A few years ago I lived in Texas, in a rural area with a very large deer herd. They roamed all over the neighborhood, and some people put out feed for them. I would give them pieces of apples, carrots etc when I had them, but I didn't feel it was a good idea to encourage dependence on my feeding them. I had a large fenced back yard, with a rickety fence that they leapt over easily. They would quite often come to my yard, graze and lie around, relaxing; especially my back yard because it felt safer for them I think. Two deer gave birth in my yard, which was mind-blowing, and the mothers often left their babies in the high grass there while they went off to graze elsewhere. They would approach me so closely at times, my eyes teared up at the beauty of their innocence and trust; but I didn't encourage that either because I know it's best if they don't trust humans too much, but I wanted SO badly to kiss & hug them, never forget that.
My wild suburban whitetail are very discerning of human behavior..it's amazing to understand them, watch them, & see how they respond.. they are very calm and respectful, yet wary..
You are wise to not let the deer get too comfortable with you - it could put them in danger from deer hunters, who they might walk right up to, looking for treats like other humans have given them.

I had to laugh as the twin deer were wandering around the Archery Target lol. There is a herd of deer that come up and like to antagonize my 170 Malamute/Husky when he is tied up outside. They get just to about 5 feet away from where he can reach them and they just stand there "laughing" at him as he is talking to them. Husky's love to talk and he is no exception to that rule LOL. 2 years ago there was a wolf pack that was hanging around and they must have thought he was their Alpha or something as I would walk outside and there would be half a dozen wolves laying around him. They would growl at me, my dog, "Beast" would growl at them, and then they would just lay back down. It was funny but I eventually convinced the wolves to move on as we and our neighbors all have other small animals and small children that would make an awesome snack for them lol. We also have squirrels who come onto our deck and knock on the windows to irritate our dogs and cats in the house. There are large bunnies hopping all around our yard, raccoons who sunbath on our deck (I always thought they were nocternial lol), and Woodpeckers that cling to our window screens and knock on the windows. There is a momma fox and 3 babies that we see running around from time to time and there is a small black momma bear who usually has 1-3 cubs every year. The black bear momma isn't a very good mother as she will be screwing around down by the lake and the babies will be up toward our house playing with our kid's outdoor toys lol.
