Camping In Emergency Survival Tent
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 22 сен 2021
- After the unpleasantness of the last camping trip, I decided to test out an emergency survival tent to see if it would be a good addition to my gear. I just set up in a normal campground (probably to the dismay of the respectable campers). Of course, a storm rolled in right on time, haha, but it told me what I needed to know about camping in these emergency tents.

I feel bad for Steve. He doesn’t have a Steve Wallis video to look forward to every Thursday.
But he is the video, he gets to enjoy Steve Wallis all the time! I'm jealous..
So true
Such a great comment!!
I agree....they're funny vids. He does an awesome job at making it look spontaneous and real. The "mistakes", "blunders" and so called "unplanned weather and events".....that is tough to dish out and make it somewhat convincing. Steve is a pro at this. He's so talented.
He has us!!!!
I get a smile on my face where I hear him talking about his wife in videos. She must have been an amazing woman. I hope you’re doing ok Steve
Steve started that fire like a new Pope had been selected.
Not much you can do about the smoke when you use wet wood. Steve would have to baton the wet wood away from center of the dry wood to attempt to eliminate the smoke altogether. Not everyone carries around with them a blow torch to start their camp fires. Just an observation. Mylar no good. Very flammable. Not ment to be used around open flame. Love you vids man.
He moved like a Priest moves to a new town after some allegations of you know what.

I’m getting hail in my mushrooms 😂
Last year a wildfire consumed half my town and pushed within feet of my property. I was evacuated in an unprepared panic and had to sleep rough for close to a week but somehow even with the trauma of it all knowing I was hunkering down like Steve made me smile. I have spent the post fire time learning about preparedness and have been inspired to enjoy camping and hiking in non emergency settings for the first time in years. Thank you Steve for your positivity and humanity, it truly makes a difference in this world.
Hope you brought number two along
Sorry that happened, but I’m massively impressed by your positive attitude - a lesson for us all. 🙏
I got burned out last year as well. I lived on the freeways for three days, going round and round, looking for places to stay before I could get away from the chaos, but seems you had an even rougher time. I think Steve gives us great ideas for survival. Very glad you are safe now.
@@soniadowney7427 yuck....oh..
You mean step two. Yah!
Oh... yup, that positive attitude rang LOUD in my "not as grateful as I should be" ears. Help me do better Lord! Thanks for your comment.
Steve is all like "sorry this one was kinda lame," and I'm thinking: "Does Steve not realize that these videos are how we hang out with him, like we would if we were crazy neighbors?"
Very true....we enjoy it all.

I’d sit with Steve and watch paint dry
That made me laugh inside my brain
“So that’s clearly blown over and there’s nothing more to worry about.” *pans over to a worsening storm* 😄 You’re an absolute treasure, Steve.

Suggestion: I'm thinking a tarp over one of those picnic tables would make a cool shelter ... complete with shelves. No cordage required, just tuck it under the base of the table.
i think corperal's corner did a tarp over the picnic table one yrs ago. it is actual a very good shelter with a large enough tarp to give 4 side walls pegged into the ground.
Yep...I've also slept on top of one a few times; however, It's usually a good idea to get up early and remove the bedding immediately as then You have a nice place to sit down, and because people kind of freak out if You're still laying on top of it, as though it was unsanitary or something...ha!!
It can be a bit of a drag getting up too early because they are usually nice/flat, and comfortable for a back-sleep.
Far less bugs, etc. to worry about...just not overly modest. 😊
Damn, Step 2 hooks me every time. Your format is absolute FiRe.
I told the Mrs. "Steve is getting hailed on again." She said, "Well, hopefully he's not sleeping in a garbage bag or anything like that today."

Ive seen crepes fail horribly in professional settings, and yet you seem to have nailed it on a camp fire and a sketchy Frypan. Nice job, looks awesome. Love the vids btw. :)
In the autumn of one of the driest years on record, Steve manages to catch 2 decent storms in a row. Must be his magnetic hunker down persona.
The reckless abandon that Steve cracks that first egg with is phenomenal. Then he proceeds to cook crepes in a hail storm. This is the stuff of legends.
His tarp woke up my neighbors.

Steve, when I was in Girl Scouts we used a Tube Tent orange was the only color (they have similar ones in green now). Now setting them up we kept the entrance low 12-18” and the other end was rolled up and rocks placed on it. A poncho was usually draped over needed clothespins to hold in place. Don't know if you still read comments on a video this old. But regarding pancakes/crepes, I would really recommend trying scandinavian style pancakes for a camping meal it's both salty and sweet. It's basically the same as the recipe in this video only with a little sugar in the batter as well as the salt, then roll them up with blueberry jam and bacon inside them. The sweet flavor of the pancake and the blueberry jam together with the saltiness of bacon tastes amazing.
Yeah, you need clips. A Dollar store will sell multiple clips for $1. Also, maybe an air mattress underneath your emergency silver tent. But, when you're in dire need, you proved survival valiently! SUCCESS! Thank you Steve. Love to you and your MRS. 🥰 🏕 💞
Steve recently inspired me to do a small camp.... In my own back yard. Left the phone in the house and cooked with a stick burning camp stove, it rained in the night but I stuck it out like Steve would. It was a great time and I intend to do it again soon. Perhaps this weekend.
Did you take a dump in your backyard?

Man, at this rate I would recommend a military surplus poncho for your kit. You can pack them down quite a bit, use them as a regular poncho, or you can make a basic shelter out of them. Plus, they come in camo.
Sweet Crepes
Ingredients
3/4 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoons salt
1 cup milk (preferably whole)
2 eggs
2 tablespoons sugar
1 tablespoon melted butter, plus more for cooking crepes
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Serving suggestions
Jam
Honey
Sugar
Chocolate hazelnut spread (recommended: Nutella)
Peanut butter
Sliced bananas
Directions
Put the flour and salt and in a large mixing bowl. Gradually whisk in the milk. Whisk in the eggs, 1 at a time, and then whisk in the sugar, melted butter, and vanilla. Cover and let rest in the refrigerator for about 1 hour.
Heat an 8-inch nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Melt a small pat of butter in the pat and swirl around so that it lightly coats the surface.
Add 1/3 cup of the batter and move your wrist in a circular pattern to coat the pan with thin even layer of batter. Cook for about 1 minute or until the first side browns lightly, then flip and cook 45 seconds to 1 minute longer. Remove to a plate and repeat with remaining batter.
Fill with jam, honey, sugar, chocolate hazelnut spread, peanut butter, bananas - anything sweet that you enjoy from your pantry.
Easy Savoury Crepes
Ingredients
1 cup all-purpose flour
¼ teaspoon salt
3 eggs
1 ¼ cups milk, 1% or 2%
2 tablespoons butter, melted
Chicken and Garlic Filling:
5 tablespoons butter
4 cloves garlic, minced
2 teaspoons chopped fresh thyme
2 ½ cups shredded rotisserie chicken
⅓ cup herb and garlic cream cheese
2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
DirectionsInstructions Checklist
Step 1
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
Step 2
Crepes: In a bowl, combine flour and salt. In a separate bowl, whisk together eggs, milk and melted butter. Whisk egg mixture into flour mixture until smooth. Cover and refrigerate for 1 hour. Strain mixture into a clean bowl.
Step 3
Heat a small non-stick skillet or crepe pan over medium heat. Brush pan with some oil.
Step 4
Pour approximately 1/4 cup batter into centre of pan, swirling pan to coat. Cook for about 1 minute or until bottom is a light golden colour. Flip and cook for 30 seconds. Transfer to plate. Repeat with remaining batter. (Make-ahead: Stack crepes between waxed paper, wrap and refrigerate for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 1 month.)
Step 5
Chicken and Garlic Filling: In a skillet, melt 3 tablespoons of the butter over medium high heat with garlic and thyme. Add chicken and cook, stirring for 5 minutes or until heated through. Stir in cream cheese until melted and smooth. Remove from heat and divide the chicken mixture into centre of each crepe and fold over. Place in shallow casserole dish, overlapping slightly. Melt remaining 2 tablespoons butter and drizzle over stuffed crepes.
Step 6
Place in preheated oven for about 10 minutes or until warmed through. Sprinkle with parsley before serving.
Chocolate and Strawberry Filling:
4 ounces chopped milk chocolate, semi sweet or bittersweet chocolate
2 cups fresh strawberries, quartered
1/2 teaspoon icing sugar
Ground cinnamon (optional)
Whipped cream (optional)
Sprinkle chocolate along centre of each crepe and top with strawberries. Roll up and place in shallow casserole dish.
Place in preheated 350 degrees F (180 degrees C) oven for about 10 minutes or until warmed through and chocolate is melted.
Dust with icing sugar and cinnamon, if using, and dollop with whipped cream, if desired
before serving.
Variation: Garlic Shrimp Filling:
5 tablespoons butter
4 cloves garlic, minced
2 teaspoons fresh thyme, chopped, or 3/4 teaspoon dried thyme leaves
1 pound small shrimp, thawed
2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
In a skillet, melt butter over medium high heat with garlic and thyme. Add shrimp. Cook, stirring for 5 minutes or until heated through. Remove from heat and divide the shrimp mixture into centre of each crepe and fold over. Place in a shallow casserole dish, overlapping slightly. Bake at 350 degrees F (180 degrees C) for about 10 minutes or until warmed through. Sprinkle with parsley before serving.
Tips:
You can substitute 3 cups frozen sliced strawberries, thawed, for the fresh strawberries.
3/4 teaspoon dried thyme leaves may be substituted for 2 teaspoons fresh thyme.

It is for two people. Steve your mattress does NOT go IN your sleeping bag. I teach survival as a side job. A tiny bit of duct tape at each end securing the tent to the line helps. Partially closing the end with small steel binder clips also help. Combine this tent with an SOL ESCAPE BIVY will keep you dry and warm. Put your sleeping in the bivy with your matress underneath.

When we were kids, my mom used to make homemade peach jam crepes just like what you are making but instead made them super sweet by using her really thick peach jam as the spread! When mom wasn't looking dad always added a shot of Asbach Uralt brandy to the peach jam to REALLY spice up the crepes! We ate those "Brandy-spiced" sweet crepes with GUSTO and being big hungry teens me and my brother could polish off four of them EACH with ease!
Great Times!
Another option, is to to add some spicy German or Polish sausage cut into chunks along with shredded Swiss or even a Spicy Cheese and some mushrooms and diced onions!
I am just salivating at those memories right now and at 2:45 am just might go make some crepes RIGHT NOW !!!

You’re like the Bob Ross of sleeping in a mylar Toblerone casing.
Sounds like something a serial killer would say, but ok. 👍

LOL @ Toberone casing! :D Thanks for the laugh, friend!
Keep the survival blanket in your pack: use for ground cover or as a blanket inside your sleeping bag for extra warmth. It might come in handy in winter camping.
Yeah I was thinking something similar. It could be used in a real tent with your sleeping bag. You could sew one end shut and then put your sleeping bag inside of it, then get in. It would serve as a thermal barrier, keeping cold out and heat in and because you'd be in a regular tent (even if a small one), you wouldn't have to worry about moisture so much.
I mean that's it's basic purpose. As a backup it fantastically suits its purpose. If you're exposed and have no windbreak or cover you're fucked. It's an emergency for a reason haha
For survival yes, but while cycling/stealth camping the west coast in California, i lost my sleeping bag and used one of those for warmth in the cold "winter" nights. I would wake up all damp in the morning..
D'Souza I Keep 3to 5 emergency blankets in my car, but with some duct tape I now have 2 tens and a blanket for 8n my sleeping bag! Great suggestion!
@@visnuexe I too keep 4 emergency blankets in my vehicles. I've also given them as gifts to family. My use case was sliding off the road in a blizzard or getting stuck on a closed highway. For that use case the car is the moisture and wind break so just need a way to conserve body heat.

I'm really grateful for the fact that you are teaching your audience how to survive a tricky situation in life like homelessness. This makes your channel a really valuable asset.
When i was younger, my dad would kick me out and lock the doors. I slept under bridges, park benches. ... the worst , was when it was raining I tried to sleep under a tree and all I had was a coat and a few shopping bags. I woke up cold, and soaking wet with my face in a puddle of water.
After watching Steve, I want to try stealth camping. Looks fun.
For the life of me I can't understand why someone would vote this adventure down. It was a great show of how to survive. The curmudgeons of the world just don't get it. Had fun watching you sleep in a tinfoil tent. Keep driving on there Steve.
In my experience, there are just trolls who go around voting down videos that get recommended to them. They get their jollies from doing that.

That bottle of Step 2 is probably the best camping whisky there is. Props to your wife for knowing her stuff. 👏
How about you take a stealthy tarp, and rubber cement a space blanket to the underside? Best of both worlds: lightweight, quieter, stealthier, and should hold up well against multiple foldings & small tears shouldn't spread. Anyways, love your work. Camping with Steve is NEVER lame!
“Looking for something between this and a tarp” What you are looking for is a poncho. Serves as rain gear, ground tarp, or a variety of tent shelters. Super versatile.
Got to use my "arcturus" poncho , ground cover , tarp recently , it was great 👍 ... For an inexpensive piece if gear ..... We did a 4 day camp ,hike , kayak fishing trip . Made it an eight min YT vid ......
I never thought I'd hear, "I'm getting hail in my mushrooms." With all the cooking I've done, I've never had that situation. As always, loved the video. Also, "emergency hotdogs." LOL
Hey this is Vlad. I used to be a chef for a crepe place. We usually added a little bit of beer to the batter to make the crepes a little more fluffy and savoury from the carbonation. Seeing as you often have it handy i would 10/10 recommend.
I slept in something similar on a camping trip to my friends island. Same concept quick and easy A-Frame tent except mine wasn't mylar. You can close the entrances by folding it shut and placing rocks, or log across it which is what I did, and I had no problem with water getting inside. Mylar is a blessing, and a curse. Blessing because it does keep you warm a curse because its noisy as hell.
Steve didn't look at all crazy when cooking his meal. I bet Gordon Ramsey never said "I'm getting hail in my mushrooms".
But he has probably said I'm getting hell in my mushrooms. Fire 🍄
Gordon probably said, “bloody hell, there’s hail in my mushrooms!” 😂
One thing that Steve has never been shy about and that's getting the campfire going in the shortest time possible.
I use a rainfly from a small tent. Works great, no folding, just stuffing back in bag. Takes little room. Very water resistant. THIS is between a tarp and a mylar survival shelter. Good Luck..🥃
You can get a sheet of similar foil and tape it over the ends. You can also set up the tent in your girlfriends lounge, put colour changing LEDs and a duvet inside and take mind-slightly-altering substances that make you feel like you're in an ice cave.
Steve has such an even keel nonchalant voice. Most of us would have been pulling our hair out if we had brought our camping gear, set up our tent and started on the meal, then it rained.
But not Steve. He just pulls on a garbage bag or whatever he has handy and keeps right on with the itinerary in his happy go lucky voice, no matter what the circumstances. I've seen him do it in bear country, with all sorts of challenges with his house, having film stolen, on down the line. He takes all of the fear out of what would upset most of us, making it seem like just another day in the park. 😎
Examples: "Better move, I'm getting hail in my mushrooms."
"Obviously, there's going to be water in the structure... Let's get to bed and deal with these problems in the morning." 😄
I just left a comment saying something similar. Watching Steve the last year or so and following his lead has helped me learn to just take a breath every now and then and ask myself is this worth blowing up and ruing a day over

Spending the night in a pop tart wrapper, props to you good sir! Another great camping adventure!
THE MUSTARD BEFORE THE KETCHUP??!!! I used to question your sanity, Steve. It's no longer a question.
Awwww....man....heard the sound of Alberta hail hitting the pan and cringed (been there. done that). Absolutely shocked that the shelter survived as well as it did. 🎉
Same company also makes both an emergency bivy and a tarp with a mylar liner. In any case, a blister pack of "binder" clips would be a useful edition.
I can only imagine using one of those shelters in the deep woods of Northern Manitoba, all bundled up in my sleeping bag, only to be dragged away by bigfoot in the middle of the night, thinking I was an offered burrito in foil wrap. The worst part is, I wouldn't even notice a thing, as I tend to be a deep sleeper out in the wilderness. lol.
@Subtle water Wow that was fucking rude
Your best bet for heavy rain is to get a tent that is made for it. Clostnature Lightweight Backpacking Tent - 3 Season Ultralight Waterproof Camping Tent is like $80 and weights 5.5 pounds. To get something lighter will require spending way too much extra.
I understand saving money, I would have recommended the brand “Dont Die In the Woods” blanket, and survival shelter. Their have both stealthy and survival style. Durable for multiple uses. Awesome vid though and thanks.
A genuine original and one of the most entertaining and likeable people on RUclips.
We called those tube tents when I was a Boy Scout. They're light and help keep the rain off, but they're not great in wind because they're open on both ends. We found the best way to hang one was to put the windward end up against a rock, big tree, or other windbreak. Also, you can make loops in your ridge line to tie around a pebble poked into a dimple in the plastic to keep the ends from sliding down toward the middle of the tent. (Like this: ruclips.net/video/KFqPw-J2S00/видео.html ) You can also do that if you need to tie out the sides to keep the bottom flat. That way you don't have to poke a hole in the plastic.
Martha Stewart “Simple Crepes” recipe works well, can’t mess them up. The first crepe is usually a trial run,. Put about a 1/3 of a cup +/- of batter in the pan and twirl it to cover the bottom of the pan. You can add a tiny bit to fill in holes if needed. Bon appétit!
I remember this video....I'm going into my bug out place deep into the wilderness, it's a long hard hike, I am trying to find a better way of getting supply's to it. I will be gone for 3 days, no cell service, I am taking very little with me. I am taking a tube tent and just a few other things. Have a good one Steve.
You could connect two of those tents together with a little overlap and make a long survival tunnel, that might help keep the weather out. Nice job with the crepe!
Also survival tunnel sounds sweet
Id recommend a "siltarp". They're unfortunately a little pricey, MEC has a good one in several sizes. Although pricey, they fold down easily to almost nothing, very light, and Ive had mine about 12 years. Used all throughout the year and its still completely water tight, and just as effective as the day I bought it. Love your show Steve!!
Really you need a good emergency Tarp!
I've used a siltarp for years. They are tougher than they look. But last time I looked , MEC doesn;t sell them now. They have a substitute but I find an $10 Cdn 8x10 camo tarp from Cabelas to be light enough and tougher.
Yes! I have a RAB Siltarp... weighs in at one pound very compact in it's stuffsack and you can make a tent out of it
@@barrybogart5436 Well, right you are! im shocked I didn't see them online anymore! and honestly disappointed, its such a great product and yes, very tough. BUT, ill thank you for your suggestion. I loooove your videos Steve. I enjoy a step two while watching your adventures every night before I hit the hay.
I didn't find this video lame at all. In fact, I really enjoyed it. I enjoy all of your content, whatever it is. I got a chuckle thinking of what the other campers must have thought of your emergency tent. Looking forward to the stealth next week and the upcoming river trip in your new boat.
My favorite part of Steve having a fire is when he puts it out and sets up the shot like he's peeing on it and then moves to reveal he isn't. And you're left thinking... "Did he do that on purpose?"
And then you realize, "It's Steve. OF COURSE he did that on purpose."
I appreciate your unmeasured ingredient/servings with your meals, the ol' eye ball does a great job.
I bought one of those once, not to use as a tent. It was unexpectedly cold and I couldn't get any sleep, even with an air mattress. I bought one of these emergency reflective tent/ blanket things and put it over me - nothing. Next night I put it UNDER me and it reflected all my body heat back up and I was toasty warm. I will definitely keep one of those bad boys in my kit - its cheap, light, and takes up no space, and it works
Steve is just one of the most wholesome, nicest guys on RUclips. Coming to this channel is always a nice escape!
Thanks so much John!!
He's like the Mr. Rogers of Camping.
@@MarkHolmberg He is, it's relaxing to just kick back and watch a Steve video.
Tip for the mushrooms: fry them first on a dry pan (no water, snow or hail or anything) - water will bleed out. As the mushrooms dry up, add butter or whatever fat you are using, which they will happily absorb.
Like chef John says. Make them wet, then make them dry, then make them wet again!
Fat in the pan first helps spread the heat around and get the entire mushroom expressing liquid and promote browning.
How many does it take ? 😊
1-2-4-8 recipe for crepes: 100 grams of butter, two eggs, 4 desilitres of wheat flour, 8 desilitres of milk. Plus some salt to taste (amount depends how much salt is in the butter) and 1teaspoon baking powder. Just whisk everything together, add melted butter and baking powder last. Let sit for an hour at least and you're good to go frying some tasty crepes. Sweet crepes with strawberry jam and whipped cream are awesome.
Steve. A Suggestion. Become a pseudo 'Bird Watcher' ! Hang small birder binoculars on you, and maybe a visible pocket bird guide and be perceived as bird geek looking to video ever present birds,,, year round. A stealthy cover story..... It gives you likely cover, if prying eyes notice you entering or exiting a stealthy spot. Just a suggestion.
As a wilderness interpretive guide, I really enjoy your adventures. It's a pleasant change from being schooled by "experts" and your experiences are so real to life. Camp on dude.
Steve, I don't think I can express to you how much I needed your videos over the past year plus. I found you cause of the pandemic and you've honestly helped me get through. Thanks for all the effort you put into this and I wish you continued success.
Aaaah a break from the insanity, thanks Steve
One of those crinkle survival tarps saved my life one night on an outing, Im a very strong advocate for this type of equipment in your vehicles. It was so cold and it was embarrassing how loud my teeth chattered, but I still typed this out because a young man packed one in his bag.
They make a heavy duty space blanket tarp with grommets in it. Some of them are orange, but your can find them in green. I keep one in my day pack for backpacking for emergencies. $20 on amazon here in America. They fold up fairly easily. I keep mine on the same side as my back in the pack, kind of adds a bit of padding and makes the pack stiffer. If you've got a rubber mallet, you might try pounding the your skillet flat. Savory crepes: steak and cheese with onions, mushrooms, peppers like a Philly cheese steak. You can also do a chicken parmesan with chicken, cheese, tomato sauce. Gyro ingredients are also awesome in a crepe. You can stick just about anything in a crepe. Smooth peanut butter with nutella and strawberries is one of the best sweet crepes you can eat. Maple syrup with just about any fruit would probably be awesome.
