I see the difference. I like it. No need for a 5th wheel in the bed to have to remove whenever you need to use your bed. Good idea.
I've been watching for a while but these goosebox videos, along with the Anderson hitch, got me to subscribe. I've only been on a long trip with my 5th wheel, 2004 KZ Sportsman 33, a couple of times. After an 8 or 10 hour day on the road the chucking and bucking really added to my fatigue. Short trips are all I plan anymore. These look worth trying to me. I'd like to go on longer trips in the future, maybe go full time...
Thank you so much for reviewing them objectively and making quality videos!
You immediately answered the question about leverage and stress points! Great video
Very informative, I'm looking at the Reese system for my 5th wheel too. It'd be nice to use my cattle trailer setup with my camper. Keep making the great videos and travel safely.
I bought a 16K Gooseball for our Montana 5th wheel and I love it. Pulls great and so easy to hook up. No hitch to take up space in my truck bed.
K, now I see the real difference between other gooseneck adapters and the Goosebox, it's in the air suspension. That is slick! Thank you for posting.
looks like a nice pin box setup. I've considered going into this method, but I had a few considerations that changed my mind.
I ran across I think one or two states that allow a passenger inside a fifth wheel and specifically not a goose neck while driving down the road.
I do not intend to drive with passengers in the trailer but it made me consider what makes the laws different for gooseneck.
After looking at several hitches oem aftermarket, I saw that fifth wheel hitches spread the load being attached to the truck frame and most can handle larger angles of tilt. Gooseneck hitches are mounted to a small frame area. It became a serious consideration that when in a accident I'd rather have a fifth wheel connection, if it decreases the chance of the RV coming loose, And into the cab or striking something else. On the flip side A major drawback to a fifth wheel hitch is you can be in a hurry or distracted forget to drop the landing gear. And release the fifthwheel latch pullout and have the trailer crash down
I prefer the kingpin over ball because it’s stronger and safer, also use of kingpin is considered full frame connection and your allowance for passengers to ride in trailer during travels is legal. And with a ball you couldn’t do that. I know a slider hitch is heavy and takes up space but it sure is nice to have when getting into tight camping spots, we even used a slider in a long bed truck and there wasn’t a back in spot we couldn’t get into. But a good informative video..👍🏻
Actually, depending on the components, goose balls can be rated higher than 30,000 lbs. while a 30,000 lb. 5th wheel hitch is about the maximum you can get for these diesel pickup trucks.
What state let's you ride in a trailer being towed?
Loved the video when I buy my fifth wheel I’ll do the same set up .... removing the ball from the bed of the truck is simple and easy
I have had the 20K Goosebox for 3 years on my 40' Carbon Toyhauler and absolutely love it. IMO it is the best hitch on the market when you factor in ride comfort and bed access...there is nothing that compares. Another bonus is you never have to worry if the jaws on a traditional 5er hitch are fully locked...no chance of your 5er falling off and damaging the bed of your truck or RV. The only drawback is it is a little harder to line up, but after time it becomes a non-issue.
Nice post. Thanks for explaining. Keep up the great work! Love the channel!
Both the gooseneck adapter and the Goosebox would apply the same amount of torque to the frame of the coach if the gooseneck connection points between the two setups are the same distance below the bottom of the coach. Just because the Goosebox is further forward and goes down at an angle does not change the torque applied to the frame. However the shock absorbing functions built into the Goosebox would be a significant improvement to just adding a gooseneck adapter to the pin box.
Agreed, shock absorbers reduce the high G loads when you hit one of those bone jarring bumps.
Bill, you are absolutely correct on this. The angle, shape or configuration of the connecting pieces makes no difference. The torque or moment applied to the frame has only to do with the moment arm (the vertical distance to the ball; which is much greater than a normal 5th wheel hitch). The big advantage here is the dampening you get from the air bag and shocks. I'm buying one. :)
Had the goose box for 2 years on my 44’ toyhauler. No problems.
I have this exact setup. I love it. Virtually, no chucking. No 5th wheel hitch in the bed. I really don't feel the trailer moving behind me. If I do feel it, it's slow suttle bounce on bumps. If your truck hits a pot hole, the vibrations don't transmit to the trailer, and vise versa. Love it, love it.
I love that hitch when I finally find the camper for me and my family I will be buying that one.
Your explanation on reaction forces is 100% accurate
Thank you ! I had been wondering about this setup.
Love the video really good explanation. Will you ever do a video on the inverted 5th wheel. We have these exclusive on our oilfield mini floats it's a rather remarkable idea and worth a review by you if you get the chance
looks great.. and actually very cool product. ive got a goose ball in my truck now and have put off buying an rv due to the cost of changing over to a 5th wheel.. now i can keep the ball and just change out the box... alot less hassle to add the 5th wheel to the truck and i can still use it to haul hay and other items.. like you said the key is bed space.. its gold...lol.. great vids always a fan
I been looking at your vids just as a goof but it looks like I'm going to have to move in our RV full time 😃
Thanks for doing this video. I’m learning about bout 5th wheel/goose box set ups. I had the same issues with the concept of using a 5th wheel unit. I just saw the new goos all video. I’m getting the new goose ball from that video.
Really cool upgrade. Just getting our Jayco Pinnacle which comes with the Moyrryde pinbox. Otherwise I would really be researching this to add to my setup.
I would love to know if this configuration works in a Ram with Ramboxes when using the extended ball you are talking about. My current 1500 has the rambox and I love them. I will be going to a 2500 next time with the plan to also upgrade from a travel trailer to a fifth wheel. I would love to not have to sacrifice the storage space to do it.
Great vids keep up the great work. Very interested in the new hitch..
Check out retailers rating on it. All the reviews with a 4.8 star average. Yeah enough said. Overkill for my trailer but hell worth it. Consider it done. I have the companion slider and two things drive me nuts. The weight and the space it takes up. Excellent hitch no doubt but with a back injury I have to use an engine hoist seeing it’s almost 300#. Thanks for the review. I’ll have to put this on my RV bucket list.
I love your content. Keep up the great work. Just curious to know if the high centre mount camera will still be of use now with the lower hitch connection?
Awesome video as always
I'm at a campground on Barksdale AFB, LA and the camp host has the Goose Box on his 5th wheel. First one I've ever seen. I moved away from the Goose adaptor and bought the Curt hitch that fit my 2016 Ram because much of I40, 20 and 10 are so bad I felt it was a danger to my rig.
This is a cool item. When I bought a 5er I really wanted a gooseneck alternative and purchased an Andersen, because I was concerned about frame stress. Good to know there is a product out there that addresses this niche.
I have a reese goose box. It rides so nice!
Can hardly wait to see how this works! I really didn't want to use up my bed space with a fifth wheel.
Thank you for clearing that up.
B&W makes gooseneck balls for factory prep hitches now. Extremely robust.
Looking forward to the towing video
Definitely what i am going with once i buy a trailer...
I purchased the Reese Goose Box based on your video. It arrived today and I put it on. I have a couple of observations based on my installation; although I haven't actually driven it with the Goose Box yet.
1) I don't like where the air inlet/outlet is. I can't reach it from any direction without getting into the bed of the truck. And, I have to duck in order to not hit my head on the coach. It would be better if it was on the back of the Goose Box so it could be easier to reach.
2) On my unit, when filled with air at 50 PSI, the load/air sticker never gets to the green. I added a little extra and the over flow blew telling me that was enough. With 50lbs, the sticker says add more air.
3) As I tried to un hitch my truck, I could not get the release cable to lock into the cradle. I finally figured out that I had to empty the air bags in the Goose Box in order to get the latch to release. So, that means that if I was at a campsite, once I empty the bags to remove the truck they would be empty upon re attaching the Goose Box. So, next week I am installing a Viair system in my F350 so I will always have on-board air. Not a bid deal but something to think about if one is looking to purchase this.
With that said, the construction is beautiful and I can't wait to see what the ride is like on our next trip.
Great observations! I experienced the same issue with the airbag. Reese told me that 50lbs is the max pressure, but you really need to pull your coach and see exactly what feels right to you. I settled at 30lbs for me. In regards to unhitching, I also experienced the same issue. I'll have to see if this is a consistent thing or is problematic over time. Finally, in regards to the valve location, I use the Viair extended arm which keeps me from getting in the bed.
Is this kind of setup compatible with short truck beds? I’ll have to look into this if it is
Thanks for the explanation..✌️🇺🇸👍
Great video and thank you for clarifying
Look in forward to review of the new goose ball. Was elevation needed in part to give more room over the tool box?
Great info. Thnx👍🤙
Thanks for the info, I travel for work an live fulltime in my fifth wheel, would a combination of airbags on my truck and this hitch be a pass or fail?
Another method of torquing would be is to reverse the bolt and have the nut on the outside.
Thanks again
Hi love the videos
Would I be correct in saying the extra piece of mind of the higher rated goosebox and the higher gooseneck rating helped in the decision to move to the new hitch arrangement?
I have a total hip replacement and went with the Anderson companion hitch because of the lighter weight. It tows great but you're right it does take up a lot of room in your truck bed. I'm really interested in how your goose hitch tows. It would be nice to have more room in the bed of our truck.
I was wondering what your thoughts on an open differential verses having a tru-track or an elocker and how this would change the characteristics of your truck.
Awesome informational educational video experience Y'alls
I wonder how well this goosebox would work with gen-y gooseneck ball on damping the load on rough terrain.
I have a STD bed F350 4x4 and suspect I would need an offset ball setup to insure no clearance issues with the cab of truck. Do you have a recommendation for an offset ball that would be comparable to the ball that you have ordered for your truck. I like the Curt ball kit for ease of connection with their lift pin.
I’m interested in installing a gooseneck ball on my F-250. What kit would you recommend? And do you like and recommend sulastics? Thanks!
Good morning we are new to your channel this year and really enjoyed your insights on all your reviews on the whole aspect of the RVing were going to retire last year then the whole World changed and put everything on hold we live in a resort town against Lake Huron up in Ontario and can get a good deal of money for our home and want travel to the warmer States during the winter months and become full time RVers, you reviewed the Jayco 36swws trailer we really loved the whole layout of it, in your opinion would you have any concerns about that trailer, i drove long haul most of my career so I wouldn't have any problems with it being 102 and 40ft long, hope to see your response thank you and keep up the great research on all the great things that you do
So what are you doing with the Anderson Ultimate since you wont be using it? For sale? Drawing for one lucky subscriber?
Do you know if anybody makes a 5th wheel that doesn't have slideouts? I have seen to many going down the road w/ slider sticking 1/2 way out because it broke. Really like this goose hitch, very informative video, thanks
Interesting to see this I would be interesting to see a video of you hooking it up with the gooseneck ball, I have the B&W Companion Slider and yes I will agree that it's an awesome hitch but heavy it is. I do take it out apart those which is not too bad but if I can get something like the gooseneck ball hitch I wouldn't have to worry about taken out my B&W hitch. I am a subscriber so when you do get it hook up I will be on it and thank you for another awesome video.
I had a goose ball adaptor on my camper And always noticed a bit a chucking after going over a rough patch. I switched and put a fifth wheel in the truck and the chucking seems to be a lot less noticeable. I am curious to see if you experience any difference going down the road with this system compared to the fifth wheel hitch. I would love to go back to just having a gooseball to take out of the truck every weekend instead of hossing the fifth wheel around.
It looked like to me when you removed the break away switch the wires from the trl were routed through the space between the pin box and frame mount. Now they are on the outside. Is the switch to large to fit through the opening now?
Any idea when you are going to post part 2 of Buying a new Heavy Duty Pickup truck! The search begins!
Still love my Anderson Hitch but.............. Damn you’ve about sold me on the goose box.
Pullrite Superlite #2600 Single Point Attachment is much better than the Andersen I think.....check it out!
Makes sense!!
I like it!
When do we get a tow video? Excited to see what you think. Been waiting a month!
I thought the reason you went back from the goose connection last time, was you did not want to over work the loading jacks. (About 4" I think you said) With the reese do you need to raise and lower the gear as much as the previous goose system?
Is there any difference in sway, articulation, or wind buffering issues between the two?
I wonder if this would work in a RAM with the RAM Boxes in the bed (i.e. would the RAM Boxes make the bed to narrow for the Goosebox to swing left and right in)?
Will the goosebox give you enough clearance on a short bed truck, or am I stuck with a sliding hitch?
Will this work well on a short bed? (regarding cab to nose cap clearance)
The key word being an adaptor I am new to the truck thing towing 5th wheel/gooseneck connection
Good video thanks for the info, one point of interest though, can you show us your face or are you going to be the Wilson from home improvement of you tube?
Can you use the goose box on a flatbed where the ball is under the floor of the bed? My only concern is if there’s enough clearance for that goose box to move around in that square hole?!
Does Limpert have a waiver or provide something saying they will keep your warranty intact if you install a Reese Goosebox?
Does the Reese Goose box allow for more turning radius when using/ pulling w/a 6 1/2’ box vs buying a truck w/8’ box?
I own a Jayco 355mbqs and was considering changing from a companion slider hitch to this goose box system. I called Jayco’s customer service line and they said “we wouldn’t recommend using the Reese goose box system”. Dose Coachman’s warranty allow the use of this system ?
If you get a chance I would like to see some comparisons between 2018 and 2019 1 tons of any or all brands.. I have seen s lot of 1/2 ton comparisons not many 1 ton dually comparisons. Or did I miss it?
Great vid. Ever thought about making a used RV guide?Maybe buying used, or "how has xyz held up over 10 years?" etc.
I'm with you chadly 1337, I would love to see BTBRV review and rate older RV's and show us which Brands perform and hold-up better, as well as those that have underperformed, through the years. Love your channel BTBRV!
Why not flip the bolts so the nuts are on the outside of the box? You can probably get a wrench on the bolt heads inside the box while you torque from the outside. That's what I did when I replaced my old hardware. My thinking is, if the nuts are visible from the outside, I'll notice any loosening more easily.
What is your ground height on your truck. In turn from the top rail to the ground? I have a doge ram 3500 4x4 long bed but my toy haul rides low in the back and only 4”” on bed clearness . So dose not ride leaves? Trying to find a pin box that will work for me. My toy hauler is a raptor mp300 2015. Let know if you can thks
Using the goose box set up
Would it be legal to pull a small boat behind the RV
The other method you could have used for torquing the bolts would to have used a 6" crows foot wrench and the conversion table for torque.
IMO, when you look at the torque requirements for a 5/8-11 grade 8 bolt, plated bolts only require 159 ft.lbs of torque. Non-plated bolts get 212 ft.lbs torque. The bolts supplied by Reese appear to be cadmium plated, so a lower torque number could be safely applied.
Having said that, if Reese recommends 225 ft.lbs of torque, that's what I would apply.
OK, you have impressed us all with your knowledge, but it doesn't really add to the discussion. Please help us stay on topic.
Gunga Dinn I think the extra torque recommendation, Reese is taking into account most will torque the head of the bolt. Not everyone is a “Trained Professional Mechanic.”
Interesting.
How long is that bed? How close does the trailer get to the cab?
Do you see a problem using this set up in a gmc 3/4 ton with a 6ft 6in bed?
I have one of these for my Lifted truck with a flat bed, the 5th wheel was just not sitting right anymore.
It all comes down to the distance between the pivot point and the node of concern on the frame.
Nice.
You can reverse the bolts your talking about with nuts on outside .. thats way before you ever go on trip or during trip you can do a torque test when ever you like or think it needs to be done
With this set up is it still legal to triple tow
Wish you’d do a animation video of the stresses, hard for me to picture.
How does this Reese compare to Andersen as far as performance and tow security
Will this work on a short bed 18f250???? I can’t find anything online!
I wonder if Reese is going to replace your trailer or repair the frame after yours starts to fail?
Wish they made these for my pin box
Can you get a 90° turn with 2014 F250 crew cab shortbed?
Thanks for sharing, ive got one question to ask is the distance from the ball connection the same or greater from the pin box.I didnt know if the rear bumper is closer to the fifth wheel. If its the same im going to change mine out for that and get ride of my B&W companion slider hitch. It looks like E trailer has the best price on them.
The distance is the same, maybe a hair closer to the truck because I had my B&W set to the back slightly (the upright arms).
Installed this same goose box 2 season ago and it has been great but was a learning curve to get it riding just right, it comes with stickers showing the green zone for the amount of air pressure needed to inflate the internal bag. after a long time with tech support and many test drives tech support stated the stickers are just a guide and very inaccurate and a pressure gauge should be used to determine the exact inflation since 5psi + or - makes a huge difference in ride performance. For my setup 30 psi turned out to be the sweet spot and it pulls great and cushions perfectly. Great videos! hope this helps getting yours dialed in since it doesn't state this it the manual
Thanks for the feedback!
Hey if you need to rehome the old gooseneck ball I'd gladly take care of it for you.
Omigosh! Thank u! I was wondering whether to rig up with goose or 5th and if there was adaptation available.
Yeah!! Adios spacey fifth wheel hitch. Now let’s haul some pallets of stuff.🇺🇸
I don't think I've ever heard you say what you do for work. Iove your videos though!
I curious where you got your extended 2 5/16 ball? And....did it give you additional height between the underside of the trailer and the pickup's bed rail? I've noticed the ball for a Ford pickup seems to be about an inch taller than the same ball for a Chevrolet or Dodge factory installed "puck" system.
The ball is in the description
Why did the manufacturer installed them from the get go?
I hear & understand what your are saying but if the trucking industry has never used gooseneck type hitch connections I don’t feel it is in my best interests. In case of any accident the traditional 5th wheel pin hitch is much more secure in any swerving maneuvers IMHO. Feel free to do it your way but on this topic I think the goose neck can’t hold a candle to a traditional setup.
