Sewing Fluffy Victorian Underwear || Making an 1860s Chemise and Drawers

  • I made a set of Victorian chemise and drawers as a base layer for my cosplay of Hannah Alexander's Alice in Wonderland Design. This is the first construction video of the series and I think we're off to a pretty good start! I'm using historical research from the mid-Victorian era, specifically the 1860s, since that's the decade Alice in Wonderland was written and the silhouette that seems to most suit the design.
In this video I show my process for altering a commercial pattern and go through the fitting process for non-fitted undergarments.

Abby cox has a whole video where they talk about tucking or untucking the chemise/drawers sitch. Basically, your choice! Tuck into each leg hole if split drawers, or over depending on your bathroom prefs. Some people only tuck the back since its easier for them
More importantly, we are still standing with you and all of our Aapi brothers and sisters in this ongoing struggle

    • @moth.faerie

thank you so much! on both topics💕I think I've personally decided I like the chemise tucked in better because it gets so uncomfortable if it twists around and the drawers help prevent that a little bit 😅

Hi. Beautifully produced video, as always.
I'm so sorry you're having a bad week. Living through the echo's of the shots in the weeks following is never easy. Nor is it easy to watch people in authority play down the hate part of the crime. It's unacceptable. I'm sorry you have to experience this. Stay safe. Be well.

That chemise pattern brings back memories! When I was a teenager (omg it was almost 20 years ago now wtf) my mom and I made me an outfit from this era for Pioneer Trek. Basically where Mormon teenagers go and walk and pull handcarts for a few days to reenact our ancestors' journey to Utah. This was the chemise pattern we used, and I think we also used it for the drawers. We didn't get a chance to make a corset, as badly as I wanted one, but we made a hoop skirt (it kept collapsing; it definitely wasn't the best) and two dresses. I loved the chemise so much, and I wore it the most out of all of the pieces we made for that ensemble. It had lace with dark red ribbon threaded through it on the yoke and sleeves. ❤

I hope the same for you! If I ever make a props video I'll have to bleep the whole thing out it will be one giant f-bomb

You deserve a place to breathe and just feel safe to grieve. What happened in Atlanta is traumatizing, and the fact that the police and media have the audacity to say this wasn't a hate crime is both false and harmful. We all unfortunately have heard the stereotypes that lead to this, and we have all heard the hate spewed for years. This wasn't surprising and it's awful how little was done to work against it before this happened. Thank you so much for posting links to help the families and for intervention training I hope that we can work for a better future, we just need those in power to recognize and admit the issue. I cannot get over the fact that they even tried to humanize the murderer, it was unacceptable. "Having a bad day" My ass. Everyone has bad days. The officer who said that was just as racist and should be fired as he likely has no trust from the community.
I really hope you are able to find some time to breathe and rest your heart. Do not feel like you owe the world your happiness when you are not feeling happy. Speaking your truth is so important, and those of us who watch and adore your videos understand and only want for your health, both physical and mental. Please take care of yourself and be safe!
As always your video was wonderful and your skills as a seamstress are extraordinary. Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful work.

Thank you so much for that extremely thoughtful comment, I really appreciate everything you said ❤ I've definitely been able to take some time to process and get to a better head space, so I'm feeling better - or at least more angry and motivated for change than sad and paralyzed. So better in a way! I've been especially frustrated that no one in power seems to be taking much responsibility for what that cop said or doing anything to give the true narrative since there was another mass shooting and it's shifted back to the 'but you can't take my guns' argument. It feels like a hopeless fight for gun control every time a new attack happens.
But again, thank you for the kind comments you always leave, I'm so glad you liked the video!

I am so glad to hear that you are in a better head space. Albeit anger, but in times like these, who can expect anything else? It's a great motivator, as you said! I definitely hope that we can push them in the right direction, if not all the way.
I totally noticed the shift too, which is frustrating as hell. The topic was quickly changed from racism to gun rights, which I suppose is maybe because they're so uncomfortable speaking of/admitting that racism is the problem? Hopefully everyone speaking out and calling it to light will help.

as an API femme stumbling onto yr videos a year after this incident, i really feel those feelings and remember so clearly now what that was like back then. i hope we garner the strength to continue fighting back against these systems that insist that ours and other colonized and oppressed ppl's dignity, worth, and self-determination are devalued because of _us_. no. we reject white supremacy forever.

      @moth.faerie  2 года назад

yes definitely it's so disheartening that there continue to be attacks targeting Asians and there doesn't seem to be much attention on it outside of the AAPI community anymore. tbh it's really hard for me a lot of days to be motivated to put myself out on the internet in the general public social media sphere, but it always makes me feel better when I see other asians just existing and being present and it helps motivate me that I could be that for other people 😊 if you have any specific sewing questions I'm more than happy to help, feel free to dm me on instagram!!

By the time of your outro, I’d forgotten this was old and thought you were obviously speaking of the Buffalo NY grocery store shooting (also by a young white dude). I hate that we have so many weeks when “I am reeling because multiple people died, because of their race, religion, or maybe possibly because of work they probably took as they were limited to based on race and language fluency levels. The Spanish speakers have the local landscaping, that group that speaks several related African languages has the dry cleaning, here’s where I don’t have to translate every word I hear or speak and they know what the festivals and foods and so on are so yeah, looks better than McDonald’s”
