They said they cut this song because they cut Aladdin's mom out of the film. I don't think that's a good enough reason because he could have been singing to his dead mother - I think that could have been even MORE impactful!

I suppose, although a big part of the setup for the song that they left out was the explanation for the ring. She gave it to him to sell so he could hopefully do better for himself and he finds that he doesn't have the heart to sell his mom's old wedding ring so he slips it back on her finger while she's sleeping.

I think they tried doing that too after the mom was scrapped.

It's because Aladdin was rewritten several times. Originally the film seems to be about Aladdin trying to bring honor to his mother since his urchin behavior was not honorful for her. This song, the scenes of Humiliate the Boy song and some scenes including this one which appears in this video show clearly that was about it. But this was not interesting for Disney producers in that time and they wanted a more "attractive" plot. So when they decided to put Aladdin as an orphan street rat who just wants to prove everyone that he's more than this and to live in the palace, a dream that shares to Jasmine's goal who before was not really important before. This decision made Aladdin's mother lose her importance in this new plot so they decided delete her and since this song (Proud of your Boy) was about her, loses its importance too that eventually was dropped from the film. But producers really loved this song and it was unforgetful to them as it is clearly show in this video. It's indeed a shame a beautiful song lose its importance in the film.

If you listen closely to the background music at the beginning when Aladdin first goes into his hut, a short Proud of Your Boy motif plays and leads into One Jump Reprise, and again at the end of the film after Aladdin exits the palace and is going back to the streets a more obvious and extended Proud Of Your Boy motif plays

The shot where he runs through the ruins and belts into the moonlight is so powerful. Something about the moon across the skyline as apposed to a sunset perfectly represents Aladdin's modesty.

Howard wanted this song in the film because it's Aladdin's 'I want' song; it's the song where he tells the audience his motivations and makes him unique from all the other characters in that universe. Cutting this song is why in the film 'Aladdin', the Genie is generally regarded as way more of a memorable and beloved character (and ofc Robin Williams absolutely killing his role) than Aladdin. Before understanding any of this context, I remember loving the movie as a kid (getting all of the songs stuck in my head all the time) but was curious why it wasn't called The Genie instead of Aladdin because he was ofc my favourite character and just thought the story was way more about him than anything.

    Messin' up, screwin' up times
You'll see, Ma, now comes the better part
    Someone's gonna make good
    Cross his stupid heart
Make good and finally make you

Tell me that I've been a louse and loafer
You won't get a fight here, no ma'am

    Water flows under the bridge
Let it pass, let it go
There's no good reason that you should believe me
    Not yet, I know, but

I'll do my best, what else can I do?

Whenever I hear this, I am reminded of a dream that has been haunting me for nearly four months now; it's a dream where I finally get to meet Alan Menken, and I confess to him the tremendous admiration and (I'm not ashamed to say it) love that I feel for him, and how magical his music (that is, the music he has written for Disney) has made my life.
There are many variations on this dream, but the most frequently occurring one starts with me dreaming about the two of us performing various songs together, including "I Will Always Return" and "Don't Let Go" (from "Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron"), "When You Believe" (from "The Prince of Egypt"), "You'll Be In My Heart" ("Tarzan"), and "Best of Friends" ("The Fox and the Hound"). Upon awakening from the dream within the dream, I am driven by desperation to pray to the gods of every religion that has ever existed, begging them to help me find Alan Menken. Then, mysteriously, a sudden wind swirls around me, carrying with it a multitude of colored leaves (as in "Pocahontas"), and next the will-o'-the-wisps (from "Brave") appear to me, and they take me back in time to when "The Little Mermaid" was in production. (For reasons that I can't explain, this results in me seeming to grow younger, more specifically to my early prepubescent (i.e., preteen) years.) Ultimately, they lead me to the studio where the songs are composed and recorded; and, sure enough, Alan Menken is there. Upon my entrance, he looks up at me, at which point, suddenly and inexplicably, my heart stops, and I lose consciousness. It seems that I am about to die from this sudden event, but Alan comes to my rescue. Later, when I come to, I find him by my side, one hand gently caressing my face. With the same beautiful voice that I first heard on the demo to "Proud of Your Boy", he sings to me these words (to the tune of the reprise to "Part of Your World"):
I know you have longed to know where I am.
I know you have prayed to someday stand beside me.
I know you have dreamed to see me smiling at you.
And now, at last, your dreams have come true.
Our hearts have been joined together as one.
Just you and me, now you can be part of my world.
I simply MUST find out where and how I can reach him, before he's gone forever! If you note a sense of urgency in these words, it's because our lives began 46 years apart, and I fear that any day the gods may decide to take him. If anyone has any suggestions as to where I might find the information that I so desperately seek, it would be greatly appreciated.

Well much like in the final version of the film, in this early version Aladdin (and his mother) were very poor. Aladdin's mother was going to take a rug to market to sell to some rug dealer. Aladdin offered to take it instead and apparently the deal went bad. Now what is interesting is somewhere between going to market and returning back home, Aladdin gained possession of a magical ring (which although he isn't aware of contains a genie).

I love this song. It keeps the essence of an innocent kid and the bravery of a man who wants to prove his mom that he can be better across life line. Now I ask you all: Wouldn't you sing this to your moms from each edge of the world?

I definitely understand why this was cut. It pulls the story in too many directions, but at the same time, this is brilliant. idk. Filmmaking is brutal.
It was Brad Bird I think that said, "You have to be willing to throw out good ideas for the bigger picture." (paraphrased)
Could they have made this work? Maybe if they put more resources into it, but they had to get this movie done at the end of the day. They learned that lesson with The Black Cauldron.

It is so sad that this song was cut from the movie. But I LOVE that the song came back in the broadway musical.
A LOT of the early Aladdin concepts actually came back in the musical, like Aladdin's 3 friends. And so many songs that they cut from the movie, came back in teh musical.

This song could have still been kept intact with Aladdin noticing the way he lives isn't how his dead mother would want it, and he would mourn in song about how he will make it up to her memory....easy!! Well, it's a good thing this song will be in the Broadway musical next week!
