In this video Musical Theatre Coach Marc Daniel Patrick discusses the hit number Proud Of Your Boy from the Disney musical Aladdin.
Coming from someone who has seen him do this live on Broadway, this definitely is not how he emotes on stage. He actually does really really well.
I figured as much, my first thought was that this was for the studio recording.
I have always loved this song! When it was FIRST released as part of Disney's "Music Behind the Magic" CD set, I sang it with my voice teacher and then weekly in a kids singing group, and it was one of the songs that taught me the power performing and music truly have and it was one of the things that really made me fall in love with being in the theatre! (Its probably bad to say, but the fact that I had all of the moms in the audience in tears every single week was one of my favorite parts!)
I actually have an aladdin song coming up and we have to sing a song from the show for auditions so I'm definitely going to use that song and use your advice thanks
Aladdin show I don't know where song came from
I would love to see you react to Alex Newell sing I Know Where I've Been! It's beyond incredible.
This is kinda goofy but could you react to the tik tok movement of Ratatouille the musical?
oh my god pleaseee
Can we just appreciate how Alan Menkin is basically making love to the piano. So amazing!
If you were born in the mid-80s, Alan Menken basically just wrote the soundtrack to your childhood-Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Newsies, Beauty and the Beast.
@@douglasrau5094 I was born in 90,so I understand that statement completely! I dont think kids today really understand that ya know?
@@stephaniewayman6850 I was born in the 50s and his songs (and Howard Ashman’s) always strike a chord
Could you react to the Tony Awards performance of "I've Decided to Marry You" from A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder?
Yesssss
“The Leslie Odom Jr.” needs to be added to the dictionary 😂
I love this song so much, I wish it were longer.
A really interesting contrast to this is Michael Arden performing "Out There" on Good Morning America, next to a piano like in this video. He's basically just missing his Quasimodo outfit, but otherwise you can almost believe he's on stage.
Would love to see a reaction to it! ruclips.net/video/z6Zj1HEAugY/видео.html
YES! A textbook example of acting through a song
Yes. I need to see this.
This song actually encapsulates what is supposed to be the true message of the animated film, and musical. It’s really about Aladdin finding his own self worth and becoming a better person. There’s a reason in the musical that genie tells him on several occasions; “Al, you’re gonna do great”. And it’s really a shame that they didn’t double down on that message and storyline in the live action film. Because there’s quite a bit of power and emotion there
I was rewatching this song and realised I’d heard this recording it before- it’s on the Aladdin musical soundtrack! There are a few tracks with Alan Menken at the end, and they decide to have a play through in a different key (tone higher or lower I can’t remember). That’s why at the end he was like ‘cool!’ I’m now more impressed by how well he sings it - especially doing it in a different key to normal!
This song was one of the last ones Howard Ashman wrote and they only found it was cut after he died. Menken holds it really close to his heart as one of his and Howard's best and it makes me emotional to finally see it in a show.
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Howard Ashman considered this his magnum opus - he wrote it not just for the film but also about his relationship with *his* mother and because he was gay. He died of AIDS before finishing the songs for Aladdin and Proud of Your Boy didn't fit with the tone of the new ones so it was cut. When I heard it during the show I started ugly crying it finally made it onstage.
Leslie Odom Jr the s@&t out of it. Best direction ever!
I came to the comments to say the exact same thing. If you really watch Leslie Odom Jr, that line needs no explanation. He was a master at concentrating and holding that moment precious.
I cried when I saw this song live the first time... *sigh*
Oh come on, this performance was out of the blue. Menken didn't tell him beforehand and Adam just had to wing it. This wasn't done with the intention of doing an act, Menken wanted a publicity video focused on Adam's voice and looks, with the idea of making a single out of this. Please review the same song in an on stage setting, because that's completely different. Menken did Adam wrong with this one. Truly.
No, I really don't see it that way. Yes with the introduction, I thought he was going to be slamming him. But as it went on (and I should take this moment to mention that I'm a music educator myself), I think what we're seeing here is a coach pointing out the differences between singing a song and living the song on stage. I think Adam is wavering back and forth between those two. He's used to emoting on stage, but he's also toning it in because it is a live performance by a piano. I see what Marc is doing as just pointing out how the stage performance would be so much more enhanced.
Aladdin was the first Broadway show I’d ever seen and I remember loving this song so much. I love your analysis of it. Can you please react to Ben Platt “For Forever” on the Stephen Colbert Show? His performance is so genuine and vulnerable.
OH MY GOD YES. He wasn't ben. He was even. the details, like u'd just want to give him a hug.
@@hi-qo7bz yessss
Dropping the F bomb on a Disney ballad - spectacular 😁
Tricky what with it being a studio recording with the full emoting element, but love the pointers all the same, great dissection of the narrative.
I just can’t help but love Adam Jacobs’ voice 🥰
#WWLOJD - new mantra 😉
You chose the wrong clip. I would suggest his live performance. He acts much more than he does here. He's just singing along with Alan here. I wouldn't be acting much either because that's not the purpose of this clip. He's literally brought Alan himself to tears when he performs this song live. That speaks massive volumes of any performer if you can make someone weep at their own music.
You should react to "I'm Breaking Down" from Falsettos by Stephanie J Block (or anything from Falsettos really)
“I wasted time, and now doth time waste me;
For now hath time made me his numb'ring clock;
My thoughts are minutes, and with sighs they jar
Their watches on unto mine eyes, the outward watch,
Whereto my finger, like a dial's point,
Is pointing still, in cleansing them from tears.”
RICHARD II
Can you just imagine doing karaoke night with this family!?
ok am I the only one who thought adam did a great job doing all the things he’s saying he didn’t do? he’s doing all the shifts in emotion and the subtle emotions???
No, you’re not alone. Adam is a huge talent. In this impromptu performance he was perfect. Indeed brilliant! The “coach” is full of s-t!
I would love to see you react to VoicePlay's Oogie Boogie Song. They took a really theatrical approach to their a capella cover of the song without losing any of the technicality needed to pull off the song.
Something I noticed a lot with videos of Menkin accompanying is that he does not always play it the way the actor is used to it being played... I first really noticed its with the video of him with Kara Lindsay singing watch what happens, he seems to be playing faster than she is used to cuz she actually falls a smidge behind. She also kept looking to him through it.
If that makes any sense lol also I bet it's a bit intimidating to be accompanied by the person who wrote the song, especially Menkin lol
7:12 - I think, surprisingly, Clay Aiken's rendition of this song does this part very well. Honestly, his version is the reason I fell in love with this song.
Could you react to The Phantom of the Opera duet of Sierra Boggess and Ramin Karimloo?
Also, they definitely should have added this song instead of Speechless in the live action version, which was very disappointing. Wasted opportunity lol
I would love to see your reaction to Neil Patrick Harris Tony openings ☺️
Yes
One of my favorite songs. And actually, one that is easy for me to sing pitch perfect, which is rare. I love Clay Aikens version the best.
Could you react to Adam and Arielle's Broadway Lovers(?) Medley. It's hilarious and really sweet.

One of my favourite Disney songs. So good. I was lucky enough to see Adam 3 times in TO before the Broadway debut AND twice on Broadway. He is spectacular and this song is a heartbreaking/inspiring moment in the show. Pure magic.
I'd not heard Adam before. Wow! He's great.
4:43 .... Who else felt like Marc just straight up slapped them in the face? 🤣🤣🤣 Marc I wasn't ready... Good point... but I was NOT ready for that backhand...🤣🤣🤣👋🏾
Ok, I am burning up the TV remote. Between your great analysis of videos and the beautiful Lea Salonga in concert on my PBS Great Performances I am bouncing between the television and RUclips.
Makes for a wonderful Friday night.
Thanks, MDP!
omg please do Move On from Sunday in the Park with George broadcasted by PBS in 2010!!! Sunday in the Park with George give me such chills and any Steven Sondheim music and any Bernadette Peters gets me in the feels and really remember my love for theatre💜💜
I saw him live and he was magical 😊🙌
Hey Marc, bit of a weird question to ask here but Google-fu isn't turning anything out and I'm really interested in your story.
Is there any external info you can point to (credentials for want of a better word) that show some things you've done or people you've worked with either as a performer or a coach? Obviously you know what you're talking about based on your videos, but musical theatre can be an opaque industry at the best of times so I haven't been able to turn much out. Maybe as is often the case you aren't receiving as much recognition as deserved, which would be a shame :')
I think he did well with his vocal expressions. He went from self scorn to a promise to do better. Besides the plain meanings of the parents being perfect line, I caught a bit of sarcasm. (Why didn't you edit out the damn and f-bomb?)
Love your channel! Could you please react to John Henry performance of “Soliloquy” (Carousel). The fact that a black man, and such a talented one, has transformed the role of Billy blows my mind. ❤️
A request: I recently rediscovered Robert Morse iconic original work in HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS... It’s such a charming , goofy performance..it’s somewhat rare for the person (only known for the stage) is trusted to carry the show to the screen; love to get your take on “I Believe in You”
I second this! How to Succeed is easily my favorite musical, so I would love to see him react to ANY song from it, but especially “I Believe In You”
I would love to hear you sing. Anything out there ?
There’s also a Mandy Patnikin performance of him singing a medley that involves children will listen and it’s quite pretty :)
What about "Proud of Your Boy from Aladdin - Antonio Cipriano" for comparison? :)
Omg I missed it!!!! And this was my audition song for the Performing Arts College I wanted to attend!!!! I'm kicking myself right now that I was able to watch it but I am glad that you reacted to it. Thanks Marc
Can you react to Katharine McPhee doing she used to be mine.
Also, Darren Espanto doing phantom of the opera!
I second the comment about Falsettos - I'd love to see you react to literally anything from that show!
Yes please! Please do What Would I do, What More Can I Say, or I’m Breaking Down (or ANYTHING) from the last Bway revival. Would love to know what you think. I saw the show in the cinema and I would never forget how devastated everybody was when the end credits started to roll. Not a dry eye in the audience. There were people who refused to leave their seat because they were too much of a hot mess to be in public.
I’m glad I saw this because I want to preform this song
Yes, this is actually one of my favorite songs from Aladdin. They can definitely make this song into the Sequel :). watched his sister's production in Sydney. She is the best Jasmine in the world with no doubt. She, later on, went to Broadway for the same role. and then joined by Sydney's Aladdin too. Such an adventure.
I saw him in Sydney. Such a great performance.
Totally agree. This is one of the best songs!
Hello, another great and professional review. I wanted to know your opinion about Viki Gabor, who is only 13 years old and promises to be a rising star. She has an amazing voice, you will surely be delighted with her great vocals. I will give you a few links that I highly recommend react to the song from the Eurovision 2020 opening during the opening ceremony junior sang perfectly. Greetings from Poland

Someone please explain the Lesslie Odom comment
LOJ does a really job of being just being in the moment when he's on stage or singing. He plays the scene, what he's getting real or perceived, as truthful as he can. He never tries to force something and that can result ima fairly subdued choices by him that plays immensely well because its so real and raw and not "acted". This is usually true for performers who see propel the plot and story with song instead of using songs to show how well they sing. Hope this helps.
What an amazing voice he has!! 💙
Thank you for sharing this Marc! Love your content!!
Hey @MarcDanielPatrick really like your videos. I'm a super musical fan, would love to sing, but aren't too good. Love acting too though, and like your emphasis on subtle acting :). Maybe weird question but would u consider reacting to Starkid's offbroadway musical Twisted: The Story of a Grand Vizier. It's a muscial comedy mashup of things you might love: Disney, Wicked, Aladdin. (I know its pretty long but still) I would love to see your reaction to it, also because the music is incredible :) Hope to see the video soonish!
Do you think you could react to Sophia Anne Caruso singing “dead mom”? Because I’m her biggest fan and I would love to see your opinion on her!
Hey Marc... I see you have reviewed Eddie in the Les Miserables movie... I was wondering if you’d reviewed any other of the performances in the movie? Please let me know I’d love to hear your reaction :)
These videos are amazing! I'd love for you to look at a song from Rock of Ages, or Beetlejuice!
Moulin Rouge is my absolute favourite movie and musical and I'd love to hear your opinion on the movie version, specifically songs like Roxanne (with the amazing contrast in voices), and Ewan's version of Your Song :)
As a fan of the movie, I'm not sure how I feel about the Broadway version's ending, but maybe you could explain why they changed it >
If I were more tech-savvy, I would get Marc saying "What the fuck are you singing about!" as my ringtone.
I would love to see you react to Everybody Talking About Jamie! Especially since there's a film adaptation coming out next year. There's really good quality clips of the performances on youtube. My Boy My Man or It Means Beautiful in particular!
I'd love to hear your thoughts on "Wheels of a Dream" from "Ragtime" by Brian Stokes Mitchell and Audra McDonald, the '97 Kennedy Center performance!
Ooooh...my first comment as a patron. Marc, the vocal coach in you really came out...as it should. Adam has the basics, in my opinion, to graduate to having a Marc Daniel Patrick coach. Adam has the exotic look and my preferred Broadway male voice: lyrical, controlled. It must be a bit distancing when there is no live audience. Yes, I went through the video 3 times; watching Adam, watching you and then listening with eyes closed. It was then that I was satisfied with his overall performance. Fine voice! Kudos to you, Marc!
I saw this musical Live in Utah at the Eccles Theater with my mom in 2019. It was amazing. We had orchestra seats. Would you like to know the cast I saw and who they played?
I saw Aladdin in Australia and this song was my absolute favourite!!!
You're smart sir. I love all your content, but you dropping that f bomb made me laugh so hard you sold me on the Patreon
You should do "What the F**k" from If/Then
could you do the epilogue from the les miserable movie?
There is a part of the melody used in the live action movie soundtrack, but they should have included the scene
Could you react to Elton John?
Wonderful reaction as always
ohhh I'm pretty early this time
