whoever didnot sing or attended should thank the savior. We are the world was mostly "intended" to assist the famine occurring in Ethiopia. But what many do not know to date would be the funds collected were handed to the then rebel fighters in Ethiopia by the name Tigray People Libration Front or TPLF. TPLF was later able to overthrow the then dictatorial government and made to the seats but became the worst nightmare for the country by imposing divide and rule system based on ethnicity and paving the way for current day civil war and genocide in the country. TPLF set up a non profit by claiming the famine that the world talked about was occurring in the region that they wanted to librate. Then received the money from we are the world for the war and overthrown the then government(DERG). Later TPLF acknowledged Bob Geldof's efforts for collaborating with them and for Bono honorary citizenship of Ethiopia was awarded. The only thing that "we are the world" did for Ethiopia was making the name of the country to Oxford Dictionary as an example for famine. Get enlightened that the concert was corrupt!

I've often speculated on what an alternate "We Are the World" group would look like. You have a methodology for picking your top 10 which is as good as any, but here are some other voices that, though they might not have had chart hits at that exact time, would have still been very recognizable to the general public in that time period. (Note, this list is exclusively American, and did not appear on the "We Are the World" record). Also, no particular order.
    1) Dolly Parton. Quite surprising they got Kenny Rogers and didn't get Dolly.
    2) Linda Ronstadt. She was doing musical theater at the time, but her massive 70s output was still being played.
    3) Donna Summer. The "Queen of Disco" had some staying power after disco died.
    4) Irene Cara. Two huge movie soundtrack hits, powerful voice.
    5) Aretha Franklin. Speaking of powerful voices, the Queen of Soul was in a bit of down period chart-wise, but that would soon change, and she was already very iconic.
    6) Barbra Streisand. Highly acclaimed as both a singer and an actress.
    7) Cher. Kind of in between career peaks, but a very recognizable voice.
    8) Ann Wilson. Powerful lead vocalist with Heart.
    9) Pat Benatar. Rock goddess, high profile on MTV.
    10) Joan Jett. Ditto
    11) Johnny Cash. Kind of a down period in his career, but iconic voice.
    12) Barry White. Different genre, but another deep bass.
    13) Neil Diamond. Instantly recognizable.
    14) Mike Love. Heck, bring the whole group, nobody did vocal harmonies like the Beach Boys.
    15) Bob Seger. Great heartland rock voice.
    16) Lou Gramm. While Steve Perry had the best arena rock frontman voice, the Foreigner lead singer was a close second.
    17) Kevin Cronin. REO Speedwagon was huge at the time.
    18) Frank Sinatra. Probably the most iconic singer of all-time, this really isn't his crowd, but he might have been talked into it if...
    19) Sammy Davis Jr. were also involved.
    20) Little Richard. Could have filled the Michael Jackson role vocally, kind of set the blueprint for many of the future pop stars to follow both vocally and image wise.

With a few exceptions, the artists who participated in WATW enjoyed chart success and heavy rotation on radio and MTV during the year leading up to the recording. For those reasons, they were invited or even nominated to the AMAs, which helped the vast majority of them meet in the same place, at the same time, and with all expenses paid. It wasn't just a matter of "greatness", it was also a matter of availability, logistics, and budget. But, certainly, many of those artists you mention deserved to be invited.

Little Richard was a frequent game show guest in that time period, so he was still very much in the public eye, which is why I picked him. A couple more names I thought of after I'd already posted (besides Patti LaBelle, mentioned above): James Brown and Carly Simon. Roy Orbison would have been great, but he wasn't too prolific at that time (the Traveling Wilburys revived him before his sad passing). Tom Petty could have been this group's answer to Bob Dylan. The Beach Boys were likely still in mourning for Dennis Wilson at this point, and Brian was at the mercy of Eugene Landy, so they were likely a no-go.
I heard a story about Barry Manilow actually wanting to get involved, but they told him “the poor and needy aren’t THAT poor and needy!“
Jennifer Warnes was most likely laying down vocal tracks to the theme to that Kirk Cameron show that Dusty Springfield also covered.
Christopher Cross could have easily helped become part of the solution by sharing his second and third helpings with those who cannot even afford first helpings.

Lionel Ritchie said that they considered Madonn. It was either her or Cyndi Lauper as the choice to cover the female pop star fanbase market. Ultimately, executive Ken Kragen decided on Cyndi Lauper. Quincy Jones supported this decision as they both believed Cyndi would be able to deliver a more dynamic sound on the limited lines in the song they had allocated the 'pop girl' slot to. It was nothing personal. Lionel also later went on record saying he regrets that decision saying they should have invited them both instead of thinking it should be only one or the other.

It was put together in just a few weeks and many artists wanted in. There were only so many that could be accommodated. Also, artists who had a huge ego problem were not invited such as Prince. The last song on the charts for The Blues Brothers was in 1981 (John Belushi passed away). LaToya Jackson got in simply because she was MJ's sister. With that criteria I'm not sure Steve Perry made the cut because Journey's album Frontiers came out in Feb. 1983. Paul Simon was in the midst of a commercial funk - his last album from 1983 was a disaster. I'm also guessing that even if Stevie Wonder had no hits on the charts there was no way MJ, Lionel and Quincy Jones were NOT going to have him on the record (same with Diana Ross nor the entire Jackson Family). I'm not sure Bette Midler met the criteria either (based on the time period given). Why Madonna wasn't invited? And why Lionel didn't want to get into details about that? It was because Ken Kragen(who was one of the organizers of "We Are the World" and was Lionel Richie & Kenny Rogers manager) thought Madonna was going to be a flash in the pan. So Kragen told Madonna that her services wasn't needed. Well Ken was dead wrong about Madonna being a flash in the pan. Also it was foul that he did that to her. It's a charity record, she didn't need to do a solo, let her sing the chorus with the rest of the group. Funny thing is LaToya Jackson participated in this. Latoya Jackson? Come on now. Bad decision on Kragen's part.

Kragen was also the reason for Kim Carnes being there. She hadnt had a hit since "Bette Davis Eyes" yet she was not only invited but got a lead vocal.

Madonna was definitely the biggest snub. If they would have wanted her they could have got her, it wasn’t that hard and she was known even then for being charitable with her work on AiDS, which was what this song was raising funds for. In fact, Madonna was probably the biggest star who was current at the time to support AIDS charities way before it was socially acceptable to do so. The others were Elton John, Elizabeth Taylor, Doris Day whose careers had already peaked and therefore had less to lose, and eventually Diana who certainly made an impact. To shut out Madonna was petty and shortsighted, not only because she was already a huge star but also because she was a known AIDS activist. They even invited Prince who it’s known had a huge beef with MJ. Whats delicious about this is Madonna became way more famous and successful than almost everyone involved. She got the last laugh, and honestly, aside from the historic moment of all these stars together, the song is barely remembered because honestly, it was trash and a bad rip off of Do They Know It’s Christmas.

I don't disagree with the idea that Madonna was a huge snub, but this project wasn't for AIDS, it was for famine in Ethiopia. "That's What Friends Are For." with Dionne Warwick, Stevie Wonder, Elton John, and Gladys Knight, was for AIDS.

What they say about Prince here was true. They did get Sheila E. I dont think Prince would have fit in with all that anyway. The song he contributed was just okay. It would have been fun if his solo track gave we r the world a run for its money, on the charts. I also read this was the night he recorded Erotic City....Sheila's vocals came latter.
