Hey all! I have a bit of clarification regarding the Libra Color's speed. Even though the website doesn't list the device with an E-Ink Carta 1300 display, I read that this was confirmed via another news website. To be sure, I've messaged Kobo directly to double-check and will update my comment once I hear back. Secondly, this device also has a Dual 2.0 GHz processor, which definitely helps with the speed. I should have mentioned that in the video! EDIT: My contact sent me a fact sheet, which contains the same specs listed on the website (no mention of Carta 1300). I've asked to be put in touch with somebody in engineering to discuss this a bit more in detail, but not sure if that will happen.
Can you mark up sideloaded ebooks that aren’t purchased from Kobo? That’ll be a deal breaker for me as I’ve got a lot of Kindle ebooks that I’ll need to change the file format on Calibre and sideload onto the Kobo.
Very fair review Maneetpaul. I pulled the trigger on this device because I wanted to annotate directly on the book. Looking forward to Kindle’s iteration, and a colour Kindle would be fabulous!
Thank you very much for this review. You are the first to show the Libra 2 and the Libra colour side by side for a black and white comparison and that's what I was waiting to see before making a choice. I do think that the colour feature is very cool, and they seem to have nailed it very well. But since I only read text, I will wait for the Libra 2 to come back in stock to upgrade my old e-reader (Kobo Aura One). The colour book covers look genuinely nice, but what I'm looking for is that black and white text crispiness and that very white background. Again, thank you for that honest review.
For black and white reading, I agree that the Libra 2 is a better choice. These new color devices are awesome, but aren’t needed for most people. The crispness isn’t quite at parity yet.
Die Libra 2 has also a worse battery and chipset.... therefore, if you want current tech in BW, you need to buy the clara BW (which doesn't have the the dualcore processor). Somehow even POcketbook is focussing more on colour.... Seems to be the new normal.
I've waited almost 2 years for amazon to come up with a mini Scribe, waterproof, with page-turn-buttons and the ability to write directly into the books... colour is not even that important to me. This is exactly what they should have done! So now i'll switch from Kindle to Kobo (not completely because of my very large kindle library) and see if it will do for me. Great Video!
I always love Kobo. The fact that Kobo can use Epub out of the box and not have to use Calibre is the good. I don't like how Amazon is stingy when it comes to their ecosystem
Colours are definitely useful to me. I highlight a lot. On the app, I use different colours for different themes. So I love that it's now available on the ereader.

Thanks for this review. Thanks for showing it side by side with the Libra 2. I agree with you about the color e-ink. Especially after seeing this comparison. I don't read mangas. For me it would just be to see the book covers in colors. For me personally it's probably better to stick to the regular devices for now.
As a person who loves to annotate IN books, this is great for me. Annotating is a huge part of the experience and I enjoy the colors. Being able to read manga in color on my e reader will be so amazing. The Kindle scribe was such an overpriced disappointment, but I’m okay with keeping it for Kindle Unlimited. For now.
My last e-reader was the Kobo Clara (earlier generation) and right now I'm stumped... not sure if I should get the new Kobo Clara BW, Libra Colour or Clara Colour... aaargh. I love the idea of having an e-reader with a color screen and possibly reading comics on the Libra Colour but the lower contrast and dimmer screen is freaking me out a bit.
Until color Eink uses cyan, magenta, yellow subtractive color particles; you won’t get true color and clarity. CMYK subtractive color, like real print, you will get over 20,000+ colors instead of washed out dull 4000 colors. The tech is not there yet.
New subscriber here and a new member of the Presently Reading community. Thank you for an articulate presentation without a lot of filler words. I have owned nearly every Kindle since they first came out, with the exception of the Voyager and the Scribe. I have over 1,000 books on my Kindle and it would take forever to transfer them one by one to the Kobo. I read mostly history so color isn’t imperative but it would be helpful for reading maps, charts and photo’s. (I usually pull out my 2018 iPad when I run across a map, etc. that needs to be in color or in a larger size.) The 150 dpi when using color is a deal breaker for me. Fingers crossed that Amazon finally comes out with a color version of the Kindle. Nice to see that you have some Ryan Holliday books in your collection.
I got one of these for my birthday recently. I can see how you might think it feels cheap, given you might expect metal or at least a stiffer plastic for this price. I kind of felt that way, too, until I got it in a case. A good case makes it feel more solid. There are two things that I think are important to point out: 1) You aren't limited to the Kobo stylus if you want to write. You can use any Microsoft Surface-compatible stylus. The one I have cost less than $30. The erasing procedure involves a button instead of the back of the pen, which is a bit less convenient, but to save $40, it definitely works. 2) Be warned that if you use the stylus a lot, it'll drain the hell out of your battery. Writing is a much more intense activity than reading. In general, I think the biggest negative about the Kobo Libra Colour is the battery. You can't expect Paperwhite battery life out of it. But then again, it's doing a lot more than a Paperwhite does. All in all, though, I love it. it's color, and you can write on it. It's part Scribe, part Colorsoft, and les expensive than either one.
I received my Libra Colour today, and when I upgrade from a 2019 device I must say that the speed of the thing is an Enormous asset, and you also pointed this out. The speed of making highlights and doing other things with the device is great. The colour aspect is not that important for me, but it still will be handy for magazines and comics. Thanks for an indepth review!
I notice the color libra offers the ability to play Kobo Audio Books. I wonder if it can play other audio books I download from Libby or Hoopla via my local library. I already have a 1 year old black and white eReader from Kobo but of course it does not offer playing such audio books so I listen to them on my cell phone. Instead of the new color Libra, I wonder if a cheap android tablet would offer more function at equal or less price than the Libra to play my borrowed audio books? GREAT VIDEOS... thanks!!!
Very excited to have just joined the book club! I love all kinds of non-fiction, but especially anything about dinosaurs (no, I'm not a 10-year-old boy) and nature. I have confirmed that I am a human, which is true, as far as you know. Thanks for your hard work on helping us all read more and get more done!
I’m really wanting this for school. Taking notes and having different color highlights on text books would be awesome but part of me wants to wait for the Amazon one. I’m so torn
As I already have the Libra 2 and the Elipsa 2e, feature wise I feel covered on all important bases already. Color feels like a novelty whose effect wears off really quickly. At the end of the day, i spend 99.9% of my time on an e-reader reading black and white text. I'm looking forward to Kobo releasing a Libra BW with an upgraded CPU and the Carta 1300 display, that would be something I would consider buying. Color eink technology probably has some use cases where its useful, but i feel like reading books isnt really one of them.
College student here, and the ability to highlight in color is a GAME CHANGER. However, I’m waiting until the color e-ink screen comes to the Elipsa because I need the bigger screen to read textbooks.
Thanks for your review veeray🙏🏽 I'm debating still on whether to buy this device or not as a comic book fan but I do agree with your "vibe of ereading" comment. Made me pause and reflect
Good review. Colour e-ink is definitely progressing but I haven't got a need for it. Good to hear this Libra is speedy too. The only nit pick I have with my Kobo Clara 2e is that it's a bit sluggish loading compared to my Kindle Paper White.
New subbie here. I love the Kindle Oasis, but after the new Kindle e-reader line up, I have to accept it’s not coming back. I’m trying to get used to the idea of leaving the Kindle universe. :-)
Thanks, you just saved me some money. I will still think about it but with a more informed mind. I currently have a Clara HD, and the only real problem that I have is that it struggles with PDF, and images on other formats are all stretched up. Does the Libra 2 or color have to fix this?
Did you get the Libra Color? If so, how do you like it? I just ordered one and cannot wait. I was doing so much research and comparison with the Elipsa SE, Kindle Scribe, Boox, Supernote....but I was glad to decide the Libra Color because I wanted reading first and writing as a bonus. Plus it wasn't $300+. The color looks decent too, at least to me.
Thank you for the review! Just a quick question: Can you sort the highlighted sentences by colour when you look at the annotations? E.g. only display red highlights if I have a colour coding system
Hi there, I agree with you about the page turn buttons. I have had a previous Cobra Libra and gave it away as the buttons were too annoying and difficult to push with arthritis in my hands. I’m more interested in a reader with comfort and the ability to push buttons without thinking about it rather than colour and fancy nonsense. Dee
I purchased this as an upgrade to my Sage. The Sage is incredible, but the writing can be laggy. Constantly requires me to refresh to see what I’ve written. The battery is too small and the processor too powerful for the battery to keep up properly. I understand the design choice, but it’s a poor tradeoff in my eyes. The Libra Colour having a *much* bigger battery with the same handwriting capabilities was what sold me. The processor having a slightly higher speed but curtailed to a dual core was a smarter decision, I feel. It won’t stress the battery as much, which should improve performance gains. I look forward to it! (Also, being in color means I can read comics more easily; I don’t mind physical copies, but I worry about damaging them and my hands have limited dexterity)
I would still prefer libra 2, but they hve discontinued the supply in my country. So i had to go for libra colour like it or not. I like the bw crisp of libra 2
Well done. I agree with you, if you only read books, colour is a distraction and not worth. I never annotate anything during my readings. You didn't mention also how dull the colours are. It is so evident compare to a regular tablet (Android/Ipad) which display millions of colours. I guest we'll have to wait for kaleido 4 or 5 to have saturated colours integration, no premium price and high contrast.
This is great! Just discovered this channel after deciding to buy a kobo. I've been reading some very old Sikh history books that aren't in print anymore on my cell phone and it's time to get a e reader! Your reviews are great and are helping me narrow down my search. Any thoughts on a refurbished Kobo ? They are available on the website.
Great review! Sadly I just bought a Libra2 a couple of months ago, after using the Kobo app on my iPad for many years. I would really have enjoyed my book covers in colour! Also the increased speed as I do find the Kobo a bit slow.
If they integrate the annotation system the same way they did on the scribe, I’m not interested. It sucked not being able to write directly on the page, hopefully they change this!
@@giak890you’d think the Scribe would have come out with that natively it confuses me why they didn’t and now even only certain books can be marked up, ridiculous 🙄
I had the chance to look at one of these in person the other day and I am disappointed as well with the build quality. I also noticed that the demo model, which had only been out for two days, already had a number of scratches in the plastic. I understand that a number of people will put these in cases, but the cheap plastic feel really takes away from the overall quality of the device
I can’t decide if I should wait for the next kindle or go for this one!! It seems like Kobo gives you much more freedom with side loading than kindle. I want to purchase my very first e-reader but I can’t decide what to go for! Which would you pick?
In my experience, the Kindle Paperwhite is terrific and offers a wonderful software experience. I personally haven't used the Kobo devices, but many people do generally like them. The Kindles are the most popular E-readers. I would watch a lot of RUclips videos and see what people say about them, what they prefer, and why. There are always pros and cons to any device. But in the end, you won't end up with a bad device. Both brands offer solid products.
If you live in America, Kindle tends to be the more popular opinion. Kobo is more popular for folks who live in other countries. It also works better with public libraries if that’s important to you. It’s all personal preference at the end of the day!
I live in America, own both Kindle Oasis 2 and Kobo Sage, as well as several previous Kobos. I prefer reading on my Kobos. Quicker to wake, quicker bookmarking, quicker front light adjustment, more margin size adjustments available, more font sizes, it's the best for eye comfort! And an 8" screen is glorious! Feels so much like reading a print book!
They both get the job done, really the only BIG factor is how you get your books. Kindle has a way better store with basically everything, but Kobo can connect to libraries and sideloading is simpler. Other than that, if you’re still stuck I would recommend looking at how they look and which design appeals to you, and the UI, cases/covers, etc. It matters a lot since your ereader is going to last years, so like a car really sometimes it’s just about how it looks and feels in the end over everything. I got a Kobo Libra for the buttons, better UI imo, and my preference for the feel (the Kindle PW felt a little too much like an iPad vs the Libra)
👍🇪🇦 Agradezco tu revisión de este Kobo Libra Color. Informó que he leído que las notas en tus libros no son compatibles de un Kobo a otro. Ruego verificar para los que toman muchas notas. 👍👏👏👏🤗🤗👋👋
Great review, but I have to disagree on the notion of color being superfluous to the reading experience. It makes me more excited to open my eReader and see a color book cover. It makes shopping for new books on the eReader much more engaging in color. And having different highlighting colors seems like a great thing to have, even if I don't currently highlight, ever - but that could change with this device. It sounds like a great upgrade from my Oasis. I just hope the buttons work better for my unit than yours. If not... it goes back. Buttons are a big part of the experience, for me. But I do believe your unit may be defective. I hope.
It is nice that Kobo has finally created a usable reader with a fast and usable highlighting function. Sadly, after years of patience, I decided to switch to a Kindle Paperwhite and a Supernote A6X2: the last reader I bought from Kobo was the Clara 2E, and it was nearly impossible to highlight texts on it as it was too slow. Colour screen? I do not need it when I read a book supposedly made of black characters on a white background.
Thanks for the excellent review! Was wondering if you would advise getting the Libra 2 over this if I don’t read any comics or plan to use the notebook feature? Thanks
I received it a couple of days ago,the color filter is definitely visible, and I remain to see if it is something that bothers me after a while or not.
Libra Colour doesn't use carta 1300. That's Clara BW. Libra and Clara Colour uses Kaleido 3. The reason it feels quicker than libra 2 is because it uses Dual core 2.0 GHz processor. Libra 2 used 1.0 GHz processor .
@@Maneetpaul I don't think so. That was likely misinformation that got amplified by word of mouth. Kaleido 3 doesn't use Carta 1300, if things had changed and it did, you'd think E Ink would let us know!
So I'm looking for an ereader that comfortably supports EPUB and PDF files without having to go through workarounds. More accurately, I want to TRANSFER those files from my PC to the reader. Is this what you'd recommend?
Thanks for a great review. Does this have an internet browser so I can read my pdfs in say something like Evernote? And are books that can be read only from Kobo or can I read my Kindle books?
I've only ever owned a non-backlit Kindle but gave it away years ago. I'm ready to get back into an e-reader and I'm concerned about the darker screen. What's the battery life like when compared to the BW Kobo? Do you always use the backlight when reading, even on the BW model?
Hi, Maneet. I'm in Canada, and thinking about moving from Kindle (Scribe and Paperwhite) to Kobo. What do you think about the Sage vs Libra Colour? I'm committed to stylus input for highlighting and annotating, but not overly concerned about colour vs B&W. I wear glasses, so 8" vs 7" is a plus. Also, I see that the Sage has a quad core processor- how does it's performance in terms of ghosting, page turn and stylus lag compare to the LC, which has a slower CPU but newer firmware and the faster Carta 1300 panel?
Never mind... Been reading a lot of negative comments about battery life with the Sage, and also discovered that it hasn't received a firmware update since April 2023. Doesn't seem like it gets a lot of love from users, or from Kobo these days. Add the fact that it won't be covered under the new repairability options, and the Libra Colour starts looking more and more attractive.
I don't think I have ever felt the need to take notes while reading. I just like to read. Guess I will stick to my kindle voyage. It is still a great device apart from the micro usb charging 🙂
Great video, thank you! A question for you, because I have the color on preorder - for b&w book reading as primary use case, would you get the Libra 2 over the Color?
That’s a hard choice. The color tech is cool and using a newer device is usually preferred. But I will say that the Libra 2 is sharper and feels more comfortable for black and white reading. I haven’t tested it yet, but the new Clara BW will be a great option for a lot of people.
@@Maneetpaulisn’t the older Clara and Libra 2 discontinued and replaced with the colour? I thought that was the case cos when I go to Rakuten’s website they’ve got the Libra 2 and Clara OG as sold out.
Hi all, I'm just curious whether other stylus (microsoft surface pen or etc) would work with the Libra? I've already placed my order for Libra, but am hesitant to buy the stylus due to the price.
I'm only interested in reading books on ereaders, in this device without wifi how many days does such a large battery last? the problem with kobo is that when the battery dies you don't know how to change it
The 2E is GREAT. The color is a cool feature, but I promise it’s a probably not worth the upgrade unless you read graphic novels. That’s why I titled the video “manage expectations”. It seems to be getting a little over hyped.
Hey Maneetpaul! Can you mark up side loaded books and pdfs or only books purchased from kobo? Also I read about a convert handwriting to text feature but it looks like I’m that doesn’t work in your video. Thanks for the review!
I read that wacom stylus don't work on the Kobo Libra Colour. Is the Kobo stylus possibly the only stylus that would work on it? I want a white one to match my white Kobo

Thank you for the review! Just a quick question: Can you sort the highlighted sentences by colour when you look at the annotations? E.g. only display red highlights if I have a colour coding system
Can you write on sideloaded books or library books?
Your videos are the best. You are my "go to" for all things e-reader related. Take care!
Hi! Thanks for your review! So, you can't mark up locally imported documents? Only Kobo books?
So can you annotate epub files as well with the stylus or does it only work with kobos own books?
I’m interested to know as well 😊
Great review. I’m very tempted by one of these
I hope it will come a uppdated Libra BW whit dual core and carta 1300
In kindle appz we can select a word and dictionary pops up. Is a similar feature available in kobo??
Please answer
Great review! Sadly I just bought a Libra2 a couple of months ago, after using the Kobo app on my iPad for many years. I would really have enjoyed my book covers in colour! Also the increased speed as I do find the Kobo a bit slow.
FWIW Microsoft Surface stylii work too. They aren't cheap either but some people may have those collecting dust in a drawer and can repurpose them.
Good review - thank you. I just know I’ll buy this and then decide the new Kindle is better when it comes out and have regrets.😅
If they integrate the annotation system the same way they did on the scribe, I’m not interested. It sucked not being able to write directly on the page, hopefully they change this!
It’s always hard to predict what else might come out. Right now, this thing is great! Haha
@@giak890you’d think the Scribe would have come out with that natively it confuses me why they didn’t and now even only certain books can be marked up, ridiculous 🙄
What's the battery life like with the new processor? Is it as short as in the Kobo Sage? Thanks.
Ich habe beide. Kindle Oasis lädt halt binnen Sekunden das Buch herunter. Finde beide gut.
Thanks for the review. Please review Bigme B751c android ereader. A seven inch color ereader with note taking and split screen technology.
It uses both from my understanding. It doesn't say e-ink carta 1300 on the website, but it was confirmed by a news report that I read directly by Kobo
I should have mentioned the processor though, good call out on that, thanks!
I have used kobo for years, and yes it is very easy to read pub and pdf files by juts transferrring
Thanks for a great review. Does this have an internet browser so I can read my pdfs in say something like Evernote? And are books that can be read only from Kobo or can I read my Kindle books?
I really like your videos. They are very in depth. 😊
Hey everyone! Can you listen to audiobooks while having the text displayed on the screen, provided you're subscribed to both audio and e-books?
I've only ever owned a non-backlit Kindle but gave it away years ago. I'm ready to get back into an e-reader and I'm concerned about the darker screen.
What's the battery life like when compared to the BW Kobo? Do you always use the backlight when reading, even on the BW model?
Love the wall poster ❤
What sort of OS does Kobo use for its eReaders? Is it something homebrewed? I hope it's not Android
1. Is there any way to export annotations like KIndle does by sharing them in an email to me?
Thanks for review
I haven't decided yet, do you think is that worth to upgrade from libra H2O?
At a glance, you looked shirtless in the thumbnail and I was like “alright thirst trap, get you some”
HELP LMAO 😭😭
I think the build quality is great! all of the Kindles are plastic, so I don't understand why you think the quality of the build is not good.
Does this substitute the kindle scribe? I am interested in writing a lot
Will there be a B&W Libra 3?
I wonder, which e-reader is best for PDF files?
can you compare boox tab mini c and kobo libra color?
You didn't mention Overwatch and borrowing library books.
Do you recommend an upgrade if you have a kobo libra 2?
Is it really not possible to synchronize our highlights on Readwise?
Would you go back to black and white Kindles given the color screen is so impressive and the black and white is highly resoluted 300ppi anyway?
Hi all, I'm just curious whether other stylus (microsoft surface pen or etc) would work with the Libra? I've already placed my order for Libra, but am hesitant to buy the stylus due to the price.
I’m still watching the video so I’m sorry if you answered this already, but do you prefer this or the Kobo Clara color?
I have similar thoughts about both. I think it comes down to color vs black and white. Currently, I’d still prefer a black and white ereader
The best review. Thank you so much!
Compared to the Libra 2 I can see a bit difference in text sharpness in black and white… is this normal?
How does this compare to Libra 2?
Excellent review, thanks .
Thank you for the honest review!
I'm only interested in reading books on ereaders, in this device without wifi how many days does such a large battery last? the problem with kobo is that when the battery dies you don't know how to change it
I just got a Clara 2e a couple months ago. I would’ve gotten a colored version if available at the time 😢 but I know that’s not important
Same! I’m seriously considering selling mine online and buying the new one…
I know it’s it important but I want it so, so bad!
The 2E is GREAT. The color is a cool feature, but I promise it’s a probably not worth the upgrade unless you read graphic novels. That’s why I titled the video “manage expectations”. It seems to be getting a little over hyped.
Can you annotate side loaded books and documents?
@Maneetpaul would also love to know this
Hey Maneetpaul!
