Karen Carpenter. Look into what she accomplished in her short life. There are great singers and legendary singers and then there is Karen Carpenter. Nobody ever has or will sound like her. She was a female Sinatra in that she could covey any emotion needed to make the song a masterpiece!

I think an honorable mention should be Sister Rosetta Tharpe. I've recently learned about her and my goodness was that woman a true pioneer. First person to ever sell out a venue in 1950. The TRUE pioneer of Rock & Roll. Big stars like Elvis, Chuck and Aretha all talked highly about her and had respect for her. She might not have 20 #1s or sold millions of copies but she paved the way for others.

Great singers was around since the early 30's because Jim Reeves was a master singer he's one of the greatest of all time.
In the 50's my mother listened to Jim Reves Patsy Cline, Hank Williams Sr. & Ray Charles she had pretty great taste I would say. Got me listening a lot to Ray and gave me an appreciation for R&B Fats, Stevie, Smokey and just loved Sam Cook. later Otis and Marvin and Jackie Wilson.

I recently read that Dolly heard her song on the radio and didn't know her music company let Whitney record it. However, she was gobsmacked at the rendition. Like all of us were! Whitney was so talented and blessed with the most beautiful face, it is incredible that she had such a gorgeous receptacle to glorify her delivery, she was truly an Angel on earth.

Elvis hag it all.Talent, voice, humble and generous soul. charisma, presence, looks,,smile, humor, and entertainer. He was a good American son who loved and took care of his parents, a good American patriot who loved his country and served his country dutifully.He loved his fans and treated them respectfully' I also believed he loved his God and savoir but fell short of God's glory just like every other human. The blacks didn't like him to be called the king of rock, but to his white fans, he was. His white fans are the ones who made him famous and he in turn made their music famous to us. He could take anybody's song and put his charm on it and make it more popular. He knew he had been given so much from God and knew he wouldn't be anywhere without God and his fans and wanted his fans to have the best of him. He will always be number one.
what beeing a "good amercain" has to do with talent or beeing the best singer.... for me should be freddy mercury or daniel balavoine :P

@lynwhittaker Yes i remember also hearing about that statement on the radio from a music journalist who was also a radio music paper publisher and later also worked for Virgin records. BTW it was also refered that Elvis wasn't excactly very fond of The Beatles for some reason.
