Grafting Two Varieties of Avocado Onto One Tree

  • I created a self pollinating avocado tree that will give fruit 7 months out of the year. By grafting both Simmonds and Monroe to the same tree the backyard grower can harvest the Simmonds June - August then the Monroe side will be ready to harvest November - February. Also the Simmonds is flowering type A whereas Monroe is type by which means the tree is self pollinating.

    My mom had an avocado tree that she grew from seed in her yard(she might have grafted it with her sister's Simpson avocado). At 5 years the tree was huge. But was not producing any fruit. She had read that it could take 11 years before an avocado tree will produce. She didn't want to wait that long. She went outside with the baseball bat and started hitting the tree. The following year It produced fruit. The year after that it was so loaded down with fruit it started to break the limbs. The avocados were delicious.

    Spot on!!! This is a much smarter way to graft avocados. I'm fond of the idea of grafting multiple varieties onto the tree. It really is crucial to measure the thickness of each one of the sprouts/seedlings. Looks like you'll be uploading weekly, hopefully. Those are some beautiful avocados. Eventually, I'll get the hang of the infamous avocado flowers. I've only recently learned that flowers transition from male to female or female to male. Regardless, your video is super thought-provoking!

    • @SleepyLizard

      with avocados rootstock isn't very important. nor do we have a way to control it because each seed is unique anyhow. That said, we do have preferred seeds to start with. We like bigger seeds so you'd probably be better off starting with a Wurts seed rather than a Hass

    A querie to ask, how do you multi-graft a single shoot of an avocado tree? You demonstrated one avocado tree having two rootstocks, but nearly all avocado trees, from the beginning, grow with one rootstock and, in some cases, more than one- like how you picked your trees to multi-graft. Is there a time period after repotting before grafting?

    • @SleepyLizard
      @SleepyLizard  3 месяца назад

      yes, you never want to subject a tree to more than one stressful event in a 30 day period so it would be good to wait 30 days after repotting before you graft.

    • @SleepyLizard

      I'm not sure exactly what the limit is but yes, you can graft them pretty narrow as long as the diameters match

    Any tips on growing tropical fruits in 7b

    • @SleepyLizard
      @SleepyLizard  8 месяцев назад

      well that could be a challenge because of frost. I don't know much about that but I suppose you'd need to take measures to simulate zone 9b or above...like water and heat lights but I don't really know.

      I'm inclined to think two at the same time might be challenging but maybe do one then come back 6 months later and add another? I gotta experiment with them and see.
