I have towed a 42' 4 horse/living quarter horse trailer and 24'x8 flat deck with tractor using a gooseneck hitch, probably well over 50k towing miles with those trailers. They are so easy to work with and great maneuverability with turning and backing. I have never used a fifthwheel pin box but saw your vid on the goosebox change-out after my wife started talking about wanting a fifthwheel camper. If we get a camper, the goosebox will be installed immediately.

I have an update, talked with Reese this week and found out that they're making a design change. The pressure control valve is changing and you'll be adjusting the pressure where you like it for your application. I made a suggestion that the install a small pressure gauge on the unit. I guess they've been having problems with it maintaining pressure while traveling.

I have a friend who has a fifth wheel. He pulls his Fifth wheel hitch when not towing and stores it in his garage. He complains that, when they are camping, he doesn't have the room for groceries and such in his bed so I told him about what you had done and suggested he watch your video. He loved the idea! I'm glad too because I'm the one who had to help him. LOL

I just did my first pull with my goose box, OMFG!!!!!! what an amazing hitch! totally removed all the jouncing and bumps. At times its was as if i didn't even have the trailer on. I am running air bags on the truck also, so i think it was a combination of both working together. I just cant say enough for it tho. so so glad i put this on!

Great video with drone & truck bed views! Never disappointed with your content. I don’t have a 5th wheel or duelly truck, I have a 2017 Grand Design travel trailer & a 2005 Ford F-350 SWD truck but always enjoy learning about what is out there for upgrades & mods. I have really liked mine also, I did get a 5 inch offset ball, that gave me more room from the cab, and more important more room between the trailer and tailgate when hitching. Love the empty bed also, and not have the 5th.wheel hitch to pack in and out. Also the both the shocks and the airbag make for a smooth and quiet ride. I'm glad you changed you perspective on the goosebox. Change is hard until tried and tested for me also.

I have a 2010 Ram 2500 with a B&W turnover ball setup and I love it. I also put a Reese goosebox on my fifth wheel. My is only a 16k unit but my camper is only about 10k. Yeah its 5 more minutes to hook up and you do have to be much more precise with lining the ball up, but the bed space you gain is worth every minute. I also have a large gooseneck flatbed trailer and I didn't want to be yanking a fifth wheel in and out of the bed all the time. Not to mention its a big beast to store. I do need to get the taller ball for some more bed clearance. There is a lot more movement with a ball and the bed does touch from time to time. Glad you like your setup. Mine works great and with no problems.

Thanks for the vid. Picked up our first 5th Wheel on Friday (2019 Sabre 31BHT) and had opted for the Goosebox a couple of days before your video on the install so it mostly confirmed I made the right choice. 😀 I did pick up the BW ball set up after that video too though. So far no clearance issues on my short bed F350. I may or may not have forgotten to put air in the Goosebox on the first trip this weekend though. 😝

To me it makes complete sense to free up the bed of the truck. Thanks for filming the entire hookup. It really helped me understand the setup. I would love to see a video of towing a camper and a boat at the same time. Small camper and small boat, but what are the requirements and what to watch out for when towing a double. Thanks again.

Thanks for the review on the Goosebox. I have 2019 f350 and i was considering the anderson set up because i need my truck bed. and generally its just me unloading the trailers after camping, soo the 150lbs fifth wheel set up was out of the question. Yes, it does take a little bit more time to line up the ball, but i love being able to adjust that air bag for different situations. we live in utah and drove to san diego. the roads here and in nevada are far smoother than california and with an air adjustment, it helped greatly to make the ride smoother. I have 2009 raptor 380LEV toy hauler. also for security, you can put a lock on the hitch.

Great mod on that gooseneck hitch. Often wondered why all the RVs use fifth wheels while the heavy commercial trailers and horse trailers have used goosenecks for years. Much more convenient. You have probably just started the next big thing in the RV industry. I'll be watching for updates. Keep up the great vids. Enjoy your opinions.

On my first fifth wheel, I converted from a king pin to a gooseneck hitch but did NOT do so on my second fifth wheel and I am using a B&W Companion. I regret not converting since the Companion takes up so much space. Don't get me wrong, B&W makes a great product, I just miss turning the B&W ball over and having space in the back like a pickup normally has. Yes, you can take Companion out when not towing, or put in back in when you are towing, but it is not worth the hassle when you get to or are leaving from your destination. Great video and awesome truck!

Nice demo of the gooseneck. You have a good point about hitch removal as I almost broke my back putting mine away. To your point about level towing. It just happens that my hitch height is just about right. If I park on level ground I can slide out from under the trailer and be less than 2 degrees from level. I rarely need to adjust my pinbox height to couple back up. Despite weight and space. I favor the pinbox. No cameras needed. I can look out the rear window..

Always better to spend more time Checking things when hooking up, than explaining why something went wrong. Tire steps are ok, I just carry an aluminum step ladder. It allows me to use it in more places and it is very light. Camera in the bed really looks like the best addition. The upgraded hitch really does look like it smooths the ride. Safety cable hook up point is exactly why I need a third safety chain hookup point.

I had a popup rv4 pin to gooseneck adapter. And I switched out to a B and W companion hitch. The having to run the Jack's more and it had some vibrations on rough roads. Real happy with the companion hitch. Ijest use the loader on a tractor to get it out of the truck.

Thanks for this update, I currently pull a 30’ travel trailer but if I move up to a fifth wheel this would be the way I go as well. I use the bed of my truck constantly and having to install and remove the fifth wheel hitch all of the time is one of the main reasons I’ve stuck with a travel trailer. Great video, thanks

This is one of the first videos I've seen where the safety break-away is correctly attached to the tow vehicle. Every other video I've watched, the break-away was attached to some part of the hitch. With the gooseneck setup, I guess you really don't have a choice but to attach to the TV.

I like that idea. I had an adaptor on my 5th wheel when I first got it but then there were occasions where a friend with a 5th wheel and no truck needed his rigoved. Transferring that adaptor is a pain. Curt built the prep kit for Ram so I looked at their hitch sold at the dealership and it was near $1400. Found the Curt Q25 (25,000 pound capacity) on Amazon with free shipping for $731. Cha-ching!

Very cool, JD. Nice drone shots. I see you touched up the old washer / bolt witness marks on the sides of the pin-box housing. I really love the space savings in the bed. I surely thought the weight distribution in the bed at one point would be unstable laterally, but I guess not. My Reese Titan 20K 5th wheel hitch weighs well over 100 pounds and I need to schedule any R&R with a friend. I've been looking to install a gantry with block and tackle inside my machine shop to ease removal and installation of my 5th wheel hitch when I back in. This Goose would save a lot of $$$ and be much easier. Good job!

I would like a video on how to backup a 5th wheel into your parking spot, but having to make a 90 degree turn into the parking spot. Please include how much room you need to have away from the other trailers when you start your turn, how much room in front of your truck and how far to jack the 5th before following through. Please include all the tricks you know on how and what to watch for.

    Good evening
I have been following your channel for about 2 months now and have enjoyed all your videos. I subscribed right away. I am the proud owner of a 2013 F-250 Super Duty and a 2010 26' North Trail 5th wheel. Today I installed a Dee Zee tailgate assist and drilled the 1/2 hole as per your remedy to the stock hole that is too sloppy. I also just ordered the tire step. You do a great job explaining why you recommend the products that you use, but you're costing me money 😜. I live up in Calgary Alberta and have never been to Texas, yet. With retirement coming soon, the misses and I have been talking about touring your neck of the woods. How about some reviews of the campgrounds and points of interest that you have been to. Keep up the great work and keep the videos coming.
    Kind Regards

This video has confirmed that the Andersen is the way to go. It has all your objectives covered and is easier to use. Never understood why you had a space problem with the Andersen. It can be removed quickly at 35 pounds and reduces total weight as well. So much easier to hook up when you can see the ball.

this seems like the way to go.. an anderson hitch is like 750 and the companion is even more.. this way you get a dampened ride and when it's off.. it's off... no hitch to store etc. pretty sweet.

I have the companion hitch now and thinking about switching as I would love to have the bed space freed up when my camper is disconnected. I think my only concern is how much space do you have between the connection to the goose ball and the tailgate. with the kingpin setup i can use space between the companion and tailgate to store cooler and a grill basically as long as its not higher than the bed rails or would interfer with the kingpin box that space is free to use. With the goose box how much of that do you loose? If you did have space then i guess the concern would be stuff sliding forward and interfering with the goose box.

I like the Anderson hitch better, less stress on the trailer, you can adjust the trailer distance and height without having to buy something else. If you have more than one trailer, it's easy to remove and install. And the price is much less. But a good option here!

You are gonna need to redo your video... I just bought this exact same hitch this past monday. After watching this video I was a little bummed about the thought of having to air up and air down the bag everytime you hook up. I was actually thinking I was going to return the hitch... not worth the hassle.
I installed my hitch on Monday, but had not got a chance to hook up yet due to the rain. Yesterday I hooked up. I 1st added 45lbs of air to the bag. I hooked up and took a test drive. I can say it is SO smooth. I loved my Andersen hitch, but this is hard to beat being its just so smooth. When I unhitched I wasn't required to let any air out... unhooked just fine.
Details on my setup... 2018 Ram 3500 Long Bed dually, 2018 Phoenix 360bh by Shasta (exact same as your 5th wheel... Coachman makes the Chaparral and Phoenix in the same plant).
You need to give it another shot... something wasn't set up right on your first go. I enjoy your videos and know you don't want misleading info out there!

Big Truck Big RV I just used a few pumps of the grease I use on my Kubota tractor. Not sure the grease was the difference.

You should do a comparison video against all the trucks / cars you have ever owned and you choose which one is the best of them all!

Hey big fan of your channel thanks for a lot of good work. But wasn’t there a video you put out a year or so ago that says not to change a fifth wheel trailer hitch ,to a gooseneck adapter because of the stress it puts on the chassis

Love the video. I like the content. I'll be driving thru Mid to late June. It's fun to see parts of TX I now. We take 35 to corpus, then down the mid hwy in CC down to Chapman Ranch road. Some of you video roads, I totally know by heart.

Very good Video. I have a 20k on our 2015 Keystone Fuzion 404 42' Toy Hauler and it pulls "GREAT"! I don't have safety chains on ours but if I had them I on any trailer bumper or goose neck I cross the safety chains. Reason for that in My mind it will maybe catch the hitch and cause less damage wile trying to stop maybe!?🤠

1 Thing i noticed in this besides all the extra goodies for towing which I am stealing some of your ideas for my truck like the bed camera which is a smart and amazing idea, I noticed that you are using all grade 8 hardware but the hardware that attached the safety chains to the goose box were those grade eight as well? They didn't look it which now makes those the weak link in the system but overall great videos and work. Love the channel!!

Check with your DMV in some states it is not legal to tow a camp trailer with a gooseneck.
    From outdoorfact.com
    Applications
Gooseneck, It is suitable for hauling trailers that carry only goods, not human beings.
5th wheel, It is used for dragging RVs that carry people. In fact, many states allow only fifth wheel hitches for trailers carrying passengers.

With my Companion, I just back off the hold down bolt and lift the entire hitch out of the truck while it’s still attached to the trailer. Clean bed in just a few minutes without any heavy lifting.

I wonder if you could do a video about going over rough terrain and the truck bed angles and how much you can actually angled vehicle without hitting the fifth wheel with the truck bed that's the best way I can explain it

Also, when the new Ram heavy duty trucks arrive, will you still get a Ram 3500 if they don't make 4500 bed configuration? (If your next truck is going to be a Ram)

Great new hitch. I am wanting to get something to a lot lighter as my hitch. Sick and tired of not being able to use my bed and the heavy conventional 5th wheel hitch.

I got one of these when I got the new Ram with the factory prep as I would need a new hitch anyway. I have only had it hitched twice to try the mounting height and to move it so I could work on the pad it sits on. In both cases I had no trouble unhitching without dumping the bag. I have not towed with it yet due to other reasons. My second comment is that there is a fellow over on another site I visit the claims to be a mechanical engineer and is dead set against this hitch claiming it will damage 5th wheels structure from the added stress. To my knowledge he has not done a study nor can provide a study to prove his point against the manufacture, Reese or Lippert.

As mentioned in the video where you installed this goose box, it weighs about 100 lbs more than the Fiver pin box you had on it. But you didn't mention that the tow vehicle is what's going to be carrying the additional weight. It's probably a mute point for any dually tow vehicles but it does add to the payload/tongue weight. And overall GVW. Just something to be mindfull of if your allready towing near you maximum ratings.

      @BigTruckBigRV  5 лет назад +3

Keep in mind that you are removing over 200lbs worth of a traditional Fifth Wheel hitch from the bed and replacing it with a 10lb Gooseball. So, if the factory pinbox weighs in around 75lbs, and the Goosebox is 100lbs heavier, when you subtract the 200+ lb fifth wheel hitch, your actually lighter overall by over 100lbs.

Next accessory for the truck and trailer… leather work gloves that are stored beside the seat belt reel in the truck. Same for gloves stored in the trailer mechanical box.

I wish I would have known about this system before I got the Companion system; I would have gotten this one. The main reason I purchased a trailer rv vs a bus was because I wanted to use my truck as a "truck" when not towing the trailer. It seems like it would be easy to sell the Companion hitch, but not sure how easy it would be to sell the TrailAir pinbox. Ho Hum...
