Tape Measure Hack / Trick

  • Did a lot of renovations during the summer and one of the most frustrating experience was using the tape measure on a vertical wall, especially while on a ladder.
So I made a simple pencil holder that worked well, but had a few limitations, like the pencil was hard to be replaced or sharpened and also it needed a pointer for precise measurement.
In this video I'm making an improved version of it, from some scrap square tubing. It has all the features I needed, accurate pointer, release screw for the pencil and it can also use markers or metal scribers.

People often think that getting angry is a bad thing. I get cross with the way tape measures fall all over the place and spring back, but you have used your frustration to energise your creativity - Well Done !!!

Just made one, works great, for circles too I left the pointer thick as half a drywall screw so one edge of the pointer works this way and the other side of the pointer compensates for the screw thickness when making circles on the hook.

Loved watching this. My father and grandfather were always making their own tools, jigs, shop accessories, etc.... always be hand. Watching this reminded me of them and the creative design work they would undertake.

Fun fact: The yeti is based off of Lenny from "Of Mice and Men" who was large and strong but had the intellect of a child. He would often ask his only friend, George, to tell him about their pipe dream of a farm with lots of rabbits which Lenny would hold and pet. But Lenny had no understanding of his strength and the fragility of things and would have crushed and killed the bunnies like the Yeti almost does to Bugs.

Thanks for sharing all your amazing work. You're an artist turning wood. Great thing about this idea is the ability to lock the tape on the measurement and still mark accurately when it's difficult to see the tape in situ (and one handed!). It may be possible to use several screws (like the one used at 3:56) to attach the guide to the edges of the case on the other side and keep the belt clip.

Yea, when it comes to hacksaws, it's worth to buy the good blades. A $5 blade can cut better and last you longer than a few packs of cheap chinese ones. This particular one is Pilana brand, not sure if it's available worldwide.
