Designing a unique looking marking knife that's comfortable and works well was quite a challenge. I think I did it, and it was much easier to make the knife, then to design it. I wasn't confident that it would work out, so that's why I made a test one first. I reckon this knife making project turned out pretty cool though, and I was excited to make another.
I also thought it would be great to have a scratch awl and a marking knife all in one tool. I have a metal scriber that is two ended and I like that so that's why I went ahead with that idea.
I've decided to give the new marking knife to one of my supporters on Patreon as I don't need two marking knives and it's a chance to say thank you for their amazing support!
As always I'm happy to answer any questions.

Pask that's awesome. Only advice I have is use contact adhesive instead of epoxy. Any epoxy or super glue can destroy the leather due to the exothermic reaction caused by the curing where as contact adhesive theres none and will stick solid. I'm a leather worker btw lol

Its kinda cool how different tools can leave their own mark or shape that another brand of the same kind of tool would not make it reminds me of how the different ways guitarist tune their guitars can make them sound so much different from people playing the same instrument like Carlos Santana people know the sound of his guitar and I’m not sure what brand of guitar he uses off the top of my head but I’m sure not all brands are capable of creating that sound. Did any of that make sense as a reply to your comment?

There is an advantage to leaving one side completely flat (no leather) for woodworking marking where the craftsman needs to run the knife along the flat side of a thick board to mark another board beneath. A more accurate mark is made as opposed to coming in at an angle.

    • @Yuzuki1337

Coulple of things from a leather crafter….cut your leather a bit wider you can get the excess off with the belt sander. Rough the handle blank for better grip before gluing, I use contact cement or epoxy, both work well. I’d you don’t want the leather for the handle to “walk”, dry fit holding with tape, drill holes through all 3 layers, use glue with long open time and set rivets. So cut, shape, grind the metal. Cut leather to rough shape, dry fit with tape or small clamps and drill holes for rivets or pins. Glue up and set, remove the excess leather with a sander….use the sander to round out the leather edges for burnishing. Anything, and I do mean ANYTHING can burnish leather, as long as friction and heat are created. My favorite is denim or sail cloth. I use carnauba wax for leather and wood. I’d save sharpening until last.

forgive my ignorance, i know nothing of metal working. 2 questions.
    1. why heat treat it?
    2. why check it with a magnet?
    TIA

Not bad at all. Im thinking of using an old file thats too dull its very old 1950s so I'm hopeful its harder then normal steel. I could try and bring it back with lemon juice ive been told by a shop teacher 40 years ago this works i doubt it works on metals made in twian or China.
But good old American metal going to have more carbon. I could just go buy some 4140 stress proof scraps.
It seems to me somone should be selling blanks. Oh one more item you didn't mention an old plane blade I think I've got a few of them from old stanly planes.

So minimalist and beautiful, it's like from another planet.
PS: obligatory "now that's a knife"

This is beautiful, but for some reason, I don't like the idea of something sharp pointing at me when I'm using a marking knife... I would not have it two sided.
    Great craftsmanship, though.
