    OMG! I wished I found this video 8 years ago! My Florida Avocado tree took 8 and a half years to produce. I saw a video to help pollinate it spray warm water and a teaspoon of honey on the branches to attract bees 🐝 and it totally worked! We had 5 Avocados that summer and this summer almost a full tree of Avocados!

    As Tom once said "Avocados make people happy and happy people make the world a better place". This video proves that. You're constantly smiling throughout the video, making the day of countless people, like me. My challenge is still trying to figure out exactly what's the main culprit or reason for my avocados' struggle. But I'm speculating (about my main avocado) that it's Pithyum root rot, not Phytophthora, Potassium and other nutrient deficiencies, too compacted soil, malfunctioning drainage holes, imbalanced watering, temperature fluctuations, poor drainage, although the peat substrate to perlite ratio is 3:2 give or take and insufficient light (dawn- 7 am; dusk-4:45 pm). I'm way too scared to fertilize it but I have to. My other avocado, that was a gift for my aunt started dying back rapidly, especially after I repotted it in a smaller pot and different soil. Basicaly half the stem is already black and the few leaves on top have dried up and are crispy, I've been trying to save it from root rot over the last few months, but the cold and transplant shock, it just would not pull through. But my other avocados are looking amazing.
    Every one of your videos are so inspiring and education, yet are extremely interesting and top notch overall. Even the oldest videos of you fishing and or bass fishing!

    I was gifted some garden-grown avocados by my father-in-law recently. We threw them in the freezer to keep them fresh for meals since they were plucked out and would rot. I was cutting one of them open to make a delicious guacamole sauce and BOOM I saw some roots growing from the seed. I put it into water immediately and it grew to the size of my arm in 3 months. I was wondering if I could keep it growing in a pot and came across your video. You have such an amazing enthusiasm toward your work man. It was a fun 10 minutes, you made my day!

    Thank you for the information about sunburn, I was not aware. Mine will probably have some extremely harsh sun soon (spring in Australia), it's already too hot to be in my yard after 10am. It's time to update on the avocado I planted outside, along with the apple seeds and the rare albino avocado.
    I initially thought I planted the avocado too deep. But it doesn't mind it. Of course in the first few days of being planted in the ground, it got stunted. But it bounced back not long after after the raining season started. And I think it's starting to grow. I planted it when it had 3 leaves and a decent root system. And it hasn't dropped its leaves. Now, obviously, it's gonna have some damage from the wind and occasionally heavy rain we get. But it'll be alright. I haven't decided whether I'll put some protection or uproot it and put it indoors. But we'll cross that bridge when we get there. After all, I've got to worry about the heat waves in mid summer.
    The albino avocado which has white leaves is growing slowly. But it has a thick trunk and a well-developed root system. It's in water, so I know how the roots are doing. The new root growth is happening at the bottom inch of the cup, so it's not growing as many lateral roots as some of my other avocado, but it's alright. I'll keep it in water for a while.
    As for the apple seeds, I planted 10 of them in the ground, only 3 of them germinated. But there might be another slower one just sprouting. The 3 successful or fastest ones are doing fantastic. Since apples thrive where I live, I'll keep them out. But I will seperate them from one another. After all, we don't want them getting their roots crowded.
    I think I'm getting pretty amazing results. I'll update you on my potted avocados. And... my original avocado. I might update on my mango as well. I might try growing cherries from cuttings as well. Another long message, I know. But I'm really excited for some of my plants, some that is. Not everything is perfect.

I now live in Abruzzo Italy which is EU zone 9 and I am going to attempt Hass from seed. With the climate change situation I think this area could really adapt to avocado well. We are already becoming a kiwi powerhouse. Nobody thinks of Italy for kiwis and I too was shocked, but they do amazing in Abruzzo.

    Great description of the energy coming from the sun. The detail I would add to that explanation of photosynthesis.. is how it uses sunlight, plus water, plus CO2 from the air to create energy (sugars).
    Plants need carbon and they get that one from the air! The other nutrients get sucked up by the roots.
    Keep thriving!

    • @SleepyLizard

      yep, any regular potting soil will do. I have a buddy who swears by Happy Frog but I just get a load of regular potting soil from the nursery supplier for myself. I augment my potting soil with 8-3-9 fertilizer.
      For my mature trees that are in the ground I use 5lbs per tree of 8-3-9 in February and 5lbs of 6-6-6 in September. If you have older trees in pots you'll want to use the same timeline but significantly less fertilizer. Just go around the rim of the pot with a ring of pellets is all...not close to the trunk.

      There’s 3 options and all 3 have pros and cons. Bring in inside of the hose during winter months, keep it in a heated greenhouse in a pot or (the one I’m mostly curious about) plant it in ground inside of the greenhouse. My uneducated guess is planting it in ground inside of a greenhouse is the best option to maintain a strong and healthy tree, but, is there any dangers to the tree this way? I've got a 5 or 6 year old avocado in a pot... but REALLY need to get it in a bigger pot. It's about 5 ft tall by now, but has only two side-shoots. Should I trim it back to get more branching? (Not really trying to grow fruit).

    • @SleepyLizard
      @SleepyLizard  11 месяцев назад

      yes you should prune from the top to stimulate lateral growth. Don't do the transplant and pruning at the same time. Do one first and wait a month then do the other. you don't want to do two stressful events in the same month.

Furthermore, what fertilizers are necessary in a pot versus growing in the ground. I found some special Avocado (& Citrus) fertilizers in the local garden center with N/K: 4,5/6 or would you recommend N/P/K: 6/6/6 like in your other videos?

    Hello to you. Although this video is not about mangoes...... I have an important question to ask you about growing a mango tree.
    What is the reason for grafting a mango plant grown from a seed? Does grafting make a tree produce fruit faster than a tree that just grew from seed?
    Does the growth process of a grafting tree grow faster?
    I thank you in advance for your answer.
    I really like the videos you upload every time.

      Hi Yoav, This vid does a better job explaining it than I could by replying: ruclips.net/video/j5WFvuYx4jc/видео.html
      Everything I say about avocados in this vid applies to mango. One thing about mango though...certain varieties don't require grafting. They are known as polyembryonic and their seeds will grow genetic replicas of the mother tree. So depending on what type of mango you got the seed from it may or may not require grafting.

    Hello - great information and enthusiasm. I have a young Kona Sharwil and a Reed, and live in zone 10a with temps above 100 degrees for a good part of the summer, and very intense sun. After burning the leaves on the Reed, I now have these young trees under a 60% shade cloth, and I sprayed the leaves with Surround WP for additional protection. They are both now looking happy and healthy, but I realized that avocado trees can be sensitive to the intense sunlight in my zone. I up potted the Reed from a 15 gal pot to a 25 gal pot, and the Kona Sharwil from a 3 gal pot to a 15 gal pot. I want to add a Nabal to the group. Will I need to take the same precautions every year with these trees, or will I eventually be able to stop using the shade cloth and Surround? Thanks for the informative video!!

    • @SleepyLizard
      @SleepyLizard  Год назад +1

      Hi nerucognitive, certain varieties have a hard time with areas with high sunlight. Varieties that grow a lot of leaves have a better time. It's my understanding the Sharwil is from Hawaii so I would expect it to do well in 10a. Good luck with your collection
