I Made a Flower Crown for a Historically Inspired Victorian Alice in Wonderland Cosplay

- I'm easing myself back into this project with Alice's Flower Crown! I'm still working on the skirt and getting it to the point where I can put it back together, so in the meantime I thought I'd work on one of the accessories. I was able to use a lot of the millinery techniques I learned in grad school and built a wire frame to make a sturdy base for all the flowers and beading on this head piece. It's a pretty simple project but looks exciting and was fun to make! I made the bow detachable to I have more versatility and can use each piece for other things in the future. This is part eleven of my series making Hannah Alexander's Alice in Wonderland design and my research and inspiration are drawn very heavily from mid-Victorian fashion, specifically the 1860s, since that's when Alice in Wonderland was written and what seems to most match Hannah's drawing.

Honey Bee seems like an adorable, yet mischievous, addition to the family.
This head piece is beautiful. I absolutely love how committed to being extra this costume design is. She could have settled for a bow, a flower crown, or a tiara, but she saw the potential in the power of all three combined.
Omg I knowww, some people think her designs are too much but I love how extra they are!!
A bag of flowers = instant serotonin. Flower crowns just have that effect on me. Yours is gorgeous, it's amazing that you can apply your knowledge and see the progress. Honey Bee is such a sweetheart, I can't believe he's naughty! (Except that I can, he's a cat after all.) Looking forward to the next part of your project!
Yesss I love looking at piles of flowers haha and he is very sweet and affectionate and also loves to knock everything on the floor lol
Omg honeybee is so cute
Haha he’s very cute when he’s not eating beads rip but he’s a very sweet kitty 😊
@@moth.faerie awwww
It looks amazing!! I think it's so extra in the BEST way possible. The frame makes it more voluminous and come out a lot more than a standard crown and is genius (I'm just here taking notes). It's going to look so perfect atop the rest of the costume! Also I am already in love with Honey Bee his face is just too pure he could never do wrong.
Thank you!! Omg don’t let his cute face fool you he is a TROUBLEMAKER
This is so lovely, there's nothing more instantly mood improving than a flower crown and sparkles. And welcome to Honey Bee!
Thank you! And I so agree sparkles make everything better 😊
wow this is so beautiful! love the height on the blossoms and the tiara like band of gems. Also hello to the cute kitty!
thank you! haha ill tell baby bat you said hello 😊
Making my way through the Alice videos and I am absolutely fascinated by all of the skills you know/have from school. I am learning self taught/youtube and its a long process, but your videos are definitely making me aware of more proper techniques! Heck yeah hooray for progress 💙
yay progress! school definitely sped up the learning process and corrected a lot of my bad habits, but there's so much you can learn without schooling! youtube is definitely a good place to learn and i'm trying to share what I know so people who can't do the tuition/time commitment still have access to the same knowledge 😊
Wow, I’ve never seen beads come together like that! It looks like a tedious but rewarding process. The flower crown looks so beautiful! You did such a wonderful job!
Honey Bee is so cuteee!
thank you! it wasn't too bad until it started breaking apart 😅 playing with beads is really one of my favorite parts of costuming so I don't mind it!
@@moth.faerie I’ve attempted to do necklaces and such before, but never bothered to learn how to tie off the knots neatly or anything. So never quite turned out right (understandably since I was being lazy about it).
One of these days if a cosplay comes up that needs this kind of work, I’ll definitely be referencing this video for the bits you show plus the materials (such as the wire that won’t shatter in your hands).
I had the same problem with beading until my aunt taught me about tigertail wire. It's nylon chord coated in a thin metal and you use crimping beads to finish the ends. There is a special tool for it but it's really not necessary. I used my standard beading pliers and they always worked fine.
this is the knot that I always do! i.pinimg.com/originals/12/04/b8/1204b8d8204a8eb1f3639ccc3bcfe73e.jpg (hopefully that link works)
for necklaces I use jewelry cord that you can get in the jewelry section at Joanns or Michaels or I'll do eye pin links where it's more like a chain of links. I used the wire for the tiara so it'll stand up by itself, but I think for hanging jewelry a fabric or nylon cord works really well!
I've used tigertail before and I've always found it really slippery but it's been a while so maybe I should give it another shot! I do love how crimp beads look much cleaner than tying knots 😊
Looks amazing! And congrats on your new furbaby!
Do you have a pair of flush cutters? It will make life a lot easier/precise cutting the wire. I bought a pair specifically for craft-type projects after using one of my ESD safe pairs...and then contemplated how the heck it took me so long to realize this was a much better option (used them all the time when I was working in a failure analysis lab).
I don't have flush cutters but I am going to go buy one literally right now, thank you so much for the suggestion!
I just made my first headpiece crown thingy. Its so not put together with the same quality as yours. Yours is absolutely stunning!
Thank you! And my first few were definitely rough haha so don’t worry it took lots of practice to get here
That is a beautiful crown. Love the colours. Love the flash. Well done, you.
Glad to hear the kittens are getting along.
- Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown
Thank you! And yes haha kittens getting along is so much better for my ability to actually get work done 😅
@@moth.faerie We have a couple of 5 year old guinea pigs who insist on separate cages. The struggle. She is real...
The volume on that crown is really something. Just lovely.
@@stevezytveld6585 aw thank you! and I love guinea pigs! I thought they were supposed to be really social? I guess everyone needs their own personal space sometimes haha
@@moth.faerie GP's tend towards social. But I guess once you reach 'old lady' status, you get to pretty much dictate your own terms. One's an introvert, one's an extrovert. Whatchagoingtodo.
Such a beautiful flower crown! I don't know why but they've always intimidated me XD (making one I mean)
thank you! aah don't be intimidated! they're not hard to make and there's so many styles, you should definitely go for it! 😊
Honey Bee!!! Such a cute new friend! That flower crown is gorgeous. Love your attitude toward practice and appreciating how your skills have grown over time! Really excited to see the skirt beading, it sounds like its going to be incredible!!
Thank you! Fiiinally done with the beading and I'm super happy with it! Though it's probably one of those things that I'll look at in a few months and think 'hmmm could use more beads...'
It came out so beautifully!
Thank you!
Very pretty 😀
I seriously love your video~ I’ve been a fan since your Yumeko series and I always look forward to your posts :)
Aw thank you so much this is the sweetest thing 😭❤️ I’m so happy you like my videos, thank you for being around and watching them!
That headpiece is stunning! I absolutely love it!
Thank you!
Pretty cool, watching you just doing the thing! I still love the colors for this project.
Thank you!
love how it turned out. :}
thank you!
WOW. So beautiful. This is what I wanted when I made my fairy headpiece. Become alot smaller and didn't know anything how to make it. Used a storage find headband as base and was way to small to build it big. But atleast it was sturdy and I was able to dance a all night without it fall apart.
thank you! ah yeah there are definitely limitations with found object crafting, but I'm glad it turned out well for you!
Love the tiara, is there a way for you to do a more in depth video of how to make one similar to the one you made in this video? Thanks in advance ☺️
Any specific part? I don’t know that I’ll ever be recreating this unless a costume I make calls for a similar one, but if there’s a specific piece that you’re interested in I can try to work it into an original costume in the future!
myghaaaaaad you deserve more views! I love your vids! hehehehe
thank you so much, this is so sweet!
HoneyBee babyyyyyy I love himmmmmm~
This is so cool! Also hi i randomly discovered your channel a few days ago and have been watching a bunch of your videos - they’re really fun and it’s cool to see this project coming together. You’re truly so skilled 🙌
(i also have a 4 month old kitten who loves chaos lol it’s a time)
Aw thank you! I’m glad you like my videos and happy to have you here! 😊💕
❤️💕❤️
Bead casualties are always so frustrating
I knoooow especially bc I ordered these on the internet so it would take so long to replace 😭
If you don’t mind me asking, what did you major in school?
I was a neuroscience major in undergrad but I have a masters in costume production 😊
Is this Alice inspired by Nordic, Slavic traditions? This looks like a Russian, Estonian, Latvian, Finnish origins?
I don't believe so, I think it's mostly inspired by mid-Victorian fashion, but I could be wrong! The original designer is Hannah Alexander!
Hi honeybee, stomach flus suck I hope it wasn’t atrocious
it wasn't great, but it's over now!
