@@koolaidshower it survived the winter! it was looking kinda brown and crunchy over this last spring, but its getting lots of new leaves and its actually making bark!!! I accidentally dropped mine and it broke the stem I was so sad. Then I wondered why it grew so much faster than the other one. I didn't know i accidentally pruned mine by dropping it 😂
What temperature do you think you had the cutting in water in? I heard it has to be warm to propagate them. Also how is growing now? How many roots and is it in dirt yet?
So I just pruned mine after about a month of debating and mine only had leaves at the top so I was really worried because that's where all of its leaves were but I did it anyways and it was just an ugly little stick poking out of a seed and nothing ever grew back for about 3 weeks... and then after e weeks it exploded and now is growing 2x faster than before and after about 2 weeks of growth it's already twice as big as it was before I pruned it. I'm thinking of doing it again because it grew a 2nd trunk and now is growing so tall so fast. I highly recommend pruning. Just be patient because it will take about a month for it to heal and start new growth. Just make sure you prune just above the node not below it I think that's where most people mess up is they cut below the node and the node is where the new growth comes from so if you cut that off that's where the new growth would have started so cut just above a node.

I live in Germany, and have a avocado too, it is in a special selv watering pot, with special soil. It live all time indoor on a east facing window. I have to water it every week with approximately 700ml water in witch I put 10-14 drops of fertilizer and 2 drops of trace elements for plants. The avocado is doing well for two years now (not shure). That's my experience and I want to share it. :)
I have an avocado tree that I've never pruned (I was afraid to). It had grown to seven feet twice. The first time the top bent over about 4 feet from the bottom. Another limb has grown from the bend of the top and is again above the curtains. It is from the pit and about six years old. I would like to prune it, but where? There are no leaves on the original 4 foot pit stem. I live in zone 7 and am afraid it's too cold too long with too little sun to plant outside.

I have had my avocado plants for almost two years and an easy watering sign is when the leaves start to hang or sack a little. The tips might be brown sometimes but it still grows in height so I guess it's happy anyway. It's really fun to grow plants from seed especially from foods so to speak.
Yep. Pruned mine for the first time since I grew it from a seed. There are actually 8 plants now. What started as an experiment is now an obsession. LOL I took the clipping and shoved it into the dirt with the seed and stem. Maybe it will root? We'll see. Living in the Pacific Northwest of USA the plants will have to be indoors. Even then, the south/west window ledge is currently 61F/16C while it is 39F/4C outside. My room is 66F/19C. So I have some of the plants under a growlight that gets the surrounding air temps to 72F/22C. Thank you for the tip about the dampness of the soil. I have them all in those self-watering pots with the wick that seems to bring up way too much water as the soil is constantly damp. I guess I will just stop putting so much water in the reservoir and will move them to different pots when I can.
My whole top died, so I saw lil nods on the long trunk and topped it ,and now I have top leaves.... I have 4 more to trans plant..in water now...I lost my biggest ,it showed all of a sudden, didn't have a chance to bring in.but learned my lesson!
Very nice video. My indoor plants had a problem with chlorine, lead and other contaminants in my city water. Buying distilled water cost too much, so I bought a Brita water pitcher that filters out chlorine, lead, etc. It cost me less than $25 usd and filters about 300 gallons a year before I need to buy a $15 replacement filter. My plants are less stressed and its easier to control my fertilizer use.
I was ruthless with my pruning, cutting it wayyyy back tp the first node. The stalk grew back super thick with a second branch starting at the base and nice big leaves. Im sp glad i took the chance!😊

I think I’ve been watering a bit more than I should, I grew it from Water so I thought it would need a lot. Cheers for the vid :D great info
As long as you still have a node and the stem is still somewhat green, it should be ok, I believe. The chlorophyll in the stem will help provide energy to the node to grow. So if you don’t have leaves but the stem is still green then the node should be ok.
In my area the water is horrible, so I boil my water for about 10-15 minutes on the stove, then allow to cool, and this seems to get rid of whatever is in my water that my plants didn't like!!
I'm sure if you prune it at that size, and apply rooting hormone to the cut part, you will end with two avocados for the price of one 15 to 30 days after, if they are taken good care and root. Thanks for the video, it gave me lots of ideas!
Thanks for making this video. @@zarahya6123 Yeah the stem is getting thicker. It's probably similar to my index finger in thickness. When I first pruned it after a couple weeks some new buds started emerging all over the plant. I don't know what kind of climate you live in but if you can put your new ones outside that would probably be best.

Sounds like you have a some beautiful plants! I know it's scary to prune. But in the end, it will give you a more robust plant that will grow more branches. The one's I chopped are already starting to sprout again in multiple places!
Water distiller off Amazon was super cheap and what I use. Hit it hard and it can make 6 gallons in a day. I live in an rv, so they don’t take up a bunch of space and it’ll pay for it’s self in not time. 😁
Aww I feel you when it comes to pruning my plants but thank you so much for sharing!! I was just about to prune my avocado plant but I spotted your video, measured my plant and it has two more inches to grow lol!! PHEW!!🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️

I started growing an Avocado plant with my mum when I was 11. It is 10 years old now and it is way taller than 2 meters! It reaches the ceiling and has to bend because of this. It was indoors the whole time. I love the big Avocado! :)
I live in Texas and I successfully had 3 out of 4 of my seeds sprout and I also found distilled water down here to be extremely cheep for a gallon is about 1 us dollar which is extremely good for me since I also own carnivorous plants
Growing mine in a pint of water as I saw a video about growing from seed in damp tissue and a ziplock bag and then to a jar of water but had no idea where to go from there. It's now about 14" in height two tiers of leaves and a few baby leaves on the stem and further growth at the top through stem. It literally has no soil so I had to chuckle when you said they don't like much water 😂😅🫣 Maybe I should experiment with this and see how much water becomes too much without soil 🤭
Fill a gallon jug with tap water, and let it sit for 24 hours opened. The chemicals they treat it with will diminish dramatically. It is not perfect, but it helps!
I have the same plant as yours same size and shape and two thin stem .I am very scared of cutting 😢 but after your advice its necessary . Will try my luck and thanks for this video .In India Avacados are very rare so I need this kind of help.
Question! I just got one avocado plant and you can tell it has never been pruned because there's only one thin stem with three leaves on top. So can I prune it even if it doesn't have leaves on the bottom?
I have already did the initial clipping, and not sure when the next clipping will happen. Unfortunately I can not send a picture of the 2 that I have. Approximately 6 weeks apart. Friday, 3/22/24 9:33 EST USA Port St. Lucie, Florida
@@aliciascruffies9817 You just use it either like bay leaves or banana leaves. So you can wrap meat or fish in the avocado leaves then cook it like that or you can add it to soups, stews, sauces, or we also like to add it to our beans. It's very versatile
Thanks for the video! Quick question: I just planted the my first Avocado plant I grew from seed, it's been growing fine so far, but now most of the leaves are hanging down instead of standing up. I'm afraid of overwatering it, as the soil is still a bit moist. If anyone has an idea lemme know :)
Hi I've put this video on hold before you make the cut, trepidation. I'm going to prune mine tomorrow and they're just single stems. I'll have to drum up some Dutch courage before I do it, (a very large whisky). Hey ho, here we go, I'll watch...
Avocado plants don't like full sunlight. That kills the leaves. Yeah they originated from Mexico. But they usually obscured by other plants. So like inderect light because of it. If you put them in full (summer) light it fries them. Also the ground doesn't have to be completely dry.
apparently you can propagate the top cutting from the pruning! I've never done it but a few people have told me it's possible. just stick it in some water
What do you do when there arent any leaves at the bottom of the stem? I have a pretty tall avocado plant with some huge leaves at the very top, but there are only like 3 very small leaves at the bottom. I love your video's! And thanks for all the tips :)
The leaves on the bottom grow first as the plant gets taller leaves sprout at the top, so that will never be a problem. You still have leaves at the bottom so you can still cut don’t worry it will be fine. (:
Hey Emma, thank you for your video! I have a quick question. So we have an avocado plant, and we’ve never pruned it 😂. Now it’s 4 feet tall and it’s got a single stem for 2.5 feet and two branches both for 1.5 feet. We don’t know what to do and if we should prone it now. Any advice? Thank you!

I NEED an update!!! I also have an Avocado plant. I just replanted it into a bit bigger of a pot, and I trimmed it and everything. So, I need to know, is there light at the end of the tunnel!!!
Heya! Also it 'can' produce fruit if grown from a polyembryonic variety. You can know which one is a clone of the parent by seeing which one is the most vigorous and strongest growing one out of all :)
The weird thing for me is that when I pit them in the windows with the most sun where I live, bc Canada LMAO they actually get burned by the sun and I have to move them to windows with less sun
Hi, live in the UK myself, my avocado is about nearly 3ft tall, haven’t pruned it, only 1 stem, can’t bring myself to do it 😂😢 this is the furthest I’ve ever got one as usually once getting around 10 leaves they drop and the plant dies.

I've just grown my very first avocado tree from pit! It's grown up to 8 Inches so far. My main concern right now is that I live in Canada. Should I prune soon or is it too close to the cold Autumn months now and I should wait until Spring at this point? Should I pot it in soil soon and before the pruning?
My son and I grew an avocado plant from seed as a kind of experiment. Now we have grown to love it, but I never pruned it 😬. It is probably 12+ inches now and only has leaves on the top. Is it too late to prune it?
I watched other videos and it said to cut off All the leaves, Now im worried! The stem looks yellowish! Should i bring it inside out of the sun. Its August here, Summer
If you mean that your plant only has one set of leaves I dont think its very smart to prune it... as she said the plant needs the leaves to photosynthesise:))

I hope my new ones (I have 6 seeds in water atm) will be a little more lively, since I’m going to attempt to bonsai a few of them :)
@@zarahya6123 Yeah haha I don't really know. I'm really new to gardening and growing things from seed but it never gave me any issues. The sad thing is I will have to give my plant away or sell it in a couple years. But yeah those stupid cats! I have 4 and they are responsible for 99% of all plant deaths in my house. I don't know what kind of climate you live in but if you can put your new ones outside that would probably be best.
My avocado grew to 2feet outside this summer in an entirely shady garden...just stuck a pit in a Begonia pot and after a few months, I have a 2 foot tall plant with 8 med sized leaves on top and 6 new leaves budding out now. I really don’t want to prune it...I’d only have about 3 leaves left...I have 3 more started so will definitely prune these when they’re not too tall...I have mine in a very hot and sunny South facing window and noticed two of my leaves are getting a darker color...right now they’re light green, not deep green...I’ll give it morning sun but dapped afternoon sun and see how it does...very exciting to discover this plant in my garden...may try to Bonsai one, or two, of them...love your videos....thanks...Pat
ah interesting! I'll have to look into that! Thanks :)
Did you buy a stove-top distiller or an electric one?
Aww I feel you when it comes to pruning my plants but thank you so much for sharing!! I was just about to prune my avocado plant but I spotted your video, measured my plant and it has two more inches to grow lol!! PHEW!!🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️
I am in Islamabad. I had an avocado plant and this year after some five years we had a huge crop. About a hundred lovely big fruit.
Prune away!! I didn't (until recently) & got the spindly stem until I snipped it (scared also) & WOW!! so many new shoot growth.
Excellent video full of very useful information!! Now I see where I’ve gone wrong, especially evil salt in water as we have a nasty water softener which has killed all my house plants!
help I’m like you i was so excited to grow my plant from seed ❣️I don’t have the best lighting and i don’t get direct light from my window..it seems to love being by my 20 gal fish tank and that small light and i’m worried that if i move it closer to the window( it’s across the room from the window) that it will feel colder….i just don’t want to disturb it it it’s good where it’s at…ugh I’m in love with it❣️❣️
I LOVE YOUR SPIRIT! you kissed the plant! smiling at chu!
Aww thank you
Oooooh, u're soo amazing! I love your video) Me too now growing several Avos & keeping an eye on them all the time, cuz they're still so tiny & quite )))) (it's been couple moths since sprouted & one is just cracking a seed by now)
I started growing an Avocado plant with my mum when I was 11. It is 10 years old now and it is way taller than 2 meters! It reaches the ceiling and has to bend because of this. It was indoors the whole time. I love the big Avocado! :)
sounds awesome!
btw did it grow flowers?
Hi, no, it didn't grow flowers. No flowers, no fruit, just leafs. :)
Have a nice day!
Love your vibe! 🧡
Thanks :)
New grower glad to be here
Good tips.I am living in malaysia.lam learning n have successfully grown avocado. It brows well .Your vedio is very useful
Aww thanks! So glad you found it helpful :) Good luck with your avocados
I live in Texas and I successfully had 3 out of 4 of my seeds sprout and I also found distilled water down here to be extremely cheep for a gallon is about 1 us dollar which is extremely good for me since I also own carnivorous plants
Just pruned mine (it was at a metre ish tall). 🤞🤞🤞🤞It recovers well.
My leaves keep browning and then more will grow. Your video helped me work out why, so thank you.
Yay so glad I could help :)
I have the same plant as yours same size and shape and two thin stem .I am very scared of cutting 😢 but after your advice its necessary . Will try my luck and thanks for this video .In India Avacados are very rare so I need this kind of help.
You've got this!
Not me crying bc I did this today😭my baby it's only for the best interest
You gave me the strength to prune my baby. Thank you.
No worries! I got you ;)
That explains why my avocado plant is not growing, it's so far from the window! 😅 Thanks for the tip
Question! I just got one avocado plant and you can tell it has never been pruned because there's only one thin stem with three leaves on top. So can I prune it even if it doesn't have leaves on the bottom?
same question hahaha
I have already did the initial clipping, and not sure when the next clipping will happen. Unfortunately I can not send a picture of the 2 that I have. Approximately 6 weeks apart. Friday, 3/22/24 9:33 EST USA Port St. Lucie, Florida
Gurl ur so funny! Thanks for a wonderful video!
Thank you very much for your tips of growing avocado 🥑
Hi , I totally understand about pruning your babies , Is there an update on how they are going now ?
I hate pruning also ugh, I'm so proud of you 👏
You can always cook with avocado leaves you don't have to just compost them
Wow, How?
@@aliciascruffies9817 You just use it either like bay leaves or banana leaves. So you can wrap meat or fish in the avocado leaves then cook it like that or you can add it to soups, stews, sauces, or we also like to add it to our beans. It's very versatile
@@notreaventurecommenc Wow, thank you. I love using bay leaves. I can't wait to try this💐
Thanks for the video! Quick question: I just planted the my first Avocado plant I grew from seed, it's been growing fine so far, but now most of the leaves are hanging down instead of standing up. I'm afraid of overwatering it, as the soil is still a bit moist. If anyone has an idea lemme know :)
Hi
I've put this video on hold before you make the cut, trepidation. I'm going to prune mine tomorrow and they're just single stems. I'll have to drum up some Dutch courage before I do it, (a very large whisky).
Hey ho, here we go, I'll watch...
Hahah love it! It's so much easier doing it with someone! I probably wouldn't have done it myself if I didn't make this video ;) you got this!
Avocado plants don't like full sunlight. That kills the leaves.
Yeah they originated from Mexico. But they usually obscured by other plants. So like inderect light because of it.
If you put them in full (summer) light it fries them.
Also the ground doesn't have to be completely dry.
Thanks a million my dear❤
You could try to root the top. You may need rooting hormone maybe, but as long as its still young growth without bark it may possibly root.
Good info...thanks a lot
im so proud of you
Oh my... I just pruned 2 as well... makes me cry 😢😭🤧 but if is good for the plant, is good for me ( i'll keep the stwm with leaves for few days😁 )
apparently you can propagate the top cutting from the pruning! I've never done it but a few people have told me it's possible. just stick it in some water
I have an avocado that has roots and I finally planed it. The leaves come out and then one at a time looks like they dry up and fall off.
Same with mine. Did it die? 😢
Its either getting sunburned or it has clay soil in thinks thats what its called
I'm proud of you 👏
I’m starting my mango and avocado plants
Ooh very exciting!
Thank you so much! Love your video
Thank you for these awesome videos. You are amazing!
Aww thank you
Great helpful tips !
Do I wait till my tree has a second set of leaves to prune it? 🥺
Hey. What's up? The browning at the leaf tips could also be an indication of too much ferts. Blessings.
Interesting! I'll be sure to fertilise a bit less next year too! Thanks!
Any advice? Thank you!
Maybe trim each of the branches down to just above the lowest leaf?
Hello! Loved your video ❤ Wondering how they are now.. I don't have Instagram and I cant find an update video aswell? If you did make a video with an update let me know! I'm curious to see how this ended 🤗
After the chop, two growth points formed at the tops and they started branching out a bit. I did end up giving these away before I moved though 😅
Could you do an update on your avocado plant ? Pleaaaaase??
I NEED an update!!! I also have an Avocado plant. I just replanted it into a bit bigger of a pot, and I trimmed it and everything. So, I need to know, is there light at the end of the tunnel!!!
You could put that pruned part in water and root it. It's called Cloning
Oh interesting! I didn't realise that was possible!
Heya! Also it 'can' produce fruit if grown from a polyembryonic variety. You can know which one is a clone of the parent by seeing which one is the most vigorous and strongest growing one out of all :)
Oh very interesting! Thanks for that info :)
Loving this video, thank you for your help. You live in England but I’m guessing your not English, you have an American twang
Can you show your plant/tree now 3 years later I did this on your video and mine is really tall ready to transplant to a 24 " pot
Ahh mine is still in water and still quite small and I'm already stressed about pruning it!
I know it's scary but it'll be worth it when it grows back stronger and healthier!
I live in Switzerland. Mine has been in a pot outside since I planted it (almost a year ago) went down to -5°C, it's still growing and amazingly still alive xD
No fertilising, I water when I remember (rarely ...), haven't pruned it yet (just as scared as you are)
Let's see how it does when spring comes along! :D
Oh wow I' surprised it's growing so well outside in winter!
-6C is usually the threshold for mexican varieties.
Are you American? It seems like your accent is mainly American but then it changes. So interesting!! Thanks for the tips. I definitely needed them.
Yeah I'm half American half British, grew up in the states but live in the UK now. My accent defo fluctuates randomly 😂
Thx for vid!
Can i prune and leave no leaves on the plant? All leaves are currently at thr very top! Thx.
Great video! Would love to see an update!
I watched other videos and it said to cut off All the leaves, Now im worried! The stem looks yellowish! Should i bring it inside out of the sun. Its August here, Summer
I have a question ~ what if the seed to the second node has no leaves at all ? 🍃✨ should I still prune it ? 😣
If you mean that your plant only has one set of leaves I dont think its very smart to prune it... as she said the plant needs the leaves to photosynthesise:))
One of my plants has one long spindly stem and all the leaves but one have fallen off lol Should I prune it or is it a lost cause?
Oh no! I'm not too sure because you'd think it would need leaves to grow, but you could always try?
Mine is still in water and doing really well. Should I still prune it or should I wait until I put it in the soil?
You can do it in either water or soil. But if it's the right size, there's no harm in doing it now :)
