I don't know, in a film that already had The Bells of Notre Dame and Hellfire, this really does feel like a worthy big showstopper.
As is, the soundtrack is already Disney's heaviest and most hard-hitting. Adding Someday to that I feel would've really put it into a field of its own.

When I watched the stage recording of this song, the part that got me was when they sang "Let it come someday" together for the first time. Phoebus puts his hand on Esmeralda's face and she hold it and cries. It's wild to see her break down while trying to stay strong. She knows she is going to die and has finally found someone that will understand her and be with her until the end. Both Quasi and Frollo were obsessed with her (Quasi became enamoured with her after she was the first person to genuinely show kindness to him and he saw her as pure and angelic, Frollo is ovb) but Phoebus was the only one to treat her as an equal and love her truly. uggghhhh I love this song.

What breaks my heart is that this is a prayer of a character in the medieval dark ages, about the 1300's. If you look around, and I mean REALLY look around, not much has changed, has it?

As an historian, what breaks my heart is that people still think that Medieval era was a dark age. It was not darker than any other era, and, as you say it, every period has its flaws. Please remember that this song does not reflect the accuracy of medieval era: it's a song from a musical, inspired by a movie, inspired by a romantic novel set in 1482 (and not the 1300s, which was a completely different period). We're far from historical accuracy here.
I hope this doesn't seem critical. What I mean is that it's perfectly okay to enjoy this musical, as long as one keeps in mind that it is not a documentary about 1482 Paris.

True, we must fight, but we need to remember it's a never-ending battle. As long as there is humanity, there will always be change, for better or worse. Though it's easy to think in absolutes, it's not realistic. We'll never have complete, everlasting world peace, just as we will never have complete, everlasting worldwide suffering. But we can have peace in one place at a time if we work hard enough. Unfortunately, those who seek to destroy that peace will always return to tear it down, but if we lose hope, sit by and let them do it, then the cycle, which must continue, will not continue.
All we can do is our best. We will win, and then we will lose, but when we lose one fight, we can win the next. Such is the nature of the world, till all is dust.
      ....

While I sympathize with your intentions this song does not really apply to the lost of a building. It is about the suffering of people and the injustices faces by the lesser. The lost of a building that has become more of a tourist destination does not really apply to this song. I enjoyed seeing Notre Dame but this song is about something more than just a building.

    ESMERALDA
    I used to believe
In the days I was naive
    That I'd live to see
    A day of justice dawn
    And though I will die
    Long before that morning comes
    I'll die while believing still
It will come when I am gone
    Someday
    When we are wiser
    When the world's older
    When we have learned
    I pray
    Someday we may yet live
    To live and let live
    ESMERALDA / PHOEBUS
    Someday
    Life will be fairer
    Need will be rarer
    Greed will not pay
    Godspeed
    This bright millennium
    On its way
    Let it come someday
    CHORUS
    Someday
    When we are wiser
    When the world's older
    When we have learned
    I pray
    Someday we may yet live
    To live and let live
    ESMERALDA
    There are some days
    Black and bitter
It seems we haven't got a prayer
    PHOEBUS
But a prayer for something better
    PHOEBUS / ESMERALDA
Is the one thing we all share
    CHORUS
    We all share
    We all share
    ALL
    We all share...
    Someday
Our fight will be one then
We'll stand in the sun then
    That bright afternoon
    Till then
On days when the sun is gone
    Hope lives on
    Wish upon the moon
    Change will come
    PHOEBUS
    One day...
    CHORUS
    Someday...
    ESMERALDA
    Soon

After reading the book, I don't think Victor Hugo could have cared less about the gypsies. He called the Court of Miracles a hornet's nest and seemed to be under the impression that they were all criminals and child-stealers. In fact he was closer to Disney's characterization of Claude.

    • @HimynameisAverie
      @HimynameisAverie 5 лет назад +14

@@thegizzardofmars7453 Yeah, nobody can really argue that Hugo had some messed up views. He doesn't even seem to care all that much about the characters he writes - they're just props to illustrate his philosophy. But I do agree with OP, because his whole philosophy is basically that the world sucks, but someday it'll be better. And that hope in a future utopia is what this whole song is about, ya know? :)
