I finally grew a tree. 3 stories tall. Solo tree first floor in a So Florida condo. Started indoors, of course it's outdoors. North side of bldg. Some avocados are almost 3 lbs. Huge. This year yielded 24 or so. Wow. What a thrill. I've tried my entire life. Since 18yrs old. I'm 70 now. Yummy avocado. Incredible.

Man, I love this site. After watching the episode on terracotta pots I finally got an avocado to make the transition from water to soil. My avocado, which I refer to as Mr. Avac-Ahdoo so it feels special is doing wonderfully. He's nearly a year old now and is 54cm tall and one of his 36 leaves is 31cm x 12cm. I haven't pruned him yet but he is branching on his own with 2 branches: 13cm and 4cm. I have tried to get so many of these things to grow only to have them die horrible deaths. This one seems quite pleased in his terracotta pot with his oh so cheery pink-flowered Christmas cactus friend next to him. Thanks Scott!!

You can encourage bringing branches any abocado small tree by wiring and bend and hold for few weeks. Once the stem is stressed it will produce branches. I am doing this method for orange, lemon, magnolia, cherry, apple, maple tree also. You can try this, it will help you design the multiple branches.

Great tips n tricks Scott. Thanks. I have two avocado trees growing started accidentally in my compost bin. Then rescued & planted in pots here in Maryland. They thrive year ‘round in our “sun” room. Not spindly at all at about 40cm. Nice & leafy, one main stem but nodes nice & close. I’m guessing lots of light maintains nodal growth closer. Anyhow, i trimmed the very apical tip off. Hoping for nice branches. How about fertilizer? How much, how often?

Good afternoon Scott, question for you! I live in northern Florida in Jacksonville to be exact. I have started about 8 avocado seeds from the paper towel method and it has worked wonderfully. I have purchased a small green house from amazon and placed it on my back patio and placed two of the avocado plants in it. In one day they got fried. The green house is way too hot for any plants in there during this time of year in Florida. So I moved my green house into the back covered lanai (covered porch), where it's not in direct sunlight, and they are doing great. Most if not all were over 30cm long so yesterday I pruned them down above a node. Here's my question. Should I take out the avocado plants from time to time from the green house and place them outside to get the direct sunlight they need? Or are they good where they are at in the green house? Or should I move the green house to the screen in area where they would get more sunlight? I just don't want them to get fried again in this heat.

I had bought an avocado to have for dinner ..when I cut it open, the pit was cracked and it had a root growing already!... I never grown anything in my life..but I decided to put the avocado seed in a cup of water after piercing three toothpicks.
It's been a month and the roots are growing so fast and the leaves are starting to grow. I Saw your videos and you still have the growing stems in water. When should I plant the avocado seed? My stems are only 1/4 th growth than yours. I don't want my first baby tree to die!... I now " talk " to it ( When my mom was alive, she used to talk to her plants. She told me it helps them grow strong and happy) when do I transfer it to a pot? GOD BLESS, PEACE OUT.🙏🤟🥰
[ Edit ] 2 months later..my avocado plant has grown 39 inches. Yayyy👏🤣.... The roots are very long....amd the stem is 39 inches....I need to pot it..
for I still have it in water...ITS GROWING BEAUTIFUL 😍
My very FIRST TIME HAVING A
    GREEN THUMB. 👍 😃 😄
who knows?... I may start a little garden. 🥰

This is the first time I grow an indoor avocado or anything at all, it has around 9 months and it's 40cm tall but with around 10 leaves, each 20cm+. I've tried putting it outside for more sun but some leaves burned out and the wind is too strong so I put it inside again (very hot and humid weather).
I haven't pruned it because I still can't psyche myself up to do it, but what it calls my attention is that the main trunk is still very green, I've been searching everywhere if is it normal to still have a green trunk but I haven't found anything yet. So, how long is it normal for avocado plants to have green trunks?

I think I trimmed my avacado tree too late it's 4 yrs old. It's dying at the top where I cut it. There does seem to be a limb lower on the trunk help

I have a few avocados myself, they're all doing great! However, I have one that has mainly white leaves. Is this rare?

If you're using pits from grocery store avocados, you should check if they've been sterilized (killed) during transport- I don't know where in the world you are, but where I am (USAmerica), avocados brought over the Mexican border are sterilized and cannot be sprouted (but avocados grown domestically in the district of California can be).

      Did they ever grow?
If not and you're trying again you could try putting them in a sandwich bag full of water in the sun. I've tried everything to grow some wrapped in paper towel, the 3 tooth picks in water and a lot more they've sprouted but never grew. When I put them in the baggies full of water in the sun they sprouted in less than 2weeks. Just put them in dirt once the pit split in half and the root was about an inch or two long

I haven't cut my avocado once, since I started it from seed, 3 years ago, I guess? before covid for sure, probably 4. I did however drop something on it in the dark, and broke it off, back in the day, when it was like 3 cm tall. it started a new shoot. i't about a meter tall now... hold on.. yeah, about a meter. But unlike the one you're showing, mine is very leafy, growing outside. I know I need to cut it, but if I do, and it does branch out, I won't have a place for it... so I don't know what to do... and my main reason for coming here is cause it's june now, and I don't know if it's a good idea to do it at this time of year... my previous, unsuccessful attempts to grow avocado, whenever I did cut it, it just started a new leader, and was very much like yours, few leaves on top and that's it.

I've never pruned a tree before but started some avocado seeds a few months ago. It's winter in MI and they're about 2' tall now. Have been waiting until spring to try and prune them.
My question when you prune them do you cut all the leaves off or do you have to leave some for it to grow?
After you prune it once do you have to continue to prune it to avoid the same problem?
Last question. I also started to grow some mango trees about 2 weeks ago they just sprouted. Not sure if you know about those but do you prune those the same way as an avocado tree?
Thank you! Your videos were super helpful

Yes, you continue to prune just like other trees. Pruning encourages branching out at the nodes. The branches should grow (two or more), once they are 6-8 inches, prune them all again. More pruning at all branches encourages a bushier tree with many limbs. Think oak tree vs very tall spindly royal palm tree.

I just bought a 7 foot hass avocado tree on line. It's tall and skinny and just a few single leaves growing out the main trunk every 10 inches or so. How can I stop it from growing tall without killing it?

My plant was hacked two days ago April 3, 2022. It was 36" tall with 7 leaves and new growth at the top. I sits near a sunny window with venetian blind slates opened. According to this video I should have cut it back lower. I'll wait to see what happens to this plant to see if it grows OUT. I have three pitts sitting in water. I hope to not have to go through this silly skinny tall stem again. I'm thinking of moving my one arm LED grow light to this room, hover it over the plant, but turn it off come summer.

You know I used to grow avocado plants like nothing but lately they just dont even sprout anymore. I get my avocadoes from the store then implant the seeds, do you think they are doing something to the seeds now days? Specially with the rise price in avocados. I just really wonder...
