Making a Half Moon Knife

In this video I make a small knife for leather work from an old rusty circular saw blade. It was an old blade, without carbide teeth, so the steel was hard and could be heat treated.
The major problem was that the metal warped during heat treating and I tried to straighten it while it was warm, as I've seen them do on Forged in Fire... didn't go so well for me, the blade broke and I had to change the design of the knife.
I used mostly hand tools, which was a challenge. This took a lot longer that it would've been with power tools but it was much more enjoyable overall.
The handle was made from olive wood, repurposing an old cutting board.

That time when you forget you were subscribed to a channel and then remember why you did in the first place. Beautiful work, mate. Cheers.
literally me
😂
Me, commenting “awesome video, you got a new subscriber” then realized I’m already subscribed. That has happened to this (me) idiot a couple times 🤦🏻♂️🤣
Love the combination forge/barbecue grill! And I like the final shape! It makes it unique.
Thanks a bunch!
@@TheSmallWorkshop hey! It’s been so long since you last posted! Glad to see your back 😊
Not a forge. He was annealing the steel. A forge gets much hotter.
That small break made it especially customized. You created a fantastic blade and I'm sure it cuts leather as it were butter. Great video.
Thank you Chuck!
Absolutely haha
@@DyslexicMitochondria your username made me click on your profile. Your channel is a hidden gem bro
i like that this is a channel doesn't have bots in their comment
I don't know m8, that "first" guy looks very suspicious!
@@TheSmallWorkshop bruh out of 10 "first" comments, 14 have 0/1 like
Missed your videos dude! Gotta say, I love seeing your older creations getting into the videos.
Thanks for sticking around m8!
the final shape of the tool kinda grew on me the more i watched this video, greta job as always!
The fact that you can free hand that sketch blows my mind, then YOU BRING IT TO LIFE!?!
Probably my favorite video he has uploaded
This is such a "laymans accessible" process. I have everything I need and have been stuck on my lack of a forge. But you have inspired me to give it a go. Beautifully filmed and very entertaining as well. Nice one.
Awesome to see something of this quality made with hands tools!
Dude, so happy to see you posting again!
(a neighbour in your city :-) changed my RUclips name because of problems)
Multumesc!
@@TheSmallWorkshop cu mare plăcere! Toate cele bune îți doresc!
“I’ve made this mistake before…”
As a former prosthetics and orthotics fabrication specialist, I can confidently say that I’ve used a drill press more than once… and I have too.
Wonderful how you handled all the challenges in the video and on the way to the video. Glad you're back. Enjoyed this transformation a lot!
Thank you m8! It was nice talking to you on the other site. You have great content as well, keep up the good work!
Красивая деревяшка и нож сам не плох. Не пропадай так на долго.
Yippieee ... It lives again. .. Feels good, to see you back after this long time
I was just watching your videos, wondering where you have been, and then you post this. My man!
Thanks for still being around m8!
Wewww.. its really awesome master 👍👍👍👍... Success for your channel.. regard 🇮🇩🇮🇩🇮🇩🇮🇩🇮🇩✌️✌️✌️🙏🙏🙏🙏
my dumb ass would have pushed too hard on the band saw and cut off my finger lol
beautiful craftmanship
Hmm...you got me thinking with this one. Got a bunch of old handsaws that cost me under £1 each. Wonder what I could make from them...
Really enjoyable and glad to see you back. Please don't push too hard and take care of yourself.
Well... Now i'm hungry for sausages, thx a lot.
:D
Me forgetting there was something in that fire:Why the hell you grilling sauseges
Me remembering the knive:hey at least give me some

The return of the king
This is my favorite he has uploaded its a shame it doesn’t have that many views
Yup, the channel pretty much died at that point. Every new video performed worse than the one before.
Underrated channel
Good to see you back!
this is amazing, and it truly is a beautiful knife! thank you for this great, great video!
I missed your videos! I'm always awed by your expertise. Makes me want to try it myself, maybe one day!
like how you mostly use hand tools
Sorry to hear you've been unwell mate, certainly hope you get back to full capacity very soon. Don't rush, take your time and get better properly. Oh, and this is a brilliant vid! Thanks so much.
Don't rightly know whether or not it was intended, but take a blowtorch or forge (low heat) and bring the metal to a gold finish with heat to prevent the metal from being so hard it snaps. This is called Tempering. You can likely research the exact steel type to find the proper temperature for your desired Rockwell hardness (usually about 56 for my knives) to maintain its edge as well as prevent snapage. It'll be tough but not brittle. You've taught me some things I didn't know in this video, so I reasoned it would be right to return the favor (assuming I'm not making an ass of myself because you already knew) to a fellow bladesmith. Great knife and great cinematography as well. Cheers!
@miasma wut

In some way, it's satisfying. I love these types of videos. Keep it up!
This channel is absolutely beutiful, i got into watching your content lately and it is pure gold(or pure steel i guess lol). The way you film and edit theese creations and restorations is really incredible and is what differs you from the other flashy edited restoration/creation videos. Please keep making good content, don't leave us again!
Omg mam when the hot dogs got put on, I lost it lol
Nice knife. We shared this video in our homemade tools forum this week 😎
Great half-moon with an amazing break-up recovery ! I could never suspect from final product it was not the initially intended shape...
Did you temper the blade at some point ?

Yes your back
Hope so!
It was good to see hand tools used and not going into a engineering workshop well
Great job..now I want to bbq sausages🤣
Welcome back :)
many thanks..great video sir.., im a leather worker and currently dont have a half moon knife,,, i also have very little knowledge regarding metalwork but would like to try something like this,, im curious as to why you heated the metal in the furnace though, do you not think that just grinding ,sharpening and polishing the edge would be sufficient to cut leather or do you definately reccomend sticking it in the furnace,, if so, im kinda screwed as ive no furnace..ha ha..
What I do not understand about the Americans is why they burn the food in the barbecue, they snatch it or burn it, the meats or sausages on the grill are made with hot embers, heat not direct fire on what we cook, it is a piece of good advice not attack, the knife and the page, excellent greetings from Uruguay 🇺🇾
Nice
Thanks
Fun to watch...
Thanks! Sadly not many people liked it...
@@TheSmallWorkshop ...hard to believe...I enjoyed the whole thing, satisfying build and great editing and videography too!!
