For me, Madonna should be the number one (1) bcos she's the best-selling female music artist of all time. How could she sell her music if she's not the best singer.
When you watch this, you realize how many singers could have been up there. I think this review was based more on star power than voice. If it was sheer voice it would be Karen Carpenter or Whitney Houston at the top. Madonna would not even be mentioned. P.S. Linda Ronstadt would be top 5.
Madonna is an icon but not because of her voice and I think she’d admit that. She worked on her voice for years but it was her personality, her dance moves and her willingness to push the boundaries of our values in America that make her a star. She was always controversial and I loved that. But no she does not belong here…at all.
Dionne Warwick is #2 in charted hits during rock era, only Aretha had more, yet not even an honorable mention? So many others from Stevie Nicks, Pat B, and more. No other singer in American history had been as successful across so many genres as Linda Ronstadt, who to this day, has the top selling non English language album ever. Where’s Dolly Parton too?
Kelly Clarkson 💝🎶🎶🎶🎶 superb vocalist, any genre, ability like no other to connect to a lyric, 🥰….. after 20 years, she just gets better and better, can’t wait till she gets the recognition she so deserves!!
Are these the best singers or those who made the most money? I would find it difficult to list only ten of the best, but I would have to drop Madonna. I enjoyed her music in the 80s and 90s, but not after that. I believe she is more of a top entertainer. I think I also disagree with the places you have given some of the ladies. For example, you placed Madonna but put Mariah in 10th place?
She writes her own songs, produces them, plays instruments and has outsold them all both in albums and concert tickets. They are all great but mostly singers, while Madonna is the whole artistic package.

@@lolalolita2011 Madonna is a great PREFORMER not a great singer. Lady Gaga is a great singer. Anne Wilson is a fantastic singer and a rocker. Judy Garland was the GOAT!
I like Madonna and am a fan. However, voice is not her strength. She is a performer and makes great songs but not a singer like Whitney, Aretha, Ella, Celine, Barbara and Mariah.
No she doesn't have the highest octave range, but neither do a lot of singers. But she has proven for over four decades that she has a great voice and has even sung two songs at the Oscars that won best original song. As well as being the best selling female music recording artist in history still. Deal with it.
Though I accept that Madonna is successful as a singer, great is a quality that I do not associate with her voice, whether her early songs like "Holiday" or her more recent songs. Her cover of "American Pie" was not that appealing and "Beautiful Stranger" ranks as one of the more ridiculous songs in her catalogue. I used to like "La Isla Bonita" but it was proven to me that even that song can "achieve" the status of "overplayed".
@@jamesr2164 Octave range??? Live, she can't hit the note she's looking for in any range. Madonna relies on great sound engineering in the studio and lip syncs any part of live performance that sounds on key. She put on a good show, but good singer? She never was.
@@jamesr2164Bullshit. This is a list of best SINGERS. Madonna neither can sing nor has a good voice. She can give good production show but this is nor a list of best shoes but the list of best SINGERS
She may be a great singer but shes not the greatest singer in history like whitney . But Whitney or Celine Dion hasn't had the cultural movement that Madonna has had. Madonna is a force of nature they will be talking about her 100 years from now.
Karen Carpenter is the female singer with the most beautiful voice ever. #1 Karen Carpenter #2 Whitney Houston #3 Barbra Streisand #4 Celine Dion #5 Linda Ronstadt #6 Mariah Carey #7 Madonna #8 Adele
Sorry but Madonna doesn't deserve a spot on this list, She sings false live for real 🙈 What about Randy Crawford, Jennifer Hudson, Christina Aguilera and Diana Ross ??🫤
@@waltmyers6361 Performances are suspect, unless one can be certain that lip syncing is not occurring. Maybe Madonna can sing and dance, without lip syncing, however the important issue here is singing. Does she sing well? Does she emote and enunciate well? I agree, Karen Carpenter should be at the top of the list, as she had more control than any of the others and had the most beautiful voice that could sing absolutely anything!
@@abigailcoffman7207 My sentiment, exactly! I am not crazy about everything that Barbra Streisand has done, but I fully appreciate her talent and music! Madonna is just a disgraceful, disgusting blemish upon the music industry.

Barabar Streisand hands down...in my opinion is #1. For anyone who has not hear "A Woman in Love" i recommend you do. Those vocals are absolutely amazing.
I don't care who's the second or least,...but where is Karen Carpenter?she must be in #1 spot...your list of singers are mostly they used and expand their vocal cord just to try to hit high note, but Karen Carpenter is truly the example of great and high class singer...no need to sing high note, because she is the "VOICE OF AN ANGEL",...when she start to sing, you are force to listen...gone to soon but bever forgotten...and i'm pretty sured that if she still alive today, she still the #1 singer of this earth...named KAREN ANNE "ANGEL"CARPENTER.
I agree that she had quite the voice that maybe the songs never fully exploited, however she isn't in my top 5 favourite females. I don't mean that as knock against her, it is just that music is so personal to me that who I enjoy or love isn't necessarily dependent on any one characteristic. I love Tanya Tucker, Selena Quintanilla Perez, Jewel Kilcher, Susanna Hoffs, Tiffany, Stevie Nicks, Lee Aaron, The Judds, Martina McBride and others.
Karen Carpenter and Linda Ronstadt belong in the top 10. Both had a quality of voice that, for example, Madonna does not have. Ronstadt sang in a Broadway musical, recorded music with Nelson Riddle (big band era music) and had a power to her voice that few can match. To not even mention her is a definite oversight.
The same is said of Mama Cass by those who were not exposed to the music of the 40's and 50's which had many KC and MC types, beautiful voices that never overpowered because it was the song production that counted to them, not the showcase of their voices. So I do agree that Karen sang nice, if you compare it to the earlier stuff I mention, she has a lot of competition.
Greetings from Costa Rica. I'm surprised karen Carpenter is not on this list. 😢. Now, Madonna is not close to other singers vocally, however, Madonna's music has been AMAZING. Her impact in music industry is awesome. She has managed to have the complete package to be a timeless singer. Her videos, tours and albums are simply wonderful wheather you like it or not. For all those reason she should be number 2. Even number 1. My respets to Whitney Houston. Keep the other bubble gum singers like Taylor S, Britney S, Arianna G. etc. They are just ok. Long live The real Queen!!!!?! Ladies and gentlemen : Madonna❤❤❤❤❤❤ Btw: Her current "Celebration tour" is a total success. ❤❤❤❤
Really good list and honourable mentions put together!!!!! Not sure about your order but maybe because I’m getting up in the years!!!! Missed Connie Francis , Olivia Newton John and Sinead O’Connor in there though???? Happy to see Patsy Kline!! Should do a video on women’s groups like Andrew Sisters through to Celtic Women in the future!!!! Keep up the good work!!! 👍🏻✅
For me, it's a tossup between Karen Carpenter and Linda Ronstadt. Both had amazing voices, perfect pitch, tone and resonance. They were amazing! It's sad what happened to Karen (Anorexia) and Linda (Parkinson's). They will always be remembered in my mind as great female vocalists.
I’m truly surprised Karen Carpenter is not on the list. I believe she was one of the finest female singers of all time. Diana Ross and Olivia Newton John should also be in the top ten. Also Linda Ronsdstat
Melanie? Joan Baez? Linda Ronstadt? Dusty Springfield? The list goes on - so many great female artists - so many genres - Shirley Bassey. OMG so many fantastic great paradigm breaking voices and creative talents.
Judy Garland, Diana Ross, Shirley Bassey and Esther Ofarim ( the Israeli equal of Barbra Streisand) ALL missing as is Maria Callas the greatest voice of the 20th century!
Well, this for one, wasn’t about octave range, which is what all you ding bats commenting can’t understand, there are many facets to being one of the greatest singers, not necessarily vocalists.😮😂
Tbh…..Sarah Vaughn, Dinah Washington, and Eartha kitt had much more power, tricks, and stamina with their voice. Billie just had a unique tone and masterful phrasing. Which the late singer Amy Winehouse also possessed. But she could also still out sing Billie aswell. When it comes to great jazz and soul singers one must have versatility. The reason why Billie is so renown is because she was the first to ever think about phrasing and singing in a slow emotive manner. Something that Amy Winehouse already mastered and improved upon by adding her own quirky phrases mixed with her accent. I will say though that Dinah Washington’s attribute was also similar to Billies. But instead of singing in an emotive slow tone she sung in a crystal clear voice with great power. Something Aretha and Patti Labelle admired and wanted.
Whitney, Aretha; Barbra, Celine Dion, I could mention a lot of great voices in English but is not only about voices is also about interpretation the charisma to make you feel the feelings .
That is why i prefer kate bush, karen carpenter, vashti bunyan over mariah, whitney, barbara or cristina. It is not only about technique and i dont like singers who show off too much.
Lady Gaga should have been on this list. Second only to Whitney. Also, on this video, instead of wasting time on Whitney's struggles, why not show a clip of her singing at the Super Bowl? She was beyond amazing.
Yes, Ella Fitzgerald,News Lady Gaga, Jennifer Hudson ❤,Miley,Christina Aguilera,Not Madonna,this ist Show,Not oktav😂,more better....Aretha,Patty Label.....more....👍
I saw Karen Carpenter eight times, and her voice is so silky and the way she pronounces her words is incredible. The one thing that I was disappointed in is they would not be any of the singers if it wasn’t for Aretha Franklin. She proved how to interpret all kinds of music. Also, you are forgetting the grade is a jazz singers that influenced popular music and that is very important. What about Shirley Bassey and what about all the other wonderful singers they came out of England that had such beautiful, beautiful voices ever.
I've nodded my head to almost all who added their two cents but Gladys Knight? She might be your favorite, but I'm willing to bet that she's not in the top ten of all but a rare few, if any. I'm not saying that she didn't have a good voice, but a very very top singer?
Madonna was a gigantic personality and a peerless self promoter, reinventing herself time and again, to the delight of fans and the amazement of critics and the media. She was not, however, by any stretch of the imagination, a great vocal talent. Of all the singers you mentioned, she stands out in one way only --- by being outclassed by everyone else.
LOL, Madonna a great singer !? You forgot Diana Ross ( solo and with the Supremes ), Beyonce, Donna Summer, Dionne Warwick, Cher and Gladys Knight . The acknowledgments received by Diana Ross who made of her a Mega super star and the greatest singer of all time are : 1- In 1976, Diana Ross was named the "Female Entertainer of the XX Century" by Billboard magazine. 2. In October 1993, in London,Diana Ross was inducted in the GUINNESS BOOK OF WORLD RECORDS, as " THE MOST SUCCESSFUL FEMALE MUSIC ARTIST OF ALL TIME " in history, due to her success in the United States and United Kingdom for having more hits than any female artist in the charts with a career total of 150 hits , singles and albums . In the U.S..A singles charts , Diana Ross has had 18 number one hits ! She is the only artist had a number one in every kind of charts ( Pop, R&B, Jazz&Blues, Disco ) and the only artist had a number one as solo, duo, trio and group . From January 20, 2017 until March 28, 2020 when Diana Ross added her fourth consecutive remix ( Love Hangover at N° 1 , in total, her eighth No. 1) on Billboard's Dance Club Songs chart , made music history : 4 consecutive NUMBER ONE on the Billboard's Dance Charts . Also, Diana Ross is the only FEMALE SINGER to have received 3 PLATINUM records for singles : “ Someday will be together “, 1969 ( but certified by RIIA in August 1997 ) - “ I’m gonna make you love me “ , 1969 ( but certified by RIIA in August 1997 ) , and “ Endless Love” ( certified by RIIA in October 1981) . At the time, in USA, singles were certified platinum records for sales over 2 million copies ). Diana Ross had a record In the UK TOP 10 in every one of the last six decades ( tha last TOP 10 was “ Thank You “ album who reached the UK charts at position number 7 on November 18, 2021) and had a top 75 hit single at least once every year from 1964 to 1996 in the UK, a period of 33 consecutive years: an absolute record for any performer . Also in UK, Diana Ross had 29 singles in the TOP 10 , 62 singles in the TOP 40 and, in total, 86 singles in the charts and 28 ALBUMS reached the TOP 40, 13 of those the TOP 10, and 5 albums reached the number ONE position . In UK, BPI certified to Diana Ross 12 PLATINUM records ( for 6 albums, 4 multiple platinum-“One Woman” ( 1993) album, 2 singles), 19 GOLD records ( for 15 albums and 4 singles ) and 25 SILVER records ( for 16 albums and 9 singles) . Diana Ross has won seven American Music Awards (out of nine nominations ) and an AMA Lifetime Achievement Award . Another record for Diana Ross :she is the only female artist who won two Grammy for lifetime achievement, one as her solo career and one with the Supremes ( that are most important than a Grammy for a single song ) and 13 Grammy nominations . The last Grammy nomination was in 2022 , for the album " Thank You " as " Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album " at 65th Grammy Awards 2023 . This nomination made of Mrs Ross the oldest female artist nominated for a Grammy . Diana Ross ( and Aretha Franklin ) were the only 2 singers ever who sang and recorded every musical genre, from R&B to Soul, from Dance music to Hip Pop, from Jazz to Blues, from Gospel to classical music: Diana Ross, in 1992, with the two tenors Placido Domingo and Josè Carreras, was the first to inaugurate the fusion between classical music and Pop music and then they continued this partnership on a world tour in 1996/1997. Berry Gordy made of Diana Ross the "Black Barbra Streisand". In 1968, when Diana Ross and the Supremes performed on the Ed Sullivan show "Funny Girl", Barbra Streisand said, "Who thinks to be Diana Ross, the world doesn't need another Barbra Streisand"!!
Yes Madonna is a great singer. She has proven for over 4 decades with so many fantastic live performances that she does have a great voice. Even singing two songs live at the academy awards that won the best Oscar for best original song. No she doesn't have the highest octave range but neither do a lot of singers, but she has proven over and over and over for decades that she does have a great voice whether you like her or not.
Hit records do not make anybody a great or best male/female singer of all time. It means that it was popular at that time. Get away from the record charts and think of the quality of the voices you are compering.
Your Number #1 choice is appropriate. I grew up on her music but didn't appreciate the nuances and depth of her music until I became an adult. She is truly an American (global) icon.

Pretty good list but I would think Karen Carpenter & Dame Vera Lynne should be in the top 10. And what about adding Judith Durham, Dionne Warwick, Pat Benetar, Stevie Nicks, Julie Andrews, Sierra Borgess, Mary Wilson & Elaine Paige to the honorable mentions?
Calling these singers "THE BEST OF ALL TIME" seems to be selecting from a restricted set of candidates. A better title for the video should contain more detail identifying the bounds of "ALL". Maybe someone will create a list with a better definition that includes a larger time period and cultural bounds. Then present an initial list and ask for candidates to be under consideration. How about Sissel or opera stars such as Elīna Garanča?
Very nice open mind you have and obviously much more well rounded listening experiences than most. I love your choice of Vera Lynn and doubt most even heard of her. In fact all the band era and the late 40s, early 50s singers were totally ignored here. Further, my number one choice (Etta James) is another. Etta, at 15 was my number one female singer in 1955 when no one at all knew her. Then in 1959, she turned her style totally around into something no one else did and produced three great LPs and I suspect succumbed to the ravages of drugs. Although continuing singing, the edge was gone. Jesse Colter in country was another barely known artist who I would put in my top ten.
I absolutely do think that she does. No she doesn't have the highest octave range but neither do a lot of singers. But she has proven for over four decades with countless live performances that she does have a great voice, and has even sung two songs live at the academy awards that won best Oscar for best original song. You might not like her, but she has proven for decades that she does have a great voice. And this video is not about who has the highest octave range, just go back at :30 in this video and watch again.
Maybe for you, but not for me. I've listened to early Cher and her more recent music and as a singer, she is more a stylist, her own style essentially, and her voice can grate on the ears, though I respect that she has had a long career, I would prefer her over Madonna to be honest.

Barbra Streisand IS The Greatest Female Singer of All Time!. She has a voice that can express everything about life. Whitney Houston was a Phenomenal Singer, no doubt about it. They are all good in their own way. But Barbra leaves them standing. She has the experience. The absolute art of perfection. She is after all a perfectionist. Wanting to initially become an actor. Barbra started singing to get into her desired career. But her voice took her on to bigger and better things. To “higher ground.” She played in the stage productions on Broadway in “ I Can Get It For You Wholesale” and “ Funny Girl”, where she could show off not just her acting skills, but her Phenomenal singing voice too. She then went on to make musicals in films such as “ Hello Dolly” “ Funny Girl” “ Funny Lady”, A Star Is Born” and “Yentl.” A few just to mention. She had it all!. She performed live concerts in Central Park and Hyde Park. And many, many concerts. And has gone on tours throughout her musical career. From 2006- 2024. It is speculated, that she will sing live, once again and tickets are on sale again, this year. It certainly will be another “ Happening.” She has successfully spanned. Seven decades!. Become a Producer, Oh WOW!. From the age of 18 years of age up until now 81 years of age. She has recently written her book her memoirs “ My Name Is Barbra!.” So for me it has to be the incomparable Barbra Joan Streisand. Every time. She has a voice that is deliciously smooth, yet tightly controlled and distinctly outer Borough. The voice of an Angel. She is a Singer, Actress, Film and Television Producer and Director!. she's an icon not for her voice......she's an icon cause she had smt to say to the world..... she managed with her poor voice to sell more than anyone..... she's not best singer for her voice....she's on the list cause she sing things mutters at the time.... i prefer to hear mdna sings papa dont preach instead of angelic voices that sings love storys and romance and boring stuff.....
Agree no voice and just show. Shock value only.

Madonna is on this list, so it is not a serious list. Aretha, Gladys and Patti, Top Three. The next generation, Whitney, Mariah and Celine, Top Three.
karen carpenter above Whitney???? noooo😂
Sorry but Madonna doesn't deserve a spot on this list, She sings false live for real 🙈
What about Randy Crawford, Jennifer Hudson, Christina Aguilera and Diana Ross ??🫤
Then you really have never truly watched her career from the beginning. Have you ever seen her performances at the academy awards? Obviously not.
@@waltmyers6361 Performances are suspect, unless one can be certain that lip syncing is not occurring. Maybe Madonna can sing and dance, without lip syncing, however the important issue here is singing. Does she sing well? Does she emote and enunciate well? Is she as concerned about her vocal performances as her dance and stage acts?
@@waltmyers6361 Don't kid yourself. I watched her career from the beginning. I like her music and she is a decent singer, but one of the best singers of all time? That's a big claim that she cannot make. Sorry.

Agree
She’s not even in the list so No, and she’s from the group called carpenters xdxdxd

Karen Carpenter, Jennifer Warnes, Eva Cassidy, Karen Matheson, Judith Durham are my top 5 in that order for vocals
I'd have to put Ms Durham higher.
Karen Carpenter not in the Top 10?!?!?
I missed Nora Jones, Katie Melua, Christina Aguillera, Roberta Flack ..... and many more
Karen Carpenter and Linda Ronstadt belong in the top 10. Both had a quality of voice that, for example, Madonna does not have. Ronstadt sang in a Broadway musical, recorded music with Nelson Riddle (big band era music) and had a power to her voice that few can match. To not even mention her is a definite oversight.
They were inspiration for many of the women who made the list. This list loses all credibility without these two vocalists...
Has nobody ever heard KD Lang ever sing? Her voice has gone unnoticed her whole career. Not even an honorable mention. That's pitiful.

Her impact in music industry is awesome. She has managed to have the complete package to be a timeless singer. Her videos, tours and albums are simply wonderful wheather you like it or not. About time Ella Fitzgerald and Madonna got thier recognition as one of the bests!
I think Billie Holiday and Karen Carpenter deserve to be in the top ten
Yes I agree. To place Madonna above these two is ridiculous.
Karen Carpenter is the best singer of all time in my opinion.
She was a great person! She is missed already but not forgotten 😞😊❤

Excellent video. Very thorough. I can tell you put a lot into it
Karen Carpenter, Eva Cassidy, kd lang, Joni Mitchell, Judy Garland, Judy Collins, Sarah Vaughan, Dinah Washington.
Good list, but you left out Gladys Knight and Patsy Cline!
I've nodded my head to almost all who added their two cents but Gladys Knight? She might be your favorite, but I'm willing to bet that she's not in the top ten of all but a rare few, if any. I'm not saying that she didn't have a good voice, but a very very top singer?
Also include Annie Lennox.
Whitney Houston and Aretha Franklin are my favorite artists

LOL, Madonna a great singer !? You forgot Diana Ross ( solo and with the Supremes ), Beyonce, Donna Summer, Dionne Warwick, Cher and Gladys Knight .
The acknowledgments received by Diana Ross who made of her a Mega super star and the greatest singer of all time are :

How about Sissel or opera stars such as
Elīna Garanča?

She loves Cinematography. She is the one who has done it ALL Literally. The Greatest, The BEST, The most PHENOMENAL, FEMALE ARTISTES OF ALL TIME!. ♥️😘🌹
