  • One of my favourite Disney songs as well as movies. I quite like this version of the song but Menken's voice will never beat Tony Jay's as Frollo.

    I like how Frollo turns the opening cords of Out There into a negative song, whereas Quasimodo turns his version of Out There into a hopeful, joyous song.
    The musical captured this theme really well.

      Tafami If you listen to the song “Sanctuary”(Which is basically “the world is cruel” segment of “Out There” expanded into its own song) from the 1999 German stage adaptation of this movie, “Der Glockner Von Notre Dame”, Frollo sings the starting notes of “Out There” in minor formation near the end as well!

    I find it quite humorous that a lot of people think just because this was a Disney movie that it was marketed to children. The people of Disney wanted not only kids to love it, but their parents and other adults alike. It was decisions like those which make it so successful, especially in 90's. The perfect tone of dark and somber tones to the jolly and fun moments definitely makes this one of my favorite Disney movies of all time.

  • @RavenSutcliffe
    @RavenSutcliffe 3 года назад +160

    I think the way they ended up changing the lyrics was *very* clever. In this preliminary version Frollo tells poor Quasi outright that they would hurt him BECAUSE he's a monster. In the final version, Frollo points out Quasimodo's deformity, and how he, personally, hasn't cared about it and raised him, but the others would see him and call him a monster, and likely hurt him -letting Quasi come to the conclusion that he's a monster "on his own", so to speak. It's much subtler abuse, much more damaging. It accomplishes the same thing but while reinforcing Quasi's trust and dependence on his abuser.

    • @rnbrineg
      @rnbrineg 5 лет назад +13

      I think Alan was about to break his voice, that's why he got softer. I like Tom Hulce's amazing range and sustain. Alan has a great voice but you can tell that last note would have killed his vocal chords.

    • @mint_marigold1229
      @mint_marigold1229 Год назад +3

      As somebody who sang in high school choir and is semi-familiar with vocal technique, I can definitely hear Alan Menken's voice giving out at the end. After the line "I swear I'll be content with my share", there isn't much time to breathe at all before the ending. I think Menken spent a little too much breath and pushed a bit hard on the lines building up to "I'll have spent one day out there", and he didn't have the vocal prep to sustain that final line as a belt. Also, the notes in this line (the highest note being an E5 in this version) are pretty high for a male singer, and higher notes demand a higher amount of vocal control. Most likely Alan picked a key for this demo he would be comfortable singing in, but still, trying to hold out a belt after such a strenuous section of singing is difficult for any singer. Which really showcases Tom Hulce's skill singing as Quasimodo, although not to diss Alan Menken's beautiful musical composition and his singing here. It's a great version regardless of not being 100% perfect vocal techique. The heart is there.

    I prefer this version of the song to the orchestra version. There's a quality about this piano only arrangement that reinforces the theme the song portrays splendidly. Not that I want to diss the orchestral pieces and all but I would have preferred if they kept the piano-only arrangement to emphasize Quasi's loneliness and solitary confinement but also show he has this amazing personality with how elegant and varied the piano is even when it's by itself. I'm analyzing this too much though...

    This movie had ZERO songs nominated for a Best Song Oscar. I don't get why Menken & Schwartz were robbed for this film. I do know some songwriters and composers were bitter that Disney kept winning from Little Mermaid (1989) - Pocahontas (1995), for Best Song AND Best Score. The Oscars even created an additional new category specifically regarding Best Score because Menken kept winning that award. This is definitely the most underrated soundtrack from Alan Menken and Disney.

    @Zephyrrix I agree too, as someone once said (I think it was Frank Losser's daughter) "composers always sing their songs best, even if their voices aren't good!"

    If only Tony Jay sang this, that would've been amazing!

    I can see why the changes were made for the final film, but woooow! This version is really good. Never figured Menken's own voice was this good either, got a somewhat rawer yet pure feel to it.
    also I'm getting weird flashbacks to something right at the start of this? it's probably a few things but I can't put my finger on it. kinda reminds me of the animated Hobbit film a little but I don't think that's it :/

    I think they're both totally different and unique in their own way so its hard to say that one is better than the other
    this has a certain type of charm to it, like a live performance.
    The movie version was more of orchestral version.
