Victorian women were so practical and yet very feminine. Love it. Great info thank you.

I love all that clinking and clacking the chatalaines make.

I feel like the modern version of this would be the fanny pack. It's an external pocket on a belt. While not as pretty in general they fit the modern style quite well.

I hate rummaging around in a fanny pack, but it does keep things from getting lost. Tried a neck bag, but that just lead to headaches. Still not satisfied, but Ive always loved these. I wonder which came first, the chatelaine or the tool belt?

A few years ago, my friend gifted me a lovey beaded bag like that. She got it from an antique shop. I love it so much. I don’t wear it as a pocket the way it’s meant to be worn. I added a longer chain and use it as a crossbody evening bag. I love it so much. There was a tiny tortoiseshell comb and a thimble inside. It’s adorable.

Oh my, I have been waiting on this video! I am so happy you were finally able to make it, and your belt turned out beautifully. I am currently reading "First Wheel In Town' and am enjoying it VERY much! I highly recommend this book for anyone that is interested in the Victorian era!

I don’t dress authentically historical or anything, but I did make the change to handmade prairie skirts, a petticoat and hand sewn shirts. I’ve thought about using a chatelaine to go with all of that, as a homemaker / housewife, they just seem so useful!

I love the reference to L M Montgomery! I grew up on the Anne books, of course, but the Blue Castle is a favorite of mine. It strikes me as one you would enjoy, if you haven't read it before!

So I actually thought I came up with the idea of multiple chains on a clip. Then I came across the chatelaine. I believe it was the vikings that first came up with the idea
Only problem that I havnt yet solved is how to stop my skirt from falling down due to the weight.

Regarding pockets: Dr Lucy Worsley (British historian and chief curator of Historic Royal Palaces) mentioned an old rhyme which goes "Lucy Locket lost her pocket, Kitty Fisher found it, all that was left was the ribbon wrapped around it" (I'm reciting from memory hopefully verbatim). Dr Worsley and Mrs Chrisman are resources I would recommend to each other.

    • @WitchOracle

That rhyme refers to a very different kind of pocket 😉
