Making a Historically Inspired Alice in Wonderland Cosplay | Sewing the Skirt Part One

- Part one of making the skirt for my sorta historically accurate Victorian Alice in Wonderland cosplay! My plan for the skirt is a little all over the place since usually I sew, then embellish but because I want to emboss the fabric for more depth and a lot of the embellishment needs to go on before it gets pleated up. This means we're going to be skipping around a lot and this also needs to be two parts so I don't end up boring everyone with an hour long video 😅 So we're doing some fun fabric modification and another fitting this week, plus some fun (not fun) surprises about my undergarments. This is part ten of my series making Hannah Alexander's Alice in Wonderland design and my research and inspiration are drawn very heavily from mid-Victorian fashion, specifically the 1860s, since that's when Alice in Wonderland was written and what seems to most match Hannah's drawing.

Everyone is commenting such lovely things about the embossing and crinoline and I'm just here to say every time you say "redistribute" my brain says "wealth" any way, I'm loving this series
You hair is super-cute in your intro! Also, I am really impressed that you embossed an entire 18 million yards of fabric - I once did one pattern on a hem and ALMOST DIED. It looks amazing!
Thank you so much! Omg it took so long I watched so many RUclips videos haha but I think it was worth it!
Also what were you embossing??? I love hearing about other people's projects!
I absolutely adore the embossing on that skirt!! The way the light catches the detail is so so so pretty! Excited to see the skirt in its fully trimmed glory. The Baby Bat content in this video is top tier lol. Hope the move continues to go well!
Haha always here to deliver the baby bat content 🥰 working steadily on the embroidery it's taking so long rip
Couldn't agree more!
The fabric went from lovely to gorgeous once you embossed it! What a cool thing to know how to do! I now want to try and work with velvet even though I fear crushing the pile...
Thank you! And you should definitely try it, no worries about accidentally crushing the pile when it’s on purpose haha
I've never heard of embossing velvet like that; it looks so good!!!!
Thank you!
The fabric looks so lushious! This is so wonderful to watch. All the swoosh. Also, had no clue that is how embossing is made. Makes sense though with the little I know about ironing velvety-fabrics (which is a few youtube videos of knowledge....)
It's surprisingly nice for $10/yard poly velvet! There's also so much cool fabric modification stuff you can do with velvet!! I never knew about any of it until I had to take a fabric mod class for school 😅
That embossing is amazing! Also your lemon top and green skirt outfit was so cute!
Thank you so much! 🥰
Saw one of your videos in my recommended (the dress mock-up I think?) and binged the entire series today 😂 but your videos are like??? by far my favorite of the Disney princess event thing going on! Your videos are so fun to watch and the dress is turning out amazing. Glad I found the series before it’s finished!
Aw thank you so much I'm so glad you like them!! 😊
oh my god that embossing is so beautiful! This has given me some new inspiration for making the jacket I've been wanting to incorporate some sort of brocade in, but the pricetag always stopped me, so this is a great solution!
Your owner (the cat) seems to enjoy the feel of the fabric of your dress.
Btw- I say owner because let's face it, we are slaves to our cats. We have to pay for everything we provide to them but they tell us when and in some cases how to do what they want and/or demand from us. Yet, we are blissfully blessed by the attention that our furry owners give to us.
I had no idea you could emboss velvet, I just never thought of how they create fabrics like that, just chalked it up to the many fabric making mysteries 😉😂 very cool! It looks gorgeous.
haha commercially embossed velvet is done really similarly just on a giant scale with big rollers! I didn't know how it was done until we learned about it in my fabric modification class, so many cool things to do with fabric!
Hey, I think I have a solution to your uneven crinoline. Try looking at a double pannier crinoline. Originally they were used to support those heavy French court dresses then later on they were adapted to accentuate and support the bum bustle. Now my theory is that the pannier will carry the heavy weight of the fabric and stop the foreword swing. This is done by taking away the hoop factor from the front and anchor on the back. Patterns of fashion by Janet Arnold are great as references.
I’ll look into that, thank you for the suggestion! Do you think it would accentuate the width more side to side though? I really love the look of the mid Victorian “dropped into the middle of a circle” kind of dress haha
@@moth.faerie hey, it shouldn’t as long as you shorten the sides and make the back more of a semi circle. Think of a fan shape. Note of warning: the framework has to be heavier/sturdier. Can’t wait to see how you go! We are here rooting for you!
I never knew what embossing was! Thank you for showing it!
You’re welcome! I’m glad I could help!
The embossing??????!!!!!! Absolutely incredible, I watched that part at least three times, it is just so fascinating and I have not see anyone emboss their own fabric! Your attention to detail is astounding! what a beautiful project!
ah thank you so much! haha it took ages so I'm glad it's appreciated!
I am now going to find a reason to emboss some velvet! So neat!!
yesss it's such a cool technique, I love how it adds so much dimension to the final product
That fabric! So satisfying to watch. The shade is so lush and beautiful. I never heard of embossing in terms of fabric, good to learn something new. Do you think it's possible to put that extra string in your crinoline at the mid-tight level? Having something right behind knees sounds very uncomfortable, to be honest. Hopefully, repleating will work. Are you comfortable working with your hair down? Mine always ends up where it isn't supposed to be. And of course Baby Bat is a queen!
I think the bottom of the cage crinoline only hits about mid/low thigh so hopefully it won't be right behind my knee! I agree, it definitely sounds uncomfortable 😅 I'm also hoping repeating will work! I don't usually notice my hair when I leave it down but I do prefer it to be in braids! Usually if it's down when I'm cutting or machine sewing it's because it's still drying haha. If I'm doing a lot of hand sewing I'll leave it down for the camera then put it up the rest of the time but that's a secret shh
Yasss hopefully the supplies arrive soon!!
Learned so much about understructures
I got them and was able to move on! Now I'm working on embroidery for the next few days 😊
First off, your lemon shirt is so cute! Second off, I did not realize that was how embossing worked. Goes to show I know next to NOTHING about all the details of the craft. The skirt looks stunning already, and you haven't even added all the details yet. Thank you for sharing! Now I am getting all kinds of (vague) ideas of things I want to make.
Thank you! And its ok to not know things, everyone starts knowing nothing and now you do know it 😊 also id love to see whatever you make!!!
@@moth.faerie Very true! I'm excited to do more research on the process and to come up with something cool. IF, big if, it ever happens I will show you the end
results xD
@@KittieRoses yes please do!! and if you need any pointers or just like need help figuring out what to google please feel free to ask!
@@moth.faerie that’s so nice! Thank you, I will keep that in mind!
I've never seen someone emboss fabric like that before - it is so cool.
And I have definite cat envy - I swear everyone who makes sewing videos on here also has very adorable pets.
The first time I saw embossed fabric in class it was mind blowing it seriously transforms cheap velvet! Haha is sewing even possible without a pet helper?
@@moth.faerie I do my best, although the whole process would be a lot cuter with one.
That was amazing!!You have gained a subscriber!!!
Thank you so much! Glad to have you here 🥰
@@moth.faerie :)
That embossing is so fantastically done. Didn't even now you could do it like that. :}
thank you! I learned about it in grad school and my mind was blown haha it's such a cool technique to really transform cheap velvet!
I know I swore off the crawly monster that is velvet...but this makes me want to play with velvet. TTATT
ah haha it's not too bad if you take it slow!
*picks up cute kitty*
11.5 seconds later * Eject! Eject! Eject!*
Hahaha literally every time
Your work ethic and patience is commendable ! I look forward to your every instalment, and to see your lovely kitty too.I’m working on an Edwardian Cruella de vil now, though progress is a bit slow because of the country I living going into lockdown again lols
Thank you so much that's such a nice thing so hear! Haha more meaningful than when people assume it's innate talent 😋 Edwardian cruella sounds so cool! Do you have an Instagram or somewhere youre posting it? I'd love to see! I feel like a lot of places should be going back into lockdown for how many antivaxxers we have here unfortunately but I hope your progress is able to pick up!
Echoing everything everyone has already said! I also love your editing & explanations - you have very very watchable, beautiful videos!
Thanks Maggie!!! Congratulations on graduating!!
Yeah, I'm so glad I found this channel. I predict that it will grow quite fast because the content is great and the production value is way higher than the short time would suggest!
@@hernameispekka_Rebecca thank you so much!
Hi there, I know this might be a little too late but here’s a suggestion that might help with you weight problem. I think that instead of just using tape as an anchor, you should instead attach panel inside the skirt, which would then stay behind your thighs I would presume, and keep the crinoline from distorting in both directions. That way it becomes less uncomfortable and awkward feeling because of it covers more surface area behind your legs compared to a piece of twill tape. It’s sort of like how some lobster tail bustles in the 1980s were constructed and I think also some bustled crinolines were constructed with this back leg panel, although I would be wrong with the second example.
Anyways hope this suggestion helps.
I actually haven't done the tape yet so not too late! 😅 A panel sounds like... a lot more work haha so I'm going to try the tape first then if that doesn't work a panel will be my next plan! Thank you for the suggestion!!
The embossing on the skirt looks so nice! It's shiny and gives it so much texture. The color is lovely too. Was it very finicky to iron the design without overlap or large empty gaps? Anyway the result is amazing. I really look forward to see the final result.
thank you! because this design is pretty abstract i didn't have any issues with overlap or gaps, I imagine if it was a more geometric design it would have been much more annoying
I'm in awe at the speed of this process!! And the quality!! That embossing is GORGEOUS on that fabric, even if we must pour one out for all the time it took 😭. What con will you be wearing this to? I would love to see it in person 😍😍 though I feel we are probably in different con areas
Thank you so much! I'll be wearing it to katsucon as long as it still happens lol but I'll probably wear it to other cons too, to make all the effort worth it 😅
Beautiful work. The embossing on the fabric is so lux. I love the shine and shimmer it gives.
I've always wanted an excuse to try embossing. Maybe, once I get out of the mock-ups for the 3 projects I'm kinda stuck on, I'll finally try it. I found this French-blue velvet that I think will work nicely for the AD cape. Do you think a clapper would help with the cooling process?
If you want to get extra fancy you could try carving your own lino blocks for the design (just make sure to wood-glue the lino to something stable, like a painting MDF board they sell at the art shop - the lino likes to curl when you get it wet).
If you go to the hunting and fishing section of Walmart, you will find fishing weights (back in the day they were lead weights). Basically, they're just round solid balls of metal that have built-in eyelets you could use to sew to the cage.
- Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown
Thank you! And that sounds gorgeous for the cape! A clapper would definitely help, though it might be better to use something with a little squish to get into all the crevices of the stamp? I don't have a clapper and I used my ham and found that worked pretty well! And was less painful than using my fingers 😅
The lino blocks sound like fun! Maybe I'll try that if I have a more specific design need 😊 and thank you for the tip about the weights! Definitely would never have thought of that
@@moth.faerie You're typing with one of the odder skill-sets around - mixed media art, gardening, fishing, baking, cooking, not-for-profit media-whore, and enough craft and fine art workshops to fill a bus... buddy in uni called me "the matchmaker of stuff"..
The hardware and outdoor stores are full of things you can use that the boys never thought of... I wonder if you could use fishing line as part of the cage set-up...
Lino block printing is tres fun. It also works with fabric paint (Lizscapism's {sp?} partner carved and printed the fabric for her Worth Halloween gown). It's a good skill to have in your back pocket. Any questions, drop me a line...
For my cape, maybe a line of Celtic scroll-work for an edge border... I'm letting everything sit in a time-out while I put the balcony garden in for the season.
I LOVE that embossing technique!! Did you invent it? I will definately be using it.
Definitely did not invent it but thank you! I learned it in grad school in a fabric modification class 😊
I didn't know you could do embossing like that!!!
Imo I feel like the front of the skirt is too high, needs another 1.5" lower.
ah haha well too late now, this costume's been finished for months and i'm definitely not going back now 😅
@@moth.faerie I didn't see the date of the vid, haha
Have you considered a bussel cage?
hmm do you mean like a lobster tail bustle? I'm not sure that would have quite the side-to-side width I'm looking for, but thank you for the suggestion anyways!
It doesn't have to stop at just the back it could be a combo of back and sides. I was thinking of the cage bussel in combination with the hoops.
