I get chills she when she sings "CHANGE WILL COME" so desperately, you can hear the ache in her voice. I think "God Help The Outcasts," was the right choice for this scene, but I'm so glad the musical places this beautiful song right when Esmeralda is led to be burned at the stake, hurting but defiant. This music is just amazing.

the main melody of Someday is the chant melody from the very beginning of the movie before The Bells of Notre Dame! that's pretty cool!
    the lyrics to that are:
Olim, olim, Deus accelere (Someday, someday, God speed)
Hoc sæculum splendium (This bright millenium)
Accelere fiat venire olim (Let it come someday)

"I don't know if you can hear me
    Or if you're even there
I don't know if you would listen
    To a gypsy's prayer
In your house of peace and beauty
I don't know what to say
Except to ask that peace and beauty may come to us out there someday
    Someday
    When we are wiser
    When the world's older
    When we have learned
I pray someday we may yet live
    To live and let live
    Someday
    Life will be fairer,
    Need will be rarer,
    Greed will not pay
    God speed
    This bright millennium
    On its way
    Let it come
    Someday
    Someday
My fight will be won then,
We'll stand in the sun then
    That bright afternoon
    Till then, on days
    When the sun is gone
    I'll hang on
    Wish upon the moon
    Change will come
    One day, someday, soon"

For this moment, 'God Help the Outcast' was most definitely the better choice. 'Someday' would have been better suited if they animated a scene of Esmeralda locked up and/or being led to her death; just as it was beautifully executed in the Berlin stage production of THBoND
I really hope they bring the musical to Broadway in the near future!

  • @iluvcheezitsheyhey
    @iluvcheezitsheyhey 16 лет назад +26

This is a beautiful song, but I do think God Help the Outcasts fit better in the cathedral, whereas Someday would have been perfect if they had a scene in the film where she sings in the dungeon. Or if she sang it while on top of the cathedral with Quasi just before they climb down. I like this version MUCH better than one on the soundtrack (90's pop music.....eeeeeew).

i think 'someday' is more tragically heartfelt... like my heart tugged at her plea
but i also think they were right to keep 'God help the outcasts' b/c it sounded more like a prayer and it was more powerful and it just FIT u no? lol i couldnt imagine anything else but that being there..
    both songs are absolutely beautiful

It's beautiful, but too "grand" for what the producers were aiming.
However, as someone else has pointed out, this could have been included if they had been just that bit more faithful to the original source material.
Imagine her singing this in her cell as she awaits her burning, as dusk turns to night and with the moon rising.

    • @janeadams7108

Jane Adams Yeah, I think it would've worked if they added at least half an hour more plot to the movie. Though their reason for ultimately cutting it is understandable ("too grand, too early in the film").

this song is truly beautiful and powerful!!! I too would have loved to see its finished version. if only they finished all 3 deleted songs, the storyboards are really beautiful, but a finished version would have been priceless. The orchestration exactly in the beginning where she says "in your house of peace and beauty" really gave me goosebumps!! the message of the song is truly powerful. 2 thumbs up to Alan Menken and the artists!

I personally feel that Someday has a better progression and fits the set up better. It also helps that it isn't completely out of character like the movie version of God help the Outcasts is. Not using Someday I think was the biggest mistake they made in the development of this movie.

  • @shadetail
    @shadetail 11 лет назад +3

I actually feel like this fits the situation better. She isnt the type of character to feel helpless. This song shows that she is always looking towards a brighter future for those who have suffered so much. God help the outcasts sounds more like she is giving up the fight herself and putting in hope that a supernatural figure will fix it. In the movie it doesn't even reach the part of the sound that shows her bitterness towards a god if one exists.God help the outcasts was very out of character.

I do prefer "God Help the Outcasts", but seeing this makes me like "Someday" more. It didn't seem to fit at all with the pop version even though I like All-4-One.
