  • The Kobo Libra and Kindle Oasis 3 have have the same asymmetrical design and have manual page turn buttons. This comparison takes a look at the hardware, software, UI, e-reading experience for ebooks and PDF files. We also look at the front-lit display and Amber LED lights for nighttime reading.

    These two devices represent the latest offerings from each company.
    These are both the only 7" devices on the market. The 7" screen size has not been used all that much but these two really make the most of it.
    Check out how they stack up against each other.

    I have the Libra, and since its my first ebook reader ever, im blown away by the screen and how "real" it feels to read on it as paper. Also its very light, but Im sure the Kindle oasis justifies its price. Luckily I also only read english books as opposed to my native tongue, to the shop is OK tho I reckon its hard for other scandinavians with Kobo. Plugging it in to the computer is great however, simple drag and drop of epubs and the Kobo recognizes it as soon as i plug it out from the computer. Great buy for me so far!

    None of the Amazon Kindle readers can render an eBook file in the more common and open .epub format. They're limited to Amazon's proprietary Kindle format. So buying the Oasis is like buying a digital music player that can't play .mp3 files. Crazy! For nearly $100 less, the Kobo Libra will render more formats of eBook files, including .epub.
    It is disappointing because the Amazon book-purchase ecosystem is convenient. But sideloading books is not, and if your books are not in the proprietary Amazon Kindle format, you are out of luck unless you're willing to waste your time running "conversions" on a PC before you load the book onto the Oasis. I'm not willing to waste my time doing that, so the Kobo is hands-down a better device for me.

    • @christopher1800
      @christopher1800 4 года назад +9

      When using Callibre to keep all your books ‘in one place’, you don’t have to worry about conversion because Callibre does all the work for you. Sideloading is as easy as with any Kobo device. That being said, I don’t like the closed ecosystem either.

    Being able to email documents to a kindle is a huge pro and not one I could easily do without. I keep seeing a lot about how it’s not easy to load books onto the kindle but I’ve never had any issues with it and I love being able to email and convert PDFs to it all in one go. I also really like the text predictor when writing notes. I am looking to upgrade to the oasis soon and I keep trying to see if I should switch to kobo, but nothing I’ve found makes it sound more desirable to me (besides the not giving money to Amazon part)
    ETA I’m also in USA, if I lived anywhere else I would go with Kobo b/c of the library issue. As it is now, it’s super easy for me to get library books on the kindle.

      This is SUCH an underrated feature that saves me SO much time without needing to plug it into a computer every time I need new books. I don’t live in the US so we don’t have libraries that offer Overdrive so I can’t justify to switch to a Kobo either. If I had that feature, I’d definitely switch but if I need to plug my e-reader to a computer just whenever I need new books, I don’t think it’s worth it 🥺 tho having a white e-reader is certainly tempting LOL
