times (don't hold it at lock) will bleed air out of most Honda systems. Assuming there are no leaks from the work that was just done, many times if fluid is foaming there is an air leak on suction hose/o-ring or pump shaft seal (it will suck in air but not leak fluid generally).
@@BigDog50001 oh thank you for answering me, there are no leaks, what steps should I take to fix this if turning the wheels doesn't work, the o-ring you mentioned is it the one on the new hose? The part that has two bolts and is attached to the pump? I changed the high pressure hose.
This is literally the most helpful and knowledgeable video I’ve seen on RUclips
I appreciate the comment, thanks!
That little detail you mentioned about the ground, in the bottom left corner of the diagram, saved me a trip to the mechanic. Thanks you!
Glad it helped, thanks for the support!
Which ground?

Same year car and my radiator fan was constantly running. After a lot of trouble shooting, replacing both engine coolant temp sensors and coming across this video thankfully, I figured out my issue. Come to find out the issue was actually the ac pressure switch! If it’s faulty or your system is overcharged and the sensor is reading too much pressure, it throws the whole system out of wack. The explanation of the wiring in this video was a life saver. Just wanted to share in case anyone ever comes to the comments for info or help
My 09’ civic AC was not cooling. Found out the compressor clutch was not engaging, but fans were working. Narrowed it down to bad AC relay in fuse box. Replaced it with MITSUBA Relay, Honda part number 39794-SDA-A05. ($20). AC blows cold now!! I have found this video very helpful in diagnosis of my civic AC. Also I have read on other forums that the Honda factory installed Omron AC relays go bad so better replace them sooner than later. Many thanks sir!
👍
I have a Honda Civic of the same generation and the condenser fan wasn't working and I followed this video step by step, I even hit the fan with a screw driver and it temporarly turned on... Thanks for sharing this video, so helpful 💯💯💯
Awesome explanation. Without a wiring diagram, theres no way to understand this.
Thanks 👍!
When i came to watch, I never expected a class session😂 but because it is so helpful, it took me back to class and now I cant wait to go home😂
👍
Big Dog: I have worked in factory maintenance for years and my big complaint was nobody knew how the various systems should function when the machine was working as it should. Without knowing that it complicates testing, so I really appreciate you for taking the time to explain how the fan system should operate under the different conditions. I have not solved the problem yet, but with your help I am confident that we will get there.
As a student electrical engineering about to graduate, this explanation was perfect, Totally understood 👌 time to fix my civic
👍
Great explanation of the circuit. Great use of the scan tool, test light and tap test. I like multiple approaches to verify an issue.
I try! Thanks for the comment Wyatt!
Video was a big help. Condenser fan in a 2010 accord wasn’t coming on. Noticed after checking why AC was only blowing 52deg. I eventually ran down a 20amp fuse under the hood and that fixed it! Thank you!
One of the best tutorials covering all aspects of a Honda fan problem. I bet the thumbs down are real-life technicians who are thinking no no nooooooo, you're giving away too much information, we need these yo-yos to pay us to fix their cars. Love the relay Buddy, I have to get myself one of those.
I appreciate the comment, thanks!
thanks big dog, been watching you since I got my first car and now I'm upgrading and finding new issues and I always come back to you for help
Excellent diagnosis, scientific and technical approach. Thanks.
this is what they saying 100% figured out. there's no way you cant find that issue with all the knowledge
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR EXPLAINING WHAT CAUSES WHAT TO HAPPEN. I've been chasing the wrong relays this whole time.
👍
I've just pass for two of your videos today, looking to replace the a/c condenser fan on a 2010 Accord. I am amazed by your explanations. I know some good mechanics until know, no one of them just near good to teach... I will be watching one by each one your videos, I'm sure I will learn a lot... Thanks!
Best explanation I have found on the Honda civic cooling and a/c fans. Thanks!
I have just replaced a bad a/c fan, so now both fans come on when the a/c kicks in, but the fans do not run when the car is warm. I am waiting for new temperature sensors - hoping that will fix it.
A tip to prevent overheating, is to run the heater inside the car, which removes the heat from the engine. This is what I am doing, while waiting for the new sensors to arrive. Its cheaper to buy new sensors than to get the dealer to plug in their computer just to tell you whats broken.
Thanks again.
I am having the same issue. Did the temp sensor fixed the issue?
Great diagnostics, I don't have a Civic, couple of Accords and a Ridgeline, but the idea is the same. I really appreciate your time and effort you put in these videos. Very well explained. Thank you very much.
I appreciate the comment, thanks!
I seen some many videos they tried the best to explain. But. Honestly. You are the best. Actually your this video help me a lot in my 2006 Honda. Thank you very much. God bless you my friend
Great stuff mate!
I felt like I'm in a Honda training college with your excellent explanation..
Please can we see the fan replacement video too 😊
All the best!
Thank you, I appreciate the comment!
Great to check the electricals first, some people overlook that and just start swapping out parts ahah thank you for the video, pretty sure some of my relays are no good since they both don’t turn on when AC fan is on low or high power. Changed the A/C relay and fuse in the 36 position under the dash inside the car. Never looked at the other fuses you mentioned: Fuse 6,7, 11 and 15.
Boss man.. amount of info I got from this info I don't think I could have gotten it anywhere else. Just subscribed. Keep up the good work
Thanks and welcome!
Please share the link to the fan replacement video
Seriously one of the best car videos I've ever seen. Thank you!
Your video reminded me of the collage class, very informative but after that, I need a cup of tea. Thanks for the video and keep up the good work.
I'm glad to have found this video. This helped solve my problem. Thanks for the detailed instructions.
Very helpful mate
I save alot of dollars I change 2 black mitshuba relays and my both fans are working thanks

Excellent tutorial 😊. The best info!!! Great job. Thank you!!!😇
Nice explanation of a common problem
Thanks Jim!
I stayed for the bonus footage!!! You know your stuff! As always, great video!!!
lol, thanks! I always appreciate you stopping by and watching!
Outstanding breakdown of how this circuit works. It's really not all that complicated once you get your head wrapped around series and parallel circuits. The thing that irks me is that it's computer controlled. Why does everything have to be computer controlled? Just toss in a couple more relays connected to temp and pressure switches and the system would work fine. That's how things like this worked 20+ years ago. Engineers never think about how expensive repairs can be because obviously stuff that they design don't break.
Thanks for the comment and the input!
was about to buy a car with bypassed fan and wondering why it was bypassed, your explanation was top notch for me to isolate the problem quickly.....btw I'm an electronics graduate so i understand everything you said pretty fast.....
i would av tested continuity on the condenser fan straight up anyways ...thanks
👍
Looks like exactly my Civic , same trim level. Very educational vid and thanks for uploading. 🤩
I just wanted to fix my car. Now I see I need to be a certified electrician. But seriously, I've been coming back here for over a year. And every time I think my knowledge has grown I am reminded of what separates this amateur from a professional when I watch him in action.
👍
May honda fd over heats when traffic and i just watch your video and i found out that i dont have a relay on may condenser fan thnk u for that video and it helps me a lot
Very intuitive and thorough video and I learned about some cool tools along the way. Just bought my son a 2010 civic and the cooling fan doesn’t seem to run at all, definitely not on low speed. Appears the condenser fan is only running on high. Liked and subbed.
Thanks for the comment and welcome!
Thank you Dave. Good job. Have a blessed and safe week.
You too, thanks for the comment!
Great video! I am currently experiencing the same problem with my 8th gen. I never thought to check the electrical components I was just planning on replacing the cooling fan.
Thanks for the comment!
Your very good at explaining details that most cant get across. You just helped me with a problem with the A/C and im about to check the fans and then the temp sensors. Thank you, will keep learning from you. You can tell your confident on the subject.
I do my best, thank you for the comment!
Thank you so much for educate me and deeply understanding trouble shoot .
Thanks for your help am going thru that problem thanks for your video.very very helpful thanks
Glad it helped, thanks for the comment!
Extremely thorough and helpful. Thanks!
Thank you for the comment!
Very through and informative THANKS!
I appreciate the comment, thank you!
Great video! I learned a lot about fans and their relays. I have an issue with my wife's Honda Jazz(Fit). Originally the AC compressor clutch didn't engage for about two years. Now I bought a new AC relay and the compressor started to work (only mildly cold air). But, only the main fan works and only if AC is turned on (then the compressor clutch wont cycle at all, it runs continuously. Perhaps a pressure valve problem). The fan will eventually run b/c of engine temp is rising. I have to test your methods on that Jazz. Thank you for the info!
👍
Man you are awesome. I admire your dedication and commitment in creating a very informative video on this diagnose. Thank you very much sir, apprecite your hard work. Liked and subd. Watchin you from 🇨🇦
Thank you for this detailed tutorial you are well spoken too, hello from Australia
Thanks 👍!
Thanks so much! I’m a beginner, and you explain so well!
Great job and explanation as always! Keep up the great work! Sure show the fan install!
Thanks Mike!
Excellent video Dave.Nice breakdown of how everything works. Thanks for the schematic review very helpful. The break job went well. Flushed the entire brake system as the moisture content of the brake fluid was way too high. Also flushed the power steering fluid. your videos are extremely helpful and thanks for sharing. Have a good one Artie 👍👍👍 As always Dave I am up to watch any video you have time to produce. Thanks much. Enjoy your coffee I am.
Good to hear the brake job went well, thank you for the comment!
Thanks for this reference. My case was a bad cooling fan relay not making contact when engaged. The rad fan does not come on when on parallel config (works when in series)
What do u mean (series
tnx to this. I can apply the diagram for the car im working for
👍
Found the problem! Thanks for the vid bud!
👍
That was a awesome tutorial. I learned.
👍
I'd like to see that video 📷 of you installing a fan. Thank you for your help !!!
Great video, awesome explanation on the high and low speed of the fan, Ty.
Great video. Well done sir. I'd love to see the fan install as well.
Thanks again for sharing your experience. I have been able to accomplish another project on my daughter's Azula ('06 blue Civic) thanks to you.
...Oh I will be changing out the fan, is there a video for that portion of the project? You've given me confidence that I can do it!
👍
So I'm thinking I'm going to go straight to the ohm test on the fan. And if it doesn't ohm right then I'll replace it 👍
Or maybe I'll do the tap test first as that's that's even easier lol
Thanks for the very detailed video.
Great information and very explanatory definitely it helped me a lot thank you for dedicating a lot of time on explaining everything down to the core
Very thorough explanation. Thanks
Thanks 👍!
New subs. Sir from Philippines..you have great tools I can't afford to buy like your tools...in the Philippines it going to direct to the Battery + - to fan motor if not Running replace the AC motor....tnx to your knowledge Sir.
👍
Thanks for sharing your knowledge
Thanks for the comment!
Excellent in-depth explanation. 👍
Thanks!
Excellent Communication skills and knowledge! Thank you for sharing Sir.
Thank you for the comment!
Thanks for this! Subscribed, almost 100k 🎉
Wow, thanks for this detailed video!
Thank you man. Helped me put completely
Wow… quite technical, I got a bit lost!
Excellent explanation, thank you.
Thanks 👍!
Outstanding video
You the man ! I'm having an ac not turning on problem
👍
Absolutely an excellent video on this problem. I wonder, are you an electrical tech turned mechanic or the other way around? Either way, as a tech in both trades myself, I'd recommend YOU to anyone looking for service. You mentioned the "input" side diagnosis and I would really like to hear you go over those tests. With two ECTs and possibly a temp sensor for the dash it could be tricky. Thank you so much for your work on your vids!
Thanks 👍!
Hello my friend. Thanks for the great videos. I bought a used 2008 Honda Civic. Every time I put the ignition switch in the on position both fans turn on. Could you please help me with this?
Grasias por la clase
👍
Great instructional video. Thanks so much for sharing. My son has the exact same make and model. I was hoping to be able to fix the problem via this video but have not been able to. I used an Xtool D8 to diagnosis the pid's. The weird part was unlike the Autel, the Xtool's values for the A/C Switch, A/C Clutch, Fan High, Fan Low all showed as "closed". I would truly appreciate your thoughts on if it was the Xtool or something in the ECM that caused the values to be unreadable. Thanks in advance.
This is a great video! Thank you! You just saved me a trip to the mechanic. Tapping the condenser was the FIX! Can anybody explain why the tapping of the fan works? Very curious about that.
In general, tapping can move parts inside enough so that either:
1. the brushes inside the motor make contact with commutator again so voltage can flow.
2. any stuck/jammed parts inside part are freed so that the motor/actuator works again.
The brushes are typically what wear out on fans.
Thanks for the comment!
Nicely done w/ lots of info!
Amazing video! Thank you for creating this content.
Great explanation thank you sir, I need you help for my honda civic 2006 condenser fan, radiator fan and ac compressor not working i try troubleshoting. All fuse and relay is good conditon and have positive supply what i found no output from ecu A5, A4, when ac turn on . No check engine. Any help will be appriciate thanks
Thks ,Like your video very informative .
Would love to see one troubleshooting different issues expansion valves ect... thank you.
I'll see what I can do, thanks for the comment!
very informative you got here..thanks a lot
how to change or remove radiator fan ? your trouble shooting was excellent.
You made a point around 11 min mark that if the compressor is not on then commanding the fans on with a/c button inside car will not work. This leads me to believe that i may need to get my refrigerant recharged for all this to work - both compressor and fans.
Other things i’ve tried:
I have supplied direct power to fan by jumping at fuse box - they work!
I have bought new fuses - fans do not power on when engine is warm nor with turning on a/c at dash
The refrigerant has been low before but it never stopped my cooling fans to stop working.
Glad I watched this
👍
Hilarious, was freaking out over my fans took a hammer tapped it like you did and viola! Ordered new ac fan in mean time but wtf i was about to screw my wallet.
👍
Helpful and very informative thanks to you sir
I appreciate the comment, thank you!
Great stuff,
Hi i have bit similar issue, but on the radiator fan, any idea what should i check?
thats very good information, keep doing the good work
Thanks so much !!!!
I have a 2007 Honda pilot. My fans do not come on while driving. The only time I can get them to come on is if I turn on the fan cold or hot and put it to defrost or defrost and at the feet and face setting.
Both fans come on. Only when I do that. I have replaced the engine coolant temperature sensor number one.
Any help as how you would proceed from here would be grateful. I am watching your video for the second time.
I appreciate your very informative video and have enjoyed watching it a couple of times. I’m wondering how much of this info is also applicable to my 2005 civic? Or, maybe you have a video for that generation of Honda’s in regard to the cooling and ac fans? You’ve definitely produced the most complete and educational video I can find. I will be a subscriber and look through your older videos to learn as much as I can. Talk to you soon!
I appreciate the comment, thanks! That generation Civic used a slightly different fan setup, it is closer to the Honda Element in this video: ruclips.net/video/vnRTy_0kyC8/видео.html
@@BigDog50001 Thankyou. I will check that one out.
Excellent vid
Thanks for your video! When the A/C condenser fan relay Is blown, the compressori clutch may not be activated? Thanks
Thank you so much for the detailed video, actually I have a civic 2011 only both fans goes on when I turn on the Ac but never goes on even when the temperature goes high based on the details looks like the temperature sensor is bad ??
I would not immediately assume a bad Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor. It is possible it is not getting hot enough to turn on fans (either too cool outside or thermostat stuck open etc). It is also possible that there is an electrical issue or bad relay stopping fans from coming on for either the low or high speed. A quick look at both ECT1 and ECT2 sensors (there are two) and the fan control data on a scan tool would show if the operating temperature is correct (or show a potentially bad ECT sensor) and whether the fans were being activated by engine computer. Unfortunately you would need a Honda capable scan tool for that.

Man thank you for creating this channel and all these videos, I am saving myself thousands of dollars fixing up a 2000 Civic. When I search for any troubleshooting videos related to my Civic, I always try to find something by you regardless of the model or year because it's all relevant and similar enough to my Honda.
Do you rebuild transmissions? I've been watching Precision Transmission and I crave rebuilding my own someday soon. Perhaps I'm just optimistic, though
Thank you, I appreciate the comment! People like you are the reason I make these videos. Precision Transmission is great but I have no interest in rebuilding transmissions lol!
Awesome video! Thanks!
Great video. I have a 2006 civic and it’s temperature went all the way to high but the radiator fans didn’t turn on. I turned on the AC and both the fans started working. I let the heater on high speed and it helped the temperature go down to normal. I then thought of coolant sensors not working and jumped them both with a paper clip. This gave check engine light in the dash but fans still didn’t work. After few hours I opened the radiator cap and it was low on coolant. I had to put almost half gallon in it. Also added some coolant to reservoir since it was empty too. Test drove it again and now the fans are working intermittently and temperature didn’t rise.
Question, could the low coolant let the fans stay off?
Thanks for your help.
Thank you man
