Kobo Libra vs Kobo Forma Comparison
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 14 авг 2024
- The Kobo Libra and the Kobo Forma have the same asymmetrical design and manual page turn buttons. These devices have many features that are different from each other. The Libra is waterproof and is made of plastic, while the Forma has a Mobius and Carta screen, making it very light.
In this Good e-Reader comparison video we go over the specs and hardware. We also take a look at the reading experience with EPUB and PDF files.

I love these side-by-side comparisons. I often wish that I could see them in person to compare, but the stores rarely have the models I am interested in.
Nice video - you should update to let people know that the Forma now has the same firmware upgrade as the Libra though!!
Yups... I'm Verifying that's correct: The forma as the same functionality when it comes to the bottom progess bar (if one wants it there, it can be shut off also)
Are we skipping entirely over their physical form factors? I get that one screen is bigger than the other, but what are the buttons like to press? What's the difference in holding them? Packing them in a bag? What is the grip surface of each made of? I know the Forma is covered in soft touch rubber. Is the Libra hard plastic like the Clara? That's a big point of interest for me.
I suspect the Libra power button is better than Forma's. The Forma power button has poor feedback and is slightly wobbly. Turning on was tricky until I trained myself to press evenly across the button (it is not round) but it has a thoughtful touch - a "dot" light on the button itself that flashes during power up.
Forma power button sucks, the plastic on it is silky and nice, screen is not only larger but also better quality (Mobius Carta 1440 x 1920). Forma backlight is slight uneven on one of the edges, but doesn't bother me.
@@gayhax actually I think it can be used to download pdf books onto your kobo

Update. So, Kobo gave me the option of a refund, or a 3rd device. I decided to get a device... again. FINALLY I managed to get a Kobo Forma that isn't broken. A couple months in, it seems to be working great and I've fallen in love with it. BUT it took $345, plus 6 months of headaches, before getting a device that would actually work properly. Zero issues "so far"
My 7 month old Forma had an automatic software update in October that gives it those missing Libra features: the scrubber bread crumbs, progress bar, and more - time 3:00. I expect Libra and Forma now have exactly the same software and UI features.
Relative to my Nook 6" screen, I am glad I paid the Forma screen premium. However with 300 dpi either model would be satisfactory replacements. I'm reading the hell out of the Forma. After the screen size (it's essentially a paperback) is checking out library books ( that's the "overdrive" you might read about). Then the night light. Don't get an eReader without that.

Do you get the grey shade line on the screen in glow light next to the thicker side of the device? That is annoying as hell, and a bit disappointing. I gave up reading at night. They day reading experience is unbelievable, i forget i am looking at a screen, but that glow light to read in the dark creates this shade on the screen that takes me out.
@@marius4iasi Call support. Even if not in warranty they might be able to help. Firm persistance is powerful. These things are expensive so they better! As for my Forma's night light: light was not perfectly even across the entire screen, however the "shading" was not dark and not a single line, text is easily readable. I thought it added character, kind of like a real book will not be always perfectly illuminated from a reading light/lamp.
Good review but one thing being overlooked. A lot of us are over 50 & the eyes start to have issues reading smaller screens. For those of us with progressive lens the Forma looks fantastic. I'm fine with my Oasis but that extra inch on the Forma gives you a lot more territory.
Wish you would pick them up and show them at a distance so we get idea of size of them in hand. I'm sure you could do same review content but have them in hand with camera panned out.
How is glare outdoors in daylight? Seems like the glass screen might be a big disadvantage of the Forma.
I having been living the Kobo Forma NIGHTMARE since October. It started locking screen rotating annoyingly often when I wasn't flipping it. Then started locking up. It got so bad I got a replacement in January. My luck... USB is broken... page buttons feel and sound broken (make a crunchy sound/feeling when pressed), AND guess what... also freezing up on my. First device wouldn't even reset, so you had to drain the battery. The replacement, while it freezes up, does reset. Now I'm either getting a refund or a 3rd replacement. I've been offered a refund, but I really just want a device that WORKS. I feel like I should have bought the Libra, but I didn't like the recessed screen and power button position.
If the Libra is kind of small with 7 inch imagine the KINDLE.
Nice video! I have a Forma (refurb from Ebay, $158) and at this price it's a great value. I like the larger screen, very sharp resolution, and both Overdrive (public library access) and Pocket app integration. I'd rather not use those Android (basically a tablet with e-ink) powered e-readers, since I don't want to use it other than reading my e-books and pocket articles. It would defeat the purpose of having an ereader, for me, if I added email or social media access... so the form factor, lightweight, natural light glow function, oh and it's water proof all make a great package at this refurb price. I wouldn't pay retail for this model, though.
Thank you for this complete review. Going to gift myself a Forma right now ! :D
How come
Well, I just sold the thing. The form factor is amazing. Fits well in the hand, the buttons are as good as the screen size.
But oh my god, the screen itself is bad.
I decided to buy this one because of the confort light feature, and I could not use it. The screen sometime kind of flicker. It's weird, my GF don't see it but I do.
It gets even worse as you keep reading. The lightning in far from uniform. There is a blue bar of light next to the buttons, and the light is bluer on this half of the screen than on the other.
Reading is a pain from going to this darker to lighter part of the screen.
Loved it but started to hate it when I couldn't stop thinking about how bad it was WHILE reading.
Got it exchanged once, same problem with the new one. And as internet showed me, nearly everyone has these problems.
Waiting for ma Kindle Oasis to be shipped.
@@JeanGillesTouraine so you are giving up on your library, since both formats are not compatible? Unless you've never used an ereader before.
@@JeanGillesTouraine How do you like your Oasis? Is it easier to read?
@@BG-ig6fd I ended up keeping my old paperwhite which already offered a better reading experience than what I experienced with the Forma.
I’m still waiting for the refresh of the oasis to change my e-reader.
Manga in their original format are usually about 7" anyway, so the smaller one should be just fine really.
The screen size measurements are diagonal, so even the forma is slightly smaller than a manga volume. I thought the same thing initially too and was worried about upscaling.
I have a feeling the new reading features like automatically opening the scrubber and leaving breadcrumbs would eventually be back-ported to the rest of Kobo's own devices that they still support with feature updates, similar to what happened with the Likebook Mimas, where some of the features introduced on that got back-ported to the Mars.
It has been done, since the video was recorded.
As a note, on my Kobo Forma, I have the same header/footer information as you display in the video. They must have updated the OS or something to include it on both.
It looks like the letters on the Forma are much crisper than on the Libra. And I was hoping for amazing contrast on the Libra... :(
I have to read many pdfs by the university
which ereader model do you recommend?
Actually I have kobo Clara HD, but the screen is to smaller and that is frustrating.
University text books are too big for e readers. I would at least need a 10 inch screen size and those large e ink devices are very expensive. You may as well buy a laptop or tablet.
you want a 10 inch reader if you are mostly reading PDF's consider onyx boox
I have a 1st Gen ipad, and find the screen too small for PDFs. BUT, even though it's ancient (8 years old as of writing), pinching to zoom on the original ipad is very responsive. E-Readers are terrible for PDFs because you have to pinch to zoom, and there's a lot of laggy glitchyness to both the Kindles and Kobos when doing this. They're NOT fast at all for PDF zooming. You Need a minimum 10 inch. And honestly, anything bigger would be better. THAT SAID, BEAR IN MIND... Bigger tablet screen is going to strain your eyes more too. So consider that as well. If you insist on E-Ink, get the biggest screen you can get for PDF. Depending on how much you want to spend, you CAN get giant e-ink displays from companies like ONYX, or Pocketbooks new InkPad X... but you'll pay 500 dollars probably give or take.... and for that price you can get a brand new 10 inch ipad, taxes in. Cheaper even on sale. But I'm not a fan of the iOS ecosystem.
The review was spent describing how much better the Forma is, with its larger screen, then wrapped up with "but the Libra is a better bang for the buck."
Correct
Do you guys not see the uneven lighting on the Libra? It would drive me nuts! In fact I am returning my piece which has a different kind of uneven lighting (different places). I've heard it's not uncommon with Libras. It's a bit worrying.
I have the kobo libra 2, and I realize that my eyes start to get tired after a short period of time
Also, does the Forma screen work the same way as Libra's? I've seen a video where someone was saying Forma has a different screen that flickers and tires the eyes
Dont confuse me
I have the same books Calypso and The Racketeer. I like how the white looks. Very sharp. I am debating if I should get this or wait and see if a Forma 2 will come out also in white. I have the H2O 6.8 and debating if the extra 0.2" will be worth it. I already have two 7" Oasis 2017 and 2019 so I do not see the point in getting this so I may hold out and see if a Forma in white comes out whenever they come out with the next version. I really want an 8" but its sooo soooo expensive for a 32GB. The Libra seems like a good buy tho. If only a little bigger. I am just in love with the white color.
Heidi S just buy and continue with your reading, stop procrastinating... hahaha
Heidi S lucky u to have so many awesome ereaders :) I have the oasis 2 and wanted to ask you if it stacks up better than the forma or libra
Just get the black one and put it in some bleach overnight, comes out pearly white. Thank me later.
@GoodeReader how does that Libra compare between the two Nook Glowlights 6” vs 7.8” in terms of Reading? Thanks.
In the kobo libra 2 I find that the letters look washed out and faded. I find it a little harder to read
I am trying to change my Kobo
libra H20 to be in English HELP
Really like white version, why they didn't use also in forma?
Because black matters
In everything I’m with this, except for simulate the paper of a book.
Agreed, I don’t like gray and black tech devices and that’s 95% of what’s available. Much prefer a warmer color, like white or any rainbow of colors. The tech industry is so boring in this regard, and frankly male-dominated. Do they have any idea how much money they lose due to lack of colors?
Has the Forma ever been updated to match the software features of the Libra?
i wonder the same thing. i can buy the forma for cheaper now. but i need to know this too
The Saga of Tanya the evil??
Good book choice! Reading that as well rn :p
+1
Is it just in the video, or does "Kobo Forma" have a much sharper font / display?
Finally, I had a comparison, thanks for your work Peter !! ;-)
@@thamzhb Thanks ;-)
Can you turn off the touchscreen on the Forma? I always accidentally touch it while reading and it can get annoying after a while. Would love if this could be turned off.
I have the Kobo Aura one. Would you consider the Kobo Libra an upgrade, or should I stick with what I’ve got? Thank you.
I’m about to buy my first Kobo device pretty soon, and I was eyeballing the Aura One Limited Edition. With the Forma, I don’t care too much for its design or the gyroscope, it reminds me of the Kindle Oasis, which I just returned because of how uncomfortable it is to hold
@@lewis9950 I own a Kobo forma and its quite difficult to hold although its very light. What im having difficulty is how wide it is. I think a 7 inch model will do good. Of all the Kobo devices I owned, the best was the Aura One because of its ideal size for my asian hand. Perhaps the libra is a better option, since it has the size of aura one (around 7 inches) and features of forma.
@@erictiburcio9941 I have the Libra and love it
@@erictiburcio9941 thank you. This actually makes the decision easy for me. I want to upgrade my Aura but was worried the forma might be too big. I’ll go with libra!
can you do a libra vs h2o 2 comparison please?
Oh man, I was looking to buy my first E-reader.
After quite some research, I decided to go for Kobo, but none of the existing Kobos are a 100% match for me.
I want the newest tech in it, needs to lay nicely in my hand, it has to be durable (transportation), the price shouldnt be too high, it should be waterproof and wifi would be a nice plus.
I think I am going to wait for new Kobo devices next year, bc what kills the Libra one for me is the recessed screen.
I suspect Forma and Libra have the same UI/software. My Forma's software was (automatically) updated in October 2019 - via the built-in wifi. I can check out library books, synch to my Pocket account, and (as of the update) my Dropbox account. After dropping several times Id say durability is pretty good. As for price, you pay a premium for an 8" screen regardless of brand. Forma is waterproof, but don't go diving with it.
What did you end up going with? i'm leaning towards the libra now. i like the warm lighting, buttons on the side, and more open source than kindle. and what did you mean "recessed screen"?
@@JohnnyHobbes Are you getting the libra or clara HD?
@@dot5816 my budget increased so now i'm looking at the forma or libra OR oasis. 🤦🏾♂️ do you have one? which do you like?
What margins are you using for the Forma? I see a lot of wasted space between the first and last lines from the header and footer. Can that be adjusted? I want to get an 8 inch reader but what's the point if there's so much space wasted due to the header and footer?
With a recent software update - October 2019 - the Forma has the same header and footer features. But even before the update you could toggle those for a little more space. But a bigger difference I think is tweaking either or both of font size and line spacing. With 300 dpi screens the practical limitation might be your personal vision acuity.
good comparison. *!*
Would have been useful to see the size comparison between a genuine manga and those screens.
Also, does these readers have a feature to automatically crop the images in order to remove unecessary margins (since the reader already have bezels).
can we read magazine subscriptions on these devices?
My Kobo Clara HD had the reading UI style of the Kobo Forma when I got it but through a software update it changed into the style of the Kobo Libra H20. I didn't use it for a long while and then when I started again in late November the update was available. I'm now considering getting a Forma and I wonder if it has received a similar update by now?
What did you end up doing
I have the Forma. It is currently seized up and unusable. This is the second time it has happened. I am hoping that, when the battery runs down totally, I can restore it to life. Really annoying.
Did you try reverting it to factory settings?
Is this LED or E ink? I thought this was an E Ink device but I heard you say LED light?
Yes, the display panel itself is e-ink, epaper
The light source comes from LED bulbs
It not easy to choce betviven this two, i have today a Clara HD and that is to small, so small i dont use it much, or more right hardly not att all coz of the tiny sitze, only when traveling, maybe i will go for the Libra whit 7" screen, maybe will be enuf, but gess it will be a Forma...
they're too damn costly tho
Why the libra has a green tone?
Excellent content! Very helpful reviews.
Kobo needs to seriously step up their game on these devices. Terrible lighting on 3 different Kobo Libra units. The worst i've ever seen on a e-reader. Unacceptable.
You kept returning them? What did you end up doing
So has any oft the newer kobo devices a dictionary that lets me look up japanese to english? The English to japanese dictionaries are useless for learning new Japanese vocab...
Shouldn't you be able to install any dictionary with the Kobo devices? The translation features of the Kindle are the only thing that is making me consider them at the moment.
@@Rocket33r I haven't found the option for a Japanese-English dictionary for my kobo as of yet. Being unable to efficiently read Japanese texts on kobo I too am considering buying a kindle...

Why a stylus for an ereader
*The Size Does Matter.*
What is the internal storage for these devices please
8gb or 32gb for forma
8gb only for libra
Anyone else have issues with the power button on the Forma?
Yes, it's a main complaint about the forma. I bought a refurb one and the button just didn't work. Im not heavily leaning to the libra because of the back button.
Does the libra have a moebius screen?
no
So nice them🤩But how much are their prices?
Would we expect a new forma soon?
I'm also curious, want one, but hesitate to buy since a new model can't be too far off maybe?
4:17 old elf
Does the libra use pwm flickering like the forma ?
looks like almost all reviews avoided to discuss this issue intentionally so I guess kobo havn't changed anything.
Every ereader does this
No it doesn't, it's a different (and for the mind better) screen technology
Whatever it is, if I can't import my own ebook collection, not gonna be useful all that much to me.
Use the Calibre desktop app, and you're all set :)
you can but ok
Now you have Dropbox integration too
