  • The Libra H2O is the latest generation e-reader from Kobo. The Libra features a 7 inch E Ink Carta HD display with a resolution of 1,680 x 1,264 and 300 PPI. The Forma has a 8 inch screen.
    This device has a front-light and color temperature system to read in the dark. These come from the 19 LED lights on the bottom of the screen, that project light upwards, evenly distributing it, there are no light splotches.
    Underneath the hood is a Freescale Solo Lite 1GHZ processor, 8GB of internal storage and 512 MB of RAM. It is powered by a 1,200 mAh battery that should provide you’re standard weeks on a single charge. Rakuten says its HZO Protection gives the Kobo Libra H2O water resistance to the IPX8 rating, with endurance of up to 60 minutes in 2 meters of water.
    You can buy this e-reader anywhere in the world from the Good e-Reader Store

    Again. Focus less on the software and more on the Libra specific features. Vertical mode? auto rotation? micro-usb sync speed?, resolution?, loading speed etc. Software is likely same as other kobos, so just note stuff that aren't same as every other kobo. what differs from Forma? From earlier models?

      @@johnanth of course the entire experience is important, I wouldn't want to deprive you of that. But wouldn't you get a better overview if kindle vs kobo software was compared separately, and then reader-specific features presented per reader? That's the alternative I'm hoping will be made available. That way large software updates can be handled per company, and not per model.

    I'm going to have to disagree on the glow light part of this review. It's even and beautiful, yes, but it can't dim properly. When tested in a fully dark room, its minimum dim level (1%) is god awful compared to a Kindle Paperwhite from nearly a decade ago. It makes reading in full darkness uncomfortable and, even at its lowest level, can light up your bed and even ceiling. A proper glow light should be able to illuminate the page just enough to read the text comfortably, even in a dark bedroom, and the Kobo Libra H2O completely misses the mark here. I'd love it if in future testing you could compare the lowest light levels e-readers are capable of outputting.

    I have an original Kobo Aura from 2013 or 2014. Wondering what the differences are. I can't find any online comparisons. My Kobo still seems to work okay. Recent updates have really improved it. It was glitchy for years. But seems good now.

    • @lorettabertoli3736
      @lorettabertoli3736 3 года назад +1

      I do have an old Aura from 2013 too and just bought a kobo Libra because I wanted an upgrade: even if my Aura did become less glitchy with updates it started to have problems with the ON/OFF button. The main differences are: 1) larger screen 2) the screen can rotate also in landscape mode 3) you can set a yellower light for "night mode" 4)you can turn page on the screen or with the side buttons. I love it!♥

    • @fireblazer6661
      @fireblazer6661 3 года назад +1

      @@lorettabertoli3736 I ended up splurging and buying the Kobo Forma. Love the bigger screen. I bought an aftermarket sleep case for 20 bucks on amazon that works well. I had the Forma lock up twice on me in 2 months. Recently had to let the battery die (which with the light on took 20+ hours and the ereader was a ways down on battery) because no reset options tech support suggested would work oddly. I suspect a corrupted ebook caused it both times. One thing I do wish, is that you could 100% lock rotate, when you want to. The rotation lock mode apparently only locks it to that mode, portrait or landscape, so if you're lounging in bed and tip the screen forward it will sometimes rotate. BUT besides those few quirks, it's working better than my old Kobo Aura did for the Aura's first 3 years or so of life, haha. I've read a few entire books with it. I've used the night light while sitting in front of my glass doored wood stove in the dark and it doesn't hurt the eyes at all, no strain. I'm pretty impressed so far. At first I hated the aesthetics of the lack of symmetry having buttons on one side, but I've come to love it. I don't have to dirty my screen touching it.

    • @fireblazer6661
      @fireblazer6661 3 года назад +1

      @@lorettabertoli3736 Oh, one thing I was surprised by was that I don't notice any performance difference between my 7 year old Kobo Aura and my new Kobo Forma for PDFs. BUT you can read Manga easily without zooming on the Forma. PDFs are readable too because of the bigger screen and better screen resolution. BUT if you want to pinch to zoom, it's just as slow as my Kobo Aura. I've come to like Pocket for reading articles too, as another side point. I was upset there was no newspaper reading availability and then I realized I'd never tried pocket.

      I initially thought the same, but unless you copy manga or PDFs; 8GB is plenty of space. I have copied over 400 ePubs and it still has room left. As my little brother put it, unless you want to keep your eBooks on the eReader, you'd be hard pressed to actually use up all 8GB.

    My God, why do they keep making these big, thick and cheap chunks of plastic where the bezel looks like something from the 1970's? I love my sleek Kobo H20 and Aura One and I guess I need to baby these thinner, tablet-like units because I won't pay a cent for something that looks and feels like a cheap toddler's toy. The plastic bezel literally takes up 1/3 of the unit's real estate and they are thick as a real book, which is insane - if someone produced a phone or tablet like this they'd be laughed off the stage, fired, and probably assassinated outside the building. This is 2019 people, thinner, faster, and higher resolution are the words of the day.
    And no one seems to like the Forma either, and from Indigo/Chapters store employees I've talked to, it's a poor seller with lots of returns, so why the heck is Kobo effectively giving us a lower-end Forma. And who in the world views this as an "upgrade" from the H2O or Aura One? Is the president of Rakuten forcing this horrible design down the R&D pipes, customers be damned?

      @@Anth230 My Kobo Aura One has a very good light, completely uniform. Obviously, it varies from one product to the next. I honestly see no reason why I should buy any new Kobo model unless they really do something about the glitchy software and very slow screen response rate (which is worse on Aura One than on previous Kobo models), especially for highligthing and looking up words in a dictionary.. oh yes, and provide the possibility to install your own dictionaries, like you can do on Kindle. Also, why go from 7.8" (Aura One) to a 7" again? Why Kobo cannot grasp that we want large e-reader screens, not small ones?

      @@Anth230 I have read quite a few user opinions on Aura One and some received a product like mine (comfort light orange (not red), very uniform and not blotchy at all), while others did not. However, while the light on my Aura One is perfect, the response time of the screen is much worse than with the two previous Kobo models I have (Glo and Aura H2O). It seems as if every Aura One product has some kind of defect - be it comfort light or slow screen response time. It pisses me off that Kobo keeps releasing these half baked (or even poorer) e-readers instead of making one that would really be right.
      Kindle has quite a few features which Kobo does not, better screen response time and superb dictionary arrangement (you can install and use any dictionary you like), so the only saving grace of Kobo is the larger screen size of Aura One. If Kindle made an e-reader in that size without the ads and with the same comfort light, I would switch to Kindle immediately.

    • @vincefreeman4756
      @vincefreeman4756 5 лет назад +1

      @@Anth230 The point of my comment is the 1970's design of the Forma/Libra, not the screen quality, and if Rakuten improved the screen and made it available in a thin, smaller unit then I'd be happy. Instead they seem intent on killing the e-reader market by ONLY producing these old school monster-bezel dinosaurs. People I know are not looking to downgrade to one of these toy-like monstrosities and instead are trying out various Asian e-readers (that look like they were made in 2019) to see if any make the grade.
      Could you even imagine Apple releasing their "latest iPhone" with a massive 3" bezel and at 2X the thickness of the X? They'd be run out of town on a rail.

    You know what would be a perfect design? If that ugly-ass bezel piece with the archaic "page buttons" was a separate piece that could be removed and those that wanted a real e-reader would have a real e-reader, not a dinosaur from the early days of technology.
    Or just be realistic about it being 2019 and produce a thin, sleek tablet-sized version (i.e. an upgraded Aura One/H2O) alongside the ultra-thick, huge-bezel toy line.
