@@user-cp5js2be1vthat’s not true at all. These dogs are expensive so even the “worst” farmer would rather bite a vet bill than to put the animal down so easily. Plus it takes so much time and training to bond a dog with a flock, a farm dog won’t protect a flock it’s not bonded to. So even from a heartless standpoint that’s not a good route to take if the dog can be saved. A lot of the time is an animal MUST be put down it’s usually something you can’t get over, like rabies or a life threatening injury that would just keep the dog suffering.
We live in a very rural area, with coyotes and feral hogs. The feral hogs tear up the pasture. We have 5 Great Pyrenees dogs, all about 2 years old now. At first the neighbor was not happy about our dogs showing up on his property and even threatened to shot them. We explained that these dogs are Great Pyrenees and they are guard dogs and will not kill his calves. One day this past spring the neighbor’s wife came over and said that her husband wanted us to keep the dogs in their kennels because they were expecting calves. We again explained about the dogs, and we even pointed out that we don’t have any fresh digging in our pasture because the dogs keep the feral hogs off the pasture. Last week the neighbor came by to visit and he was telling us that our dogs are now guarding his cattle and was happy about that. We also asked him if the feral hogs were still digging up his pasture and he admitted that he had seen no recent digging. We all smiled. Great Pyrenees are good dogs in a rural environment. Can’t say enough about how good this breed of dog will guard and keep predators away.

I have a Great Pyrenees named Teddie, and although I know full well he could take down the coyotes in the field yards away, I still feel extremely protective of him ! I protect him 😂 He's been charged and attacked by smaller dogs but he only pins them down. He never hurt smaller animals. I think he knows the difference between a real threat and a nuisance. He is overly protective of me, however, and he defers to my Dachshund. They're very soulful dogs, unlike all others and when he passes, they'll probably need to sedate me. We/humans don't deserve them 🐾💓🐾
I’m in California, and behind my house is a field with two coyotes living there. Right beside the field is a farm. One day, I watched one of the coyotes sneak into the farm. Not realizing there was a great Pyrenees guarding his herd and flock, the dog began its pursuit, but the coyote was able to get away. It was a very close call for the coyote. The dog seemed proud, waging his tail after the victory.
The reason he was gone for those 2 days is because he tracked the other coyotes down to their den and finished the rest of the coyotes off. Extraordinary dog and story.

I live in Wyoming, blessed to live in Buffalo, Wyoming at the foot of the Big Horn Mountains. One day on a drive up in the mountains we came across a large flock of sheep grazing about 100 ft. from a fence keeping them from getting on the roadway. Little did we know they were being guarded by dogs. We got out of our vehicle to stand by it and watch the sheep graze for awhile, when out of nowhere we saw two very large dogs charging toward us. They meant business!!!! We jump in the car and sped off, only to see one of the dogs jump the fence and chase us down the roadway. To be sure, I now have deep respect for guard dogs.

I've raised and loved these dogs for almost 20 years. They guarded my Goats. There's nothing I can say that will be enough about these Valiant Protectors. They will fight the world if their "Charges" are threatened, and Die willingly and happily to see their charges safe. I sold my Goat herd last year, but kept 2 with me. I could not bear to part with them. They are 1/2 inside and 1/2 outside Pets and have a life here with me for as long as they live. I Owe them more than I'll ever be able to repay. Super Heroic Dog, He’s a tough Boy- Worth his weight in gold! Took on 12-13 coyotes & won. But as the vet suggested, Not only did he protect the sheep, but also other nearby pets, because a pack of 13, wouldn’t think twice about hunting someone’s Pomeranian or their poodle, or could attack a human, a small child wouldn’t stand a chance, This dog is a hero.
I had a dog that was 1/2 Great Pyrenees and he was a wonderful protector! He was found by my SIL in an under an abandonded trailer with no sign of any mother or siblings. So she brought him home and that dog protected 4 houses, 3 horses and 8 chickens. He was so protective that if I would get into a car he did not know he would headbutt that car all the way down our 1/2 mile driveway trying to get to me to protect me. We had other small dog and small children and not once did we ever have to worry about coyotes! RIP Bubba my loving protector!
This is why I’m the proud owner and breeder of the courageous and loyal Great Pyrenees. I’ve had this breed as working guardians for my goats and sheep for over 20 years. I wouldn’t have any other breed hands down. This is a great example of how fierce they are when it comes to protecting the herd. Congratulations to this big beautiful hero🥰
I agree. I have been raising sheep for ten yrs and have four GP's. I have never lost anything to a predator. Not even a duck or a chicken. They are an amazing breed.
What’s going on with the Great Pyrenees being dumped in Texas and other states in south ? There are Great Pyrenees rescues swimming in them it is so sad !
@@Karen-lo5oiMaybe, this urban farmer should have had more Great Pyrenees to guard his flock. Then, the coyotes would have given the flock a wide berth because they knew they were out gunned as it were.
We have had two Pyranees in our life. Absolutely the most wonderful dogs. We lived in Western Nebraska with many coyotes. We didn’t have sheep but we had cows, chickens, cats, horses , Border Collies and donkeys. One day a pack of coyotes was across the road, our Pyranees went across the road and the coyotes circled him. Husband went in the house for a rifle. Those coyotes started jumping in and nipping at our dog but not actually touching him. The dog circled and looked at each coyote. We watched and eventually the coyotes backed off and left. Not one bite! I always say…I don’t know what Devereaux said to those coyotes but he talked them down.
I'd never pass up an opportunity to shoot a coyote. Rotten vermin killed my favorite Border Collie pup. No mercy. Kill them all and let the fox come back.
The "great" in Great Pyrenees name isn't about the size of the mountain range, it's about the loyalty, courage and dedication of these wonderful dogs. They have been bred to deal with wolves and bears, so coyotes are "tis but a scratch" to them.
I love this breed. They are unique Their love us beyond. They are quiet not clingy but always there. Intelligence beyond! Forget sit stay come…. They offer greater riches! .
I remember our first one we had back in the 80's, she was a puppy. I went out back to lay out in the sun. Slathered myself up with oil and had just laid on the grass on my towel when my dad let the dog out. And she made a bee-line for me. Jumped all over me. I was covered in white fluffy fur, all stuck to the oil lol. Wish they had a longer lifespan.

the loyalty of dogs knows no bounds...my buddie, a bluetick named Sadie, literally stared down a full grown mama bear when we were on a hike after i accidentally came across a pair of her cubs. Once mama stepped out on the trail Sadie walked up, stomped her feet and barked like ive never seen her do before. she was ready to die for me and that was really something
I had LGD’s for 15 years. You won’t find a more loyal, fierce protector of your home or livestock than this breed of dog. They wouldn’t even let a crow land in the yard. Worth every penny.
My boyfriend was driving us down the back roads, as usual. And there’s this bigger house we never really pay attention to, seems to be a farm with a huge yard and fenced in area. I’m always looking at the horses as we drive by. And one night at 2am driving the back road at night, a bigger dog came up to our car barking and we stopped. It appeared from the fenced in yard by the farm, it came from the darkness, we almost didn’t see it until it came around and got in front of our car. We didn’t know what to do, we originally thought the dog was a stray, but we didn’t know why it would stop our car, we thought it needed help. Until 2 or 3 other big dogs came from the darkness in the yard, almost circling our car and barking, sniffing. We tried driving away a bit, but they seemed to be trailing the back of the car, barking and walking alongside the house, protecting it. My first instinct was to try and find out if something was wrong with them. But I realized, those were the guard dogs of the farm, protecting the horses that I look at everyday, about 40 of them, all different shades of color. I love that I’ve never seen any people outside the farm, I’ve never seen the dogs before, but now I know the horses are protected late at night, and I know not to drive by there at 2am again lol.
Sounds like stopping the car triggered their threat response: next time you drive by at night, just keep moving - and hope your car doesn’t break down!

He went to back door want out again and ran back to his sheep & goat herd to make sure they were ok. Normally Nipper never comes in the house he prefers is herd.
My mom had several Great Pyrenees dogs as a young girl living in urban Indiana. I remember her talking about them. Growing up on a horse farm, we had a St Bernard, an Old English sheepdog and various other dogs and feral cats. I wish we had some Great Pyrenees dogs too especially when I think about when our broodmares went into foal and were very vulnerable.
As a person who grew up with horses I have great admiration for the beautiful dogs like Casper that live to protect their four legged charges. Casper =absolute hero and incredibly brave.
My friend had a Great Pyrenees guarding injured race horses. He was the sweetest huge dog I ever met. Very serious workers and all business whatever job you give them to do. He too fought off coyotes when they showed up. Never lost one horse thanks to him!
Dogs are tough as hell. I have seen dogs recover from serious injuries without even limp after they healed. I have livestock and four dogs. None are LSGD but they are all working dogs. They protect the animals from all sorts of predators. We have had mountain lions, bears, coyotes , fox, badgers, raccoons, hawks and eagles on our property and the dogs go after all of them. I can’t imagine life without the dogs for security and safety.
I’m so glad to hear your response because dogs are the best deterrents to predators. Packs of dogs are what most farms need and we know there are no shortages of dogs. It’s too bad a charity doesn’t make this a mission to place dogs on all farms with livestock to act as guards
This story is BS but dogs are tough. I watched a Pyrenees get her hamstring blown apart with a deer rifle, bleed out on the way to the vet and within a week was walking around almost healed.
A friend said to me many years ago that a dog is a noble animal. How right he was. This boy showed his nobility. He was not asked but did what he had to do. Not compelled but acted of his own volition. He is one huge spirit. A dog amongst dogs.
Thank you for deciding to take him to the vet. And enough people care about that baby enough he's got Angels everywhere cuz he is Angel. God bless all the people that helped him get better. What a beautiful dog he is, get better Casper.
I grew up with a Great Pyrenees -- Brutus -- huge dog 175 pounds. He was the meekest, most loving dog who took orders from our two Pugs. He had another side that came out one day when a German Shepherd attacked him. What a fight! Brutus took off an ear and sent the Shepherd squealing down the street. Then he went back to waging his tail and being loving.
Pyrs will protect you and your family just as vigorously. They have the 2nd strongest bite force in the dog world at 700 PSI. For comparison, a Pit Bull has a bite force of 235 PSI. They are the best family dogs as well as livestock guardians. They are very loving and can be BIG couch potatoes...until they hear or see something! Instant guard mode! They are bit barky, but if you live in a rural area, you want that, to let you know something not normal is going on. Don't expect to train them like a Golden Retriever, they don't do tricks. They protect!
Pyreneans are great, however if the area was infested with hordes of predators like in this case, it would make sense upgrading to Caucasian Shepherds. They are absolute monsters and would tear through any amount of coyotes without sustaining much damage.
Yeah, they arent too practical for anywhere outside of mountainous area and terain though.. i belive the Pyr and Anatolian Shepherd basically the united states version of a Kangal are the way to go in the states. @@DestroyerOfLiberals
Casper is a true hero ! Excellent job done... Hoping his recovery is going well. The farmer got a first hand look at what this dog and its breed are about.. Casper took down 8 out of 13 coyotes , Very impressive...The farmer owes Casper a lot of steaks for his heroic deed of protecting his flock of sheep. Treat, care and love that pup with respect and kindness, he deserves it! Plus the farmers neighbor's owes Casper alot as well, for stopping the threat on their livestock.
According to other comments here, the reason Casper took two days to return home is because he tracked the remaining coyotes to their den, and made sure he'd killed every last one of them before he even thought about anything else. Pretty incredible, IMHO.
An interesting comment about giving Casper a steak. I learned from the people in our Italian village that their fierce protectors only drink whey because of the high protein and other nutrient content. They never eat meat of any kind for obvious reasons.
Coyotes are a species of canine, so they are dogs and very intelligent. It would not surprise me if the remnants of the pack that Casper vanquished were keeping well clear of "Casper's farm". They might test out for his scent, from a safe distance...

I have a working Great Pyrenees. These dogs are a Godsend! I live in a hollar with hills on both sides of me. My girl was about a year old. It was just at dusk, loosing light fast. One of my goats was in the throws of kidding when we heard coyotes howling, close, on my side of the ridge. My GP comes a flying down the other hill, crosses the creek and puts a run to those coyotes! Thankfully there weren't that many so they weren't as emboldened as the large pack in this story. What a scary event! I am ever so grateful I have her here! She is an important part of my farm! What saddens me are the comments I read from people who have never run a farm, never raised livestock, are probably a bunch of city slickers who have no clue about country life, criticizing the owner. Out here, you better learn to do a lot of doctoring yourself because country vets are as scarce as hens teeth, and nearly impossible to get on the weekend or holidays. And then the government passes a new regulation in the dark of night to make it even harder, if not impossible, for us to treat our animals if need be! I'm sure there's going to be a bunch of dead animals because of it!
It's hard enough to get a vet in small town too now. We have long waiting lists in Canada, and some people have to drive to the nearest city. I don't judge the owners, or hard working farmers, period. Farmers are struggling, and these are huge bills, even if there was a vet available.
@@ezlow1065 As a farmer I now can not buy antibiotics for my animals from a feed store any more. I now have to have a prescription from a vet. Doesn't sound bad on the surface, right? Here's the deal, it is EXTREMELY difficult to get a vet out to the farm. Country vets are as scarce as hens teeth around here! I am EXTREMELY lucky IF I can get one out here for an emergency in time to save the animal. More times than not, we farmers have to learn to do our own vet work. Animals can go down, and die, very quickly if they are not treated as soon as possible. I lost a goat because I did not have the proper medication on hand when I discovered her. I now make sure I have what I might need on hand. When my supply of antibiotic runs out, if I can't get a vet to give me a prescription before I actually need it, I could lose animals. A BETTER solution would have been to have antibiotics available in smaller vials. I have to buy 100ml vials, which is the smallest available. The dosage for my goats is 1-3 ml for 1-3 days (depending on why it's being given, and size of the animal).Once that vial has been opened, I have 60 days to use it before I have to throw it away. I have had to throw away 99 mls of antibiotic because I can not get it in smaller vials. See the problem?
Thank you for treating Casper! He almost gave his ‘all’ defending this sheep! Can you get a 2nd or 3rd of him so there is a ‘small army’ there to meet the predators? You have a wonderful dog. Am crying.

What a heart warming story and such a sweet dog. I lost my great Pyrenees dog "Callie." 14 months ago and miss her greatly. Got her from a rescue center and she died of all things a lung tumor and was only 8 y/o.

I don't understand why the owner didn't join in on the fight either. He said it was about half an hour of fighting.
exactly my thought why did the owner not get the gun out??@@MustardSkaven
he did mention URBAN shepherding. He probably couldn't legally open fire in a neighborhood unless his own life was directly threatened. which even in "open and shut" cases can be financial ruin to prove.

Learned a good lesson about sheep guards without getting harmed. All's well that ends well.
Guardian. Not guard. Guardian dogs alert. Then take action if the leader doesn’t take action or show up. I strongly recommend one.
Yep, they're doing their job and they take it seriously. Huge respect for livestock Guardian dogs.

Oh my goodness. Everything in this story made me so emotional. But for some reason the part that made me shed a tear was how that wonderful vet started a go fund me and raised more than they asked for, so the money will help save the next animal who desperately needs it. That’s beautiful.

They've been bred for over 1000 years for One Job & They Do That Job Magnificently Well.
Do they protect from snakes as well?
@@gmoore9450 My Go To Answer is that they protect against anything they see as a Threat. I had one bitten years ago but have no idea what happened to the snake. Dosed her with pain meds and broad spectrum antibiotics and she lived another 10 years. Sorry I can't be more help. Dogs in general don't like snakes. that's why so many get bitten.
That's what I love about flock guardians. They don't kill unless they have to❤

The "great" in Great Pyrenees name isn't about the size of the mountain range, it's about the loyalty, courage and dedication of these wonderful dogs. They have been bred to deal with wolves and bears, so coyotes are "tis but a scratch" to them.

What an honor to have a family member like Casper in your life,
Pyrs will protect you and your family just as vigorously.
Well said! My Marema is just like that! Awesome dogs!
Pyreneans are great, however if the area was infested with hordes of predators like in this case, it would make sense upgrading to Caucasian Shepherds. They are absolute monsters and would tear through any amount of coyotes without sustaining much damage.

He got all 13 that's where he was for two days
An interesting comment about giving Casper a steak. I learned from the people in our Italian village that their fierce protectors only drink whey because of the high protein and other nutrient content. They never eat meat of any kind for obvious reasons.
Coyotes are a species of canine, so they are dogs and very intelligent. It would not surprise me if the remnants of the pack that Casper vanquished were keeping well clear of "Casper's farm". They might test out for his scent, from a safe distance...

Hell yes, you decide to treat and heal this dog. (I just wish all veterans would be treated as thoroughly.)
I don't criticize the owner for have a livestock dog. I criticize him for lying about what happened.

Casper did a great job and so did the compassionate and generous people who donated🙏🏻
God bless him. And thank to all the people that helped to pay his vet bill.
This dog is a beautiful courageous soul, deserves to be saved and loved for life.
What a blessing that he made it home 🏡
What a heart warming story and such a sweet dog. I lost my great Pyrenees dog "Callie." 14 months ago and miss her greatly. Got her from a rescue center and she died of all things a lung tumor and was only 8 y/o.
Love to you. It's such a heartbreak. I lost my sweet mixed breed (9 years old, also a rescue,) about a year ago to bladder cancer, and I'm still crying. I do absolutely believe that she's in heaven...but I'll still miss her every day until I join her.
It is a miracle. Yes, praise God to the doctors and staff that worked to save him.
Love Casper and LOVE dogs. Amazing, incredible, Loyal animals 🥹🥰🙏
I'd kill 1,000 mindless sheep to save the life of one wild and free coyote. This world is very messed up. God seems to serve evil more often than he serves good. Very strange.
Oh, this is a real life story. Keep your foolishness to yourself.
What a GOOD boy!! I’m so happy he survived and healed well.
Thank you to all who donated...my turn next time. Just found this story..how great is the guy that owes him..these days with profits being so important. Your new to you dog is a gem! Blessings to all.
hats off to the person who saved his dog🙏🙏🙏
God bless this dog and all the beautiful people who helped.
Heck! The way worshippers of imaginary entities infect threads concerning animals is discouraging for the mental health of our species.
What a good boy! I just want to shower him in praise and affection. I'm so glad he made it back home.
This is medal of honor stuff in the human world
