Making a Chatelaine, Necklace, and Other Accessories for Historically Inspired Alice in Wonderland

- This is the final video in my Historically Inspired Alice in Wonderland series! This week I made the gloves and bows for the shoes, as well as all of the jewelry. The necklace was kind of combination of a few various techniques with a choker as the base and some pearl strands and pendants. Rather than make whatever is going on the illustration under the center front of the bodice, I decided to make a chatelaine instead! I think it turned out much cuter and honestly was a lot easier than trying to do a bunch of stuff with gem stones. I'm super happy with how all the jewelry turned out and like.. B- satisfied with the gloves haha. Gloves are definitely not my strong point, but I'll get better eventually with more practice! This the fourteenth and final part of my series making Hannah Alexander's Alice in Wonderland design and my research and inspiration are drawn very heavily from mid-Victorian fashion, specifically the 1860s, since that's when Alice in Wonderland was written and what seems to most match Hannah's drawing.

With gloves, I find hand sewing both more efficient and less stressful. Whipping the edges together is much less of a pain, but I get cleaner, less sensory-bad seams with blind hems. 🙂
Love The Chatelaine, it feels a bit like Alice made it along the way on her journey. :}

I love how you merge cosplay and history! Chatelaine was a brilliant idea. If you don't like the owl on the watch, you can just keep it open for the photoshoot. Can't wait to see the whole thing together!
As for the videos, I really like that the whole project was split into small bits, this way we have more content and time to see new techniques and you have more breathing space. Although I can see how you might want to have a short project in-between big multi-video ones, like your hobbity clothes. Either way your videos are very enjoyable. Good luck with your new projects!

I definitely prefer splitting things up into multiple videos, the shorter one like the Hobbit video actually take more work for some reason? Maybe bc I have less of a fleshed out plan 😅 but the next few will still be multiple videos, just more like five rather than fifteen haha
In my experience making gloves, especially out of lightweight material, it's honestly less of a pain to just handsew the little fourchettes. My machine likes to eat anything less than an inch wide, too, and they are such a small project that you might actually save time doing it by hand because you won't have to go back or repair any rips.

Hello, I found your channel last night and just fell in love. Your hard work, your enthusiasm, your Cats... Holy cow I love your cats. I would die for Baby Bat, her little chirps and the fact that she really so obviously loves you and wants to participate in the things you're focused on, it melts my heart.
I've been so impressed by you at every stage of your process. These longer form multi video projects are amazing and I get to enjoy your journey whilst doing a spot of hand sewing of my own.
One thing I thought of was silver rub and buff, for making the bronze and brassy pieces of your Chatelaine match the silver, and if you're worried about it rubbing off, a coat of clear varnish should seal it in nicely.
I am currently studying jewellery making at university and let me tell you, you're doing great. It's all about practice and becoming familiar with your tools and materials. (On that note however, the wire that you found so frustrating when making the crown looks like it was work hardened rather than low quality, and work hardening when it has been moved around, bent, and manipulated a lot is a real issue. Happens even with good quality pure silver wire. I have absolutely shredded pure silver like that. It comes down to knowing how to recognize stress in the metal and how you can put it through the least stress possible, and that's just time.)

Are you studying jewelry making as a whole program or as a class within a more general program? Either way it sounds super interesting! I really enjoyed the single jewelry class I took but there's so much to learn I feel like we really only touched the surface on everything! Unfortunately with the crown I didn't have any real frame to give it structure besides the wire, I think in the future I'd like to explore a frame base so the wire has to do a little bit less of the work. Thank you for the tips!

@@moth.faerie I am majoring in Jewellery and Object (which used to be far more descriptively called 'Gold and Silver Smithing') as part of a batchelor of visual art. Unfortunately the workshop had to be closed by the school due to covid related budget panic, but we shall see what happens.
I have given my baby a boop from you as well, I have nicknamed her Batcat, as her facial markings make her look like she's wearing a Batman mask.
If you would like to get more into jewellery making, look if there are any lost wax casting companies in your area. If you get confident with sculpting wax, you can get it cast in a metal of your choice. It's a fairly approachable method, though you have to be careful to keep the weight of the wax down and hope it doesn't melt in shipping...

thank you!!! and I'm glad the mixed metals are ok 😅 ah I think I might have phrased that wrong! the big projects spread out are actually less exhausting than the single video projects, because I can break everything down into smaller pieces 😊 the next few will be month long projects so a little bit shorter than three months long haha but still definitely easier than trying to turn something around in one week

Bingeing this whole series an entire year later and I actually maybe do have a belated tip for gloves?? coming from when I used to cosplay back in like… 2008. What worked really amazingly well for me despite my mediocre teenage sewing skills, to ensure fit on my weird tiny hands, was basically recreating the pattern you bought but from tracing my own hand, so the measurements would be perfect. Also, free pattern.
I traced my hand, not with spread out fingers, with parallel fingers. You spread your thumb out to the side though, then you cut the thumb off the pattern to create a straight line from forefinger to wrist, which you cut on the fold for the main body of the glove. Then you mirror your thumb cutout, with an approximated arc at the base, (I always guesstimated and stretch jersey saved me) and put a hole in the palm of the other pattern more or less just like the one you got. Obviously it should match your thumb hole guesstimating in circumference or be a little smaller, you don’t want to gather anything.
Then I would just make one long long strip as the gusset between the fingers. (I measured, but as long as it’s long enough it’s fine to trim it down later.) It made the gloves still a little boxy at the fingertips, but that’s easy to adjust and tbh it gives you a little wiggle room if you go too short on the fingers. Also, I did not add any seam allowance at all, so the gusset basically is the seam allowance measurement + additional space for movement. It worked great for stretch fabrics.
No tips for working with that stretch Swiss dot though, I think you did amazing and I don’t want to have to imagine pulling that out of a sewing machine when it tries to eat it.

"Victorian glove darner" - give it a search on etsy and ebay. Similar idea to a sock darner, Just slimmer. A barrel of a Sharpie should work as well (without the historic price tag). I'm thinking gloves may be one of those times where it's quicker and easier to do by hand. I can't even picture the dance you had to do with the machine at each fingertip...
Chatelaine suggestion - use letter seal wax to attach the cork to the bottle. Maybe glue it before you wax the cork. Cork can flex with the humidity. I'd be afraid of the glass vial popping off by accident. If you have a travel sized shampoo bottle that you can strip the branding off of, maybe?
Chatelaine mix metal motivation - in terms of your character, as Alice you would be grabbing whatever tool came to hand. Matching, smatching. She's kind of living through a cute zombie apocalypses. She'd use the tools as they appear.
Video skills recognition - have you been boning up your shooting and editing skill-set? The shot choices and the lighting are just on-point. You are coming into your own with the medium. Well done, you.

I love Chatelaines. I have a lanyard style one for fishing - leather thong, foam neck brace, purple beads spacing out the clips that hold everything I need when I'm standing knee deep in water. They need to come back as an every day thing. I've said it before - the grandparents were smarter than we are when it comes to physical storage and design principles.

ah that's so cool, I was just stitching the holes closed when they were on my hands 😅 honestly I think I'm going to have to remake them before I take the whole costume to a convention, maybe I should just hand sew them!
That's a great idea with the wax, I was just hoping it would stick in there but that's a much better suggestion! and I totally love the idea that the chatelaine was made by whatever Alice found on her way 😊
I got a some new lighting equipment and I think it's really helped with giving each shot a lot more depth! I've been trying to watch lots of 'how to make good videos' youtube videos so I'm glad it's showing, thank you for noticing and commenting about it!
I never thought of chatelaines for fishing, that's such a cool idea!! I think it's really awesome how you use things that are typically thought of as more fashion items for sport!

The fishing lanyard/Chatelaine makes all the difference when you're on the water. Everything is tethered to you. And everything is accessible.
The boys of fishing are in love with these cross-body sling packs that can Hold Everything. Which means they're wandering around with pounds of stuff. She types as she's still in the process of paring down the fishing kit that fits in my variation of a 17th c. pocket...
@@stevezytveld6585 haha that's ok, the perfectionist in me wants them to be just right anyways. does everything get very wet when you go fishing? or is that why they like the cross body bags? so many logistics to think of when your sport is catching things out of the water!
@@moth.faerie So far it's been ok for staying dry. I'm not comfortable wading about in water deeper than my knees and the pocket ends about 2 or 3 inches above. So far I've only been flooded out by a thunderstorm (all of me got soaked, much fun, beautiful and glad to get to shore). But it kept everything together so I count it as a win.
And yeah, the guys like to swing their packs so that the weight is on your back. My problem with the cross body is the usual 38FF issues - that much weight smooshing down just isn't comfortable.
Plus? The cross-body packs cost north of 200$. Uh, no. Not paying that much for a nylon mesh bags built in a sweatshop. They're also built to encourage you to be a maximalist and buy All the equipment. My Granddad fished with a minimal kit. I figure, so can I.
The big trick of standing in the water with stuff is tethers.
Recent Subscriber here, I love being able to watch your progress! It's very relaxing and inspiring. I've got a costume for Renfair (see Profile Picture) that I've got to do some tweaks and repairs on from the last season where it debuted- and already had to tweak the jewelry. Watching how you've put the necklace and especially the Chatelain together has given me some new ideas as to how to string everything other than just stringing everything on 2 long wires and having to gently and specifically store it all! LOL. I'm slowly making my way through all of your videos- Keep up the beautiful work!!

I like to follow the journey and evolution of your creations! Vs if you’re trying to cram it all into one, it’s too much for one video. Also, you may not be satisfied with the level work or craftsmanship because you’re trying to meet unrealistic time constraints. The best projects take time so it’s nice to see work you’re happy with. The jewelry and gloves look very nice, honestly most of the things you pointed out, I wouldn't have even noticed (including the different metal colors, and in all honesty it makes sense that they wouldn't match because all of those items come from different characters throughout the book anyway). It is cool to hear the critics though so I know what to look for when/if I ever do it myself. As always your work is amazing and I am so excited to see the reveal.

Use paper over your seams as you sew it will keep the machine from sucking it in
I only found your channel a few days ago, but I've really enjoyed bingeing your Alice cosplay video's! I think the format works really well, this way you can show a lot more details for every piece instead of just a short clip in one big project-video. And I've learned so much from these video's! I love how you explain techniques like the ballet-skirt-loops. I've never had any training for sewing and I'm slowly convincing myself to start on a (historically inspired) cosplay because it seems so much fun, and all these small techniques will definately help me at some point!

Gorgeous work! What gauge wire do you prefer to use for beading like you did in the necklace?
I’m honestly not sure what gauge is was since I’ve had it for ages but I’d guess around a 20?
I learned that the easiest way to make gloves with gussets (those long strips) is sewing them by hand.
yeah i probably should have sewn these by hand, but I think with a more substantial fabric the machine wouldn't have been an issue!
@@moth.faerie Probably. I most likely had user error every time I used a machine to see them. It was hard for me to sew the gussets on with such a small seam allownace
@Rosie Santrach I usually use an industrial machine now, which I think makes it a lot easier! I always have a hard time doing small fiddly things with my home machines

thank you! I was using a piece of silk organza as a press cloth so that my iron didn't melt the velvet!
i used the same exact fabric as u used for the gloves for some sleeves, and it was really hard to sew for me too. my machine kept ripping the thread.
aah yeah it seems like maybe hand sewing it is the way to go for all those tiny seams! it stitched pretty ok with long straight seams at least 😅
Just an idea, maybe some washi tape could stabilize and decorate the glass bottle?
The irrational part of my mind keeps expecting things to fall through the dark spaces on your table covering. 😅
