Honda Odyssey : One Cooling Fan Works On High / Both Work On Low?
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 21 июн 2019
- In this video I have a look at a Honda 3 relay cooling fan system. It is a very common way to use two fans with no resistor all while having a high and a low speed option. They are pretty reliable but like anything have their faults. Let's see what is wrong with this one. -Enjoy!

As a dutch guy, it warms my heart to see you have stroopwafels.
Thanks for going over the diagrams. I’m just a “do it yourself” driveway mechanic with no training. Your video helps me to learn more about my autos. I appreciate you spending the time to show us amateurs how the pros do it.
It's always illuminating to watch your process. Nice work.
Great video. The diagnostic approach you do is awesome. Wish I had your test equipment. Thanks for the class.
Hey Eric excellent troubleshooting demonstration! I worked for many years in the electronics field and it always amazes me to see automotive circuits with such hi current ratings.
Your diagnostic and voltage drop videos are my favorite but love all your videos;)
Thanks for the thorough video Eric o another great one I appreciate all the hard work you put into getting quality videos out 👍
Great to see the family are all doing good.. thank you for sharing Mr. O
Thank you Eric. Good job. Have a blessed and safe week.
Eric, I have to say, that was super excellent tutorial! When you explained how the fan works and the diagram explain in powers and grounds etc. I followed it perfectly! Now I got my money's worth on Patreon!! I'm so glad I pay monthly in last two years I've been paying. I find it I get good value of your videos and education!! Thanks Dr O!!
Thanks Eric. Another great insight into the voodoo that you do so well
I really enjoy watching the ele.diag videos you do. All the videos are fantastic just do a great job explaining and showing. Wish I had a mentor like you when I was coming up. The school of hard knocks sucked.
How about just change out the relay for the right side fan. Could be that the spring inside the relay is weak causing a large spike or the contact might be pitted, thus blowing the 30 amp fuse. Happy Fathers day Eric, your family seems very nice. You are a lucky man to have such a wonderful life with them. Lots of LOVE there. I am always looking forward in viewing your next video.
As it appears in this situation, replacing or swapping the relay alone would have no effect since the fuse was blown. Replacing the fuse confirmed that the relay was ok. I do agree that testing the relay in the working circuit would be a good step if you had not checked voltage to the different parts of the circuit, but when you found that it worked, you still have to check the voltage.
Awesome vid, Eric! Simple and clear to understand the circuit and it's operation.
Eric O great video. Learned a lot. Thanks for walking us through the wiring schematic and explaining how the system works and showing us the amp measurement. seeing as how I have an odyssey this was extremely good info to store in the old noggin. Now if I don't lose the noggin I'll know what to look for. I bought the launch for around 400$ +. seems well equipped for use on Hondas. Thanks again for your time and knowledge. ❤️️
That was a really good explanation of the cooling fan operation, Eric. Thanks!
Thank you for taking us along on the diagnosis
First time I had a Stroop Waffle was in Eindhoven, The Netherlands. I got hooked on them right off the bat.
Dude, your kids are growing up so fast!! Beautiful family!!
Thanks for the great video!! Another video demonstrating logical thinking and following a process for troubleshooting. I was kinda surprised the new fuse didn’t blow when you went to high speed, but like you said, it could have been blown since the wreck. Who knows?
Thanks again!!
I'm a short time subscriber and missed this one. You sir are OUTSTANDIG1
Eric, this is a great video, probably one of your best in terms of solid, teachable, educational material. Thumbs up!
No, it's one of many..!
Just subscribed to your channel- you got a lot of great content- thanks for taking us along for the journey- your obviously a pro- I would definitely take my cars to you
I originally came to this channel to gain knowledge, which I did. I stayed for the entertainment, which keeps you engaged. You definitely have a knack for teaching.
Very knowledgeable love watching you fix things that help's me when i have fix my own stuff
Grant me the patience in my own problem determination as displayed by Eric on while working on fixing other peoples problems. Not all Mechanics are equal as proven by this video & many others Eric has posted. Keep up the good work!
When you first mentioned the fans spin ok by hand, then they worked when you started the engine, I thought for sure you were gonna be exploring a bad motor brush. Great video!
Eric,
Great video and diagnosis. Perfect explanation of how the circuit works - or doesnt!
SMA#1
God bless
Paul
Love how you explained the circuitry
HI Eric, Stroopwafels are not from England but from the Netherlands so coffee will do! Greetings from the Netherlands 🤪
It did throw me for a while and I've eaten just about every/all, old traditional UK food going.
They are lovely, place on top of your cup of hot beverage for a several seconds to soften.
@@bostedtap8399 great advice. Googled and found I can get them from my local store. Incredible!
@@WCSPete1 I get mine from Lidl. Enjoy.
They are often served on transAtlantic flights. Also available in some local stores and coffee shops now in the USA!
Coming from a RUclips certified DIYer, that was legit helpful for me. I've learned to read some simple diagrams from your channel but those power windows still get me lol .....nice work and thank you.
Before watching this video I wasn’t very comfortable reading a wiring diagram but watching you explain how the fans worked really put it all together and can see how easy it really is!!
What better way to wake up on a cold Sunday morning than to sit down with a hot chocolate and a informative entertaining SMA video, thanks Mr O ,hope you are enjoying your weekend ,cheers from downunder..
Man! Those two are growing!
Great job, Mom & Dad.
I'm not a mechanic and I only do the minor, easy stuff on my vehicles - but most of your videos are ASMR for dorks. Highly enjoyed! :D
Great walk thru on troubleshooting electrical systems.first you have to know how the system works then start checking the easiest to get at test points. Then on to the harder ones.
Thank you. You have a simple breakdown of the fan system that makes it easier to understand. I am trying to troubleshoot a 2004 Buick Rendezvous cooling fan issue but don’t have the diagnostic tools to help me turn the fans on off. Wish we had an Eric O in our neighborhood.
This was very good. Nice example of following the logic!
I don't really understand wiring diagrams but your in-depth showing how current flows through relays & fuses and how the fans are controlled made it a whole lot easier to understand. I found myself while watching thinking.."well it's got to be this relay"...etc. By the way, vaniller is a great flavor!
Thanks for this, Eric. I'm a new Honda tech and very green when it comes to electrical diag. I struggle to read wiring diagrams and seeing the breakdown is great. I imagine this may become handy in the future.
100% agree with Hearo Zearo's comment. Using the wiring schematic during the troubleshooting process is priceless Eric O. Thanks!
Eric, you really are the quintessential teacher and mentor!! I mean that sincerely. I find myself asking what would Eric do, or how would he handle- insert description of debacle being faced at the moment.
It would be interesting if you would offer your opinion to buying a scan tool, for the home or advanced home mechanic. Something that could read live data, do things like read transmission temps, etc., etc.. I have seen offerings ranging from $70.00 to well over $1K.
Again thank you for your time and attention with explaining the what, how, why, and then the fix. The folks around your neck of the woods are EXTREMELY fortunate to have you in their midst.
Thank you,
Marion.
Taking the time to go over the wiring diagrams was very helpful. Thanks.
If you had time, you would make a great teacher! Not many people have the knowledge and great personality to go with it like you do! Great vid Eric O.....looking forward to the next vid!!!! Just dont get burned out!!!
Very helpful. I am converting a two fan system to that same series/parallel scheme and I would have overlooked an important feature in the fuse layout. When maximum cooling is requested, separate fuses permit one fan to "do its best" even if its partner is dead. It is back to the drawing board for me but I will sleep easier knowing I have at least one HS fan when the system is calling for two HS fans. Many thanks for the extra time you put into the diagrams. The view of the fuse placement "sealed the deal" for me.
Awesome video, was having the exact same issue as you were here so this helped me a lot!! Thanks!!
On my old truck I still have the clutch fan. So when the clutch went out, I replaced it and added an electric fan on a switch. Now no matter what my AC will keep you nice and cool even in rush hour traffic in Phoenix, AZ.
Your explanation of the wiring diagram was great. I think a lot of people are intimated by electrical work because they don't have a solid understanding of electricity and how to read diagrams. As an engineer I've had a lot of practice but I still enjoyed seeing you work out the logic here
You have to be an electronics tech, mechanic, and plumber on today's vehicles.
I seriously love watching the process unfolding, it's funny you work through a problem one at a time at work and never see the process layed out.
Plan the work and then work the plan ;-)
Awesome description, discussion of diagram troubleshooting!
Great demonstration of how this system works!!
This is a great video Eric. Once when I had a fuel pump issue on an 83 town car, I threw a fuel pump in and the circus began. I was ever so thankful I had less than a 1/4 of a tank of gas. After taking the tank down countless time, I went to the wiring diagram. (where I should have started) Found the pump relays. They looked good no pits. and no power! Unplugged the harness, and found the grease had dried out and wasn't making a circuit. cleaned all the connectors applied new grease and problem solved! This was about 5 hours later!
This video helped me understand the overheating problem with my daughters 2007 Odyssey, same issue as this van. No one could figure it out! One fan only on high speed. Broken ground wire! That's 2 vehicle you've helped me with, Thanks again!
Great explanation! Thanks for another great video Eric!
Glad you checked surge or in rush current.
another exceptional video and explanation. Many thanks South Main Auto
Like your thought process!
Suggestion on setting up your amp testing. Use two test leads and clip the fuse in the middle. Circuit is protected, so are your test leads.
Professor O! Great walk through on the electrical diagram. I figured the relay was bad since it was working on low speed and the other 30A powers both at low speed. Doesn’t make sense for the other fuse to blow on the one fan. I bet you are right that it was blown at some other time, like when the other fan was replaced.
Nice job! I Iove how you break it down.
Great video explaining how you follow the wiring diagram.
your kids are really growing love your show
I hate electrical problems.... don't have the equipment to deal with them like you. Glad you've got it though! lol... You Da Man...!
Great explanation of using 3 relays to switch from series to parallel cooling fan function. And...Stroopwaffels!
Learn something new everyday. Thanks Eric O...
Thanks Eric, learning a lot. Now I need to go out and start poking around on my odyssey. i've got the same issue, but don't have a fancy bidirectional gadget...! that's next on my list
Can't wait to see the lift install video! 😉 But honestly- maybe you could make a short shop maintenance video for us young folks? It's always great to learn MeMa's tricks on lift maintenance
Most excellent video and from now on I’ll make sure both fans operate in high and low speed mode after servicing A/C Thanks
Thanks for another great class Dr O!
Awesome. SO thorough, as always!
You may not have found what is causing the fuse to blow. Sometimes it can be really hard to find the cause of a fuse blowing, especially if it’s an intermittent problem. Since changing a blown fuse seemed to fix the problem you did what I would have done. If it continues to blow fuses it’ll be time to track that problem down. Something tells me your gonna be finding the green shmoo somewhere in the circuit or a bad fan or relay or ground. Great job of tracing down the circuit 👍 Eric. It sucks that the owner sorta made it sound like the same problem came back. I think you did a pretty thorough job. Your troubleshooting videos are my favs. Thanks again
Great diagnosis! I love stroopwaffels btw, my brother brings them to us from Holland and they are delicious with coffee.
Another great video Eric. When the papers were sliding off, I wonder how many were like me hollering "Eric, grab the papers!". I have had papers go into fans before, great thing to make ya jump. *LOL*
You are an excellent teacher.
Thanks
Great job again like always
Thxs again Eric, nice lesson learned, and my they are a growing....
Smart guy i see you are Friend. Great Stuff you got going there.keep it up.
This was very interesting keep up the good work
I don't think that I could have logic it out, however I could follow your explanation, so there lies the entertainment (for me), and in time or at least in similar situations, I could execute similar strategies that would help me on other electrical dilemmas. Thanks for your insight; you surely could be an excellent teacher (if you ever decided to explore that venue).
Eric O. Please make more videos where you walk us through a schematic in layman’s terms like this. Can’t tell you how much I appreciate learning from you.
Excellent instruction on the fan wiring and how it works! You missed your calling as a teacher.
Good to see the Fam-Jam. Kids as cute as ever and growing like weeds. Solid diagnostics on the van. I like your theory on prior damage being the culprit. Given the damage and the prior AC issues its likely the problem existed but there was no means for the driver to see symptoms of it.
Helped a lot man thank you
following your excellent diagram presentation I couldn't help but get devious when you said the one high speed leg is powered but it comes to a dead end.. so you could feed that into the horn relay. When the high speed fan circuit energizes, like when sitting in traffic with cars in front of you, the horn starts blowing :D :D
wow....where do you even start on a problem like that....it works.....but not?.. .You totally rock in your job Eric.
You make it look easy, good job!
Test, Don't guess...You are one hell of troubleshooter. Eric O. Two Thumbs Up
Thanks for the lesson Eric.
Good work. Them AC problems are so hard to figure out. I've never seen someone successfully fix them when I get them. Last time i took my car in for this problem, they just replaced the condensor switch, which worked for like 2 weeks then it stopped cooling again. I've owned German cars since then and no more A/C issues!
Not everyone can do it as well as you my friend. Great diagnostic skills Eric.
That Italian tuneup in Italy is known as an American tuneup.
Shouldn’t it be and Eye-talian?
Your children are getting big Mr.O, nice to see everyone is healthy.
Love your vids , mrs. O is such a fox .. lucky man in all aspects in life
Great job Eric.
Good learning diag.
Nice job, thanks for sharing!
Very well put, poss previous damage did not check there work,?,but a good diagnostic, good explain, many thanks.
It's good that you're introducing the concept of a path to ground. It's a better way to clearly demonstrate a complete circuit than simply stating that you need a power and a ground. I think it helps people learning about electrical circuits.
Yes, theory is a prerequisite for proper and successful diagnostic procedures.
Wow Eric ! Way to go again
You are a great Teacher Mr. "O". Thanks for the info. Here's an apple! 🍎
Methodical, logical and understandable. Nice! Thanks👍
Nice and simple for the back of the class.
Slowly teaching myself electronics. It is starting to click
your relay is coming online ... click click
Follow the current path(s) like Eric O and you'll be $ in 99% of the time; the other 1% you gonna have to use some theory, so go learn.
