Unlike what other says that you cant read outside in the sun, i tested it, I can read on it pretty well just like how you read a book. It feels like paper.

    Excellent review. I have the first Libra and it is really perfection in terms of being light weight and easy to hold and easy to change pages with the buttons positioned where they are.
    Unfortunately, writing on smooth glass or glass-like plastic is a huge mistake in the design of many e-ink devices, and this one falls into that category.

      I posted on reddit a few days back calling out these BW fanatics who dismiss Kobo Color for its screen being "too dim". Apparently they want to use the Kobo with literally zero brightness because "using the the frontlight makes it less paperlike". Hahaha i got negative Karmas for calling them vegans of the e-ink technology. 🤣 I reasoned out, how can it be too dim? This reviewer shows the Kobo glowing like a lightbulb. Then this guy said, "great, that something I would NOT want". I replied, well it's not an on and off switch, there's a brightness slider. Meaning you can go as dim and as bright as you would want it to be. My reply still got negative karmas, they're simply unreasonable. I hope this gets out of stock for months and prices on 2nd hand market goes up

    • @filipesilva7778
      @filipesilva7778 5 месяцев назад +3

      If you turn the brightness down to 0% you get a much darker screen than the BW version with the same setting. Every review I have seen on the color version has the backlight on - usually at 30 or more - to compensate for the added color layer. What this means is that under direct sunlight, or with another indirect light source, the BW version will always look brighter without needing light shining straight at you.
      For many, the whole point of having an eInk reader is to avoid backlit panels - you can use your phone or tablet for that!

    • @brownwallet942
      @brownwallet942 5 месяцев назад

      @@filipesilva7778 Wrong! The point of an ebook reader is to have a device that displays your ePub and PDF files to read like paper. Kobo Colour doesn't have a backlight, it is using a FRONTLIGHT and frontlit on an e-reader is like a soft, even glow across the screen, comparable to an ambient room lighting when reading a physical book. No matter if you turn your brightness to max, you can't replicate the screen of your amoled or lcd phone, the same way no matter if you reduce your brightness of your phone or tablet to zero, you can't replicate the screen of an eink reader. So if you put the brightness to zero and you complain that it's dim, don't be a fool cos you have a frontlight! Even Kobo BW has a frontlight, the screen is just brighter than the Color since there is no color filter array, but still on a dark room you still gonna use that frontlight on that thing

    You have not address the screen difference if compared to the Libra 2 with the lights off. I have a Libra 2 and a Boox Note Air 3, that's why I'm curious if the Kobo Libra Colour has a much darker screen vis-a-vis the black and white Libra 2 like all color e-readers?

  • @smithmal01
    @smithmal01 5 месяцев назад +12

    Thanks for this content, it is much appreciated. I love the fact that you got it in black. It really makes the colors pop and reduces the perception of how dark the display is without backlighting due to the inherent darkening that Kaleido 3 technology causes on an e-ink display.
    Couple of questions:
    1. I know you mentioned how good the battery life is for the device, but how about for the stylus?
    2. I'm very impressed with how affordable Kobo kept the Libra Colour however I can't say the same for the stylus. Is it really worth $70 or are their cheaper better options?
    3. Thoughts about the sleep cover? You didn't really discuss the cover and I was wondering if it can be used as a stand.
    4. This is the first I'm hearing that the Libra Colour can only provide sound if playing Kobo audible books. So does that mean if I wanted to side-load some music files that I could listen to in the background it would be a "no-go?"

      Yes it does affect the crispness big time. I received my Libra colour yesterday and compared to my Libra 2 it pales in comparison regarding crispness of text and contrast. The color layer really affects the deep blacks and sharp text you have with the Libra 2. Colour is nice but not at the cost of crispness and deep blacks. Plus, honestly, not necessary since you won’t have any color reading books 99% of the time.

    I appreciate your review as I have viewed and read several others that were critical of the new Kobo Libra Colour mainly complaining about the degradation of the screen compared to the previous model. I had the previous Kobo Libra 2 and found the screen fine but its performance was slugish compared to the Kindle I got to replace it. Unfortunately I disliked the Kindle’s walled garden and wanted something more open. I tried an iPad Mini for 6 months and it was great, the screen was sharp and contrast was higher than e-ink. But, as I did most of my reading at night in the dark, I tired of the brightness of the LCD screen even with night shift, dark mode and brightness at zero! It was still annoying. So I was keen to try the colour Kobo. So I went to a shop and saw one in person and thought, “This is fine and sharp and bright enough without burning out my eyes, what were reviewers complaining about?” I can now read at night using dark mode with a setting of only 2% brightness. It is fine and my eyes enjoy the experience. And the responsiveness of the device is great, very snappy and quick. Much faster than the previous model. I don’t miss the iPad Mini at all. Also I can put whatever epubs I like onto it, not as restrictive as a Kindle. I like reading classic books and most of them are free. So if are hesitant about the new Kobo Libra Colour don’t be.

      I have a Doodroo screen protector on my iPad Mini 6. The protector, besides making writing on it great, removes all the glare and allows a great result when reading with Kindle. You can also set Kindle to use a brown/sepia page colour and lower the screen brightness. It's as good as e-ink, IMHO. Perfect size screen and you don't have to carry a special tablet around just for reading books.
