    Helpful tip so you can remember
    3 times around the wrist
    3 times around the hand
    3 x’s
    3 times around the knuckles
    and that is it if you have any left over just wrap around wrist hand etc.

      expertboxing Hi, do you have advice for what length wraps I should get? I train kickboxing twice a week just for general fitness (not competing or anything). My wrists, thumb & pinky hurt after sessions (especially with upper cuts!) so was advised wraps. I'm petite, about 1.5m tall 🙈 so figured 1.5m wraps would be more than enough, but I've run out of wrap following this video. 😕 Do you *have* to go round 3 times at the wrist etc? Thank you! Great video!

    • @GypsySlyp
      @GypsySlyp 3 года назад +1

      @@fp7770 I'm very late and I'm sure you have had instruction already, but all of the wrap patterns are necessary up until 2:00. Wrapping the wrist is just as important as wrapping the knuckles, and if your wraps cant accommodate the complete pattern then you need to up scale them. Better to chip in for better suited gear, than to experience the pain (and potential injury) of a crumpled wrist.

    Boxing is a strange sport:
    1. Handwraps are to secure the bones in your hand not to protect your knuckles.
    2. Sparring headgear is to protect the fighters hands not to protect the partners head
    actually its been scientifically proven that headgear does little to prevent brain jarring or brain trauma from blows - but it looks good and safe on the amateur kids so that MothersAgainstBoxing lobby doesn't complain too much.

    • @expertboxing
      @expertboxing  11 лет назад +97

      Some clarification for you.
      1. Handwraps protect your hands by HOLDING the bones tightly together. Gloves protect the hands by PADDING the impact. Gloves also protect the opponent by decreasing likelihood of cuts.
      2. Sparring headgear has been shown in some studies to help prevent brain damage. Sure, there are also studies showing the opposite but you can't make a blanket statement. I personally, do prefer sparring with headgear...just as do many other boxers.

    • @feriz12
      @feriz12 10 лет назад +8

      expertboxing I kinda disagree with the first one. Gloves are kinda like a weapon for the attacker than a defense item for the punch receiver. It encourages the attacker to do more power because of the protection it offers to the knuckles, punching with bare hands unconsciously triggers the brain to withdraw the strength because of the trauma it receives due to excessive force; however, thanks to the benefits of the gloves, the limit of the force that could be given is greatly increased by a factor. Thus the headgear and body pads come in action. Don't you agree?
      I love your hand wrap technique by the way, that's how I do mine for years. And I kinda have that big fists problem that you mentioned.

    • @expertboxing
      @expertboxing  10 лет назад +44

      You have a strange way of agreeing with me. The glove is not a weapon because it doesn't make you more powerful. It's not like the glove ALLOWS boxers to punch harder. All boxers will try to punch their hardest to win the fight. I don't know where you read about the "unconsciously triggers" stuff. Boxing has been about wearing gloves for a long freaken time. It's one of the mainstays of the sport. But even in a streetfight, I'd rather be giving punches rather than taking punches and I'll be punching at my hardest.
      As for the headgear, it exists not because of the gloves but because THEY'RE GETTING PUNCHED IN THE HEAD.

    • @feriz12
      @feriz12 10 лет назад +11

      Go measure the impact of your punch with and without the gloves so you could see my point. Gloves DO assist the boxers to punch harder but it doesn't make you stronger. Fists are very fragile. Our body has limiters, the brain automatically retracts power if it knows that it's gonna damage you, try punch a sand bag with and without gloves as well. You'll realize that soon enough.
      Did I ever mentioned that boxing's not about wearing gloves? lol. it's for safety's sake so the boxers won't break their fists because a boxer's fist is his life.
      Why would you take punches in a streetfight, I don't remember saying such a thing. -_-
      and I don't remember telling that headgears exists because of gloves either. -_-
      do read before replying. :\ I WAS not criticizing you on my first reply, I was merely adding some facts.
      and you missed one point on the role of the hand wraps bro, it's to protect the wrist.

    • @expertboxing
      @expertboxing  10 лет назад +31

      You're making a lot of assumptions...(although logical) that are not fact. Plenty of fighters...even ones with far LESS HAND PROTECTION than a boxing glove (ever heard of MMA?) will still punch at 100% output. It doesn't matter if you have protection or not, when the goal is to throw the hardest punch...you can bet we're gonna do it. It's what we've been trained to do for years and years.
      If my goal is to hurt the opponent, I will punch at 100%. If my goal is to protect my hands, I will not punch at 100%. So yeah...having gloves will allow me to punch at 100% without feeling as much pain but it's not like the gloves will actually give me more muscle or make my muscles stronger. And you wanna know something.....? My hands hurt EVEN with the gloves. It's a common problem with many other fighters too...from years of abuse. But we fight through it.
      To even try comparing "punching with gloves" VS "punching without gloves" is not even an option. The scenario of "punching without gloves" would not even exist for you to make your claim. Boxers wear gloves and we train to punch at 100% with them on. I don't need to do your test drill because that scenario would never exist. And you know what? I've punched plenty hard without my gloves....it's called "shadowboxing". Your claim that wearing gloves will somehow psychologically or neurologically enable fighters to punch harder is not true at all. It's logical but it's not even close.
      This ain't a psychology class. It's fighting and you can bet that dudes on the street, dudes in prison, dudes in bars, in the Octagon....are gonna be punching at 150 million percent even if their hands are hurting and even if their hands aren't maximally protected.

    Only thing I would recommend, especially for older people (I'm 50), is to go a little tighter, with a little more wrap, around the wrist. When you hit the bag repeatedly you are going to put serious stress on your wrists, especially around the base of the thumb. You need a lot of support there or you are going to either break a small bone or tear a tendon/ligament. I personally like to make it so there is NO bend at the wrist and you can drive your punches using your whole forearm/wrist/fist and wrapping your wrists tight will help you do this.

    Looks like a great way to do it, Johnny! I didn't realize that going around the thumb like that reverses it and locks it into place. I'm going to have to incorporate that into my wrap style from now on. All I'm doing is hitting the bag, so my biggest concern is my wrist; I mainly wrap for it and not my hand. But I've noticed a solid hand leads to a solid wrist, so its all important. You're a great source of boxing info, bro; appreciate it!

    Great video. I enjoyed the perspective you videotaped how wrapping will look from the individual perspective doing it.
    I will have to disagree with the purposes of the wrap. I was taught the wrap is to protect you hand and knuckles. There is a break so common in,the hand that it is nicknamed a boxer break. This is a break just behind the knuckle.
    A good wrap should prevent this from happening, and protect the bond behind the knuckle joint known as the metacarpal, distal portion.
    With the way I was taught, it was the "X" portion of your video that was the most important part of the wrap. Thus better able to give the metacarpal the support they need to prevent a common break.
    Then the wrap at the end you showed was to eliminate the little bit of wrap you had left. But only after going the "X" as much as you csn.
    Thank you for sharing there are many ways to wrap. I got the feeling from my teacher that there as many ways to wrap as there are people. And, many times how a person may wrap their hands will many times evolve over time. That is if a persons main focus is to give the back of the knuckles the best support they can. Concept with purpose over trying to do the same wrap exactly the same every time.
    I am guessing with you sharing how you wrap, mentioning there are many ways to wrap, and this way is just your favorite way of wrapping, that you had been taught mutable ways to wrap.
    There is or other ways to wrap that I had been told are illegal to the rules. I was told it is nicknamed, Shootgun. The design and porpoise of this wrap is to make your knuckles like brass knuckles.
    It is also one of the reasons a judge will come inspect an individual wrap before a match and will put their initial on the back of the hand, the wrap.
    So, after the match they can also varify the hands were wrapped the same as they were when last inspected. Before a person takes the wrap off after a match.
    The gloves I had been taught was not so much to protect your hands but the persons you were hitting.
    Granted that does not mean the person wrong have any internal head damage. Though it will help many injuries that would happen otherwise, without the gloves.
    Concussions and internal head trauma will happen. There is a strong history from many sports this will happen. Boxing is no exception and had been well established. The same with football even though their helmets give much more protection.
    There are some martial arts that prefer not to wrap to strengthen the knuckles. It is not for everyone. And, I would not recommend it. These are for very hard core training and teaching. The porpoise is to build more calcum, bone at the metacarples and even the knuckle joint. Some of them will also intentually break these bones so that when it heals, it is known fact it will heal back stronger. Though in doing so, one of the drawback is developing arthritis in those areas as well.
