Bought my first fifthwheel last month and I put a goosebox on it before I even brought it home based on watching your videos. So far I like it I have only pulled it like ten miles since I live in Wisconsin. Best part is my parking spot in my driveway requires my truck to be at about a 45 degree angle with the front of the truck being about 1.5 feet lower than the rear of the truck. I am able to hook and un hook in ways I don't think a fifthwheel could even be hooked and un hooked.
Very good video. I've owned 3 different fifth wheel hitches, Reece, Curt, and B&W Companion. The B&W Companion is by far the easiest to use. The Reece and Curt were difficult to hitch up a fifth wheel in uneven terrain. The B&W seem to tolerate uneven terrain better than the other two I've owned.
I moved up to a Fifth Wheel a few weeks ago. I chose the Curt Crosswing. Since getting the trailer on June 16th we've traveled just short of 4k miles. It's easy to connect. Confident connection and I feel secure towing. We have a 36' Flagstaff Super Lite, so it's not any where near it's capacity.
We love our Anderson hitch with our 2018 GD Reflection 28bh. It’s quiet, light weight and easy to hook up.

Switched from a travel trailer to a 5th wheel last fall. Originally I wanted the companion hitch, but the dealer I was buying my 5th wheel from talked me into the goose box. I am SO GLAD THEY DID. I LOVE my goose box.
Due to me running a short bed truck and coming with a gooseneck set up for my cattle trailer. I've ran the Andersen for 4 years now and love it, that being said, when I upgrade to a bigger trailer I'm not sure what I'll do for the next hitch.
That newer frame your were talking about is equipped with the rhino pin box, the front beam is a 6x6 steel tube vs a 6x2 on all the other frames. Also extra bracing throughout the frame. At least that's what I was told. I ended up going with the gen y, mainly because goosebox doesnt work with the rhino pin box. Have heard they are making one to fit it though sometime this summer. Gen y is also going through the approval process with lippert but not approved as of right now. That's all I know 😀
I really like the goose box. I've seen the GenY gooseneck hitch but haven't seen any reviews as yet. Thanks for the review and information JD.
I purchased an GenY goose neck hitch on a 2021 Highland Ridge, Mesa Ridge with 15,500 GVWR and let me tell you, Wow! The ride is much smoother and stuff in the camper doesn’t seem to spill all over that much anymore. I used to have a B&W Companion but had to change setup when I upgraded to the 21 GMC 3500HD.
I like the curt because of the way it wraps around the pin. Just gives me more confidence that it won’t slip out. Of course I know none of them will but the looks of the curt gives me a little more peace of mind.
I had a 1st gen and now have a 20k 2nd gen. I love it
Great video. Interesting that you will likely go back to the Goosebox. We have Andersen and love it, but I would love to switch to the Goosebox and not deal with hitch at all.

Yesterday I watched at least 50 folks leave the campground. I bet at least 75% had too small of a truck. This included TT and 5ers. It is scary what people do. Really like this video. Outstanding.
Love the Gen 2 goosebox on a Momentum 353G. Suggestions for improvements in convenience. Have holes on the side for chain stowage. Extend release cable further back for easier reach from tailgate. Keep the airbag.
Nice video. I have my Gen-Y hitch sitting in the bed of my truck waiting for our new 5th wheel to come in. I like the fact of having the bed relatively open plus getting a bit older and not as easy to lift out a big hitch assembly out of my bed. Was hoping to see you do a review on the Gen- Y before I got it but I went ahead with it- I think it will work great, not a fan of the airbag on the Goosebox. Keep the video coming.

Plus advantage of Goosebox, no tug test required on a Goosebox/ball vs 5th wheel king pin, it gave me nearly 3” more clearance.
I love this particular air ride goose neck over the Gyn-Y because of the “air ride” aspect which the “Gyn-Y” does not have. We’ve had great success and comfort with the “Reese Goose Box.” Highly recommended.
Glad to hear you like this goose box. I'm getting a flat bed installed with a gooseneck already in it. I like the fact there's no adapters this way. Plus getting full articulation at a lower price is nice too. The Reese is what I was planning to go with and I do believe you've secured my decision. Thanks for the review!
Thanks for video. I bought a Gen Y 5th wheel to gooseneck conversion with auto latch. Gen Y going through the testing with Lippert (Mr. Truck video with owner) Lots of RV forums where people are using them. I pick up our new fifth wheel in a couple weeks....can't wait to install.
I run the 2nd gen 20k goosebox on my 2018 momentum 395M. Put about 55psi in the bag and have towed for about a year with it and have had no issues. I did have some reservations about the pin weight but have been very pleased with it so far
Just ordered the Gen-Y torsion gooseneck box for my fifth wheel.
I'd be very interested in your review of a Gen-Y gooseneck 5th wheel hitch. Prior to this video I'd never heard of it. Based on your previous reviews I've been leaning towards the Reese goose box.
I have the Gen-y executive and the biggest reason I did is there are no air bags, air lines, or air valves to go bad, freeze, or crack. I don't know if those torsion points will last a life time but it surely has to last longer due to less components right?

I haven’t had it very long but I do like it a lot more than a standard pin box.
Let’s get all of these changes on the version 3 of the goose box
We are using a BlueOx hitch attached to our gooseneck ball. It has a large footprint but the way it is designed it is easily removed and camping gear can be packed all around it with no interference. But most importantly there is little to no chucking in the truck and the 5th wheel. We pack gear in the camper even on the counters and it is still in place when we arrive. We have over 65,000 miles on this hitch with no issues.
I totally agree, I’ve been using mine for a couple of years now too. It’s a great hitch that nobody seems to look at it.
also goose box is amazing in support! i had a slight sway/twist issue that was from the suspension not quite aligned and they still gave me a new one to replace the one that twisted slightly. it was a very slight twist too. probably would have been fine. awesome company!!!!!!!
Love my 2nd gen Goosebox. Will never use anything else. My 2003 8’ long bed Dodge Ram is a perfect fit to this hitch.

I would love to see you do a review of the turning point pin box. It's very unique where you can move the pivot point from the pin to where the box attaches to the fifth wheel.

Just tried the 2nd Gen 20k Reese on my Momentum 397TH with the B&W Ford Puck kit on my 2021 F450. Fit perfectly, I could get a full 90 in the parking lot if needed. The F250 I had briefly with it would hit the bed rail and or cab of the truck. I've also read, that Lippert frame warranty was fine with the Reese goose box...hopefully that's true.
I want the Reese on mine, but having a trailer with a 20klb GVWR, I want to wait until they have one rated at 25k or higher. Like my truck, I want the Reese to be capable of more than what I have.
Just watched this, and then your install video from way back, and now I can't see why anyone wouldn't want this Goose Box vs the traditional 5th wheel hitch. Seems like a no brainer.
I have a heavy Luxe Toy Hauler 48FB. Pin is 6040 and total trailer weight is 26600. I still have and have used the B&W puck mount, Andersen and Gen-Y goose. I can tell you the Gen-Y is the best of the three and rated the highest weight wise. Liked both the Andersen and B&W too but they aren’t up to the task with the Luxe.
Regarding Lippert not approving the Gen-Y...look at the mechanical drawings for the MorRyde cushion pin box (which Lippert approves) and compare that to the Gen-Y. Bottom line is the Gen-Y puts less stress on the frame. There is no air bag to leak like the Reese (which I’ve never used). I believe, and several folks with inside knowledge have confirmed to me, the Lippert/Gen-Y approval is more about $$ than engineering.
Understand your comment about not wanting to take a chance and I didn’t either but the facts are apparent if you have limited knowledge of physics after you compare the drawings. Bottom line I don’t think Lippert would fail to honor a warranty claim by me and definitely not by you with your reach and influence in the RUclips world.
I spent a lot of money on the Luxe and I put the best pin box on there for the unit based on facts and not some approval rating that might not be rooted in engineering facts.
Anyway like lots of other folks on here I’d like to see you review the Gen-Y goose on your new RV. Your comments about the air bag and overhanging mass are both resolved by the Gen-Y. If you call Jason at Gen-Y I’m pretty sure he would donate one for you to try. Those guys are top notch customer service and some of the friendliest people I’ve met.

The only thing keeping me from switching to a goosebox is that I can’t find any comparison info, on the stability in high winds, between that and a conventional 5th wheel pin box. I travel for a living and sometimes am forced to travel in less than ideal wind conditions. Would love to see you discuss that.

In the AGRICULTURAL sector in EUROPE,
and now spredding fast across the planet,
are two ball diametres (of a set of four sizes)
that have become the de-facto-standards
for primary tow hitch
(two additional balls are often used to provide mechanical steering-linkage connections
to steered trailer-axles).
For the Primary Tow-Coupling the two Towing-Ball Diametres to have caught on
are 80 mm (3" & 5/32) known as K80
and 110 mm (4" & 21/64).known as k110
As an example of capacity the K80 combinations are (as far as I can see)
available in ratings of up to
34Tonne (almost 75 thousand pounds) TOWED (horizontal) , & 4T VERT .
The ratings of other two larger sized would be proportionally bigger, I suspect.
In contrast to car ball heads, there is no locking below the coupling
(fatter stud),
an alternative system being used to clamp the spoon into contact with the ball.
(this allows for a thicker, more robust SHANK to connect the ball-head).
A little less common (so far) is the K150 (150mm = almost 6" dia.)
this is only used on VERY HEAVY combinations.
Often one, or, a pair of 50 mm (almost 2") K-50 supplemental balls
mounted one on each side of the primary-towing-ball,
connect steering linkages, that can steer the trailer axles,
in proportion to the degree of articulation relative to the towing vehicle.
" .... A K50 ball (or pair of K50 balls) on the side of the K80
makes it possible to couple forced steering devices
with no play and in a stable manner. ....."
These are usually referred to as "Ball & Spoon" couplings.

Sadly, USA, standardizes, whatever is DIFFERENT to the rest of the world
(despite being only 4% of the human population).
While these started out as "European" & "Agricultural"
they are increasingly becoming the popular format internationally in transport.
Is the Goosebox smoother than Companion? If smoothness were the ONLY concern (ie. no care about cost, weight, bed availability, etc.) which would you go with?

I have been using the Trailersaver BD-5 Hitch. Try that out for awhile. I don't think you will ever go back to anything else.

I’m worried about the pin box frame. Ours was cracked as well as a Montana. Both had standard fifth wheel hook ups.
Why don’t trailer manufacturers just use a gooseneck style frame?

As a noob, it would have been helpful to show a quick picture of what hitch type you are talking about, all hooked up for reference, because I have absolutely no idea what you said based on names and what these arms look like. I’ll figure it out but for us laymen, a pic really helps when this is all so foreign.
I personally have no use for a goose box or any gooseneck hitch. I love my 5th wheel hitch and convert my GN trailers to king pins. The minor loss of bedspace is a non issue for me and the MUCH faster and easier hookup and disconnect of the 5th wheel far outweighs any GN benefits FOR ME.
Will there be a day when you review a Gen-Y Executive Goose? There's a gen 2 with auto latch now.
They actually started with the auto latch and moved to the pin and then back to the auto latch

I have the Gen-Y with the auto latch. It is easy to connect the RV, but it is difficult to detach the RV because I have to pull the release cable while simultaneously lifting the RV. My wife has to operate the jacks while I pull the release cable.
I got my Gen Y with the auto latch last year. Easy peezy!
One of the hitch companies let you turn the ball upside down and put it back in the hole to store it.
Hello, I love watching your videos. Thank you for all the content. I do have a question about the Goose Box, Does it void the factory warranty of most manufacturers? I am asking because when i was looking to get into going into 5th wheel the sales person at Camping world in Nashville told me that I can not go with a Goose Box because no warranty or insurance will cover it.
So is it in the plans to listen to you and will Reese change the design a bit? I just ordered a goose box I can return it if improvements are going to be made.
Would the Reese Goose box work well in a short bed truck?
JD, would you recommend a goosebox for a short bed Superduty? I have to use a B&W companion slider now, to give me the clearance when backing, and I'd LOVE to have a goosebox so long as I didn;t loose any cab clearance for manuevering.
It's truck and trailer dependant. Different combos will have different clearances.
Could not help but notice that bedroom slide does not seem to be in and secure for travel... is it out of adjustment??

Isn’t it true that the Gen Y and the Reese goosebox are typically best in an 8’ box? Would like to pull the trigger on either but am afraid of loosing that 6” between truck and camper besides the potential of hitting cab in an awkward position. Would like to see a fix for us standard box pickup owners.

it has to take more time than a hitching to a B&W companion right? So a 5th wheel hitch still might be better if you are hitching up a lot?
It really comes down to how accurat you are a backing under a Gooseball. You would also have chains to connect, but overall the time difference is marginal at best.
Are the gooseneck hitches as smooth of a ride as the companion hitch?
I’ve been looking at the Andersen myself but my local dealer suggested I also look at the Pulrite SuperLite. Has anyone used the Pullrite and what was your experience? I’m getting fat and old and frankly yanking my B&W out to use my bed is no longer something I want to do.
We have been using the anderson and it has been great. 18k toy hauler no clunking or chucking. Only downside is you need to watch your cab if you have a short bed in tight turning situations.
I’ve got the pullrite superlite and it is amazing! Super easy to hook up and unhook and also super easy to put in and take out of the bed
Thank you Titan, I was really looking at the Andersen, A Lot, but I had one thing holding me back and that's the safety chain requirement in the State of Texas for that setup. Not that having safety chains is a particularly difficult issue, it's just an additional cost and items I have to keep track of. Still, I liked the Andersen, but my question was around the Pullrite. Thanks for the reply Austin Loomis. That's exactly what I wanted to hear. The two hitches are roughly the same price, but just tweeked a little. The Pullrite doesn't require safety chains which is a huge plus. It's a tad heavier then the Andersen but WAYYYY lighter than my B&W. Thanks again to both of you, I appreciate the feedback.

Hello thinking about this hitch for my new Chevy 2500 6.5’ bed. What’s your thoughts using it with a shorter bed? Also interested in the Pullrite 2600 or Andersen.

Is the GENY Tortion Flex approved by Lippert? I have been eyeballing that pinbox for awhile now. I love the Reese but not the whole airbag setup.
We have a Trail Air hitch on our fifth wheel, it's an open range 38 and half feet. We been pulling our trailer with it for 8 years and haven't had any issues but we are planning to buy a new 5th wheel within a year and I'm wondering if you just take what you get when you buy a 5th wheel or can you request a different hitch system?
Depending on the dealer. You can typically pay for an upgrade that they should install

It seems that if Reese moved that attachment point forward, that the stress would be multiplied by quite a lot.
It would depend on the design. If they removed material from the front it wouldn't change

@@BigTruckBigRV today I bought an Alliance Valor. Found out it has a Rhino box. Had to leave it at the dealer when my goose box wouldn't fit. The bolt pattern is off by 3/8". I also heard today that Reese is coming out with a GooseBox in Q4 to fit the bolt pattern of Alliance's Rhino Box. Do you have any connections at Reese that I can use to verify this?

I've heard that haven't been able to find it multiple calls to lippert and reese both tell me I need to have something fabricated and according to forestriver and lippert welding on the frame voids my warranty which defeats the purpose of buying a new trailer if would have done more research on what a reese revolution pin box was I wouldn't have bought my coach the bw companion slider I have is just way to big and cumbersome
You mentioned the Gen-Y take on the goosebox, are you aware of their status when it comes to frame manufacture's approval? Gen-Y seems to have gone all in, in virtually all segments with their torsion-flex system and I've not heard many negatives.
It's currently not approved by LCI.
How do you determine what size (weight) do you need in a 5th wheel hitch?

Do you need to dump air from the goosebox air bags at disconnect then refil at connect before towing? If yes, then that would be a ginormous pain especially for a short stay. I seem to recall discussion about that from a previous video.
When I took a weekend trip I did not let air out of the bag. But when I parked It for a few months I did let some out and refilled it next time I hooked up. Only towed my camper 3 times with the goose box and absolutely love it.
No. On my Gen 1 I did, but not on the Gen2

Several are good. Ft Knox Locks and Proven Industries are great

I absolutely live my Gen-Y executive 5th wheel gooseneck. The ride is very smooth, and quiet. It is easy to attach the RV. My only complaint is that it is difficult for me to pull the cable to release the latch while simultaneously lifting the RV off the ball. It is really a 2-person job to detach the Gen-Y.
Anyone know what make/model of hitch lock that is (it's yellow) attached to the Reese Goose Box in this video?

I recall a one of your videos at a convention and you spoke with a representative form blue ox regarding the Blue Ox BXr6200 hitch. By the design it seems like you would have both easy installation and the durability of a traditional fifth wheel hitch. But for some reason it's so damn hard to find info on this hitch. Do you or anyone else have experience or knowledge with the blue ox?
I have been using the blue Ox for a couple of years now. I really enjoy the ride, dampens any shocks from the fifth wheel to the truck.
Rocking the hitch back to gain turning radius for the short bed is very simple and sturdy, also removing it in three easy pieces makes it nice.
I would recommend the blue Ox to anyone that is going to stay with a traditional pin box.
