      Speaking of Christmas movies(though Guardians isn't totally one, it's close enough), you guys HAVE to do Klaus at the holidays this year. It's my all-time favorite Christmas movie. Every year since it came out, my kids and I have hot chocolate and watch it the first day of Winter Break, and I still cry every time.

      William Joyce wrote several books with more background on the Guardians of Childhood, including several novels and a few wonderfully illustrated books.

      I ended up buying the books that came along with it. The books are so much better! Only thing I didn't read the 4th (there were only 3 out when this movie came out) but they are surprisingly good for children's books. They go so much more into the actual past of Pitch and the way each guardian became a guardian.

  • @Katerine459
    @Katerine459 День назад +245

    My favorite aspect of the movie is just... how they depicted childhood, and how each of the guardians embody a different aspect of childhood that needs to be protected, especially in children, but also in the kid in all of us:
    - Santa is Wonder: the awe that's felt when we encounter something magical.
    - The Easter Bunny is Hope: as he said: "New beginnings. New life." Every spring, new life starts up.
    - The Sandman is Dreams: he wound up being the key. When he was absent, you could see it in the children's faces. Without good dreams, they were just old and tired. When he came back, that was the key to everything else.
    - The Tooth Fairy is the important memories of childhood: remembering what it was like to be innocent. Also, remembering the important lessons we learned in childhood.
    - Jack is Fun: the core of childhood, and one of the best antidotes to Fear.
    Those are their centers, and when Jack figured out his, it gave him the key to what he needed to do to stop Fear.

    My favorite detail about this movie is the ending. When Jamie hugs Jack goodbye, you see this moment where Jack expects Jamie to run through him again. It’s like he believes that he might wake up from this and it was all a dream, because he’s dealt with people not believing in him for 300 years. It’s this small moment of panic before being reminded that it IS all real and this is really happening and everything is going to be okay.

    Honestly I'm seriously impressed with the original creator of this story, William Joyce. He got to do concept art for "Toy Story", and "A Bugs Life". Then wrote and Produced the "Robots" film. He wrote a novel A Day with Wilbur Robinson, which he turned into "Meet The Robinsons" (he got to produce and write the movie as well lol). Then his Gaurdian book series is turned into this film your currently watching, as well as his other book The Leaf Men getting turned into the film "Epic". AND he created Rolie Polie Olie, *both the books and tv show, which was huge for kids back in the day. You can connect his unique art style throughout all of his novels and film projects. Even in "Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium" where he was the production designer. I guess he's working on an animated version of The Great Gatsby now. It'll be interesting to see how that turns out. This man has an amazing imagination and ability to create stories for kids.

      I grew up in the same area as William Joyce; I love to gush about him in reactions, cause he's always been a treat, when I've met him. He does a ton of stuff locally for the arts and children~~~ We actually have a mural for Rolie Polie Olie downtown^.^
      Once I was doing a scavenger hunt with my best friend, and one of the items was to take a picture with an Oscar winner with someone wearing a bald cap & on a whim I messaged William Joyce. He was out of town; so I got redirected to like the publicity manager for his animation studio, at the time. She told me the guy that he won the Oscar with was in town and would be more than happy to take the picture, and we were invited to the animation studio. We took the picture, but they stopped and asked if there was anything else we needed help with. It felt like cheating to ask an animation studio for help with drawings or similar things, but we did need as many pictures as we could of hugs~ Next thing we know we're getting pretty much a tour of the whole place as we were taken around to all the staff still there during lunch, who were seemingly really excited about the whole thing! There were drawings from Toy Story, giant promotional things for Guardians, etc~~~ And any time we've run into his publicity manager, even at a comic book shop, she's recognized us, asked us how we were, and offered to join our team for the scavenger hunt if we did it again^.^

      I don't know why I always felt the ending with him being mocked, bullied and disregarded by guardians and kids at the end never felt like a truly good happy-end. I read a little into his origin's story from the books, and it sorta broke my heart and made me dislike guardians for never wanting to befriend him and try to redeem him in all the centuries they knew him.

    • @lilbrownbear
      @lilbrownbear День назад +21

      @@MegaMilenche looking back i feel like his ending was very much a "we're open for a sequel" which they never got. if it was made today we definitely would've gotten pitch redeemed. its really interesting tho that the main hero and the villain are in the same situation and it really just comes down to being accepted by the community and found family trope that makes frost the good guy. also makes me think if the moon chose each guardian based on something they did when they were human and their power is in relation to their core, what was pitch like before he got turned. ALSO ALSO little me always found it weird that pitch's who thing was about not being believed in when the boogyman is the one thing people believe in the most while the others are most cultural/religious based figures. plus how the kids "went through" him at the end even when they could see him and said they believed in him (just weren't afraid) like isnt the whole point of being walked through that they're invisible and not believed in. idk theres so minor plot holes in this

      Pitch is the perfect main character for the sequel which would also delve into his past and his children. He's an incredibly important guardian for fear, probably the reason why many people survived through the dark ages.

    • @parmisiguess
      @parmisiguess День назад +9

      @@MegaMilencheyupp, i wish they’d done something like how we all need fear to survive too but it doesn’t have to be in a “villainous” way. at the end of the day, pitch wanted the same thing as jack, which was to be believed in and seen. so i do wish it didn’t end with him being bullied as you say by the guardians and instead an attempt to see his perspective and making him feel seen/heard

    • @Megaspinosaurusrex
      @Megaspinosaurusrex 20 часов назад

      @@lilbrownbear I have to agree that the boogeyman being the one with the less powers felt weird to me. Nearly every culture in the world has a boogeyman, while I think many probably just throw their kids's old teeth when they fall.
      I'm from morocco, and while I was obviously aware of all of those characters growing up, they're obviously not part of our culture, since we're a muslim country, while the uardians are mostly influenced by european floklore and christian holidays. What we have on the otherhand, are a bunch of different boogeymen lol
      Not trying to put down the movie obviously, but it's an interesting thing to think about. I would honestly love to see a slightly similar concept that uses different boogeymen stories from around the world

    That elf trumpet player is my favorite character. So much personality in just two tiny appearances, and so relatable for any musician!
    Tactically speaking, Pitch's plan was brilliant. First, take out memory, so the kids can't remember anything before the nightmares took over. Also, the tooth fairy is a daily thing, so the Guardians lose believers every day. Next, go after dreams, so the kids can't imagine anything different. Then hope, so they fall into despair. After those are all gone, Wonder and celebration are easy marks. Guy must've been a general.
    Jack's center is something I can't really grasp. It feels more complex than just "fun." Both times his essence was shown, it was deeper than that. There was a choice between bad stuff that we know exists in the world and making your own good time. Like, sure, the world is dark and cold. Let's admit it! But we don't have to live there. We can spin it. We can make the dark and cold world we live in funny and awesome, choose to focus on fellowship and happiness. And that choice has a bravery and stubbornness to it. I feel like Jack Frost isn't the Guardian of rich kids in mansions who have never known what it's like to be scared or go without. Jack Frost is the Guardian of hungry kids on the edge with their parents screaming at one another in the next room over, making a game out of what they have on hand to make their world that much brighter. The kids who have to make their toys out of the snowballs. I think Oak and Quinn started to get at it toward the end.

      You're spot on about Pitch being a General! In the books, he was originally a hero who led the armies of the Moon against the Nightmares and DEFEATED them. He also guarded their prison for centuries, while the Nightmares used every tactic to get him to set them free. They eventually used the voice of someone he held dearer than his duty, and even though he knew it was a trap, he opened the prison because he didn't want them trapped with the Nightmares. The Nightmares overtook him, made him go mad, and he turned into Pitch Black, the Nightmare King.

    This was such an underrated film. I think that there were two major problems with the film as a whole.
    1 being that the marketing wasn’t too big especially in comparison to movies during that time period such as Hotel Transylvania, Brave, and Diary of a Wimpy Kid.
    2. The movie was about Jack Frost. Who isn’t a main stay for children & casual audiences as a whole. In fact I think that older teens & parents would’ve enjoyed this movie more than the younger children this movie was geared towards.
    This is definitely a favorite of mine, in recent years I had my wife watch this too just to see her reaction, and she loved it.

    One of the fan-favorite theories is that Jamie is a descendant of Jack’s sister. Similar coloring and the movie makes an effort to have both Jamie & Jack’s sister say the same line “Jack, I’m scared.” I don’t think it’s ever been confirmed but it’s a fun little headcanon lol

    There's a theory out there that Jamie is probably a descendant of Jack's sister because at the beginning of the movie Jack tells the wind to take him home, which happen to be Jamie's town. And Jack mentions that he's helped Jamie have fun in many occasions. He might not remember why but something always take him back to that place.

    Before I watch this vid, just want to say I'm SO EXCITED that you guys are reacting to this film! It's such an underrated and beautiful film, in my opinion, and is a cult classic of the 2010s. They're based on the children's books by William Joyce and are directed by the same guy who did Into/Across The Spiderverse. There's a fan theory that Jamie is related to Jack Frost as a descendant of his sister, and another of Jack Frost being a literal Winter Sprite or the actual spirit of Winter and therefore doesn't need to be "believed in" in order for him to have powers. This would make him the 2nd most powerful Guardian behind Sandman for the same reasons as he's the embodiment of positive dreams, which is another fan theory! 😁⏳️❄️

  • @winterwolf211
    @winterwolf211 День назад +9

    I love the fan theories about the centers. Especially one for Pitch Black being a guardian for fear. Which sounds bad but to a child having some fears is good, makes them more cautious about running in the street, away from strangers, away from fire and whatever else that might hurt them.
    Given he was a well loved General in his past before he was corrupted, it would've been nice to see him turn to good in a sequel/prequel about his life in the books. But sadly that never happened.

    This movie in story is an Easter movie however as it came out in November it can also be a Thanksgiving movie.
    There is a book series this film is based on and in it Pitch's backstory is tragic and makes since why he hates the Man in the Moon. Sandman is the one Pitch fears the most, which when you think about it dreams are powerful right next to Bunnymund who's center is hope.

    Rise of the Guardians is one of my favorite stand alone animations. I heard some people complain its not exactly like the books, but I never read the books and I felt this was a beautiful animation on its own. The graphics are stunning, the music moves me to tears, and the lessons and story I adore. I like how Santa protects childhood wonder, Tooth Fairy memories, Easter Bunny hope, Sandman dreams, and Jack Frost is meant to protect fun. All pure parts of childhood.

    This movie is based on a book series called "Guardians of Childhood" written by William Joyce. They are stories that he told his children that, hopefully one day, I will read.
    I love this movie, ironically, more than my grandchildren did. 😂 The story is awesome, animation is beautiful, comedy is top knotch, it's loaded with lessons, and I loved the choice of voice actors!
    Some others I think you all would enjoy are 2013's "Epic" (also, loosely based on a William Joyce book), and "The Croods."
    A real "sleeper" would be 2015's "Strange Magic." It does not fit the "norm." 😊
    As always, love your reactions. I'm so glad you chose this one! ❤

    This movie! Even if it hadn’t been as lovely as it was, I’d probably have a soft spot for it, if only because it’s from the mind/world of William Joyce. As a kid, his picture book, SANTA CALLS, was one of mine and my little brothers’ favorites - he has a very steampunk vibe to his work and it’s so insanely creative. As for this film, it’s from a world he designed in a series of novels (that he illustrates, of course), and several of the characters draw inspiration from his daughter who passed away from a brain tumor right before this films release, as well as his late wife who passed in 2012 from ALS. I always found that part of the joy of this film and all other works from William Joyce is that he gives equal parts joy and loss - because even those we lose are always a part of us in some way.

    I'm sad this movie never got a sequel/prequel. There is SO much backstory for all of the characters. A lot of their back stories actually predate earth/humanity if I remember right.
    Bunny is the last of an ancient alien species, and he shaped the earth into the circular shape it is now.
    Sandy was a star pilot, aka a shooting star, also I believe to be the last of his race.
    The man in the moon was a price of a now dead race that was at war with the nightmares.
    Jack is the reincarnation of the Man in the Moon's guardian (Nightlight) whom died saving him.
    Pitch was a general and protector of the cage that the nightmares where trapped in. They tricked him into entering/opening the cage by imitating his daughters (who becomes Mother Nature) cries for help, overwhelming and consuming him.
    That's just the bits I can remember.
