Ya know I noticed that too about his sketches. 😊 All-around artist and craftsman. I watch this and now I want to try but don’t have any of those tools. I better stick to drawing and just enjoy the next guys’ work.
@goddangitbobby5560almost every person in the USA/EU has had a tetanus shot within the past 10yrs... every year. Only way to really avoid it is to basically never go to the hospital or doctors office. Ever.
Second video I've watched, I love the 'warts and all' approach with what can go wrong. We're all constantly learning and we all do things in different ways. It's what's rightand works for you that counts.
Interesting design; turned out well. For my own, I made a blade with a “tang” that went the full length of the handle and mounted the wood handle on the top side only; sort of a hybrid between a Japanese steel blade knife that normally wouldn’t have a handle and a western style marking knife with a wood handle. I like it because it has no handle on the underside to get in the way if I want to use it with something thick.
That's why I love lathe work, whether it be metal or wood, as watching the material change like that is so satisfying. Bringing metal to a chamfer or squaring an end off, ring by ring, or adding oil or wax to wood, on and off the lathe
A coworker was drilling out a hole of some piece of metal, and although he did used a drill chuck, he uderestimated the force of the drill once it got stuck, so he completly smashed his hand against the machine because he didn't let go. Took a few operations and a couple of months to get his hand working again. Another one was wearing gloves for protecting his hand against the drill cuttings untill a big one got stuck in his glove and almost took of his thumb. So the moral of this is that you always keep in mind that a machine doesn't have any remorse and kill or mutilate you in a blink of an eye without saying sorry :).
tallbeard good lord, that’s terrible. I think the moral is to use your goddamn brain and common sense to know that a machine will fucking kill you if you’re not careful. (So, basically your moral but with swearing)
I laughed out loud, when i read your comment "You worry too much"! ;-) Also your circular saw with the unprotected blade makes me nervous, only by looking at it. But hey, safety is boring, isn't it? ;-) The knife is great, it's a little piece of artwork. You're an excellent craftsman with sense for aesthetics. Thank's for sharing this video with us.
Literally two seconds before you mentioned the steel being too soft I had said the same thing!! Freaked me out. No worries, just harden it after you do the work. I usually anneal hard steel to work it and then harden it at the end. Well done, I have subscribed.
the marking knife is absolutely beautiful and goes above and beyond a basic shop project, thank you for sharing your hard work with us,all the best to you and yours :-)
Very nice! Makes me want to make one with my dad. He and my grandfather have always been wood workers, and I have become more and more interested in metal and wood working. Sounds like a great father son project that we could do together. And I bet we could use one of my grandfathers old pieces of metal (saw blades, files or something) to make one of these. The aesthetic is even exactly like the stuff that my grandfather would have made. We can use his old lathe and lathe tools to make the handle. I have a piece of black walnut that might look really nice.
It is just amazing how you made all the job again just because it was soft steel, Im kinda grateful that you took that much of a job, so, new sub, keep the good stuff coming
i like this so much im in the middle of making my own. so far so good although, ive had to take another look at this vid to see how im gona attach the timber part of the handle.
carbide blades have noticeably softer disks (depending on brands). This had carbide edges. industrial size blades are harder even with carbide tips since the stress and speed of the blades are quite high. You can see the second blade has no carbide tips on it, hence the hardness in the whole blade.

Nice work, I came here from my mechanics and I'll tell you what, I'm not disappointed. Fantastic craftsmanship man. You've got yourself a new subscriber 👍👍
I once tried to make a small disk with a hole out of thin sheetmetal. For some reason i made the hole last, after i cut out the circle. I tried holding in down with my fingers. The drill catched and the thing started spinning and almost cut a piece off my Thumb... Just wanted to say be carefull with your fingers! Of course I still do stupid stuff in the shop but I'm a little bit more carefull than before.
The Small Workshop I know this is checky but can you send me one cuz I don't have a lot of money nor the tools to make something like this if you can I would be happy
I love your channel and would like to see more videos uploaded ;-) You really should do a patreon so you can justify the time commitment. I bet you would be surpised at the amount of people willing to give something back :-)
Thanks, I have a patreon account and had it promoted on my channel for a while last year and I only got 1 patron. You are right I was surprised :) As for new content I'm filming last scenes of a new project right now.
Here it is: www.patreon.com/TheSmallWorkshop I'm adding some info to it right now, I think I'll give it another try. At first I planned to give my finished projects as rewards for patrons, but it turned out it was against the rules, so I was kinda disappointed and deleted all the content on patreon.
IMHO: Forget about the rewards. Just make a dedicated video promoting it (for example explain that it helps you staying motivated and makes it easier to justify the time and expenses that go into the production of a video) and mention it briefly at the end of every video (with link directly to it in the videos, not only in the description [most people don't read the description]) and it will work out :-)
Man, I was watching your vid and saw the pruning blade knife and busted out laughing. I thought to myself, maybe I am not the only one using imagination when using other items for blades. I made a couple of them and gave one to a doctor wanting one for deer hunting. Way to go.
I was watching you cut the first piece thinking “man that hacksaw is really going through that steel. Am I buying the wrong stuff”. I’m sorry to say that I was glad I was neither mad, nor a weakling, when you realised the steel proved softer than appropriate for a marking tool. Anyways, great project man.
If you want to prevent a piece from spinning on the drill press you can just put a nail or a screw in your wooden table that will block the movement of the piece if it comes to spin (idk if it's clear, i'm not suggesting to screwing the piece you're drilling, just placing a screw in the table to prevent the spinning)

I didn’t know steel could be soft.
*the more you know*
I mean everything is relative.
Great tool for a nice shop. Looks like you had some other nice hand made items in this video. Great job.
that is some hacksaw, it went through the blade quick or did i miss something, the blade must be soft
ian edge That's when I realized the metal was to soft, I'm glad he noticed before continuing with the protect. It came out nicely
ian edge I was under impression that is the only reason to destroy saw blade (too soft maybe warped?...). but still way too soft for knife edge.
Robert Kajor The saw blade was ptobably not sharp anynore, missing some teeth, etc. It was probably softened for easier use.
just wanted to say the same xD crazy how it goes in like butter
carbide blades have noticeably softer disks (depending on brands). This had carbide edges. industrial size blades are harder even with carbide tips since the stress and speed of the blades are quite high.
You can see the second blade has no carbide tips on it, hence the hardness in the whole blade.
