Unfortunately l returned my Kobo Libra Colour after one day because reading outside in sunshine, the screen appears unacceptably dim even when the built in frontlight is set to 100%, which is a dealbreaker for me. Inside the house, the screen brightness can be made acceptable by use of the frontlight but outside it cannot, a feature b&w ereaders are exceptionally good at. I really looked into it to replace/upgrade from my 7 year old kindle Oasis with USB type C and color. I fell in love with page turning buttons and I can't understand why Amazon ditched the concept since 2019. I think kobo might be the best software alternative to the kindle universe, but ended with the new Pocketbook Era Color instead. I think a direct comparison between the Oasis would be interesting for many people.

Thanks for the review! May I ask after you annotate the book in a particular orientation and font/size, then if you rotate, or change the font and size, will the annotation still be displayed?
they won't be displayed when u rotate the screen landscape if you annotated while it was in portrait mode but the kobo will still have an icon on the side as a notification that a markup was done on the page, you can tap on it and it will pop up a window that will show the page in portrait mode with your annotations :)
As someone who holds his books and ereaders in his left hand, I ask: if you rotate the Kobo 180° from the way that you normally do (with the buttons on the left), will the screen rotate to be rightside up? No one has mentioned this one way or the other in any review that I’ve seen.
Rumors are there will be a color Kindle next year. But it will use a different eink technology that won't sacrifice resolution for color like Kaleido 3 does
@@BlueFins7 if the rumors are correct, it shouldn't have a downgrade when displaying color. It'll use Gallery instead of Kaleido. The former has different colored particles to display colors, whereas Kaleido (which has reduced color ppi) uses light filters.

What happened to the other four? :) Also, while the official stylus is expensive, the device (from what I've read) works with Microsoft Surface-supported pens, so you can get a stylus for it for about $26 from Amazon.

How does annotation with a stylus compare between the Kobo Sage and Libra Colour? Colour is not a must-have for me. My eyes are nearly 70 years old, so the 8" Sage panel is a plus. Stylus input is also a must, and I'm wondering whether the faster Carta 1300 display on the LC makes up for the slower dual-core processor vs the Quad core cpu on the Sage. Last but not least, what is the difference between the Sage's Stylus vs the Stylus 2?
Phones or tablets have backlights that shine the light directly into your eyes. The Kindle Paperwhite uses front lights that shine onto the screen instead, which is better for your eyes. I am curious how about Kobo devices?

I have seen on Reddit forums that the stylus from the surface laptop works on the device since it is very similar even the eraser on the bottom, so any alternative to the surface stylus should work
I have a slightly silly question, if i were to get the clear case would i still be able to snap the pen on the side? or will the cover not let it do that?
No that's not a silly question I did order the clear case to come with mine but I was wondering the same thing I'm hoping that you can but I won't know till I get it
Yes I will be glad to let you know the only problem is I didn't order the pen but I did order the clear case so I'll put a magnet on the outside of the clear case on the edge and see if it magnetizes if that helps you
@@debbiemillin8971 hi Debbie! I just found out that the case doesn't have a designated space for the pen but it does attach magnetically although not as strong, still does the job 🙂
The 'brightness problem' is a general problem with all color screens since the added color layer makes the b&w layer behind it harder to see and therefore needs more light to get to the same viewing experience as with a pure b&w screen. It should be especially noticable if you have two devices with the same carta 1300 screen next to one another where one is pure b&w and the other also has color. The Kobo Clara has both options available. For someone who does videos it might be a good chance to compare the screens and get some views on RUclips. For all people who are here searching for the review of the new Tolino, which is the brand Kobo uses in Germany/Austria: Sobald die Geräte im Thalia verfügbar sind können wir uns vor Ort ein Bild von den Bildschirmen machen und müssen keine Vergleichsvideos kucken :)
I've always had kindle but im sooo interested in moving to kobo. I understand i cannot transfer ebooks i bought from amazon but how about the audiobooks from audible? If i downloaded the audiobooks and sideloaded them, will the play all the same with kobo?
Does this Ebookreader support text-to-speech function? There is a very similar ebookreader from pocketbook, the era color, which supports TTS and is in the same price range and nearly same specs ;-)
You said you wished the screen got brihjter but you didn't show what it looks like. I dont usually turn mt brightness highwr than 10% on my kobo libra or sage
Lol price. My onyx boox note air 3c which is a 10.3" screen was $500 then I bought a case for $30 and a extra pen for $50. I still would rather have that. But I loved my Kobo h20 and I'm so happy they put out a color model. Too bad it was a month after I bought my boox. But I wouldn't take that purchase back I love my bigger screen cause I do journal on it.
I can set the brightness to 0 in kindle basic and read the text in well-lit room. But when I turn off light in my room, I set brightness to 8 or 9. How does this work in kobo colour? Can I read with the brightness set to 0?
Can I be a little jealous? I he been a Kobo user for like 10 years. My first was a Kobo Aura (still working by the way, now my dad uses it) and now I own a Kobo Libra H2O. I love it and seeing someone who doesn't even know Kobo being gifted one makes me a little ... why??? give it to meeee, if you know what I mean. Hopefully my Libra H2O will last for years and my next Kobo is going to be even better than this lol. It's not SO different to the one that I own to justify its purchase, even if I do use my kobo a lot and will keep using it/them. Welcome to this ereader universe and thanks for the review by the way
Hi all, I'm just curious whether other stylus (microsoft surface pen or etc) would work with the Libra? I've already placed my order for Libra, but am hesitant to buy the stylus due to the price.
You can, but not all the functions work the same. I orderd the metapen M2 and while it works, the eraser is the highlighter and the side button is the eraser, so if that does not bother you its a decent option for half the price. I personally did not like that it mixed them up.
Hi@@twobabyboyz ! Thank you so much. At least it's a cheaper option as compared to the Kobo stylus. It's retailing at almost a hundred in my country...
Thank you for the review! Im expecting mine on April 30th. Some people in Reddit are claiming that outdoors the screen is unreadable since the frontlight can't negate the sunlight. Can you clarify if that's true?
Oh. Okay, I got to the part where he talked about overall brightness. Generally, the tech behind color eink is a filter of sorts. So everything is dimmer overall compared to black and white. You will need more ambient light to illuminate the device. Works super well outdoors, indoors with minimal light. You will need to turn on the brightness to compensate.
@@NatalieRath Yeah, exactly. I have reacted the same way. But as I've said some people in Reddit are saying that direct sunlight doesn't mitigate the contrast of the Kobo Color which gives me an impression that it's unreadable outdoors. That's the argument I was having with them since I find that to be a ridiculous misinformation
@@NatalieRath They even share side-by-side pics of the Libra Color and regular Libra outdoors at full brightness. It's funny, it's like they think the frontlight works like a backlight. They spread their disappointment with these pics, saying any black and white reader has better contrast than the Kobo Color.
@@brownwallet942 I've seen some of the things people are saying on reddit as well. And from what I'm getting at, it's like they expected it to be like an LCD or a OLED screen. I'm not saying all are saying it in that way, but ya know. I did seen someone else said that there are just people out there that prefer to read at 0% brightness and those who are like that hates bringing up the brightness for any means. So if that doesn't bother you in any way to adjust the brightness then it shouldn't be an issue.🙂
@@Serreree thanks for the reply. I'm definitely ok with using the frontlight. Glowlight feature is a frontlight right so meaning, it won't be necessary to use outdoors when the sun is already providing it more than enough light. Some of those redditors insist that it's unreadable outdoors since the screen is dull. They came to that conclusion by comparing it the regular Libra. I mean sure, the Libra 2 has a whiter page because it doesn't have the extra color filter inside, but to claim it's unreadable outdoors is ridiculous. They're so stubborn and sway people to think this way by showing comparison photos of the Color to the regular one, that anybody who doesn't know the difference between backlight and frontlight would believe them
An impressive device for sure, but it's a shame they chose to give it a 7-inch screen when my old Kobo Forma has an 8-inch screen, which I've got used to. I wouldn't want to go back to a smaller screen.
I don’t know but I’ve always been able to find the book I want. If I couldn’t I’d just get the book from another source as Kobo is open like that. Though I doubt I would ever need to do that as the Kobo store always has the books I want.
Mm. I have the previous libre and the software on that's janky compared to my paperwhite. If it's improved I may purchase one. PS. spelling colour correctly is a bonus 😂😂
If you want to keep buying from those stores then I totally get it. However, if you want to just be able to read what books you do have (specially kindle books) you can do some magic with the program Calibre to get your books from your kindle library, reformat them, and transfer to the kobo.
Everything is "very very cool and fun" but then you also say you don't really use the features (colors outside of covers, annotating or notebooks). Let's be real that for 90% of people colors and pen(in a device this small) is pretty pointless and they could spend an 100 € less. Even if you read graphic novels, reading them with dull colors on such a small device (while the usual graphic novel have a page that's at least 10") isn't really ideal. This is something new (at least for the major brands) and i get it feels cool but in reality you're spending more for something that you probably don't need and actually worsen the quality for normal b/w reading.
Who buys a device like this and only reeds for 30 days? let alone has time to reed during the day when you could get away with the light at no more than 30%? This is a widespread scam in the e-reader world. All manufacturers give the same BS about battery life. They need to be called out more often. I'm not saying the battery life is bad, but I'm willing to bet I could got though it's entire batter in a weekend.
@@Runawayayhe said he had the brightness at only 10% so it doesn't wash out the camera. Maybe there are other reviews out there showing the colour better. Does this substitute the kindle scribe? I am interested in writing a lot
I have many articles in PDF format in my IPad so I wonder if I can use this kobo Libra to read my pdf articles?
I have seen on Reddit forums that the stylus from the surface laptop works on the device since it is very similar even the eraser on the bottom, so any alternative to the surface stylus should work
I have a slightly silly question, if i were to get the clear case would i still be able to snap the pen on the side? or will the cover not let it do that?
No that's not a silly question I did order the clear case to come with mine but I was wondering the same thing I'm hoping that you can but I won't know till I get it
@@debbiemillin8971 thank you so much! Please do let me know once you get it if it's not too much trouble
Yes I will be glad to let you know the only problem is I didn't order the pen but I did order the clear case so I'll put a magnet on the outside of the clear case on the edge and see if it magnetizes if that helps you
@@debbiemillin8971 oh I see! Ok sure, thank you so much! ❤️
@@debbiemillin8971 hi Debbie! I just found out that the case doesn't have a designated space for the pen but it does attach magnetically although not as strong, still does the job 🙂
Can you ONLY annotate ebooks bought through kobo!
This is what I'm wondering, too
I bought a metapen in Amazon and I works with the kobo.
For all people who are here searching for the review of the new Tolino, which is the brand Kobo uses in Germany/Austria:
Sobald die Geräte im Thalia verfügbar sind können wir uns vor Ort ein Bild von den Bildschirmen machen und müssen keine Vergleichsvideos kucken :)
I've always had kindle but im sooo interested in moving to kobo. I understand i cannot transfer ebooks i bought from amazon but how about the audiobooks from audible? If i downloaded the audiobooks and sideloaded them, will the play all the same with kobo?
You can convert your Kindle books to kepub format. I do this all the time.
Great review. I really want a color eReader. Is it the size of the oasis? How is this one outside?
Does this Ebookreader support text-to-speech function? There is a very similar ebookreader from pocketbook, the era color, which supports TTS and is in the same price range and nearly same specs ;-)
You said you wished the screen got brihjter but you didn't show what it looks like. I dont usually turn mt brightness highwr than 10% on my kobo libra or sage
I have a kindle page turner clicking button thing, do those work with kobo also and would it work on this Color Libra ?
Welcome to this ereader universe and thanks for the review by the way
Is it a commercial or review?
Is the on page annotation work with sideloaded Ebooks or only those purchased from Kobo store?
Yes! It works
They're so stubborn and sway people to think this way by showing comparison photos of the Color to the regular one, that anybody who doesn't know the difference between backlight and frontlight would believe them
Does Kobo support the kindle app?
Unfortunately it does not!
@@dylancanread thanks for the info
No. Kobo uses the library service of Libby (formerly Overdrive) especially for people who live outside the United States
Can you annotate on ebooks borrowed from Libby/overdrive?
Can you read Kindle books on a Kobo?
Yes kobo supports the "mobi" format which is what kindle is.
How do you access the preloaded note templates?
An impressive device for sure, but it's a shame they chose to give it a 7-inch screen when my old Kobo Forma has an 8-inch screen, which I've got used to. I wouldn't want to go back to a smaller screen.
would u say the 6 inch screen for Kobo Clara is too small?
can u highlight text without the stylus?
I will wait till the Elipsa has color. These devices now are just too small for note taking and drawing ... etc
I have like 10 B/W e-readers, and bought both the Libra Color and the Clara Color, love the color even if its just showing the book covers!
Hello!, if you can please confirm if it works with Pocket for article reading. Please note that long article reading is also reading.
A big part of the choice of e-reader is the ecosystem. How many books does the Kobo e-book store have compared to Amazon?
I don’t know but I’ve always been able to find the book I want. If I couldn’t I’d just get the book from another source as Kobo is open like that. Though I doubt I would ever need to do that as the Kobo store always has the books I want.
@@mykoc-hx1nx how do the prices on kobo compare to Amazon?
@@mykoc-hx1nx Thanks. :)
Only 24 books?
I'm sure that should be 24000, right?
I hope so... especially if it can do several times that in audiobooks
He added an edit to that portion of the video stating 24,000**
Mm. I have the previous libre and the software on that's janky compared to my paperwhite. If it's improved I may purchase one. PS. spelling colour correctly is a bonus 😂😂
That looks fun, but I would not pay the price since I have a new Kindle Paperwhite.
I have a relatively new Kindle Signature but this is so tempting.
I would get one of these if it could run the kindle and google play books apps. Otherwise it is useless to me.
But you can access Libby, Kindles can’t.
If you want to keep buying from those stores then I totally get it. However, if you want to just be able to read what books you do have (specially kindle books) you can do some magic with the program Calibre to get your books from your kindle library, reformat them, and transfer to the kobo.
@@artemiskit4279 I second this. I do this and am able to read across multiple e-readers all in different ecosystems
I think the boox devices are able to do that but the reading experience isn't amazing. It's been a while since I looked at it but worth researching.
I wish you showed more of how the product works while using it instead of just.. talking about it 😢
Should built in speakers
You said it only holds 24 e-books ?!?!
It holds loads of ebooks.
@@mykoc-hx1nx yes I know but thought to ask as I’m sure he said that.
He did say that, but on screen he corrected it to 24.000 😉
@@AnnEast85 ok I missed that thank you 😎
I was wondering when 32 GB became "whopping" 😂
For e-readers its large since most are 8 or 16 gb
Everything is "very very cool and fun" but then you also say you don't really use the features (colors outside of covers, annotating or notebooks). Let's be real that for 90% of people colors and pen(in a device this small) is pretty pointless and they could spend an 100 € less. Even if you read graphic novels, reading them with dull colors on such a small device (while the usual graphic novel have a page that's at least 10") isn't really ideal. This is something new (at least for the major brands) and i get it feels cool but in reality you're spending more for something that you probably don't need and actually worsen the quality for normal b/w reading.
Colours aside, this looks very responsive.
17 minute review with 40 seconds of showing color. Pointless.
It shows colour throughout the review though?
@@AnnEast85to be fair the colours are so washed out and non existent they kind of look like black and white anyway…
I guess he's proud of his image because the reader is shown in action...4 minutes?
@@Runawayayhe said he had the brightness at only 10% so it doesn't wash out the camera. Maybe there are other reviews out there showing the colour better. (I think at 10% brightness they show up quite well. )
I have the original Kobo when it was first released in I have been waiting ever since for colour. I can't believe it took so lon.
Some of us have other devices and have never used a kobo before so need to know about more things than just the colour.
Less face, more product.
Dylan, why don't you stop showing your face 99% of the time and instead show the device that you're actually reviewing?
This is not a review, this is an advertisement.
He got it free. So a pointless review.
It's not great, and you know it.
For a reader, even a blind man can see that the Kindle basic is enough to let the Kobo in the dust.
For color, use a pad. They are cheaper than the Kobo nowadays, but brilliant colors and bigger display. 😂🤡🤡🤡
Kobo missed the reader part in the equation. Amazon has nothing to fear.
