Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is the start of the MCU's new Phase 5...and it's not the most promising start. In this video, I break down what I like here and what I don't.

My expectations were low, but I really enjoyed myself. It was a lot of fun - MODOK was great, Paul Rudd killed it, Michele Pfieffer and Michael Douglas benefited from expanded roles, Jonathan Majors was thrilling. I wonder if you, and several other RUclips critics I like, have fallen into the trap of lionising the early Marvel films in a way that forgets these are fun movies for kids. Marvel's films are a step up from any of the competition in this area - it's a kids movie that's enjoyable for adults too, especially if they're fans of the old comics.
      MODOK was hilarious too.

You know I just realized something. In the trailers it was implied that Scott would be convinced to work for Kang after he offers him the the opportunity to make up for lost time with his daughter, basically he'd be given the same deal Kang offered Janet. Having been incarcerated and then trapped in the Quantum Realm for 5 years he effectively missed her entire childhood and now he's watching her follow in his footsteps, making the same mistakes he did when he was younger. It would be a much better conflict if Scott had to come to terms with the fact that he missed out on her growing up and that he had to accept things as they were despite their relationship not being ideal. Too bad that isn't the movie we got. What a missed opportunity...

I got so excited when I saw him messed up, arm locked against Kang and saying “we just both have to lose”
That was SUCH a great set up for his sacrifice right next. And if he sacrificed himself while Kang survived but injured, that would’ve been a phenomenal ending that woulda almost saved the movie.
Then the wasp showed up and they “killed” him.
    Lame.
“But hey, holy sht. They are making both of them stuck in the quantum real as a couple. I’m sure it will lead to a hype comeback with an army -endgame type of stuff “
But then it’s followed by Cassie opening a door super easily.

I kind of thought in this film either Antman was going to die fighting Kang or he was going to end up trapping himself and Kang in the Quantum Realm to prevent him escaping. And I figured Cassie and the rest of the crew would pick up the slack for him while he was stuck in the Quantum Realm doing exploration stuff. And maybe every couple of months Luis would get on one of the communication devices and give Antman one of his trademark summing things up recaps of what's going on in MCU or the Antman crew outside.
I think the marketing for 2 of the trailers made Kang seem like a way more lethal character that was going to be a menacing threat to not be messed with. But no, unfortunately. Majors was still good as Kang like you said, would've just liked for him to do more and leave more of an impact. I was hoping Antman would've faced some kind of lasting consequences due to fighting Kang to just show he's a different kind of threat than the past bosses he's faced. (one of the example ideas of consequences I had was either getting killed or really damaged as a result or getting stuck in the Quantum Realm which would keep him more isolated from his kid that he's been trying to connect with.)
I thought it was way too easy for Antman and the Wasp to get out of the Quantum Realm at the end.
Better than Thor Love and Thunder definitely, but definitely not what you would've wanted to start off the next big phase of the MCU. But hopefully Loki season 2 is good.

B) Had hank stay behind and suit up one last time and sacrifice himself. You get to see the original ant-man in action and it provides at least a major character death to fluff up KANG THE CONQUEROR. C)When Janet says “it’s over” Kang just looks at her and says “Does it matter? I just wanted to see how hard he’d try. Then simply bring Scott back to when he was in prison using his machine that Scott so graciously fixed. And proceed to give Scott exactly what he wants leaving both him and Cassie in those cells ending the movie. They don’t die and they can have a good part in dynasty. While I love Pena's performances in the previous films, I didn't miss him in this one (that said, an after credits scene with him would've been way better than the gathering of the Kangs one we got). I felt that just having the ant-man family for this adventure was perfect but not quite executed as well as it should've. There was a lot of room for them to explore the relationships between Hank and Janet, Hope and Janet, Scott and Cassie, etc. which never happened.

Just saw the movie last weekend, my thoughts are:
    - Why is MODOK the only character to get an arc?
    - I literally at the end said "Oh right they're a couple?" when Ant-Man and the Wasp kissed.
    - I feel like the movie moved at such a breakneck pace that you barely had time to have any character moments or learn anything about the world. Like they heard the criticism that these movies are more like theme park rides than cinema and just decided to run with it.
    - Who approved the MODOK design?
    - Why would they set up a perfectly fine character arc with Cassie telling Scott he needs to get involved in conflicts because they're the right thing to do, not just because he has a personal stake in them, and then abandon that by having her get captured so that the only reason Scott gets involved is because the stakes got personal?
    - Isn't the way Scott escapes from the quantum realm in the first Ant-Man by equipping one of the 'Enlarge' discs to make himself larger again? Implying that you can just escape the quantum realm by getting bigger? But then that never seems to come up as an option here, even when we see that Janet had some of the enlarging discs in the quantum realm while she was trapped there.
    - Why does Cassie still get sleepy from growing big during the ending fight scene? Aren't they still subatomic? Or at the very least in a place where normal physics/spacetime doesn't apply?
    - Man, given recent events they might be regretting leaning so heavily on Jonathan Majors now (depending on what evidence comes out)
    - Seriously, who approved that MODOK design?

Fits thematically, Cap's line "We don't trade lives" was pretty iconic, so right out of the gate needing to trade lives to defeat 1 of many Kangs would've been nice.
And for Cassie, the entire movie was her getting a crash course on becoming Ant-Man, I thought her being the one to thematically bring Darren back from the dead, and convince him to help defeat Kang was a nice touch, but none of that got expanded on in a meaningful way.

They're too damn greedy for their own good. All the problems of the MCU can be traced back to the studio executives rushing things out the door and hammering their CGI workers for the sake of appeasing their do-nothing corporate shareholders. (Oh, but he 'helped' lol) Seemed like the story should have focused on Janet but they didn't want the movie led by someone over 60.

However, this was the first time I knew going in that there was going to be a HUGE shift in tone that was completely different from the first two films, and it showed, especially with Michael Peña and Scott's other friends being completely absent. It really sucks since they were some of the things that I enjoyed so much about them.
I still had a decent time with this one but I really hope that Guardians Vol. 3 will make up for a weak start to Phase 5 since this just didn't do much for me, other than Jonathan Majors as Kang

You know, this entire saga could be fixed if in Kang Dynasty there's a plot twist that Love and Thunder, She-hulk, and some other MCU movies from this saga turned out to take place in other universes other than the main universe. It would make those films better and more accessible.

  • @jessicastrike5640

I think this film could have done with a rewrite to involve the side characters (scenes showing them missing Scott and Cassie, trying to get them back would have done it) and set some higher stakes (again more scenes on the surface might have helped us fear Kang getting out) and especially the heist aspect. It could have actually worked if Hank and Janet were left behind as she has all the knowledge of Kang so when Scott and Hope (much earlier in the film than we actually saw) agree to help him steal the thing Janet had hidden away there’s more drama. Similarly we can see the characters left on the surface start to fall out and argue amongst themselves for more drama. Hope could feel more involved especially as she can solve clues Janet may have left behind that Scott alone could not because he doesn’t have that relationship with Janet.
Also not sure how I feel about Scott only helping Kang because he was blackmailed, I think I would have preferred it if he made a genuinely selfish decision (as the trailers gave the impression, that can’t have just been me?) because Kang offered him time with his daughter. While Cassie is helping the rebels he is working to release Kang until he realises his mistake and joins the fight against Kang giving up his selfish desire and just deciding to help these people and accept that he needs to make the most of the time he does have with Cassie and the rest of his family
But what we got was fine too I suppose

What a nice review. It clearly states the problem with Marvel at the moment, too much hype without careful execution, it is like they are trying to increase IP volume to drive new subscribers and compete in library terms with Netflix. I never liked the Antman series, I always thought that I was not the target audience. The movies are more similar to a Sonic movie than to an Avengers movie. However, I have to say that both Sonic movies were a blast of fun and easy going and relaxed my mind, so I think that Antman movies accomplish the same purpose. The issue with Quantumania is that it has an actual plot and villain that are important to the lore and therefore, it needed to be more focused and serious. We as viewers needed to feel the threat of Kang, something that Disney actually failed to do with Thanos and therefore needed to make an unnecessary Thanos-is-important movie called Infinity Wars. I dont know why we needed Scott's daughter in this movie or why we needed Bill Murray. We already had 4 main characters and recognizable actors, and the story already included Pfeiffer meeting Kang. This movie should have focused on Jonathan Majors, where the threat of Kang is so powerful that our 4 heroes decide to sacrifice going back to the world to imprison Kang forever. However, 2 of them needed to scape in order to alert the Avengers that a new enemy was coming. Once again, these marvel movies need more focus and less characters.

The problem with this slate of MCU movies is simply they don't feel like they are building up to much. Kang is a decent choice I suppose in terms of a followup to Thanos. But the problem is... that first couple phases of the MCU were building up to the infinity gauntlet story. It was punctuated with Avengers movies which, at the time, was really surprising seeing loads of heroes onscreen at the same time. This set of movies doesn't have the Avengers... and if it did it wouldn't have the version people were excited about. It just feels like one of those periods in comics when not much is going on and there are lots of individual comics telling fun stories but it's not one of those periods where much coherence was found in them.
There's nothing "Wrong" with the MCU. It's a series of movies based on comics. But sometimes, in comics, there isn't much going on and they just don't need to be tied together.

I don’t know what everyone was watching but I thought this was a great start to Phase 5. Kang’s storyline was great and potential impacts on the whole world seem unlimited. I really think they are taking the time to show where everything is going and I think it will be way crazier than Infinity War and Endgame were when every movie comes together. I guess if you really wanted a solid Ant Man centric story I could see the disappointment, but as an MCU movie I thought this was insane. I also thought the CGI was really good, not sure why there was so much hate.

I agree with you on that, I am looking forward to Quantumania to know about Kang, but I wish Quantumania's writers could find a better balance of focus between Kang and the main Ant-Man characters, and did not recast Emma Fuhrmann from Avengers: Endgame, and did not rewrite Cassie Lang's character to fit their message of political activism by making her dislike her dad for...doing seemingly nothing else _after he saved the entire universe from Thanos_ when she used to love her dad in the first two Ant-Man films for showing her how even ex-convicts can turn into superheroes. Scott Lang learning about Hank Pym's broken relationship with Hope Van Dyne and Janet Van Dyne was a cautionary tale to warn him about going down the same wrong path with Cassie Lang and Maggie Lang.

I think the one thing this movie finally confirms for me it’s that while Marvel may have a plan, it’s not as fleshed out as they’d like us to believe. This is especially apparent by the always changing cgi, it’s clear that things are changed and swapped around like it’s nothing and that’s something that really bugs me when it comes to filmmaking. When I saw Bill Pope’s name came up in the credits and I was surprised because this did not feel anything close to a veteran who’s shot some of the most amazing films.

I thought parts of the movie had potential, like the initial visuals in the quantum realm were gorgeous. Scott getting stuck in a giant pile of Scotts was something I had hoped they’d do, cuz in real quantum physics you have superposition of states. But when they defeated KANG with a big grey space battle? I was so disappointed. And I even turned to my boyfriend and said “well now they can just use Kang as the villain in every movie and just say it’s a different Kang.” And sure enough, that’s what the end credit scene was.
