Making a vintage marking knife

- The design of this marking knife was inspired by a vintage tool.
I thought the way the blade is attached to the handle is much better than the ferrule we use these days, since the tool is narrower and can get easier into tight spaces.
To keep with the vintage look I used copper and left it unfinished so it will develop a patina in time. I also used an old piece of wood for the handle, partially rotten, cracked and full of worm holes, to go with the theme. Хобби

The Small Workshop u should try hardening the steel instead of trying again it really isn’t that hard and u can get away with it with a blow torch or if u are patient enough you can use a bbq lighter and dip it in water

The Small Workshop your saw is super SHARP!
The Small Workshop . Why do not you try wandering Harry Potter?
That is really impressive
I don’t think I can express to you how terrified I am for your fingers.
Especially when he restores the rusty objects. He can get tetanus without gloves or anything. Unless hes got the shot for it.
@@G3n10s1TYalmost every person in the USA/EU has had a tetanus shot within the past 10yrs... every year. Only way to really avoid it is to basically never go to the hospital or doctors office. Ever.
He's not only good at making things, but he's good at drawing TOO! I wish I was this guy
Ya know I noticed that too about his sketches. 😊
All-around artist and craftsman. I watch this and now I want to try but don’t have any of those tools. I better stick to drawing and just enjoy the next guys’ work.

This is half the fun of owning shop equipment - making more equipment and improving the shop.
Really great job on both the video and the project.
I'm 63 now but, I have bought and collected Homemade/Handmade tools for Years especially from Estate Auctions....
Him: what could go wrong
Me: everything
Shut up
@@iffafatima2356 what an iffy thing to say.
Very beautiful tool, I love it
which one
9:47 I did that once on one of my metal work projects at school, thought I was gonna die
11:41 that’s the most satisfying thing I’ve seen all day 😂
That's why I love lathe work, whether it be metal or wood, as watching the material change like that is so satisfying. Bringing metal to a chamfer or squaring an end off, ring by ring, or adding oil or wax to wood, on and off the lathe
Love metalwork, I regret not doing woodwork
IKR u should watch the cleaver restoration video
@@nazbr01 that is not as useful as its satisfying IMO

Look at that brush trying to sneak away
lol
It's like "he's focused on that if I just slowly move then I can escape him and never be used again ah crap too slow" 😂😂😂
"Hmm, I really want a vintage marking knife."
*shops around on the internet, doesn't find one to his liking*
_sigh_ . . . "Okay, I'll just make one."
Why?
Need a tool, make a tool. There is an inherent pride in providing for oneself. Beautiful job.
Excellent
9:44 now you know why we worry
A coworker was drilling out a hole of some piece of metal, and although he did used a drill chuck, he uderestimated the force of the drill once it got stuck, so he completly smashed his hand against the machine because he didn't let go. Took a few operations and a couple of months to get his hand working again. Another one was wearing gloves for protecting his hand against the drill cuttings untill a big one got stuck in his glove and almost took of his thumb. So the moral of this is that you always keep in mind that a machine doesn't have any remorse and kill or mutilate you in a blink of an eye without saying sorry :).
tallbeard good lord, that’s terrible. I think the moral is to use your goddamn brain and common sense to know that a machine will fucking kill you if you’re not careful. (So, basically your moral but with swearing)
@@tallbeard7111 off* ... Took *off* his thumb :D

Sure glad I watched this before I made my first one! Thanks for posting this. Now I have something to shoot for; what a beautiful example.
Second video I've watched, I love the 'warts and all' approach with what can go wrong. We're all constantly learning and we all do things in different ways. It's what's rightand works for you that counts.
it must be amazing to imagine something and literally make it real 🤩👏🏼
This is pure ART. Grettings from Poland...
I don’t know why but my favorite part is when you start carving the wood for the handle sooooo satisfying!!!
Interesting design; turned out well. For my own, I made a blade with a “tang” that went the full length of the handle and mounted the wood handle on the top side only; sort of a hybrid between a Japanese steel blade knife that normally wouldn’t have a handle and a western style marking knife with a wood handle. I like it because it has no handle on the underside to get in the way if I want to use it with something thick.
Always admire your craftsmanship.
8:36 every buildup in every 2016 "epic bass drop " song..
lmaooo finally something original
I didn’t know steel could be soft.
*the more you know*
I mean everything is relative.
I've watched the video about six times. It never gets old. I enjoy it more each time. Thanks for sharing.
Useful art. Love it!
Huge thumb up! I always like your work mate. Keep it up :)

Wow, truly a beautiful piece. Might be one of my favorite builds I've come across on youtube. Excellent craftsmanship.
Coolest marking knife I've ever seen. Has a mid evil look to it. Thanks for making such great projects and videos!!!
Having to remake half the piece all over again and skipping to "back on track" in 10 seconds is practically DIY porn.
😭😂
Lmao 😭🤣
me: ah i can't cut this cardboard it's too HaRd
Man: proceeds to cut metal with a saw
I'm so impressed by how you do everything so precise by the eye. Very cool knife !
Wow watching my third video of yours... Subscribed already! You, sir, are an artist ;)
I've decided, in the future, to make as many of my hand tools as possible so I have been doing a lot of "research" (read: watching RUclips). Your interpretation of a vintage marking knife is really inspiring. I love to use "worthless" wood whenever I can, so it was great to see the firewood handle! Looking forward to more builds in this vein from you. -Mike
I laughed out loud, when i read your comment "You worry too much"! ;-)
Also your circular saw with the unprotected blade makes me nervous, only by looking at it. But hey, safety is boring, isn't it? ;-)
The knife is great, it's a little piece of artwork. You're an excellent craftsman with sense for aesthetics. Thank's for sharing this video with us.
I watch many of these kind of videos and they seem to NEVER use a safety blade 😑 I don't know why the fuck you would do that to yourself!

Cool how long it took
this is awesome, remaking the vintage tools. i love it!
I want one. This is one of the most beautiful tools I have ever seen. If I had a lathe I would try to make one.
This channel is so satisfying.
That's a fine lookin' marking knife.
working with all those tiny metal shavings without gloves... the absolute madman
What a treat to watch your skills in operation.
*in thanos voice* "I use the saw to cut the saw"
its just like i said it to my friends but i said i use the metal to cut the metal

Wdym?
This guy takes real pride in his work.
when i saw you cutting through the first blade like butter, i was like that steel is really soft.
other youtube channels have thousand-dollar tools an here you are making the same types of blades with a hacksaw and a bench vice
12:00
“Hahah yeah baby all finished and varnished”
12:10
“NOOOoooOoooOoOoO”
It is just amazing how you made all the job again just because it was soft steel, Im kinda grateful that you took that much of a job, so, new sub, keep the good stuff coming
Why am I so addicted to these sorts of videos.
that is some hacksaw, it went through the blade quick or did i miss something, the blade must be soft
ian edge That's when I realized the metal was to soft, I'm glad he noticed before continuing with the protect. It came out nicely
ian edge I was under impression that is the only reason to destroy saw blade (too soft maybe warped?...). but still way too soft for knife edge.
Robert Kajor The saw blade was ptobably not sharp anynore, missing some teeth, etc. It was probably softened for easier use.
just wanted to say the same xD crazy how it goes in like butter
carbide blades have noticeably softer disks (depending on brands). This had carbide edges. industrial size blades are harder even with carbide tips since the stress and speed of the blades are quite high.
You can see the second blade has no carbide tips on it, hence the hardness in the whole blade.
**Deadly metal sprung around**
"Whoops!"
"Oh no!,Anyways"

Adam well that escalated quickly!
I love your channel and would like to see more videos uploaded ;-)
You really should do a patreon so you can justify the time commitment. I bet you would be surpised at the amount of people willing to give something back :-)
Thanks, I have a patreon account and had it promoted on my channel for a while last year and I only got 1 patron. You are right I was surprised :) As for new content I'm filming last scenes of a new project right now.
Why did you remove the link then? Give it some time :-)
Was searching for your Patreon account. Only getting an error message when I try to open the link :-/
Here it is: www.patreon.com/TheSmallWorkshop I'm adding some info to it right now, I think I'll give it another try. At first I planned to give my finished projects as rewards for patrons, but it turned out it was against the rules, so I was kinda disappointed and deleted all the content on patreon.
IMHO: Forget about the rewards.
Just make a dedicated video promoting it (for example explain that it helps you staying motivated and makes it easier to justify the time and expenses that go into the production of a video) and mention it briefly at the end of every video (with link directly to it in the videos, not only in the description [most people don't read the description]) and it will work out :-)
You inspire me because now I wanna do this kind of stuff!
this is SUCH a gorgeous tool. automatic subscribe by the quality of it 😍😍
