Great video! Just started watching your channel. Can't wait till your harvest this year, 2023, definitely want to order some avocados from you and maybe a tree some day, I'm in Wisconsin so it would have to be indoors. I did grow a tree from a store bought avocado 3 years ago and it's doing pretty good. I know I'll probably never get good fruit from it but it's a great house plant. Lol
My avocados sometimes really confuse me, especially with the watring. My biggest avocado, along with my other 2 from late 2021 or early 2022 that have survived have also started to get root rot. However I started to feel asif my avocado was thirsty, despite suffering root rot and after I watered it (considerably), it actually bounced back briefly, which unfortunately, not long after, it began wilting again. But becuase I let it dry for too long, even though the soil was wet, a few of its newest leaves curled and overall the avocado is stunted. I know avocados hate being in dry soil, but in my case I had to let it dry for a little longer.
Not all investments are measured with dollar signs. Your decision was such an investment. To make that decision a reality you bought yourself a farm and run it as a business. A brilliant strategy. Though I heard you talking about your farm and investment strategies, I was thinking about those lessons and how they might apply them to my own situation. Today, I planted a mango seed, I haven't eaten the mango. I did plan on eating it, but right now it's 11:30 P.m, so it's very late. I put the glass over the seed to kind of give it that greenhouse effect. But the glass was on the edge, and so when I picked up the pot that the seed was in, it slipped and fell. It broke into dozen of timy pieces. A few hour ago, the same thing happened with the new glass. I'm too clumsy! So, I'll probably use a transparent, or at least a translucent bag until it becomes a seedling. I let the seed exposed to the dry air for several hour, hope that won't hurt it. I'll water it more for the first few, very few weeks, then take it back. I won't fertilize it until... probably early March. Ah man, always getting reminded of my previous mango. This time, I'm not noticing any mold whatsoever, whatsoever. However, it does appear a little wrinkly. It might be drying up, I have to put a bag. I haven't used (yet) the other methods of germinating mango seeds just because I don't have almost any experience (this is my second mango, eveeer) and I haven't "studied" the other methods. Hopefully, no spider mites and no root rot.

Another great vid! Got nailed today by a one pound Nesbitt right on the nose from about 6 feet up today while picking🤣. Must have come loose while picking one near it. It hurt but it's all good.
Thanks tom for your videos. You bit me with the green thumb. Im in Texas & i really wanted a mango tree but its difficult to find them at any nursery, so i started sprouting my own. im up to 13 saplings right now & im excited to have a fruit tree orchard in the future. Im addicted to growing all kinds of vegetables & plants now too. It gets me in trouble with the wife because i spend too much time in the yard now lol. But im glad i ran into your videos & I hope one day I may be able to visit your farm to hangout & learn some knowledge.
Loved this video! Opportunity Costs was like a spiritual awakening in college. Every dollar I spend is a dollar I can't spend on something else. Do you rot the mangoes the same way as you do avacados. I'm wondering how a small tree farm would get a lot of mango seeds without peeling and harvesting the meat of each one? I just recently realized if I bought a 3 gallon mango tree and kept it for 3 years, repotting it, my roi is better than stocks if I can sell it.
Iguess you remember me... Man... you're doing great, i knew you are intelligent, people think farmers are stupid but they never realize they are the smartest. That was a great speech! The day i visit united states you and your farm will be on my travel destinations😁 before that i will ask for you address, a matter of time (the great resource) Cheers, wish you the best as always.

Thank you Aneka, and as I've told you before I watch your vids even though I don't speak your language. but you have a soothing voice and cadence and your farm makes for beautiful scenery.
And I also want to mention that over the last several days, the soil of my avocado has been smelling horrible. There's a foul odor coming from the bottom of the pot. There's some fungus gnat larvae crawling too. There's a lot of rotten or dry roots near the surface, but when I dip my finger very deep into the soil, I accidently break a root, but these are ususally the healthy roots. So, the root rot might be affecting 15-20% of the root system. The smell was a bit off two weeks ago, but wasn't too bad, mainly near the surface. But 4-5 dyas ago, when one of the leaves got some brown spots in the matter of a few hours, which quickly killed the entire leaf by the next day, the soil smelled so bad, I started coughing and sneezing, perhaps the main culprit was the particles or small specs from the soil when I dug to sniff it. Nevertheless, the avocado still has over 30 leaves and still has a few, that don't have any brown tips, but it's concerning the fact that a lot of my avocados are wilting, not just my best one, and have slow and otherwise mild, but annoyingly consistent root rot. I think they'll be alright!!!
Whether you make money or not, every tree is an investment in the future 😊 one of my neighbours has a walnut in their front garden and most likely has no idea that's what it is. I'm planning to grab some for germination this year and get some walnut trees going. It's one of the slowest growing species- they say you grow it for your grandkids. Walnuts across Europe were decimated by demand for furniture in the 18th and 19th century and have never recovered. I love growing trees.
Also so fun that you heard an interview with the Beast from The Chase! I passed an audition to go on that quiz show but filming dates got moved and I went to Japan for a year so missed that opportunity
Yes I agree most people think of investment as money and return as more money but I look at it as an allocation of your scarce resources and the return is accomplishing the goal you set for yourself. If that goal is sitting on a swing under a walnut tree sipping lemonade with your grandchildren then as you say planting a walnut tree is absolutely excellent investment.
@@SleepyLizard it's a very popular show here in the UK, on TV at 5pm most days. There are different Chasers each with a different nickname- the Beast, the Dark Destroyer, the Governess. They are top trivia people and the role of the contestants is to try and answer questions to earn money for a community pot that they then have to race the chaser for, seeing who can answer the most questions in a short amount of time (I think 2 minutes but can't remember off the top of my head). It's very entertaining!
When we are in rainy season, they get rained on every day but it’s also very sunny here so they dry quickly. In the dry season I will irrigate every second or third day.

Hello Tom🤗. Jan here in Houston. Did any of your moringa seeds sprout??? If not, then I will send you some that will sprout for sure 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻. I have 11 new trees that are all less than 1 month old and are growing like crazy!
@@SleepyLizard That’s totally awesome!!!!! Now you need to be the harvester of the leaves to dry them ( in the shade, not in the sun). Your wife can incorporate the dried leaves and use them in soup, in and dish that she chooses. It’s very nutritious 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻. You can sell moringa trees for a nice profit👍🏻🌱🌱🌱
@@SleepyLizard ok thank you! I’ve been wanting one of those forever. Everyone is sold out and I can’t seem to find them in PR either. They must be rare or something. I just love the haas qualities for perfect guacamole. We only have Popenoe and some unnamed mutts and while delicious, they are all too low in fat and too watery for guac, in my opinion.
I can get seeds to sprout, but 2 months of being frozen over winter just kills them. I feel a little despondent, its almost like I'm tormenting the poor things. Are there any frost hardy varieties at all?
@@SleepyLizard I'll go search for those, maybe not the same here in Australia, NSW, but its somewhere to begin! Thanks, I'm bingewatching your channel and my juices are flowing lol
regular potting soil, sand, perlite, and 6-6-6 fertilizer...I didn't add sand to that batch though. I know know my ratios I just mix it on a tarp till if feels right
Hey Bob in different videos here there I talk about Germinating seeds in Damp moss or damp paper towels. I probably should’ve gotten into it in more detail on this video.
@@zawadix9574 ok then I think it's good to have a mix of early mid and late varieties as well as a mix of flowering type A and flowering type B to maximize pollination. Do you know your USDA hardiness zone? Are you in the US or another country?
Remi, we don't grow bananas from seed. When I want a certain type of banana I buy a little plant. As it grows and produces a bunch it also sends little shoots from the base we call pups. Those pups grow into new trees. It's my understanding though I've never done it myself that you can grow banana plants from seed for the varieties that actually produce seeds. The variety commonly sold in your local supermarket, the Cavendish, does not produce viable seeds.
Good analysis brother you're a smart man!! But your investment analysis left one thing out - you must love what you do or you're just farting in the wind because you will not follow through!! 😉
@@SleepyLizard I'll I'm saying is you can run the numbers on something and while it might be a worthwhile adventure if you don't love it you will never succeed.
And while this might seem obvious to the laymen there is nothing you or the armchair farmers do that is easy but it is a labor of love or we would just invest in mutual funds and not worry about it 😉
@@SleepyLizard my brother is dieing and he brought me an avocado that he ate from the supermarket knowing I have a green thumb I'm working my hardest to show him something for his faith while I know he may not be around to see it bear fruit you have helped me tremendously in my struggle to keep this thing I have never grown alive regardless of the philosophical garble. 😉 Keep up the good work!!
Hi Marco, you can grow from seed and wait until the tree reaches the age of sexual maturity which for avocados is 10+ years, at that point it will begin to flower and fruit.
Depending on your ZIP Code some areas of California are too high and altitude in there for too cold. But if you are in USDA hardiness zone 7a or above you’ll be good
Stop paying your CC debt save your money and buy BTC for the next 10 years. Your debt will be wiped out and now you have thousands of dollars worth of BTC. You might be a millionaire. Now let's get back to trees. Love your work.

we graft cuttings from known varieties onto those seedlings. if I fuse a cutting from a Simmonds variety avocado to a seedling it turns the seedling tree into a Simmonds
@@SleepyLizard could I do this? I also live in south Florida and my mother’s neighbour has a huge avocado tree, I’m not sure if the variety. I have an Utuado avocado that I just planted at my house, utuado is a dwarf variety. If I graft Utuado onto this big root stock, will my grafted tree be a dwarf also?
I never heard of Utuado but there's lots of varieties I don't know about. if you graft Utuado onto any tree the resulting tree will be Utado. Now, if something grows below the graft that will be whatever the tree was before you grafted but everything above the graft will be Utuado. As for if it will be a "dwarf". I'm a bit skeptical about there being dwarf avocado. The ones they claim to be dwarves still grow to 30'x30' on their own and will require annual pruning.
@@SleepyLizard hey, I saw in one of your older videos that you occasionally have grafting classes. I went to your website but I didn’t see anything on there about it. I’m local to South Florida, when is the next time that you have a class?
@@SleepyLizard Pot. Planted in aug last year, grew really strong up till june this year, then the new leafs started getting brown and burned it seemed, eventuałly falling off. It was a heavy drinker up till then, then it got worse and worse till all leafs fell off. Now the top is dead and I guess the whole thing will die. 😐
@@whitemale6227 a few thoughts: first the pots have to have a lot of drainage and you need to use a soil mix that drains well. Also you need to periodically repot to a bigger size pot or your tree becomes root bound. Do the roots appear to be all tangled and turned in on themselves?
@@SleepyLizard I repotted it a couple weeks ago as a last attempt to save it. It wasnt root bound but few white roots, mostly dark or dead. It was placed in a sunny window but now I put it in a eastern window. Its about 2.5 feet high.

Thank you Psway, that is quite a compliment and I appreciate it. The channel's subscriber count has been steadily growing but I'd really love to hit 100k and get one of them RUclips plaques, 😂. I just can't bring myself to say "subscribe and hit like"...I feel like I cheapens my art 🤣

Much value in this vlog
Thank you J, I appreciate your comment. I hope it spreads outside our little avocado community. Have a great day.
i already have a avocado tree planted and oh great news my 2 pineapple plants came in and i planted it a couple days ago yay i'm so excited to watch them grow!
Frosty, I been following your progress and you've made a tremendous

Your video was God sent just at the perfect time. Loved the lesson I gained. I'm about 50 yrs old and it's not about the money it's about finding the peace in my life. I'd love to visit and have a conversation with you ... Have a blessed day and thank you from the bottom of my heart ❤️
Hi Rachel, lemme know when you want to visit. We will have a nice conversation.
@@SleepyLizard great I will do that.Let me check on promotion tomorrow and I'll get back with ya in the next few days ☺️
First i've seen germinating avo seeds in moss. I'm going to give it a go here.
I just happened to have it lying around...most of the time I just keep them in a bag with the skins and parts that don't get eaten.

Another great vid! Got nailed today by a one pound Nesbitt right on the nose from about 6 feet up today while picking🤣. Must have come loose while picking one near it. It hurt but it's all good.
dang, Nesbitts are big. I know because I'm eating one right now as I type this!
Mark, you're welcome anytime. I gotta believe your wife enjoys the food you grow for her even if it costs her some face time.
I brought some to plant grafted polock type here in the Caribbean
awesome, great variety!
I just recently realized if I bought a 3 gallon mango tree and kept it for 3 years, repotting it, my roi is better than stocks if I can sell it.
with mango we just through them in a raised bed and let them sprout then pot them.
Your mango analysis is funny
I love уоыр videos! You do so good. Me maybe one day plant avokadò too.

I think they'll be alright!!!
that doesn't sound too good. I'm sorry to hear it
Hi Tom, I checked your website for the grafted avocado plants and they were out of stock. Please when would you have more in stock?
Yeah we’re all sold out. I’m just planning new seeds now. I’m afraid it’s going to be a few years. Agriculture moves at its own pace

Man come visit me in FRANCE TOMMY BOY we love u broda ...
I hardly ever leave my neighborhood let alone cross the Atlantic 🤣
HI, I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS, I WANT TO BUY SOME AVOCADO SCION , IS THAT POSSIBLE, I LIVE IN DADE COUNTY.
Hi Gabriel, send me a text from the "about" section of my RUclips channel.
Dang that’s crazy I didn’t know anyone would know who I was talking about so cool that you almost got to compete against him
@@SleepyLizard it's a very popular show here in the UK, on TV at 5pm most days.
Can you graft an A and B flowering stock on the same tree?
yep, I call them super-self pollinators
Came for the avocado trees, left with a new brokerage account. lol
That’s funny. Thanks for the laugh
Great video, how often do you water the seeds? I guess I should keep it very wet until it gets going?
When we are in rainy season, they get rained on every day but it’s also very sunny here so they dry quickly. In the dry season I will irrigate every second or third day.
@@SleepyLizard thanks!
Do you have avocado seedlings to graft on to from my tree at this time?
Randy, are you local to south florida?
@@SleepyLizard I'm in Cutler Bay
@@randye8704 ok, get my contact info off my channel and send me a text, remind me who you are and you can come visit the farm. if I don't have any seedlings ready we can round up some seeds and plant them when you're here.
Hello Tom: thank you for the video. May I ask what kind of soil is best for planting avocado seedlings? Thank you so much.
Regular potting soil augmented with six - 6-6 fertilizer
Do you give tours?
Rachelle, yes. In fact I just hosted 81 year old George and his daughter Theresa who are visiting Florida from Mississippi. We had to duck in from the rain from Hurricane Ida a few times but we had fun.
When is the best time of the year for grafting Avocado?
October - February
@@SleepyLizard Thank you sir 🙏 I enjoy watching all of your videos & it's really inspiring, I'm starting Avocado farming therefore I'm looking forward for your assistance in near future 😊

Hello Tom🤗. Jan here in Houston. Did any of your moringa seeds sprout??? If not, then I will send you some that will sprout for sure 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻. I have 11 new trees that are all less than 1 month old and are growing like crazy!
Jan, not only did my Marengo seed sprout. I learned I have a Maringa tree mature growing on my property. Can you believe that?
@@SleepyLizard That’s totally awesome!!!!! Now you need to be the harvester of the leaves to dry them ( in the shade, not in the sun). Your wife can incorporate the dried leaves and use them in soup, in and dish that she chooses. It’s very nutritious 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻. You can sell moringa trees for a nice profit👍🏻🌱🌱🌱
Great video. Do you have young Oro Negro grafted trees available for shipping to Puerto Rico? I just want one or two.
Unfortunately I do not all of my trees are sold out. I’ve just started planting new ones in this vid
The Oro Negro, and the Brogdon will handle call better than other varieties but none of them are frostproof
@@SleepyLizard I'll go search for those, maybe not the same here in Australia, NSW, but its somewhere to begin! Thanks, I'm bingewatching your channel and my juices are flowing lol
@@SleepyLizard damn. Now I gotta go find out what type A and type B means. No doubt you made a video... this is more complicated than I thought
yes I did make a video on A and B...a few in fact. Were you able to find it?
thank you, I'm flattered
what is your potting medium ?
regular potting soil, sand, perlite, and 6-6-6 fertilizer...I didn't add sand to that batch though. I know know my ratios I just mix it on a tarp till if feels right
"One thing im trying to do for me and my family is at the end of it all we dont have memories of being poor and broke" wow

Where do you discuss the seeds in moss technique? I haven’t seen that one.
Hey Bob in different videos here there I talk about Germinating seeds in Damp moss or damp paper towels. I probably should’ve gotten into it in more detail on this video.
@@SleepyLizard You could always do s short one just on that. We love short single topic videos. 😁
I've planted three at home wanna plant 10 what's your advice
Hi Zawadi x, do you have the space for 7 more trees?
@@SleepyLizard yes sir I have space for at least 15
@@zawadix9574 ok then I think it's good to have a mix of early mid and late varieties as well as a mix of flowering type A and flowering type B to maximize pollination. Do you know your USDA hardiness zone? Are you in the US or another country?
Sleepy lizard, can you tell me a way how I can grow a banana tree from a banana thanks.
Thanks sleepy lizard you the man!
Good analysis brother you're a smart man!! But your investment analysis left one thing out - you must love what you do or you're just farting in the wind because you will not follow through!! 😉
That's an interesting discussion.
@@SleepyLizard I'll I'm saying is you can run the numbers on something and while it might be a worthwhile adventure if you don't love it you will never succeed.
And while this might seem obvious to the laymen there is nothing you or the armchair farmers do that is easy but it is a labor of love or we would just invest in mutual funds and not worry about it 😉
Romans 2:6 😉
@@SleepyLizard my brother is dieing and he brought me an avocado that he ate from the supermarket knowing I have a green thumb I'm working my hardest to show him something for his faith while I know he may not be around to see it bear fruit you have helped me tremendously in my struggle to keep this thing I have never grown alive regardless of the philosophical garble. 😉 Keep up the good work!!
What if I plant a avocado seed but have nothing to graft it to then what
Hi Marco, you can grow from seed and wait until the tree reaches the age of sexual maturity which for avocados is 10+ years, at that point it will begin to flower and fruit.
is it possible to deliver some plant in INDIA Kolkata? I was looking for some good plant
it is not possible. sorry about that.

I’m surprised you plant mango seeds other than Turpentine. Isn’t nematode resistance a concern?
Turpentine is exactly what I use for my route stock. But I also like to plan some other varieties and see what I get.
Folks in the north need to be planting Monkey puzzle seeds.
what's that?
Will and oro negro or choquette tree grow well in California?
Depending on your ZIP Code some areas of California are too high and altitude in there for too cold. But if you are in USDA hardiness zone 7a or above you’ll be good

Why do you plant avocado seeds if avocado isn’t true to seed?
we graft cuttings from known varieties onto those seedlings. if I fuse a cutting from a Simmonds variety avocado to a seedling it turns the seedling tree into a Simmonds
@@SleepyLizard Ah, that makes sense. Thanks for letting me know.

It got root rot and is now dying.
I'm so sorry to hear that. was it in the ground or a pot?
@@SleepyLizard
Pot.
@@SleepyLizard
I repotted it a couple weeks ago as a last attempt to save it. It wasnt root bound but few white roots, mostly dark or dead. It was placed in a sunny window but now I put it in a eastern window. Its about 2.5 feet high.
@@whitemale6227 dang, sorry to hear it. time to start over with the knowledge you learned from this go round. good luck!
But avocado trees don’t make the same fruit that it came from.
