- Hollywood in Vienna 2022 features works from legendary composer Alan Menken and honored him with the Max Steiner Award.
Proud Of Your Boy was composed by Alan Menken but never made it in to the animated movie. It was later adapted for the Broadway Musical. It was performed by the original Aladdin from Broadway Adam Jacobs and the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchester at Wiener Konzerthaus.

@@pianowil - I saw him in Aladdin as well out here in CA at the Pantages. Just perfect. Gotta say, he’s my favorite musical theatre voice, with Jeremy Jordan right behind.
I think the song has a special place in Menkens heart. I love this song too. It is a shame that it wasn't included in the movie!

Adam just brought Alan to tears with Menken's own music. That's when you know you've made it.
I'm certain that had a lot to do with it, but somewhere over the years I picked up the alleged fact that this was one of the last songs he wrote with Howard, and fought for it to be included in the film after his death, but got overruled. (Theater nerd that I am, I think Howard would have won that fight and we'd all be better for it, but that's just a sentimental guess.) If that's true, I'm sure that would influence my response if I were him. Not to take anything away from Adam, who is killer here as he is in pretty much everything,

You’re right that this is more of a ”Howard” song than a “Menken” song, but I think the only reason why it got cut was because the mom got cut from the narrative. Tbbh, it’d seem like a pretty weak musical number if Aladdin is singing a non-existent mom that we never see nor will ever hear about again, and it just seems like bloat that should be cut for the sake of the film’s quality.
Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s a _wonderful_ song that would’ve been great if the mom remained. I think I heard that Menken tried to alter the song so that Aladdin would sing it to Abu, with the title being something like “You Can Count On Me.” But at this point, it’s like, is this even the same song? Does it resonate as strongly as it would if it was Aladdin singing to his mother? And the simple answer is ‘no’, but moving forward with any other altered version dedicated to Abu, Jasmine, the Genie, etc. would essentially bulldoze the original composer’s vision and replace it as “the official” version of the song, so they ironically had to leave the song out of the film in order to preserve it.
This one really show's off Menken's style. The bridge certainly sounds a lot like the bridge in Santa Fe from Newsies.
In June of 2020, I was supposed to perform as Aladdin in a local production of Aladdin Jr. featuring people with special needs, but due to COVID, it’s now happening in March of 2023. This was one of the songs I was hoping to sing in the show, but we’re doing the original version, which is based more on the movie than the Broadway show. Prior to getting cast as Aladdin, I had never gotten a lead role in a show before, so that meant a lot to me. I know both Adam would be so proud, but not as proud as my mom will be when she sees me on the magic carpet.
