Flush Screen vs Sunken Screen for e-readers

- Many e-readers have flush screen and bezels and the rest have sunken screens. What is the difference when reading ebooks? This video takes a look at the reading experience and the underlying E Ink technology.
You are doing ebook reader reviews for so long and after all that time you still think that the light is distributed through air. It is not, every front-lit display (flush or sunken) has a layer that distributes the light evenly, that is the reason of light bleed issues on the edges sometimes, because it is not blocked from bouncing back from the shell.
So why the poorer distribution on sunken screen devices like the libra H20 compared with the oasis?

Sunken screens are much more readable. Say it out loud ! Contrast is better and even background lighting is more natural. For example because of that better buy is older paperwhite 3 is better than paperwhite 4. (!)
From what aspect you can judge that paperwhite 3 is better than the 4?
@@heri4313The fact is that you cannot read it in spec sheet. Its not listed there. I own the both models, older and newer one. I put them side to side and I see the difference. The older version have nicer paper feeling when you touch it, is also little bit "creamier" more pleasent to look at. But the drawback is that is not waterproof. But heck... you need to have your e-book waterproof?
Why would you take notes in the corner though? Not a good comparison tbh.
Sunken is better. Flush reflect light because of the plastic or glass layer, which hurt the eyes especially if you are reading on a desk lamp.

I was so concerned to get a sunken over flush(pw4) and man,it's just so much better!
Sadly I suppose it's not the best for dust, however the reflection is so minimal compared to flush!
Also as he said..i can actually tell the lines are "closer" to my eyes
Fun fact, I got both, my old kobo has it sunken, my new one has it flush. And, both are great for reading. I just like that the new one has much nicer night lights, has 7.8" of screen and feels soo good! Ah!
But when it comes to reading... both do their work.
The only reason I chose to go with the basic Kindle instead of the Paperwhite was because I liked the sunken display better. Light reflects ridiculously around that flush glass screen.
You can go with paperwhite 3, it also has sunken screen

I still use my paperwhite 3 and I love reading on it and I don’t want to upgrade yet.
The problem is the bezels in flat screen are more reflective than the sunken screen models
Just because I always want things that don't exist yet: I'd like a flush screen with the texture of a sunken screen, but maintaining the durability and light distribution of the flush screen. Okay, manufacturers, there's something to work on. Oh, and while you're at it, no bezel at all. Just white, paper-like screen to the very edge.
The bezel gives you a place to hold onto though? But maybe an edge to edge screen in three sides, and a handle on the last side.
Why don't you make one your self smart guy 👦
Why do you think a flush screen has more durability?? It doesn't. The whole point of sunken screen is to protect it from daily damage.

I never understood the infatuation with the flush screen. I like having the delineation between the bezel and screen because I rest my thumb on the edge of the bezel and just slightly roll my thumb onto the screen to turn pages. It's the reason I haven't upgraded from my last-gen Paperwhite. Buttons wear out.
We buy these devices to read on them. Readability is the most priority, so sunken screens is way better for the long term. It isn't waterproof, but old books neither.
The kobo libra has a sunken screen and is waterproof.
I hate flushed screen ereaders. I used to own a Kindle Voyage. The text display was the best but there was just too much glare from the flushed screen. I'm back to my Paperwhite 3 and never been happier.

Me too I upgraded from pw2 to pw3 in 2016 and have no regrets and I’m not upgrading yet.
I didn't know about this problem until I get the paperwhite 5. So sad that my pw2 make my eyes feel more comfortable. I try 2 weeks to try to convince myself that pw5 is not bad. But no matter how I try in all kind of reading condition. My pw2 always win.....
What about non-capacitive sunken displays like the Nook? They have the best readability out of all although the touch experience isn’t as nice as capacitive screens.
I've owned the newest oasis for a bit and it has the best backlight period. however, i sold it and got a libra h2o, as the glass on ereaders is noticeably less clear to me. the libra is like removing a slight blur on the oasis screen and mine has a very good backlight still.
i just got a libra 2 and the screen is even better! until they make a glass layer that is less interference in sticking with non glass. to each his own, but the difference, while not obvious side by side, is obvious when reading a while....
I have the exact same experience. I switched from Oasis 3 to Libra 2 and it’s so much better. Also Oasis 3 gave me headaches. The glass layer made it more blurry and it always felt like I needed stronger glasses, I really tried to focus on the text and after couple of hours of reading I got a headache. That never happens with Libra 2.
@@fxaman i love my libra 2 so much, but oasis would be superb if they just removed the glass... i get the benefits, but it's sad that they're almost all glass now.

The screen on my Kobo Glo HD (sunken screen, IR touch) has better contrast than my Kobo Aura One.
That is true. It's because there is no capacitive touch layer. If there is no Light layer... The contrast is even better.
Just occurred to me... That if you knew what an IR touch was... You probably already knew why it looked better.
@@jayvansickle7607 yep ;) i know that is why. But the aura one also does more dithering and sometimes you get bright spots on images with dark backgrounds.
Flat ✅ The problem with IR-based (sunken) screens is _anything_ can trigger a page turn or button press. Sometimes a button on my shirt or a blade of grass will trigger this, and I have to go back and forth trying to find my page. Capacitive should only respond to touch from a finger (but a few other things trigger it too.
Access to the corners seems like such a petty negative when you're criticising a device that is purely for reading, not note drawing. I cannot think of any scenario when you would even need to get in there because there's always some degree of margin.
I have read on my gfs Kindle 10 series not flush compared to my Kindle Paperwhite 4 and i felt no major difference.
When I was growing up we either read books in the shade outside or with a candle...
We were spoilt for choice.

This really helps explain why my eyes prefer the kindle oasis so much, even compared to the newest paperwhite. It’s subtle but the even distribution of the light makes it so much easier on the eyes.

Flush screen easier to keep clean, sunk in screens are harder to clean, and hard to get dust out of the corners

The only advantage of flat screens have is that the light that comes from the bottom is better distributed in a glass screen than through air (sunken screen). 4:20
That´s the reason I will consider to buy an ebook with flat screen rather than a sunken one.

water resistant, yes, there are readers with ip x7/8 water resistance that have sunken screen, but anyway keep your reader away from water

Prefer the screen to be lower than the bezel personally, anything to help protect the screen from damage.
the sunken screens are actually much easier to damage - the reason being the flush screens have a glass layer protecting them, the sunken screens only have the ereader screen itself which is very soft.

@@justmyusername9209 not always, a glass if it fall on the ground on a hard surface it can brake, the plastic won't break, the glass is scratch resistant but can shatter more easily. That's why I think gorilla glass is not the best thing contrary to what you may hear, phone who didn't have gorilla didn't shatter or break, they got scratch though but you still could use them if they fall on the ground. They are pros and cons but I would choose durability every time, long term wise gorilla glass on all those new smartphone is a stupid choice.
I like Sunken cause its noticeable by feel on the hand in the dark.
I chose to go the "I have no idea this is a thing, just give me a reasonable reader" route.

Yes, comfort for reading is key. Which is why no one should buy flushed screens and they’re more blurry, glary and reflect light.
