  • If you want to get the most from your avocado tree you need to pay attention to these 4 important details. I wish you luck with your backyard trees.
    Yes, I accidentally said "proton" instead of "photon". And yes, I carelessly referred to honey bees as "him" instead of "her" but you'll still tell me about it in the comments 🤣
    Also, get your avocados at: www.guacfarm.com

    Great video... as usual.
    I'd like to add one more small addition to the fertilization tip, and that's soil cover.
    My friend planted two mango trees at the same time, he then added soil cover to just one of them, (leaves, mulch, cut grass...), and planted Nitrogen fixing plants next to it.
    Both trees were fertilized and watered the same.
    The result: the tree that had soil cover and natural Nitrogen fixation grew almost twice as fast, and looked visibly healthier than the other one.
    From my own experience in the garden, soil cover makes a big difference.
    Soil cover also saves water by reducing evaporation, and promotes healthy bacterial and fungal growth in the soil, which helps convert the nutrients in it into forms that are accessible to the plant, i.e.- improving the tree's nutrition.
    The avocado farmers in our area mulch after pruning the trees, so the pruned branches and leaves become soil cover, and later break down to become compost.

    • @SleepyLizard
      @SleepyLizard  2 года назад +7

      we leave all the organic material under our trees. That soil has been building up for decades. when I mow my rows I always aim the mower to throw towards the trees too.

    Love your garden humor. Thank you so much for your invaluable advice. Question: I have a Zutano, 2 yrs old, Fuerte 9 YO, The Fuerte has never given any fruit and barely flowers. The Zutano had a lot of flowers this year but no fruit. Can you please advise when, in Central Coast California, I am supposed to fertilize. I hear so many differing opinions. I have been fertilizing since February. This year the weather has been really weird, rain and now endless days of no sun and no bees! Also, please do a video, if you haven't already, showing the pruning process. Thanks so much.

    • @SleepyLizard
      @SleepyLizard  Год назад

      Hi Alessandra, you have two very tasty varieties there. the Zutano can take a half pound of 6-6-6 fertilizer every 60 days until it gets fruit then switch to 8-3-9. The Fuerte can take 5lbs of 6-6-6 In September and 5lbs of 8-3-9 in April.
      I will do a vid on pruning.

    I appreciate your recommendations how to get the most from my avocado tree. When the grans come over to visit, I often treat them to chilled fresh avocadoes just plucked from my tree - as a healthy high protein KETO friendly alternative to ice cream. . Sure enough, as soon as they walk through the door, they head for the pantry and ask me, "Gwampa, let's have some more of that wundaful gween vedgebul ice cweam pweez." I hand them each a half of an avocaodo and a spoon - . Once they've all had their fill of avocado, we all go outside and plant the avocado seeds in the backyard,, hoping the family dog doesn't dig them 'em up and eat i'em 'before they have a chance to add to the earth's sustainable bounty by growing into big beautiful avocado trees! to match the one I already have. That family dog will eat anything. I once witnessed him in my backyard woodpile, chewing on a log. That family dog will eat just about anything. Just this morning, I saw him eating a balloon left over from a baby shower the neighbors had last night. Thank you for letting me share once again, Sleepy Lizard.

    Another tip if you don't have much space is plant an A type and a B type in the same hole. Neither the tree branches nor the roots will interfere with each other. Keep them trimmed and open and you'll have great pollination. Another tip for those who don't see much bee activity around their trees is to spray the flowers with a diluted honey spray. One Table Spoon of honey in a quart sprayer of warm water. Do this and the bees will come running.
    I have great luck with these tips in my backyard here in southern California.

    Hey..thanks for all the coaching..great stuff...i have a question that might not be directly related to avocados but fruits and transport in general..
    In the past yrs the fruitfarmers put pectine on the citrus and other fruits...it kills the pores..you cann use the peel no more..and during transit they cook inside instead of freezing what they probably trying to avoid during the trip. Is this true is it to keep them ok?! I noticed that i often buy fruits that seem to be ok but the moment i put them on my fruit bowl in the kitchen to rest till consuming them, they fall apart overnight..often they colour the fruits..pick them all way too easy..like mangos, pineapples, bananas and papayas or citrus too...i think they kill the fruit the moment they do that..putting it in a pectine or parafine bath even..i don't know what it is.. Be excuse it doesn't rise of and the quality is not good anymore..they do are way too expensive to m as me as uch uneatable fruits..but it all countries all farms seem to do this procedure..can you tell something about this whole process..pro's and cons and why you don't cover them up your avocados in mean. If you buy those super expensive citronella from Italy,they come in normal packages too..not covered with shit..i think it's stupidity what they are doing..

    If you only have room in your backyard for one tree, could you graft a scion(s) from complementary avocado tree type to improve fertilization? Do you have a video showing such grafting? How about how/ when to prune your trees(winter? Fall?). Thanks!

    What would be a complimentary timed pollinator for Oro Negro and Hass in central Florida? I read Monroe might be good for the Oro but who can fit a Fuerte in their yard just to pollinate their Hass....
    Excellent video and channel. Where is your farm located?

    • @SleepyLizard
      @SleepyLizard  Год назад

      Hi PPG, we are in Homestead FL. The Oro Negro is flowering type B so you want to plant it with an A. Also, Oro Negro is harvested at the end of the year (November) so it would be good to pair it with a variety that harvests early so you get fruit for a longer part of the season. I think Simmonds is a good choice. It's type A and you start picking in in June, you can leave them on the tree until early October.
      I would not recommend Monroe because it's also type B and harvests at the same time as Oro Negro.

    Should fertilizer be applied when the tree is blossoming or hold off on doing so? Does the tree still need to be watered every 3 days when it is bearing young fruits?

    • @SleepyLizard
      @SleepyLizard  2 года назад +2

      Hi Dianne,
      For trees under 4 years just continue with fertilizer every 60 days no matter what. For mature you can wait till the first little fruit appear. And yes they need that water once they start to bear fruit. You can go a little longer between waterings in Jan and Feb but after that they need every 3rd or 4th day
