I loved her character on "The Beverly Hillbillies"! She was such a little spitfire!😂 So proud of her Southern mountain heritage. I swear, if they'd have let her loose during the Civil War, I think she would've singlehandedly carried the South to victory, lol!
My favorite scene in Beverly Hillbillies was Jed standing outside looking into the camera & saying I don't know who's more Ornery! The Donkey or Granny! Camera pans out & Granny is face to face with the donkey having a stare down. Priceless! 🤣👏👏👏
"Nicky Stop" is actually the only line in the movie that I remember. All these decades and I didn't know it was Granny who delivered that line until just now.
Me to. My uncle Tommy told us to watch it on tv in about 1965 as I recall. I was 11 or 12 and we did. He went to Vietnam right after that. Now everytime i see it I think of him.
I had this movie in colour and I saw both movies in black and white too as if my mother was alive I would have taken it to my mother to see this movie DVD called Mighty Joe Young as the whole movie DVD was brilliant as I am dedicating this movie DVD to my old school friends who are both sisters as I hope to see them both again very soon to Chris and Hester from Billyxxxxx
Many times while watching Mighty Joe Young, I would crack up when the camera dollied to the Southern Belle exclaiming "Lions are just darlin'! Ah simply luuv them!!", while totally unaware that I was laughing at a younger Irene Ryan !
Someone told me that granny was once pretty before she became old.....i didnt believe them and thats what brought me here......they were right....she was pretty!
I saw her in a movie with Kirk Douglas and only knew she'd appear because I saw her name in the opening credits. This should be interesting, I thought, as I had never seen her in anything else. I had to 'deduce' who was her because she was the tiniest woman appearing on the screen. She was close to this depiction here, tho a bit more subdued. She was an absolute chameleon.
She was the Paganini of the rubber face 0:24 to 0:26 from glowing with enthusiasm to fascination & fear .... to 0:28 coquettish -- even squeezing in a massive lower lip quiver along the way.
The guy next to the guy Irene Ryan is with looks like "Inspector Henderson" Robert Shayne from the 50's TB Show The Adventures of Superman. Again, I'm not saying it's him, I'm just saying the Actor looks like him.
Back then ladies talk to men at nightclubs! The good old days of courtship! Now, they are completely separate! Ladies group together and dance together, same with the men! LOL!
Granny was such a character. It's hard to believe she was only acting.

I hated that screechy voice of hers!!!

CAREFUL...SHE MAY COME BACK TO HAUNT YOU!!!
@@catman8965 I'm real scared.
That sultry voiced femme fatale that blows smoke at the guy ❤️

It’s fun to see them early in their career

Just learned this, myself!
Me too! Lol 😂 👴🏻👵👧
She wa a excellent actress
I'm 68 now but I remember watching M.J.Y. when I was a kid.

Wonderful film!
I love Irene. No matter how young she really was she always looked like an old woman.
only somebody who has shit for brains would make such an unflattering comment, RIP Irene Ryan.
She was 47 in 1949
"You were old when I was a kid. Now I'm old and you're still old !"
@@gregrak9389 Queen, you should know.
@@robertgarriott5958
In 1947 that would be considered "old"/older
Average life span then 69
For me "old/older"....is like 85
Love 👵Granny! She's beautiful!
Watching this clip, Irene Ryan (RIP) reminds me of SNL's Heidi Gardner, another pretty and funny lady:)
She was a good actress nobody can compare to her but no one and never will either.
There always has to be a comment, like this one, that goes overboard, in every video comment section when describing a person, place or thing.
Cool 😎 i never knew that was the women from Beverly Hillbillies! Lol 😂 🕺💃🏻👯🚶🙆🏻👴🏻👵👧👨🤠
I'll be damned never knew that
Thanks for sharing.
She’s adorable!!!!

This was on METV a few weeks ago. I never recognized her until they pointed her out. Her voice isn't the same either
Granny changed so much as she aged. My mom told me that when she got old, she didn't recognize the women looking back at her in the mirror.
We all get old , if we are lucky
This was 12 years before the Beverly Hillbillies started and then add 9 years to that.
Nope we do/did , BUT WE ALL WANT TO SEE US COME BACK A LITTLE /or a lot to our PEAK
Actually she wasn't really that old when she was on the Beverly Hillbillies. They used makeup to age her up a bit.
I recognize the woman in the mirror. She looks like my grandmother.
Knew her, she lived at Clark Lake Michigan.
That's surreal. 😉
"AAAAHHHH JEHHD!!!" "Whets the madder Granny?!" "JED!!! I JUST HAD A NIGHTMARE I WAS A FLOOZY IN AH BAR WITH LIONS!!!"
1949 is only 13 years before the BHs started
Granny was always sooo funny . But she was quite the looker too very pretty young woman rip
Your remark made me do a Google image search, & I was STUNNED- she was quite a 'LOOKER' back in the day!!
Amazing career she had ! Good find on this one.
She was 47 when this film came out.
How cool seeing her young!
Funny thing is she played Buddy Ebsen's mother inlaw but she was only 6 years older than him.
In real life Irene was nothing like Granny, it was all an act, of course. She did a fine job.
OMG. Planned to watch this tommorrow. Always wondered who that was with that voice. Love Irene!
"Nicky... stop!!!"
Watch her in "Happiest Girl in Town." She looks pretty good. She reminds me of Penny Singleton in her early years.
She was really pretty outside of her granny makeup.
I want a hug from granny
I JUST COULD NEVER IMAGINE HER AS A YOUNG WOMAN. THIS IS 1949 GRANNY WAS ON IN 1969 AND TO AROUND EARLY 70's ?? SHE AGED VERY QUICKLY AND VERY MUCH.
Very Good!..
My parents got married in 1949. Rip
Not sure if people commenting about how old Irene Ryan looks in the early days, but she's pushing 50 years old in this clip from 1949
Irene Ryan was born in El Paso, TX in 1902! That would've made her 47 at the time of this film!
Wow I never would have guessed that..cool.
And I don't know how many time I've seen the movie 🍿🎥..granny gota love her...haha
She was cute!
Good catch!
And is that Robert Shayne (Inspector Henderson from Superman) sitting beside Nicky?
And Barbara Stanwick blowing the smoke into the guy's face.
See her young in this RUclips video called "happiest girl in town by irene ryan" (without the quotes)
Civil War movies are great.
Many times while watching Mighty Joe Young, I would crack up when the camera dollied to the Southern Belle exclaiming "Lions are just darlin'! Ah simply luuv them!!", while totally unaware that I was laughing at a younger Irene Ryan !
She was uncredited and you know everybody has to start out somewhere either in a western or a monster movie haha
Yep, that’s her.
Granny was a player from way back when ; She had young guys kissing her hand back then 😆😆😆😆😆
Jeeeeeeeddddd.
I read somewhere that Raymond Bailey (Mr Drysdale) was the oldest actor on the set.
King Kong, 1933
Son of Kong 1933,
Mighty Joe Young 1949.
All had Carl Denim.in them
as the adventurer / showman.
An RKO production.
You can see the resemblance of her then as apposed to when Irene was on the "Beverly Hillbilly's".
Someone told me that granny was once pretty before she became old.....i didnt believe them and thats what brought me here......they were right....she was pretty!
She already about 47 when that movie came out.

She was an absolute chameleon.
(Joe gets out and roars at Irene's characters)
Irene: Now, you mind your manners, or get a whuppin!
So, THAT is how she got the practice, to handle Jethro!
Now go out to the woodshed and cut me a switch.
Irene is the greatest actress ever.
... OK, but I suspect Meryl Streep fans might argue...LOL!
At the 0:18 mark for those that don't recognize her.
she and gramma walton always looked like they were in their 60s
Good ol' Granny!
Too bad it was one of her first acting jobs (uncredited) 😒
Funny, the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein posed exactly the same question...
Lions and possum innards.
Ewwwe! granny didn't know you were a flapper girl? Alot you don't know about me Jed!
I think the lion has more acting ability than the whole collection along the bar.
Granny was a great actress. Without Granny and Jethro the Beverly Hillbillies would have been a flop.
ha ha yeah !👍
She was the Paganini of the rubber face 0:24 to 0:26 from glowing with enthusiasm to fascination & fear .... to 0:28 coquettish -- even squeezing in a massive lower lip quiver along the way.
Granny wasn't bad looking in her younger years.
She was a beautiful young woman!
Sean Penn’s mom.
Granny Mosses (Beverly Hillbillies) would have grabbed her shotgun and that lion would have been gone.

Ha. Ha.
Ellie May would have put a stop to that. :P
@@DementedCaver Yup, she would've had a new critter!😁
He wouldn't have been gone- he'd have been served for dinner at the 'fancy eatin' table!!

Back in the days before smoking and drinking were bad for you.
I must say I think you're mistaken- I'd be willing to bet that every single one of them is dead!! (LOL!)
she still sounds like granny
Back then ladies talk to men at nightclubs! The good old days of courtship! Now, they are completely separate! Ladies group together and dance together, same with the men! LOL!
Men dancing together?? You might wanna shop for a new watering hole- just sayin'...
Actually they just meet on line these days. Love at first byte.
My mother always said she was a pretty woman when she wasn’t playing Granny. I wonder what my mother was drinking?
Hahaha
The recipe ? LOL.
But I wanna know what lions think about
She wore blackface in King Kong
I think I just seen someone say let’s go Brandon
